What is Modern Industrialization?

1 part

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod where the ultimate goal is total automation. The pack includes version 2.5.6. The mod is inspired by GregTech but skips the pile of crafting tools, and it gives you a quarry early on so you can stop mining by hand if you automate it.[1][2]

Progression has two parts. In the Steam Age you build your first factories to make the resources for the second part, and the challenge is resource management and processing time. Most of those setups become obsolete afterwards, so don't over-invest. In the Electric Age you automate every processing line, and those setups are meant to be permanent because you can keep upgrading them.[3]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages running it alongside an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. It says that makes your progress extremely slow and inefficient.[3]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book has a chapter called "Modern Industrialization" in the "Tech Mods" group. It is chapter 28 of 31 and holds 68 quests. The quest text for 44 of them is not shown in the sources here, so for those you will need to open the quest book.[4]

An early quest is "The Start of Modern Industrialization" quest, where you craft a Forge Hammer. "Forge Ahead" quest follows it. From there "Powering Up" quest and "A Superior Tool" quest both unlock, and the latter is the Steam Mining Drill.[4]

Tip: In this pack the power systems are unified, so you can use and produce either FE or MI energy. For example, Mekanism generators can power MI machines and the other way around.[4]

The steam branch runs through "Bronze Boiler" quest. After it come "Coke Oven" quest, "Bronze Mixer" quest, "Crushing & Smelting" quest and "Bronze Compressor" quest. "Bronze Cutting Machine" quest follows the mixer.[4]

"The Gears of Industry" quest comes after the Steam Blast Furnace quest, one untitled quest and the Bronze Boiler. It leads to "Your First Quarry!" quest, "Steel Upgrade" quest and "Steel Wiremill" quest.[4]

The electric branch continues with "Rubber Sheet" quest, then "We Cannot Resist This" quest and "MI Cables" quest. After those come "Components and You" quest and "The LV Age" quest. The LV Age unlocks "Heatproof Machine Casing" quest and "LV Steam Turbine" quest, and the turbine leads to "Polarizer" quest.[4]

Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown in the sources here. Check the quest book for how it connects.

How do you get started with Modern Industrialization?

6 parts

This section follows the order of the pack's quest book. The chapter "Modern Industrialization" sits in the Tech Mods group (chapter 28 of 31) and has 68 quests. 15 of those quests are not covered here, so check the quest book for them. The first quests are steam-age basics, and they set you up for everything else.[4]

Tip: This pack turns off spawnWithGuideBook and respawnWithGuideBook, so you won't be handed the mod's guidebook when you join or respawn. The quest book is your main guide.[5]

The Forge Hammer

Your first target is the Forge Hammer (quest "The Start of Modern Industrialization" quest). It smashes ores and turns ingots into plates, rings, rods and other materials. The quest book is honest that this is inefficient, because you keep remaking hammers, so plan to move on to machine processing with a Steam Macerator as soon as you can.[4]

The hammer is also an ore doubler: put iron, copper or tin ore in it and you get 2 raw ores per ore, and each raw ore can be smelted into an ingot.[6]

Plates and copper parts

Next, "Forge Ahead" quest asks for iron and copper plates plus a copper rod, a Copper Bolt and a Copper Curved Plate. These show up in a lot of later crafting recipes. Here are the two hammer recipes for the MI parts.[4][7]

A better way to mine

The Steam Mining Drill (quest "A Superior Tool" quest) mines a 3x3 area and has a Silk Touch mode. Silk Touch matters because processing ores in block form gives you more products and byproducts. The quest suggests mixing invar in a foundry for its recipe.[4][6]

The drill needs water and solid fuel such as coal. Right-click a water source to fill it, then right-click fuel onto the drill in your inventory. The fuel is used up slowly as you mine. Sneak and right-click to change its mode. The quest says it works with Ultimine.[4][6]

Bronze, steam and your first machines

For bronze, hammer copper and tin ingots into dusts, combine the dusts, then smelt the bronze dust. A mixer does this more efficiently. Remember that 9 tiny dusts make one dust.[8]

The Bronze Boiler ("Bronze Boiler" quest) comes after the Bronze Ingot quest. Feed it water, by bucket or a water pump, and burnable fuel like coal. Steam comes out of the output face with the square on it, and a wrench can change that face.[4]

Power is flexible in this pack. The quest "Powering Up" quest explains that energy systems are unified, so you can run MI machines from Mekanism generators and the other way round. In forgeEnergyPerEu, 1 EU is worth 10 FE, which is also the mod default.[4][5]

After the boiler, the book points you to the Bronze Macerator and Bronze Furnace ("Crushing & Smelting" quest). The macerator gives ore multiplication and byproducts. The book also offers the Bronze Mixer ("Bronze Mixer" quest) and the Bronze Compressor ("Bronze Compressor" quest), which presses materials into plates.[4]

Steel

The classic route starts with the Coke Oven ("Coke Oven" quest). It is a 3x3x3 multiblock mostly made of bricks, with item hatches, and it needs steam and coal. It produces Creosote Oil and Coal Coke.[4]

Macerate the coke into Coke Dust and combine it with iron to get Uncooked Steel Dust. Then you need a Steam Blast Furnace ("Steam Blast Furnace" quest) to turn it into steel. Besides its controller, it takes 29 Fire Clay Bricks and the same three hatches as the Coke Oven.[4][9]

You can also skip ahead. "The Gears of Industry" quest says any steel method in the pack is fine, for example Mekanism's Metallurgic Infuser. Once you have steel, "Steel Upgrade" quest lets you upgrade bronze machines with the Steel Upgrade, either in a crafting table with the machine or by using it on the machine in the world.[4]

What comes next

The path to the LV Age runs through rubber and cables. Mixing Coke Dust with water gives Raw Synthetic Oil, which you burn in the Steam Blast Furnace to get Synthetic Oil. Mixing that with paper gives rubber sheets. You also need the Steel Wiremill for wires. In this pack the tin cable recipe is changed:[4][7][10]

The pack changed this tin cable recipe.

From there, the quest "The LV Age" quest opens the LV Age with the Basic Machine Hull, which every LV machine needs. The LV Steam Turbine ("LV Steam Turbine" quest) turns your steam into power for those machines.[4]

How does Modern Industrialization work?

7 parts

Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and its progression is split into the Steam Age and the Electric Age. Steam setups are meant to be temporary, while Electric Age setups are expected to last because you can keep upgrading them. The overclock system lets your production adapt to your consumption automatically.[3]

Steam machines

A boiler sends steam to adjacent machines automatically, up to 8 mb per tick. Bronze machines handle recipes up to 2 EU/t, and 1 mb of steam is worth 1 EU, so a boiler at max temperature can power 4 machines at once.[11]

Steam machines accept items, steam or other fluids from any side. You can lock a slot from the interface so it only takes one type of item or fluid. Every machine has an output side with an auto-eject toggle, and hoppers or pipes can pull outputs from any side. A wrench rotates a machine, but breaking one with the wrench won't drop it, so use a pickaxe for that.[11]

Steel machines handle recipes up to 4 EU/t and run twice as fast as bronze as long as they stay within that limit. A multiblock with at least one steel hatch counts as steel tier.[12]

Multiblocks

Every multiblock has a controller, and you normally can't interact with it directly: all input and output goes through hatches. The Coke Oven is the first one you build. It needs 3 hatches (item input, item output and fluid input), and an optional fluid output for creosote. Creosote is a chanced output, so it is voided if there's no room for it. Forget a required hatch and the machine won't start.[13]

  1. Place the controller and hold a Wrench to see the missing blocks and any errors. Holding a hatch shows where it can go.[13]
  2. Fill in the structure and add the required hatches until the controller says Shape Valid.[13]
  3. For the Coke Oven, fill the fluid input hatch with steam and put coal in the item input hatch.[13]

The Large Steam Boiler uses fuel 8 times faster than a Furnace and makes 256 mb/t of steam when fully heated. Unlike the single block boilers, it loses 80% of any unconsumed heat, so it is efficient only when run continuously near max output. Its main block is Bronze Plated Bricks, and this pack changed that recipe.[7][14]

The pack also copies every Coke Oven recipe onto the Advanced Coke Oven and adds a recipe that turns a coal block into a coke block. It takes 2 EU/t for a duration of 5400, and also gives creosote (4500 mb at 50% probability).[15]

Electric machines and overclocking

Electric machines work like steam machines but use electricity, and they progressively overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t. Multiblocks cap at 128 EU/t by default, and that includes the Electric Blast Furnace. Upgrades added in the machine's menu raise those caps, and REI shows the exact amounts.[16][17]

You can also overclock by hand: right-click an electric machine with a lubricant container. Each 25 mb of lubricant adds 1 efficiency tick. Lubricant comes from mixing creosote and redstone.[16]

  • A Redstone Control Module lets redstone signals control electric machines and multiblocks. Configure it in your hand, then insert it into the machine or controller.[16]
  • An Overdrive Module stops efficiency dropping when a machine stops processing. The machine keeps consuming EU/t as if it were working, so it only pays off with a steady power supply.[18]
  • Right-click a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull to change it to MV tier, after which it only accepts MV cables.[18]

Power and cables

The Steam Turbine converts every mb of steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It sends power only to cables on its output side. Every cable has a tier that decides how much it can carry and what it connects to: copper, silver and tin are LV, cupronickel and electrum are MV.[19]

Networks pull in at most 256 EU/t on LV cables, 1,024 EU/t on MV and 8,192 EU/t on HV. Cables have a small internal storage, so an LV network can briefly exceed its limit. Single block electric machines only connect to LV cables. To move more energy, build several networks or use Transformers: going up a tier has 5 inputs and 1 output, going down has 1 input and 5 outputs.[19]

The Diesel Generator makes up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables. A fully heated Large Steam Boiler gives roughly twice the energy from the same fuel, and it can burn liquid fuels too.[20]

Fluids

Each fluid pipe holds exactly one bucket (1,000 mb), and directly connected pipes share their storage. Throughput is bounded by the network's total capacity, so 25 linked pipes can move up to 25,000 mb/t. Adding one steel tank (16 buckets) with an I/O connection raises that to 41,000 mb/t. You may still be limited by the machines or tanks at either end.[21]

The Large Tank stores 64 buckets per block of the structure, sides included. Only pipes can access it, through the controller or a Large Tank Hatch. Breaking the controller loses all the stored fluid.[22]

Items and automation

Up to 3 pipes fit in one block, and pipes of different colors won't connect. A wrench changes a connection type, and shift-right-clicking drops the pipe. Fluid pipes won't connect to empty pipes or blocks by default, but you can force a connection with the wrench.[23]

Item pipes don't connect to inventories by default, so you force the connection too. Their filter starts in whitelist mode, meaning nothing moves until you add items or switch to blacklist. You must configure both sides of the pipe. They insert into higher priorities first, and motors upgrade them.[23]

In this pack, item pipes move 16 items every 3 seconds, which matches the mod default. See baseItemPipeTransfer.[5]

A configuration card copies the settings of Item Pipes. Hold it in your offhand and it applies to every Item Pipe you place.[24]

The Configurable Chest has 27 configurable slots and the Configurable Tank has 9, each holding 16 buckets. Both have auto-eject. The Assembler can automate almost any recipe, up to 3 per Assembler with slot locking.[16][25]

Pack settings that matter

The pack also sets its own Electrolyzer recipe for UU Matter: one Mekanism antimatter pellet gives 5 mb of UU Matter for 40 EU/t over a duration of 2500. The Replicator needs 100 mB of UU Matter to duplicate an item.[28][29]

How do you progress through Modern Industrialization?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization has two chapters in the quest book, both in the Tech Mods group: "Modern Industrialization" (chapter 28 of 31, 68 quests) and "M.I.: High Voltage" (chapter 29, 70 quests). Follow them in order and you climb the whole tier ladder. The text of 26 of the High Voltage quests isn't covered in this guide, so check the quest book for those.[4][30]

One thing to know before you start: "Powering Up" quest explains that the pack unifies its power systems, so you can use and produce FE or MI energy. That means Mekanism generators can power MI machines and the other way round, and you can progress in whichever order you like.[4]

Steam age: bronze and steel

It starts with the Forge Hammer in "The Start of Modern Industrialization" quest. The quest calls hammering very inefficient and tells you to move on to machine processing as soon as you can. "Forge Ahead" quest has you make iron plates and copper components, and "Bronze Ingot" quest opens the path to MI's Bronze Age.[4]

The "Bronze Boiler" quest quest comes next, because your first machines need steam. From there the book unlocks the Coke Oven, the Bronze Mixer, the Bronze Macerator and Bronze Furnace, and the Bronze Compressor.[4]

The Steam Blast Furnace is your first big multiblock. It turns steam and uncooked steel dust into steel ingots. "The Gears of Industry" quest says you can also jump straight to steel with any steel method in the pack, such as Mekanism's Metallurgic Infuser. If you go that way, there is a checkmark quest (a quest in "Modern Industrialization") that lets you continue the MI line.[4]

Steel then unlocks "Steel Upgrade" quest, the Steel Wiremill and "Your First Quarry!" quest with the Steam Quarry.[4]

Tip: Hold the wrench and look at the base machine of a multiblock to see holograms of the blocks you need. The quest suggests keeping the wrench in your off-hand while building.[4]

LV: your first electricity

The LV path runs through rubber. "Creating Oil from Dust" quest starts you on synthetic oil, then "Rubber Sheet" quest makes the sheets in a mixer. The Analog Circuit is the basis of LV tech, and you can get it by converting a Mekanism Elite Control Circuit instead of crafting it. Then come "MI Cables" quest, "Components and You" quest and finally "The LV Age" quest, where you start making Basic Machine Hull.[4]

The LV Steam Turbine produces 32 EU/t, and LV cables can extract up to 256 EU/t from it. It unlocks the Polarizer, Electric Packer, LV Storage Unit, Electric Mixer and the Assembler. Automate hulls, circuits and components with Assemblers early.[4][16]

The Electric Blast Furnace needs the Cupronickel Coil and heatproof casings. It gets you Industrial Aluminum Ingot, though the quest notes you have to acquire aluminum nuggets first if you stay inside MI.[4]

MV: advanced machines and oil

After the Electronic Circuit Board and the Electronic Circuit (a Mekanism Ultimate Control Circuit works too), you reach the Advanced Machine Hull. It builds your MV machinery. You can also put one in an existing LV machine's upgrade slot to make it accept MV energy and recipes, so you don't rebuild everything each tier.[4][18]

MV also opens up the Large Motor, Large Pump, Electric Quarry, Centrifuge, Distillery, Vacuum Freezer, Chemical Reactor, Electrolyzer and Oil Drilling Rig. The MV Steam Turbine consumes up to 128 mb/t of steam for 128 EU/t, and the Advanced Large Steam Boiler quadruples your steam output.[4]

The pack changed the Frostproof Machine Casing recipe, which the Vacuum Freezer quest asks for.

HV: stainless steel and petrochemicals

Stainless steel is the gate. The Centrifuge gives you manganese from raw iron ("Manganese Crushed Dust" quest) and chromium from ruby dust ("Ruby Dust" quest). A mixer combines them into "Stainless Steel Dust" quest. An Electric Blast Furnace makes the hot ingot, and the Vacuum Freezer cools it in "Stainless Steel Ingot" quest. "Kanthal Coils" quest then upgrade the furnace for higher temperatures.[4]

Helium is part of this stretch. In this pack, a Distillery recipe added by the pack turns crude oil into Helium, which feeds "Helium Processing" quest.[4][7]

HeliumAdded by the pack

Distillery (modern_industrialization)

Recipe id: ftb:compat/modern_industrialization/modern_industrialization/distillation/crude_oil_3

"Digital Circuit Board" quest needs stainless steel and polyethylene, and "Digital Circuit" quest ushers in the High Voltage Age. The Turbo Machine Hull is the base for HV machines. After it come "Annealed Copper Ingot" quest, "Advanced Components" quest, the Distillation Tower and the Stainless Steel Drill, which brings in titanium, platinum and tungsten from the Electric Quarry.[4][30]

The pack changed this casing recipe, which the Distillation Tower quest asks for.

For power, the Pressurizer and High Pressure Large Steam Boiler give up to 2,048 mb/t of steam, where each mb of HP steam is worth 8 EU/t. The Large Steam Turbine makes up to 16,384 EU/t, and the Heat Exchanger recycles your HP water. The petrochemical quests (naphtha, ethylene, styrene, vinyl chloride and more) fill out the rest of the chapter.[4][30]

EV: the nuclear age

The Processing Unit needs a board, RAM and a silicon wafer. After it, "Highly Advanced Machines" quest welcomes you to the Nuclear Age and Extreme Voltage, using the Highly Advanced Machine Hull. You also build a Mixed Blastproof Ingot and Industrial TNT for the Implosion Compressor.[30]

To reach the Nuclear Reactor you need Nuclear Alloy Plate, which uses cadmium from processing monazite. The pack added several cadmium recipes, including a Macerator one for dust. The quest says this reactor does not explode or emit radiation. The simplest fuel is the Uranium Fuel Rod.[7][30]

Nuclear Alloy CasingChanged by the pack

Assembler (modern_industrialization)

Recipe id: modern_industrialization:assembler_generated/electric_age/casing/nuclear_casing

Machine upgrades follow the same ladder. "Basic Upgrades" quest come first, then "Advanced Upgrade" quest (8x more effective than basic), "Turbo Upgrade" quest (8x faster than advanced) and "Highly Advanced Upgrade" quest (8x faster than turbo).[4][30]

How does Modern Industrialization work with other mods?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization (MI) shares power, steam, fluids and materials with other mods in this pack. Here is where the quests, recipes and scripts connect it to them.[4][7][31]

Power, steam and steel

The quest "Powering Up" quest explains that the pack unifies its power systems, so you can use and produce either FE or MI energy. In practice, Mekanism generators can power MI machines and the other way around.[4]

Steam works across mods too. The "Bronze Boiler" quest quest says steam produced with Mekanism should work in MI machines, but it has to be liquid steam.[4]

For steel, "The Gears of Industry" quest tells you that you can skip the bronze age and use any steel production method in the pack. It names Mekanism's Metallurgic Infuser as one option, or you can stay with MI.[4]

Shared materials

Many MI recipes in the pack have been changed to use shared FTB materials, such as Bronze Plate. The pack changed the recipes for Bronze Plated Bricks and Bronze Barrel. The recipe dump also counts 74 MI macerator recipes that take MI items and output FTB materials. The pack changed the one that gives Bauxite Dust from Bauxite Crushed Dust. Here is the pack's crafting recipe for the bricks.[7]

Other mods can make MI's bronze parts as well. The pack added recipes in Create's pressing, Mekanism's compressing, the Ars Unification press and Extended Industrialization's bending machine that turn Bronze Double Ingot into plates. The Create and Mekanism versions give 2 plates. That means you can use whichever machine you already have set up.[7]

The pack's fluid tags put some Mekanism fluids alongside their MI counterparts. Ethene, heavy water, deuterium and tritium from Mekanism are tagged together with the MI versions. The pack also tags MI's synthetic oil as one of the oils for Oily Bees.[31]

In the quest book

The Modern Industrialization chapter sits in the Tech Mods group, as chapter 28 of 31, and has 68 quests. The Steam Mining Drill quest, "A Superior Tool" quest, notes that the drill works with Ultimine. Most of the chapter's other quests aren't covered here, so check the quest book for what they say.[4]

  6. "Highly Advanced Machines" quest follows the Processing Unit and opens the Nuclear Age. It leads to "Large Advanced Motor & Pump" quest and "Nuclear Alloy Plate" quest, then "Nuclear Reactor" quest. "Reactor Components" quest and "Reactor Mechanics" quest explain the reactor.[30]
  7. Fuel and endgame quests include "Titanium Drills" quest, "Uranium Fuel Rod" quest, "Plutonium Dust" quest, "HE MOX Fuel" quest, "Nuke" quest, "Quantum Circuit" quest, "Quantum Machine Hull" quest, "Quantum Upgrade" quest and "Quantum Gear" quest.[30]
  8. The final stretch is "The Fusion Reactor" quest, "Helium Plasma" quest and "Plasma Turbine" quest, which uses Helium Plasma to produce over 1 Million EU/t. Separately, "1.024 GIJJAAWHATS" quest leads to "Gravichestplate" quest.[30]

Power Generation

"Power & You" quest explains that EU, the unit MI uses, converts at a ratio of 1:10 to RF/t. The MI quests in this chapter are "LV Diesel Generator" quest (up to 64 EU/t), "MV Diesel Generator" quest (256 EU/t), "HV Diesel Generator" quest (1,024 EU/t) and "Large Diesel Generator" quest. The turbine line is "LV Steam Turbine" quest (32 EU/t), "MV Steam Turbine" quest (128 EU/t), "HV Steam Turbine" quest (512 EU/t) and "Large Steam Turbine" quest (16,384 EU/t). Each of these points you back to the MI questline.[32]

24 of the 41 quests in Power Generation are not covered here, so check the quest book for them.[32]

Which Modern Industrialization config options matter?

3 parts

Modern Industrialization has three config files in this pack: server, startup and client. The pack lists a mod default only for the numeric options, and every one of those is left at its default. The pack doesn't change any numeric value. For the on/off options the sources don't show a mod default, so below I just tell you what the pack sets.[5][26][33]

What changed in Modern Industrialization between versions?

4 parts

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Modern Industrialization 2.5.6, and the mod was already in the pack as of 1.0.3 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs for the last four releases, newest first. These are the mod's changes. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't say whether the pack tweaks any of these values or recipes.[2]

2.5.6 (the version in this pack)

  • Diesel tool recipes are now gated by aluminum rather than electronic circuits.[34]
  • Creative barrels can be extracted from again, and a bug that consumed steel upgrades for machines without "bronze_" in their id is fixed.[34]
  • Transformer recipes now work in practice the way EMI shows them, and a few edge cases where a machine slot's adjusted capacity was ignored are fixed.[34]
  • MI pipes no longer replace Mekanism's bounding blocks, which used to make Mekanism large machines delete themselves.[34]
  • Tools and the wrench can no longer be replaced by the pick action, and some machine blocks now accept redstone control modules clicked straight onto them instead of only through the GUI.[34]
  • A new config value controls the range of the multiblock highlight overlay.[34]

2.5.5

  • The large tank multiblock structure now allows any glass block.[35]
  • You can create ME wire connections by clicking the connector part with the wire.[35]
  • The Pressurizer and Implosion Compressor now use the correct machine casing for their hatches.[35]
  • Inserting items into machines is faster, and multiblock recipe stack sizes are now passed to EMI for its recipe tree.[35]

2.5.4

  • The hatch overlay now renders through blocks, and hatch outlines in guide scene multiblocks display correctly.[36]
  • The check for matching multiple recipes at once is narrowed to cases where the ingredients overlap.[36]

2.5.3

  • Camo pipes can no longer be waterlogged, which avoids rendering issues, and a client crash when mining a camouflaged pipe is fixed.[37]
  • The multiblock hatch overlay is clearer about which blocks are valid when many are adjacent.[37]
  • Custom multiblock machines can accept one block out of a block tag for a given position.[37]
  • The mod is now fully interoperable with IE creosote.[37]
