What is Productive Metalworks?

1 part

Productive Metalworks is the foundry mod in this pack. The quest book describes it as the way to smelt and forge alloys into various parts, which you then use to make tools, armor and more. This pack includes version 1.21.1-1.15.1.[1][2]

In the quest book, it lives in the "Gearing Up" chapter, which is chapter 14 of 31 and sits in the "Exploration & Combat" group. That chapter is about different ways to craft, enhance and enchant the gear you'll need on your adventures.[1]

The foundry quest line

Tip: To pour metal, select the fluid in the Controller, then click a drain with the Casting Basin below it. The quest says this process can be automated with redstone. The Foundry blocks in these quests can also be dyed to match your base.[1]

The sources here show only part of the "Gearing Up" chapter, so 44 of its 94 quests are not covered in this section. Check the quest book itself for the rest.[1]

How do you get started with Productive Metalworks?

4 parts

Metalworks starts with building a Foundry, and the pack's quest book walks you through it. Look in the "Gearing Up" chapter (group "Exploration & Combat", chapter 14 of 31) for the quest "Productive Metalworks Foundry" quest. It tells you to craft some Fire Clay, smelt it into Fire Brick, and use those bricks for the Foundry structure. It also points you to the Big Book of Metallurgy for how to set one up.[1]

Step 1: Fire Clay and Fire Bricks

Everything else is built from Fire Bricks, so make Fire Clay first.[1]

Then cook the clay into bricks. There is a normal smelting recipe and a blasting recipe, so use whichever you have set up.[3]

Step 2: The outer walls

The next quest, "Foundry Outer Structure" quest, asks for Black Fire Bricks. The quest says you need at least 21 Fire Bricks for the outer walls of the smallest Foundry, and that they can be dyed to match your base.[1]

The pack also adds a stonecutting route to the same block, which is handy if you already have Fire Clay Bricks from another mod.[3]

Step 3: Controller, tank and heating coil

"Main Foundry Components" quest covers the main components. The Black Foundry Controller and the Black Foundry Tank control the Foundry and store the smelting liquids, and the Liquid Heating Coil is the third item the quest asks for. The quest also says the walls need to be resistant enough to withstand the heat, and that these blocks can be dyed.[1]

Watch out: This pack sets foundryMaxVolume to 200, down from the mod default of 1,024. Plan your Foundry's internal size with that in mind.[4]

Step 4: Drains and casting

"Foundry Drains" quest asks for a Black Foundry Drain, a Casting Table, a Foundry Tap and a Casting Basin. The drain helps you extract metals onto a Casting Table, and the Casting Basin stores and creates metal blocks. The quest says not to pour anything yet, because you need Casts first.[1]

That leads to "Ingot Cast" quest and the Ingot Cast. Casts shape your metals into tools, weapons, armor, ingots and more. Select the fluid in the Controller, then click a drain with the Casting Basin below it to get your material out. You can automate this with redstone.[1]

The rest of the Metalworks quests are in the quest book, so keep following them from there.[1]

How does Productive Metalworks work?

7 parts

Productive Metalworks is built around a foundry: a multiblock you assemble from colored parts. It melts items into molten fluids that you then cast or alloy. The mod's language file lists the parts: fire bricks, controller, drain, tank, window and capacitor, each in a full set of dye colors. There are also a foundry tap, a casting basin, a casting table and liquid, powered and high powered heating coils.[5]

Foundry size limits

The config file sets how big your foundry can get. The big one for this pack is foundryMaxVolume: it is 200, and the pack changed it from the mod default of 1,024. So you get a much smaller maximum internal volume than the mod normally allows.[4]

The other size limits are the same as the mod defaults. foundryMaxCircumference is 200 and foundryMaxHeight is 20.[4]

Fluid storage and behavior

Watch out: An active foundry damages entities inside it, and this is switched on in this pack. Don't stand in it.[4]

Melting

Melting turns items into molten fluids. The mod uses a melting recipe type, and the pack adds many melting recipes of its own to unify materials. For example, an aluminum clump gives 180 mb of Molten Aluminum in the pack's melting recipe, while the mod's own recipe for crushed raw aluminum from Create gives 90.[3]

The pack also mirrors many of these melts in its Fusing Machine, so you have a second route to the same fluids. Fusing versions exist for fluids such as Molten Carbon, Molten Diamond and Molten Ancient Debris, and the recipes below show the exact inputs and amounts.[3]

Casting

Casting turns molten fluid back into solid items. The sources show two casting recipe types. Item casting is used for the Gear Cast and for the Meat Ingot, where the Ingot Cast is part of the recipe. Block casting is used for foundry parts such as the Black Foundry Capacitor. The recipes below show the exact inputs.[3]

Pack changes to fluids

This pack hides Molten Enderium and Molten Signalum from recipe viewers by removing their tags and adding them to the hidden-from-recipe-viewers tag. Don't expect to find them when you look things up.[6]

How do you progress through Productive Metalworks?

7 parts

Productive Metalworks has its own little quest line in the pack. It sits in the "Gearing Up" chapter (chapter 14 of 31 in the quest book, in the "Exploration & Combat" group), and it starts with "Productive Metalworks Foundry" quest. Everything below follows that chain, so the foundry gets built in the order the book wants.[1]

The quest path

  1. "Productive Metalworks Foundry" quest: craft some Fire Clay and smelt it into Fire Brick. The quest also points you to the Big Book of Metallurgy for setting up a Foundry.[1]
  2. "Foundry Outer Structure" quest: you need at least 21 Fire Bricks for the outer walls of the smallest Foundry. The quest asks for Black Fire Bricks, and these can be dyed to match your base.[1]
  3. "Main Foundry Components" quest: a Black Foundry Controller, a Black Foundry Tank and a Liquid Heating Coil. The controller runs the foundry and the tank stores the molten liquids.[1]
  4. "Foundry Drains" quest: a Black Foundry Drain, Casting Table, Foundry Tap and Casting Basin. The drain gets metal out onto a Casting Table, and the basin stores and creates metal blocks.[1]
  5. "Ingot Cast" quest: get an Ingot Cast. You pick the fluid in the Controller, then click a drain with the Casting Basin below it to get your material out. The quest says this can be automated with redstone.[1]

Step 3: Casts

The drains quest tells you not to pour anything yet, because you need Casts first. The ingot cast is made by casting in the Foundry, not by crafting.[1][3]

Melting mobs

"The Floor Is Lava" quest comes after Main Foundry Components. It says the Foundry can melt living things for matter: players give Molten Meat, Endermen give Molten Ender, Villagers and Market Merchants give Molten Emerald, Witches give Molten Amethyst, Bees give Honey and Blazes give Molten Blaze.[1]

Upgrading the foundry

Past the quest line, the recipes show a way to upgrade. The High Powered Heating Coil is cast from a Powered Heating Coil, and the pack has changed that casting recipe. The Black Foundry Capacitor is also made by casting.[3]

The "Getting Started" chapter also mentions the Foundry. In its GeOre farming quest, it lists Foundry Casting as one of the ways to get some GeOres. The rest of that chapter's quest text is in the quest book.[7]

How does Productive Metalworks work with other mods?

6 parts

Most of the ways Productive Metalworks links up with other mods go through its melting and casting recipes. Items from other mods get melted into molten fluids, and those fluids get cast into other mods' ingots, gears, plates and more. Here are the main connections in this pack.[3]

Melting items from other mods

The pack adds melting recipes for FTB Materials clumps. For example, an Aluminum Clump melts into 180 Molten Aluminum. The pack also adds a matching Fusing Machine recipe for the same result, and the same pattern repeats for copper and gold clumps. The recipe dump counts 129 melting recipes that take FTB Materials items.[3]

GeOre shards melt too. A Diamond GeOre Shard gives 100 Molten Diamond, and an Emerald GeOre Shard gives 100 Molten Emerald. Both are pack-added recipes.[3]

Create's Crushed Raw Aluminum melts into 90 Molten Aluminum, and Crushed Raw Copper melts into 90 Molten Copper. Honeycomb works as well: Honeycomb melts into 100 Honey and 50 Molten Wax.[3]

Casting into other mods' items

The casts from this mod produce items from several other mods. You can cast Create's Brass Ingot and Brass Nugget, and Mekanism's Bronze Ingot and Bronze Nugget. Gears are cast with the Gear Cast and 360 of the molten metal, and aluminum has two versions: Aluminum Gear and Industrial Aluminum Gear.[3]

Oritech

Oritech has dedicated compat recipes with the foundry. Its Nickel Clump and Platinum Clump melt into 90 molten metal each, and you can cast Steel Ingot, Platinum Nugget, Fluxite and Biomass. The foundry can also alloy Oritech's Molten Adamant, Molten Biosteel, Molten Duratium and Molten Energite.[3]

Hidden fluids

The pack's fluid script strips the tags from Molten Enderium and Molten Signalum and hides them from recipe viewers, so don't expect to find them in the pack.[6]

In the quest book

The foundry quests sit in the "Gearing Up" chapter, in the "Exploration & Combat" group (chapter 14 of 31). "Productive Metalworks Foundry" quest comes first. "Main Foundry Components" quest, "Foundry Outer Structure" quest and "Foundry Drains" quest follow it, and "Ingot Cast" quest comes after the drains quest. 59 more quests in that chapter, and the whole "Getting Started" chapter, are told in the quest book, so check it there for any other links.[1]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Productive Metalworks?

3 parts

The Productive Metalworks quests sit in the "Gearing Up" chapter, in the "Exploration & Combat" group (chapter 14 of 31 in the book). The chapter's intro quest, "Gearing Up For Adventure!" quest, says it is about crafting, enhancing and enchanting gear. The Foundry quests form their own small branch inside it.[1]

The Foundry line, in order

  1. "Productive Metalworks Foundry" quest is the starting point. It asks for Fire Clay and Fire Brick: craft the clay, then smelt it into bricks. The bricks build the Foundry structure, and the quest points you to the Big Book of Metallurgy for how to set one up.[1]
  2. "Main Foundry Components" quest comes after it and asks for a Black Foundry Controller, a Black Foundry Tank and a Liquid Heating Coil. The controller runs the Foundry and the tank stores the smelted liquids. The quest also says the Foundry base must withstand enough heat, and that these parts can be dyed to match your base.[1]
  3. "Foundry Outer Structure" quest also follows the first quest and asks for Black Fire Bricks. The quest text says you need at least 21 Fire Bricks for the outer walls of the smallest Foundry, and that they can be dyed.[1]
  4. "Foundry Drains" quest follows the first quest as well. It asks for a Black Foundry Drain, a Casting Table, a Foundry Tap and a Casting Basin. The drain helps you extract metal onto a Casting Table, and the Casting Basin stores and creates metal blocks. The quest says to hold off on pouring until you have some Casts.[1]
  5. "Ingot Cast" quest comes after the drains quest and asks for an Ingot Cast. The quest says Casts shape metals into parts for tools, weapons and armor, or into ingots and other forms. You select the fluid in the Controller, then click a drain with the Casting Basin below to get your material. It also says this can be automated with redstone.[1]

A side quest: The Floor Is Lava

"The Floor Is Lava" quest unlocks after the main components quest and is a simple checkmark. It explains that the Foundry can also extract matter from living entities.[1]

Mentioned in Getting Started

The Foundry also comes up earlier in the book. In the "Getting Started" chapter (group "Main Questline", chapter 4 of 31), an untitled quest, a quest in "Getting Started", unlocks after "Clusters of Creation" quest and covers the ways to get GeOres. One of them is Foundry Casting: some metals can be cast using the Productive Metalworks Foundry.[7]

Which Productive Metalworks config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Productive Metalworks keeps its foundry settings in one file, config/productivemetalworks-common.toml. Exactly one value in it is marked as changed from the mod default by this pack, and it's the one you'll notice most when building a foundry.[8]

The value this pack changed

foundryMaxVolume is set to 200 in this pack, while the mod default is 1024. This caps the internal volume of the foundry multiblock, so your foundry can be much smaller than the mod normally allows. Plan your build around that limit.[8]

Tip: If your foundry won't form, check the internal volume first. This pack's limit of 200 is well below the mod default of 1024, so a build that works in another pack may be too big here.[8]

Size and capacity limits

These are the same as the mod defaults, so only the volume cap differs from a standard install.[8]

Casting and fluid behavior

  • foundryCoolingModifier is 4, the same as the mod default. The cooling time of a cast item is the number of mb used in the recipe divided by this number.[8]
  • foundryTankTickRate is 21, the same as the mod default. It sets how many ticks pass between attempts at sharing fluid with tanks below the foundry.[8]

Foundry toggles

The on/off options are all set to true in this pack. An active foundry collects items dropped inside it (foundryCollectItems), damages entities inside it (foundryDamageEntities) and renders its inventory inside the multiblock (foundryRenderInventory).[8]

Watch out: Because entity damage is on, don't stand inside an active foundry. Item collection is on too, so items dropped inside it get collected.[8]
