What is FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion?
1 part
This companion mod is small and focused. It adds two energisers to the pack: the Titanium Energiser and the Quantum Energiser. The quest book describes them as machines that speed up energizing recipes, and the Quantum one is the faster of the two.[1]
You get FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion 21.1.55 in this version of the pack. It has been in the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
Both energisers are covered in the "Pina Colada" chapter. It is chapter 6 of 31 in the book, in the "Main Questline" group, and it has 39 quests.[1]
The first energiser quest is a quest in "Pina Colada". It has no prerequisite listed, and its text tells you the Titanium Energiser has served you well so far but you will need a much faster energiser from here on out.[1]
The upgrade is a quest in "Pina Colada". It unlocks after four quests: a quest in "Pina Colada", a quest in "Pina Colada", "Quantum Parts" quest and a quest in "Pina Colada". So you need the Titanium Energiser stage done first, plus the Chaotic Core, the Quantum Parts and the Lightning Collapse Matrix.[1]
How do you get started with FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion?
5 parts
The companion mod adds the AeroScoop, the Void Fishing Rod, the Wooden Bucket, the Skybound Anchor and a chain of Overcharged materials that lead up to the energisers. Here is the order I'd go in.[3]
Start with the Aero Scoop
Your first source of resources is the Aero Scoop on your starter island or ship, and "The Aero Scoop" quest walks you through it. You need a Cloth Mesh, which the quest says is usually in a barrel close to the Scoop. Place the mesh inside, and activating the contraption the Scoop is attached to activates the Scoop too. If it is on a ship, the Physics Assembler does that.[4]
The Scoop pulls items out of the air as it moves, so by itself it does nothing. Mount it on a moving contraption such as a bearing, a windmill or a Sable ship. Right-click it to install a mesh filter, since higher tiers scoop faster and last longer. Any chest, vault or barrel on the contraption receives the drops automatically.[3]
Get a Void Fishing Rod
The "Path of Cultivation" quest quest has you throw a regular fishing rod into the void, and a Void Fishing Rod eventually floats back up to you. You can also jump for it. With it you can fish up Essence straight from the void, even with no water nearby.[4]

This is a void conversion recipe, which is why it lists no item inputs.
Make a Wooden Bucket
The pack changed the Wooden Bucket recipe, so use the one below rather than what you remember from other packs. It is fragile: it has a chance to break when emptied.[3][5]

Keep a ship level with the Skybound Anchor
If you started on a ship, the Skybound Anchor is worth making. Place it on a Sable airship to keep it level. It counteracts pitch and roll but not yaw, and it needs no Stress Units.[3]

The pack tunes how firmly it rights your ship. In skybound_anchor.kp the pack sets 18 (mod default 4), and in skybound_anchor.kd it sets 6 (mod default 4). skybound_anchor.max_angular_acceleration stays at the mod default of 5.[6]
Work toward the energisers
The rest of the mod is a chain of Overcharged materials leading to the energisers. It starts with Overcharged Copper, which the pack lets you make from a copper ingot in several machines. One option is Create New Age energising.[5]
Energising (create_new_age)
Recipe id: ftb:create_new_age/energising/overcharged_copper
From there you can make an Overcharged Copper Sheet and Overcharged Copper Wire. Wire packs into an Overcharged Copper Wire Block, which you can break back down into 4 wire.[5]

Mechanical Crafting (create)
Recipe id: ftbskies2aerocompanion:titanium_energiser
The a quest in "Pina Colada" quest sits in the Piña Colada chapter (chapter 6 of 31 in the Main Questline). It tells you the Titanium Energiser has served you well, but you'll need a much faster one from there on out.[1]
The Getting Started chapter has 57 quests in total, and only some of them are covered here. The rest are in the quest book.[4]
How does FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion work?
6 parts
This pack's companion mod adds a handful of systems, and most of them hang off two ideas: moving contraptions and charging metals. Here is how each one works, as far as the pack's own files explain it.[3][7]
AeroScoop
The AeroScoop pulls items out of the air as it moves. Sitting still, it does nothing, because no air moves past it. You need to mount it on a moving contraption, such as a bearing, a windmill or a Sable ship.[3]
- Right-click the AeroScoop to install a mesh filter. Higher tiers scoop faster and last longer.[3]
- Mount it on a moving contraption. As the contraption moves, the AeroScoop fills its internal buffer with random drops.[3]
- Put any inventory on the same contraption, like a chest, a vault or a barrel. It receives the drops automatically.[3]
If you have Jade, it shows the filter's durability and efficiency, how many items are in the output buffer, and whether a filter is installed at all.[3]
Skybound Anchor
The Skybound Anchor keeps a Sable airship level. You place it on the ship, and it counteracts pitch and roll but does not affect yaw. It needs no Stress Units, so you don't have to give it any rotational power.[3]
The pack tunes how firmly it rights your ship. The proportional gain skybound_anchor.kp is 18 here (mod default 4), and a higher value means stiffer, faster righting. The derivative gain skybound_anchor.kd is 6 (mod default 4), and it damps the angular velocity. The config notes that critical damping is kd = 2*sqrt(kp).[6]
The safety cap skybound_anchor.max_angular_acceleration is 5 rad/s^2, which is the mod default. It is independent of the ship's mass. Raising it makes corrections snappier but jerkier.[6]
Charging metals
The pack adds a whole family of overcharged materials, and the companion mod owns several of them: copper, platinum, titanium and netherite, plus the diamond sheet. The pack's script defines a charging tier for each metal, including iron, gold and diamond, whose charged items belong to Create New Age. Each tier has an energy cost, and costs climb with the tier. Copper uses an energy value of 500, platinum 50,000 and titanium 100,000.[3][7]
You can charge things in whichever tech tree you already use, because the pack adds parallel recipes for each item. For example, a Copper Plate becomes an Overcharged Copper Sheet through Powah energizing, a Modern Industrialization electrolyzer or Create New Age energising. The Advanced AE reaction recipe type also covers charging, and uses energy plus a fluid input. The recipe dump counts 9 recipes of each of those types that make items from this mod.[5][7]
The electrolyzer's power draw scales with a per-tier multiplier in the script: 1 for copper, 7.5 for platinum and 10 for titanium.[7]
Energising (create_new_age)
Recipe id: ftb:create_new_age/energising/overcharged_copper
Charging a copper ingot with Create New Age energising.
Charging a whole block is the bulk route. The Advanced AE reaction recipe takes a metal block and gives back 9 charged ingots, using 7 times the single-item energy. For platinum, a block of platinum becomes Overcharged Platinum.[5][7]
Sheets, wire and wire blocks
Charged ingots turn into sheets in whichever machine you prefer. The pack adds ingot-to-sheet recipes for Overcharged Copper in the Create press, the Ars press, the Modern Industrialization forge hammer, the Extended Industrialization bending machine and the Mekanism compressor. Each one makes an Overcharged Copper Sheet.[5]
Sheets then become wire. The Create cutting recipe turns one copper sheet into 2 Overcharged Copper Wire, and a Mekanism sawing recipe also exists. The script's wire yield per sheet is 2 for copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite, and 1 for platinum and titanium.[5][7]

Void fishing rods
The mod has a ladder of void fishing rods: Void, Inferium, Prudentium, Tertium, Imperium, Supremium and the Awakened Supremium Void Fishing Rod. The recipe dump lists 7 recipes of the type void_conversion, one result per rod, and they show no item inputs.[3][5]

Unverified How the void conversion recipes are triggered, and what the rods catch, is not explained in the available sources.
Energisers and world generation
The mod also adds Platinum, Titanium, Netherite and Quantum Energiser blocks.[3]
Unverified What the energiser blocks do, and what power or items they use, is not covered by the available sources.
On the world side, the floating island structure is switched on in this pack's structure toggle config. Its placement config uses a spacing of 44 and a separation of 11.[8][9]
How do you progress through FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion?
4 parts
In this pack, the progression around this companion mod is a ladder of Energisers, a family of Overcharged materials that feed them, and two helpers: a ship stabiliser and a void fishing rod. The quest book leans hardest on the Energisers, so we'll start there.[1][5][10]
The Energiser ladder
The Energiser quests sit in the Pina Colada chapter, which is chapter 6 of 31 in the Main Questline and has 39 quests. The first one asks for the Titanium Energiser. Its quest text says it has served you well until now, but you'll need a much faster energiser from here on out.[1]
The pack changed the Titanium Energiser recipe. You can make it with Create mechanical crafting, or with a Modern Industrialization constructor recipe that the pack added. Either way it builds on the Platinum Energiser, so you upgrade rather than start from scratch.[5]

The next step is the Quantum Energiser, quest a quest in "Pina Colada". The quest book lists four quests before it: a quest in "Pina Colada", a quest in "Pina Colada", "Quantum Parts" quest and a quest in "Pina Colada". The Chaotic Core quest sends you to the End to slay an End Guardian and destroy its Chaos crystal. The Quantum Parts quest asks for a Quantum Shaft and a Quantum Rod.[1]
Like the Titanium tier, the Quantum Energiser has a pack-changed Create mechanical crafting recipe and a Modern Industrialization constructor recipe added by the pack. Both use up the Titanium Energiser.[5]

Overcharged materials
The Energiser recipes lean on Overcharged parts. The pack adds several routes to each, so you can use whichever machine line you already have running.[5]
- Overcharged Copper: charge a copper ingot in Powah energizing, Create New Age energising or the Modern Industrialization electrolyzer. Or run a copper block with 1,000 water through an Advanced AE reaction recipe.[5]
- Overcharged Titanium and Overcharged Platinum: each comes from its metal block plus 1,000 water in an Advanced AE reaction recipe.[5]
- Overcharged Copper Sheet: charge a Copper Plate in those same machines, or press overcharged copper ingots with Create pressing or a Modern Industrialization forge hammer.[5]
- Overcharged Copper Wire: cut a sheet with Create cutting for 2 wires, or use Mekanism sawing for a single wire. Wires craft into an Overcharged Copper Wire Block, and a block turns back into 4 wires.[5]
- Overcharged Netherite Wire follows the same pattern: cut an Overcharged Netherite Sheet for 2 wires in Create, or saw it for a single wire in Mekanism.[5]
- Overcharged Platinum Wire: made from a platinum ingot in the Modern Industrialization wiremill, or by cutting an Overcharged Platinum Sheet with Ars Unification.[5]
Skybound Anchor
In the Aeronautics chapter (chapter 5 of 31 in the Main Questline, 58 quests), the "Skybound Anchor" quest quest comes right after the Stability quest. Place the Skybound Anchor on a ship and it counters pitch and roll with no rotation, no stress and no fuel. It doesn't touch yaw, so you can still turn freely. It also won't fix a badly unbalanced hull, it just stops the wobble.[10]
The quest calls it this pack's shortcut. It says that for a starter ship or a flying base that mostly parks, it's all the stabilisation you need. For something that has to fly straight at speed, the quest says to save the Gyroscope.[10]

Early game: void fishing
Right at the start, in the Getting Started chapter, the Path of Cultivation quest introduces the Void Fishing Rod. If there's no water nearby, throw your regular fishing rod into the void and a Void Fishing Rod will eventually float back up to you. You can also jump for it.[4]
The "Effishency" quest quest after it is a one-time starter bonus. Be careful: checking it puts your team on the Path of Cultivation and locks out the other 2 path rewards.[4]
The pack also has an Awakened Supremium Void Fishing Rod. Like the basic rod, its recipe is a void conversion with no item inputs.[5]
How does FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion work with other mods?
4 parts
The overcharged materials and the energisers from this mod show up in recipes from Create New Age, Mekanism, Modern Industrialization, Advanced AE and more. The pack rewrote several of those recipes to use them.[5]
Making overcharged materials
You can make the overcharged items from FTB Materials items in four different machines, all added by the pack. Take Copper Plate as an example. It becomes Overcharged Copper Sheet through Create New Age energising, Powah energizing, the Modern Industrialization electrolyzer, or an Advanced AE reaction recipe (that one also needs 250 water). Copper wire, diamond plates, netherite plates, platinum and titanium items follow the same pattern.[5]
Energising (create_new_age)
Recipe id: ftb:create_new_age/energising/overcharged_copper_sheet
The Create New Age route, added by the pack.
Reaction (advanced_ae)
Recipe id: ftb:reaction/charging/overcharged_copper_sheet
The Advanced AE route, which also takes 250 water.
There are a few extra routes. In the Advanced AE reaction recipes, a Block of Platinum or Block of Titanium plus 1,000 water makes Overcharged Platinum or Overcharged Titanium. A Modern Industrialization wiremill turns a Platinum Ingot or Titanium Ingot into the matching overcharged wire.[5]
Mekanism compressing is another way to get sheets. It takes Liquid Oxygen and an overcharged ingot (any item in the matching overcharged ingot tag) and makes the overcharged sheet for copper, diamond, netherite, platinum or titanium.[5]
Overcharged parts in other mods' recipes
- Create cutting turns one Overcharged Diamond Sheet into 2 Overcharged Diamond Wire. Mekanism sawing does the same job but gives only 1.[5]
- The Create New Age Copper Circuit deploying recipe was changed by the pack. It now uses Blank Circuit and Overcharged Copper Wire.[5]
- The Solar Sail recipe was also changed by the pack. It uses an Photovoltaic Plate, Overcharged Copper Wire and a colourless glass pane.[5]
- The pack added excessive_utilities:qed recipes for several Modern Industrialization machines and parts. The Electric Blast Furnace, the Electrolyzer and the Cupronickel Coil all use Overcharged Copper Wire. The Memory Management Unit uses Overcharged Platinum Wire.[5]

The energiser chain
The energisers build on each other. The Netherite Energiser needs a Reinforced Energiser from Create New Age. The Platinum Energiser needs the Netherite Energiser, the Titanium Energiser needs the Platinum Energiser, and the Quantum Energiser needs the Titanium Energiser. The pack changed the Create mechanical crafting recipe for each one, and it also added a Modern Industrialization constructor version of each.[5]

In the quest book
The a quest in "Pina Colada" and a quest in "Pina Colada" quests sit in the "Pina Colada" chapter, which is chapter 6 of 31 in the "Main Questline" group. The Titanium Energiser quest tells you that you'll need a much faster energiser from there on.[1]
The Quantum Energiser quest comes after a quest in "Pina Colada", a quest in "Pina Colada", "Quantum Parts" quest and a quest in "Pina Colada". Quantum Parts asks for the Quantum Shaft and Quantum Rod. The Chaotic Core quest sends you to the End to slay an End Guardian and destroy its Chaos crystal.[1]
Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion?
3 parts
This mod's items turn up in three chapters of the Main Questline, in this order: Getting Started (chapter 4 of 31), Aeronautics (chapter 5) and Pina Colada (chapter 6). The mod adds four items, and each one has its own quest.[1][4][10]
Getting Started: the Void Fishing Rod
The first one is "Path of Cultivation" quest. It asks for a regular fishing rod and a Void Fishing Rod. The quest text says that if you have no water nearby, you can fish straight from the Void. Throw your regular fishing rod into the void and a Void Fishing Rod will eventually float back up to you. You can also jump for it.[4]
Next comes "Effishency" quest, which lists the Void Fishing Rod among its tasks and sits after Path of Cultivation. It is a one-time starter bonus for committing to Cultivation. Be careful here: checking its checkmark sets your team on the Path of Cultivation and locks out the other 2 path rewards.[4]
"Essential Waters" quest also follows Path of Cultivation. It asks for iron essence and inferium essence, which is what fishing for essence feeds into.[4]
Aeronautics: the Skybound Anchor
"Skybound Anchor" quest asks for the Skybound Anchor and comes after "Stability" quest. The quest calls it this pack's shortcut for stabilizing a ship. Place it on a ship and it counters pitch and roll with no rotation, no stress and no fuel. It doesn't touch yaw, so the ship still turns freely.[10]
Not every quest in the Aeronautics chapter fit into the text I had, so check the quest book for the rest.[10]
Pina Colada: the energisers
Two quests in this chapter ask for the mod's energisers. The first is a quest in "Pina Colada", which asks for the Titanium Energiser. Its text says the Titanium Energiser has served you well until now, but you'll need a much faster energiser from here on out.[1]
The faster one is a quest in "Pina Colada", which asks for the Quantum Energiser. It comes after four quests:[1]
- a quest in "Pina Colada"[1]
- a quest in "Pina Colada": slay the End Guardian and destroy its Chaos crystal in the End.[1]
- "Quantum Parts" quest[1]
- a quest in "Pina Colada"[1]
Which FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion config options matter?
2 parts
The options you are most likely to care about are the Skybound Anchor tuning values in the server config and the floating island structure settings.[6][8][9]
Skybound Anchor tuning
These options live in the server config and control how the anchor rights itself when it tilts. The pack changed two of them from the mod defaults and left the third alone.[6]
- skybound_anchor.kp is 18 in this pack (mod default 4). It is the proportional gain, so a higher value means stiffer, faster righting. The allowed range is 0.0 to 1000.0.[6]
- skybound_anchor.kd is 6 in this pack (mod default 4). It is the derivative gain, which damps the motion based on angular velocity. The config notes that critical damping is kd = 2*sqrt(kp). The allowed range is 0.0 to 1000.0.[6]
- skybound_anchor.max_angular_acceleration is 5, the same as the mod default, so the pack did not change it. It is a mass-independent safety cap on righting acceleration. Higher means snappier but jerkier corrections. The allowed range is 0.0 to 1000.0.[6]
Floating island structure
The floating island structure is switched on in this pack: the floating island entry in the structure toggle config is set to true.[8]
Its placement is set in the structure placement config. The floating island spacing is 44 and its separation is 11 in this pack.[9]
