Mekanism Lasers is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.1.10.3-a. This mod adds laser additions, such as laser stopper, laser tires, and so mutch more (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Mekanism Lasers?

2 parts

Mekanism Lasers is an add-on for Mekanism, and it can't run without it. It adds laser-based extras: laser doors, security systems, and the ability to upgrade lasers from basic to ultimate tiers. The mod's own page says it is still in development and that a lot is yet to be added.[1]

It isn't only a security mod. You can also use it to build an infinite ore generator.[1]

What you get in the pack

The pack's mod list shows version 1.1.10.3-a of the mod, shipped in a file with a b-patch suffix.[2]

The lasers go from basic to ultimate, and each tier has a toggleable version: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser and Ultimate Laser, plus Basic Toggleable Laser, Advanced Toggleable Laser, Elite Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser. The other item you'll meet is the Ore Generator.[1][3]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod appears in two quest chapters. In the "mekanism" chapter, "Generating Ores" quest asks you to get an Ore Generator and any one of the laser items, basic through ultimate, toggleable or not. That quest is set to come after the quest with the id 38FAD316AB487AD1.[3]

In the "resources_and_you" chapter, "Ore Generator, with Lazahs!" quest asks for the Ore Generator alone. It is set to come after the quest with the id 595F8AC6DB5DACD8.[4]

Tip: For the best experience, the mod's author recommends installing both Jade and JEI. They also recommend Mekanism Turrets & Fences if you want more protection for your base.[1]

How do you get started with Mekanism Lasers?

6 parts

Mekanism Lasers is an add-on that needs Mekanism to run. It gives you lasers you can upgrade through tiers, plus blocks for security setups and an ore generator. Here is the order I'd go in, and why.[1]

Step 1: Make a Basic Laser

Everything in this mod starts with the Basic Laser. The pack's Ore Generator recipe uses it, and the higher laser tiers are crafted from it. Here is the recipe as it works in this pack:[5]

Step 2: Build the Ore Generator

The Ore Generator is the main goal. The mod describes it as using light to convert energy to ores, and the project page calls it an infinite ore generator. In this pack it uses a recipe the pack added itself:[1][5][6]

This recipe is added by the pack.

The quest book tracks this too. Quest "Ore Generator, with Lazahs!" quest in the resources_and_you chapter asks you to get the Ore Generator. Quest "Generating Ores" quest in the mekanism chapter asks for the Ore Generator and any one of the laser items, basic or toggleable at any tier.[3][4]

Step 3: Get power from lasers

The Energy Transformer converts laser light into energy. Here is its recipe in this pack:[5][6]

Then upgrade your lasers

The mod lets you upgrade lasers from basic to ultimate tiers. Each tier is crafted from the one below it, so you can work up the chain as your Mekanism progression allows. Here are the next two steps:[1][5]

Toggleable lasers

Every tier also has a toggleable version that can be switched on and off. The Basic Toggleable Laser has one recipe. The advanced, elite and ultimate toggleable lasers each have a second recipe, and the pack changed those second recipes.[5][6]

How does Mekanism Lasers work?

4 parts

Mekanism Lasers builds on Mekanism's lasers and adds tiered lasers, blocks that control them, and an ore generator. The mod can't run without Mekanism. It's still under development, and its own project page says a lot of things are yet to be added, so the sources only explain part of how it works.[1]

Laser tiers and toggleable lasers

Lasers come in the tiers Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser and Ultimate Laser. The mod lets you upgrade a laser from basic up to ultimate.[1][5]

Every tier also has a toggleable version, such as the Basic Toggleable Laser. A toggleable laser works like a normal one, but you can switch it on and off.[5][6]

This pack changed how the higher toggleable lasers are made. The second recipe for each of the Advanced, Elite and Ultimate toggleable lasers is marked as changed by the pack. These recipes build on the previous tier's toggleable laser instead of the plain laser.[5]

The common config sets an energy cap for each laser tier. The basic laser's cap is [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.basicLaserEnergyCap]], set to 8,000,000. The advanced laser's cap is [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.advancedLaserEnergyCap]], set to 32,000,000. Both match the mod defaults, so the pack doesn't change them.[7]

The Ore Generator

The Ore Generator uses light to convert energy into ores. The mod's description also expands the abbreviation ODECM as Ore Duplicator Energy Condenser Matrix. The project page advertises an infinite ore generator as one of the mod's headline features.[1][5][6]

In this pack the Ore Generator is crafted with a recipe added by the pack. The recipe uses a Basic Laser as one of its inputs.[5]

The pack also changes two ore generator config values, and both are much lower than the mod's defaults. [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorCooldown]] is 1 second, where the mod default is 4. [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorFabricationCost]] is 50,000, where the mod default is 16,000,000. The config comments for both options are marked as deprecated.[7]

Tip: Compared with the mod's defaults, the Ore Generator here has a lower fabrication cost (50,000 instead of 16,000,000) and a shorter cooldown (1 second instead of 4).[7]

How do you progress through Mekanism Lasers?

5 parts

Mekanism Lasers gives you a ladder of lasers that follows Mekanism's tier names: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser and Ultimate Laser. Each of them also has a toggleable version.[5]

The laser tiers

Every tier above Basic is crafted from the laser of the tier below it, so you climb step by step. The Basic Laser is the entry point and starts from Mekanism's own Laser. None of these recipes are marked as changed by the pack.[5]

Toggleable lasers

The Basic Toggleable Laser is made from a Basic Laser. The Advanced Toggleable Laser, Elite Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser each have a mod recipe that upgrades the matching non-toggleable laser, plus an extra recipe that the pack changed. In the pack's version, each of those climbs from the toggleable laser of the tier below instead.[5]

Quests

Tip: A Basic Laser plus an Ore Generator is enough for both quests, so you can finish them early and upgrade your lasers later.[3][4][5]

Support blocks

The rest of the mod's blocks use the mod's normal recipes, and the recipe dump shows no pack changes for them: Energy Transformer, Interface Block, Laser Splitter, Laser Stopper, Remote Control and Energized Fence.[5]

How does Mekanism Lasers work with other mods?

5 parts

Mekanism Lasers is an add-on for Mekanism and can't run without it. In this pack, that link shows up in the crafting tree: every recipe that connects this mod to another mod uses Mekanism items. There's no link to any other mod's items here.[1][5]

Starting your laser line

The Basic Laser is built around Mekanism's own Laser. That makes it the doorway between the two mods, and it's a plain mod recipe, not one the pack changed.[5]

Toggleable laser upgrades use Mekanism tiers

The pack changes the recipes for the Advanced, Elite and Ultimate toggleable lasers. Each step up draws on the matching tier of Mekanism materials, such as alloys and control circuits, plus the toggleable laser from the tier below. You climb the same tier ladder you already know from Mekanism. The recipes are below, starting with Advanced Toggleable Laser.[5]

Quests

The pack's quest book points you at this mod in the Mekanism chapter and in the Resources and You chapter. Quest "Generating Ores" quest in the Mekanism chapter asks for the Ore Generator and for any one laser, basic or toggleable, of any tier. Quest "Ore Generator, with Lazahs!" quest in the Resources and You chapter also asks for the Ore Generator.[3][4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Mekanism Lasers?

2 parts

Mekanism Lasers shows up in the quest book in the "mekanism" and "resources_and_you" chapters. Neither quest has a title in the quest data, and both ask you to have the Ore Generator.[3][4]

Chapter "mekanism"

Quest "Generating Ores" quest has item tasks for the Ore Generator and for a laser. For the laser task, any of the tiers is accepted: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser or Ultimate Laser. The toggleable versions count too: Basic Toggleable Laser, Advanced Toggleable Laser, Elite Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser.[3]

You don't need a specific tier, so whichever laser you have ready satisfies that task. This quest comes after another quest in the same chapter, so finish that one first.[3]

Chapter "resources_and_you"

Quest "Ore Generator, with Lazahs!" quest is simpler. Its only task is an item task for the Ore Generator. It also comes after an earlier quest in its chapter, which you need to complete first.[4]

Tip: Both quests ask for the Ore Generator, so you can hand in the same machine type for each of them.[3][4]

Which Mekanism Lasers config options matter?

4 parts

Everything for this mod lives in one file, config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml. Most values are the mod's own defaults. Only two were changed by the pack, and both belong to a feature the file marks as deprecated.[7]

Values the pack changed

  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorCooldown]] is 1 in this pack. The mod default is 4. The file describes it as the deprecated ore generator cooldown, in seconds.[7]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorFabricationCost]] is 50,000 in this pack. The mod default is 16,000,000. The file describes it as the deprecated energy cost of fabricating ore.[7]

[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorNumberOfOres]] is also marked deprecated. It is 1 here, the same as the mod default.[7]

Laser energy

The four laser tiers all keep the mod's default energy settings. Each tier has a capacity option and a use option.[7]

  • Basic laser: [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.basicLaserEnergyCap]] is 8,000,000 and [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.basicLaserEnergyUse]] is 30,000.[7]
  • Advanced laser: [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.advancedLaserEnergyCap]] is 32,000,000 and [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.advancedLaserEnergyUse]] is 120,000.[7]
  • Elite laser: [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.eliteLaserEnergyCap]] is 128,000,000 and [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.eliteLaserEnergyUse]] is 480,000.[7]
  • Ultimate laser: [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ultimateLaserEnergyCap]] is 512,000,000 and [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ultimateLaserEnergyUse]] is 1,920,000.[7]

The ODECM ore generator

This is the infinite ore generator the mod advertises. Its main options are all at the mod defaults where the file lists one: [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ODECM_Progress]] is 200 ticks per cycle, [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ODECM_TickCost]] is 100,000 energy per tick, and [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ODECM_OutputAmount]] is 1 ore returned per cycle.[1][7]

[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ODECM_Generator]] is set to [1, 1.5, 2, 6, 9, 25]. The file says each number tells the generator by how much it will improve, and the list needs at least as many entries as there are ODECM generator versions.[7]

Unverified The file shows no mod default for the ODECM generator improvement list, so we can't confirm whether the pack changed it.

Ore blacklist

[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.blacklistedOres]] is a list of ores that are blocked from generation. In this pack it is very long. It covers vanilla ores such as the deepslate variants, Mekanism's own ores, and ores from many other mods in the pack, including ftbmaterials, modern_industrialization and malum.[7]

Unverified The file doesn't show the mod's default blacklist, so we can't say which entries the pack added.

What changed in Mekanism Lasers between versions?

1 part

There are no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs. FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Mekanism Lasers 1.1.10.3-a, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier.[2]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 1.1.10.2: added the Energy Transformator, which converts lasers into usable energy.[8]
  • 1.1.10.3-a: fixed an issue where lasers were toggled when you added them to or removed them from your remote.[9]
  • 1.1.10.3-a: added a multiblock structure that the changelog says will be changing the ore generator. The author also says more tiers of it are coming and that all lasers are 4x better than the previous ones.[9]
  • 1.1.10.3-a: fixed an issue with the energized fence.[10]
Tip: If you built lasers before the 1.1.10.3-a update, the remote toggle fix means adding or removing lasers on your remote no longer flips them on or off by accident.[9]

One small detail: the file in the pack is named mekanism_lasers-1.1.10.3-b-patch.jar, while the pack's mod list gives the version as 1.1.10.3-a.[2]

Unverified No changelog for the b-patch file was provided, so what it changes compared with 1.1.10.3-a is unverified.
