Ars Nouveau is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 5.13.2. Craft spells and construct magical automations (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

Stuck? Why it might not be working

  • Not enough source nearby
In All the Mods 10 8.2, Ars Nouveau 5.13.1, Not enough source nearby means the loaded source jars in Manhattan range 10 add up to less than the recipe's source cost. The apparatus does not draw from one jar. One full jar is 10,000, which covers every enchantment the mod ships, and it does not cover the pack's alloy block at 90,000.

What is Ars Nouveau?

1 part

Ars Nouveau is a magic mod inspired by Ars Magicka. You build your own spells, craft magical artifacts and trinkets, perform rituals, power magical machines, and automate your base with little magical helpers. It's for you if you like designing your own spells instead of just picking from a fixed list. It's also for you if you want a magic tech line with some personality.[1]

This pack ships Ars Nouveau 5.13.1. The mod's documentation lives in-game in a Patchouli book, so that's your reference while you play.[1][2]

Where it fits in the pack

Ars Nouveau has its own quest chapter, and it also shows up in the opening chapter. The first quest to chase is the Novice Spell Book, which appears in both places: "Making Magic!" quest in the opening chapter and "Welcome To Ars Nouveau!" quest in the mod's own chapter. The Mage's Spell Book quest follows it.[3][4]

After that, the chapter branches out. Here is the rough order the quests unlock in:[3]

  1. Source basics: the Imbuement Chamber and Source Gem come first, with the Scribe's Table and Sourceberry alongside them.[3]
  2. Source storage and power: the Source Jar opens up the sourcelinks (such as the Volcanic Sourcelink and Agronomic Sourcelink) and the Source Relay line.[3]
  3. Crafting infrastructure: the Sourcestone and Arcane Pedestal quest comes before the quests for the Enchanting Apparatus with its Arcane Core, and for the Ritual Brazier.[3]
  4. Gear and helpers: the apparatus quest unlocks trinkets like the Amulet of Mana Boost and the Dominion Wand. The wand in turn leads to familiar and helper charms such as the Starbuncle Charm, Wixie Charm and Bookwyrm Charm.[3]
  5. Late chapter: the Summon Wilden ritual (Summon Wilden) leads to the Wilden Tribute quest, and that leads to the Archmage Spell Book quest.[3]

How do you get started with Ars Nouveau?

6 parts

The pack's Ars Nouveau quest chapter takes you through the mod in a set order, so you can follow it step by step. Here are the first steps, and what each one leads to.[3]

Start with the Novice Spell Book

Everything starts with the Novice Spell Book. It is the first task in the Ars Nouveau chapter ("Welcome To Ars Nouveau!" quest), and it also shows up as a task in the_beginning chapter ("Making Magic!" quest). The next quest in the chapter asks for the Mage's Spell Book ("Upgrading Our Spell Book" quest), which is the upgraded version of this book.[3][4]

Imbuement Chamber and Source Gems

Next the quest book asks for an Imbuement Chamber and a Source Gem ("Imbuement Chamber" quest). Get these early. Source gems go into many of the recipes you will want next, including the pedestal, the core and the sourcelinks.[3][5]

Scribe's Table and Sourceberries

The Imbuement Chamber quest, the Scribe's Table quest ("The Scribe's Table" quest) and the Sourceberry quest ("Restoring Mana" quest) all share the same prerequisite quest. The Scribe's Table leads into the glyph quests, such as Glyph Aoe, Glyph Heal and Glyph Blink.[3]

Source Jar, Sourcestone and Arcane Pedestal

After the Imbuement Chamber quest comes the Source Jar quest ("Source" quest). It opens the sourcelink quests, for example the Agronomic Sourcelink and the Alchemical Sourcelink. The other branch asks for Sourcestone and an Arcane Pedestal ("Sourcestone" quest). This is the pedestal recipe:[3]

Enchanting Apparatus and Arcane Core

The pedestal quest leads to the Enchanting Apparatus and the Arcane Core ("The Enchanting Apparatus" quest). This is the Arcane Core recipe:[3]

Once the Enchanting Apparatus is set up, a lot opens up. In this pack the Dominion Wand, the Amulet of Mana Boost and the Amulet of Mana Regen all use the Enchanting Apparatus recipe type, not a normal crafting table. Here is the wand as an example:[5]

Upgrade to the Mage's Spell Book

Your Novice book becomes the Mage's Spell Book through a book upgrade recipe, not a normal craft. Use the recipe below.[5]

Tip: Work through the quests in the order above and each step gives you something the next one needs. The quest chapter shows which quest follows which, so use it as your checklist.[3]

How does Ars Nouveau work?

6 parts

Ars Nouveau describes itself as a mod for crafting your own spells, building magical machines and automating your base with magical servants. Its documentation is the in-game Patchouli book, and you get the Worn Notebook from a book and 1 Lapis Lazuli. The in-game entries for most machines were not available to me as readable text, so this section sticks to what the pack's configs, scripts and recipes show.[1]

Mana

Your spells run on mana. Here are the values from the pack's server config.[6]

If you want more max mana from gear, the Amulet of Mana Boost is made at the Enchanting Apparatus.[5]

Recipe id: ars_nouveau:amulet_of_mana_boost

Spell limits and glyph costs

The pack enforces both the augment cap (spell_casting.enforceCapOnCast) and the glyph-per-spell limit (spell_casting.enforceGlyphLimitOnCast) when a spell is cast. Infinite spells is off (spell_length.infiniteSpells). If it were turned on, the config says its value (30 here, set by spell_length.infiniteSpellLimit) would be added to the base glyph limit for spellbooks.[6]

Every glyph has its own config file in config/ars_nouveau with a cost, a tier and a per-spell limit. Here are some of the pack's values, none of them changed from the mod defaults.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

The starter glyphs are Touch, Self and Projectile. They cost 5, 10 and 10 respectively.[18][19][20]

A few glyphs have special settings. Linger costs 500 and can appear only once per spell. Rewind costs 100, rewinds 40 ticks before augments, and entities track 60 ticks of motion and health. Pantomime allows only one Dampen augment.[21][22][23]

Watch out: The pack changed Delay. Its extend time is 0.25 seconds per Extend Time augment, where the mod default is 1. The base delay is still 20 ticks, so Extend Time works in smaller steps than you may expect.[24]

Crafting stations

Glyphs are learned and crafted at the Scribe's Table. The pack stops coins from being right-clicked into it, because that would cause a visual desync with your Coin Pouch.[25]

The Alteration Table is built on top of a Scribe's Table.[5]

The pack also adds an Enchanting Apparatus recipe, id ftb:ruined_book, that costs 5,000 source and turns a Ruined Book into two.[27]

Potion machines

The Potion Melder merges potions from its input jars, and the pack keeps the mod defaults. Each cycle it takes 200 from each input jar (block.melderInputCost), outputs 100 (block.melderOutput) and uses 300 source (block.melderSourceCost). The config counts 100 as one potion. The enchanted flask caps at potion level 255 (block.enchantedFlaskCap).[28]

Servants and automation

Several familiars and creatures produce resources on a timer. These are the pack's values.[28]

For item storage, a Storage Lectern links to inventories within 30 blocks (blocks.lecternLinkRange). Each bookwyrm can support 8 inventories (general.bookwyrmLimit). Warp portals are enabled (warp_portals.enableWarpPortals).[6][28]

Pack-specific recipes

The pack adds two cloche recipes that multiply Bastion Fruit, one on Imperium Farmland and one on Primogel Soil.[5]

How do you progress through Ars Nouveau?

5 parts

Ars Nouveau's quest chapter in this pack is a branching tree, not a single straight line. You start with a spell book, move on to the Imbuement Chamber and Source, then split into glyphs, Source automation, the Enchanting Apparatus and finally the Archmage book. Here's the order the quests take you through.[3]

Step 1: Spell books and Source

  1. Get the Novice Spell Book. It has its own quest in this chapter ("Welcome To Ars Nouveau!" quest) and a matching one in the early-game chapter ("Making Magic!" quest).[3][4]
  2. Upgrade it to the Mage's Spell Book ("Upgrading Our Spell Book" quest), which is the next quest after the Novice book.[3]
  3. Make an Imbuement Chamber and a Source Gem ("Imbuement Chamber" quest). The Source Jar, the Sourcestone and Arcane Pedestal, and the essence quests all follow this one.[3]

Book Upgrade (ars_nouveau)

Step 2: Pick your branches

The Imbuement Chamber, Scribe's Table ("The Scribe's Table" quest) and Sourceberry ("Restoring Mana" quest) quests all follow the same earlier quest, so you can take them in any order. The Scribe's Table is where your glyph quests come from.[3]

Watch out: The pack changed the Glyph of Extract recipe from the mod's default. Use the recipe below, not one from the mod's own docs or another pack.[5]

Step 3: Sourcestone, pedestals and the Enchanting Apparatus

The Sourcestone and Arcane Pedestal quest ("Sourcestone" quest) is the gateway to the next tier. It leads to the Ritual Brazier ("Rituals" quest) and to the Enchanting Apparatus with the Arcane Core ("The Enchanting Apparatus" quest).[3]

The Apparatus quest opens a lot at once: the discount rings, the levitation and unstable-gifts belts, the mana amulets, the jars of light and voiding, the Magebloom quest and the Dominion Wand ("More Control" quest). The Dominion Wand in turn leads to the familiar and charm quests, such as the Starbuncle, Wixie, Drygmy, Whirlisprig and Amethyst Golem charms and the Bookwyrm charm with its Storage Lectern.[3]

Step 4: Magebloom, threads and armor

The Magebloom Seed and Magebloom Fiber quest ("Magical Seeds" quest) branches two ways. One path goes through Blank Parchment to the Warp Scroll and Basic Spell Turret. The other goes through the Alteration Table and Blank Thread ("Making Alterations" quest).[3]

The Alteration Table quest unlocks three armor quests: Sorceror's ("Sorcerer Set" quest), Arcanist's ("Arcanist Set" quest) and Battlemage's ("Battlemage Set" quest). In the pack's recipes, the Arcanist and Battlemage pieces are Enchanting Apparatus recipes. Here are the chestpieces as examples.[3][5]

Step 5: Archmage

The end of the chapter is the Archmage Spell Book ("The Archmage Spell Book" quest). To get there you go through the Ritual Brazier, then the Summon Wilden quest ("Tablet of Summon Wilden" quest), then the Wilden Tribute quest ("Wilden Tribute" quest). The Archmage book is another book upgrade, this time from the Mage's book.[3][5]

How does Ars Nouveau work with other mods?

3 parts

Ars Nouveau doesn't stand alone in this pack. Several add-ons build their recipes on top of Ars Nouveau items, and a few of those recipes also pull in items from completely different mods. Here's how it all connects, based on the in-pack recipes.[5]

Ars Additions

Most of the big Ars Additions items are crafted at the Enchanting Apparatus. The pack has changed several of these recipes, including the Advanced Dominion Wand, which upgrades the Dominion Wand, and the Jar of Miner's Wisdom. So don't trust the mod's default recipes for them.[5]

The Ender Source Jar is the clearest cross-mod link. It starts from a Source Jar, but the pack's version also needs Proto Chorus and Prismatic Xychorium. That means you can't finish it with Ars Nouveau materials alone. The pack changed this recipe too.[5]

Ender Source JarChanged by the pack

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_additions:apparatus/ender_source_jar

The pack also changed the chain and lantern recipes, such as the Archwood Chain, the Archwood Lantern and the Magelight Lantern. They combine Ars Nouveau materials like Archwood Planks, Sourcestone and Source Gem with the common iron nugget tag. The Golden Magelight Lantern also uses the gold nugget tag.[5]

Ars Additions also adds sourcestone building blocks: cracked variants, walls, doors, trapdoors and buttons. Most of them are made from Sourcestone or Smooth Sourcestone, either by crafting or in a stonecutter. The Ars Additions glyphs Glyph Mark and Glyph Recall use Ars Nouveau essences, plus an Ender Pearl. The Locate Structure ritual item uses a Compass and a Vexing Archwood Log.[5]

Ars Elemental

Ars Elemental armor is an upgrade of Ars Nouveau armor. Each piece uses an armor upgrade recipe that takes an Ars Nouveau armor piece, an element essence, a Mark of Mastery and a Netherite Ingot. For example, the Arcanist's Treads become the Aethermancer's Boots with Air Essence. The Aquamancer and Thunderguard lines follow the same pattern.[5]

Armor Upgrade (sauce)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:air_boots

The Slipstream Current Elevator is another recipe the pack changed. It's made at the Enchanting Apparatus from Ars Nouveau drops, a Shulker Shell and the gold storage block tag. Other Ars Elemental recipes build directly on Ars Nouveau blocks, like the Advanced Spell Prism, which upgrades the Spell Prism, and the Wind Warper Relay, which upgrades the Source Relay: Warper.[5]

Ars Controle and Occultism

The Glyph Filter Random glyph is made directly from Glyph Randomize. The in-game guide also has an Ars Ocultas entry that describes Occultism integration for Ars Nouveau. I found no in-pack recipes or quests for it, so I can't say what it changes here.[5][29]

Tip: The Ars Nouveau quest chapter only asks for Ars Nouveau items. The add-on items above won't show up as quest tasks there, so you'll need the recipes to find your way to them.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Ars Nouveau?

8 parts

Ars Nouveau has its own quest chapter in the pack, and the quests have no titles. That's why they show up below as quest links. Almost every quest is a "get this item" task, so you progress by crafting or finding things as you go. Where a task says "any of", one of the listed items is enough.[3]

Getting started

The chapter opens with the Novice Spell Book in "Welcome To Ars Nouveau!" quest. "Upgrading Our Spell Book" quest follows and asks for the Mage's Spell Book. The Novice Spell Book also appears as a quest in the Beginning chapter, which comes after another quest from that chapter.[3][4]

The main tree hangs off a quest that isn't listed in the sources I was given, so I can't say what it asks for. Three quests unlock from it, and everything else branches from those three.[3]

After the Imbuement Chamber quest, "Source" quest asks for a Source Jar. Also unlocked from the Imbuement Chamber quest are "Imbued Essences" quest, which accepts any one essence (Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Abjuration, Conjuration or Manipulation), and "Sourcestone" quest, which asks for Sourcestone and an Arcane Pedestal.[3]

The Source Jar quest opens your power-generation options. Each of these asks for one sourcelink, and the first also asks for a Potion Jar:[3]

The Source Relay quest unlocks four relay variants: "Warping Source" quest for the Source Relay: Warper, "Source Splitting" quest for the Source Relay: Splitter, "Source Deposits" quest for the Source Relay: Depositor and "Source Collection" quest for the Source Relay: Collector.[3]

Glyphs

Three quests unlock after the Scribe's Table, and each accepts any one glyph from its group.[3]

Rituals and the Archmage book

The Sourcestone and Arcane Pedestal quest leads to "Rituals" quest, which asks for the Ritual Brazier. Three ritual quests follow it: "Tablet of Containment" quest (the Containment and a Containment Jar), "Tablet of Summon Wilden" quest (Summon Wilden) and "Tablet of Awakening" quest (Awakening). Summoning the Wilden leads to "Wilden Tribute" quest for the Wilden Tribute. That in turn leads to the end of this line, "The Archmage Spell Book" quest, which asks for the Archmage Spell Book.[3]

Enchanting Apparatus and gear

The other branch from the Sourcestone and Arcane Pedestal quest is "The Enchanting Apparatus" quest, which asks for the Enchanting Apparatus and an Arcane Core. It opens a lot of quests:[3]

Familiars and helpers

Everything here unlocks after the Dominion Wand. "Whirlisprig Farming" quest asks for the Whirlisprig Charm and "Familiar Beds" quest for the Orange Magebloom Bed. "Drygmy Farms" quest wants a Drygmy Token and a Drygmy Charm, and "Magical Squirrels" quest wants the Starbuncle Charm. "Amethyst Farming" quest asks for the Amethyst Golem Charm and "Wixie Autocrafting" quest for the Wixie Charm. Finally, "Bookwryms and Magical Storage!" quest asks for the Bookwyrm Charm and a Storage Lectern.[3]

Parchment, armor and turrets

The Magebloom quest leads to "Transcribing Our Spells" quest (Blank Parchment) and "Making Alterations" quest (Alteration Table and Blank Thread). Parchment unlocks "Warp Scroll" quest for the Warp Scroll and "Basic Spell Turret" quest for the Basic Spell Turret.[3]

The Alteration Table unlocks three full armor-set quests. Each asks for all four pieces: "Sorcerer Set" quest for the Sorcerer set, "Arcanist Set" quest for the Arcanist set and "Battlemage Set" quest for the Battlemage set.[3]

Enchanter's tools

The last group of quests all unlock after a quest that isn't listed in the sources, so I can't say what it asks for. Each wants one item:[3]

Which Ars Nouveau config options matter?

4 parts

Most of the Ars Nouveau options for this pack sit at the mod default. In the config files I can see, only one option is flagged as changed by the pack. Everything below is the pack's actual value, and I'll say so whenever it differs from the default.[6][7][24][28][30]

The one value the pack changed

The Delay glyph's extend time (general.extend_time) is 0.25 seconds in this pack. The mod default is 1.[24]

The rest of Delay is untouched: base duration is 20 ticks (general.base_duration) and randomize chance is 0.25 (general.randomize_chance), both at the mod default.[24]

Mana settings

The mana values listed below match the mod default in this pack.[6][7]

Spell limits

The server config enforces both the augment cap (spell_casting.enforceCapOnCast) and the glyph-per-spell limit (spell_casting.enforceGlyphLimitOnCast) when you cast. Infinite spell length (spell_length.infiniteSpells) is off. If someone turns it on, the extra length is 30 (spell_length.infiniteSpellLimit).[6]

A few glyph files also carry their own restrictions:[31][32][33][34][35]

  • Burst costs 500, can appear only once per spell, and can't share a spell with Wall or Linger.[32]
  • Cold Snap is limited to 2 Amplify and 1 AOE augments.[33]
  • Crush and Cut are each limited to 2 Amplify augments.[34][35]
  • Break is a starter glyph and limits Fortune to 4.[31]

Client and world options

Dynamic lights are switched off in the client config (lights.lightsEnabled).[30]

The held-item light levels are already filled in (lights.item_lights). For example, a torch is set to 14 and a lava bucket to 15.[30]

Warp portals are enabled (warp_portals.enableWarpPortals). Caster Tomes can spawn in dungeon loot (item.spawnTomes). You don't get a book on login, because general.spawnBook is false.[6][28]

What changed in Ars Nouveau between versions?

4 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Ars Nouveau 5.13.1, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first, so you can see what has changed on the way to the version you're playing.[2]

5.13.1 and 5.13.0

  • 5.13.1: projectiles now keep their momentum when they pass through spell prisms. Caster tome names and flavor text are now translatable. There is also a crash fix for glyph recipes with more than 10 items, and a fix for abjuration essence not clearing prestidigitation.[36]
  • 5.13.0: the spell particles screen gets a preview button so you can see your selected effects and sounds. Drygmy and Starbuncle painting blocks are added, and automated enchanting apparatus setups perform better. Bubbles no longer target Create contraptions.[37]

5.12.1 down to 5.11.1

  • 5.12.1: repository and lectern caching are faster. It also fixes a dupe involving interact and buckets, and tomes having their discount applied multiple times.[38]
  • 5.11.7: Amethyst Golems get a smaller hitbox and no longer collide or get pushed, like starbuncles, which should stop them getting stuck on corners. Starbuncles and golems no longer cause out of memory crashes when pathing from the real world to blocks on sable levels.[39]
  • 5.11.6: fixes a client memory leak with portals, and mana values not updating after learning a new glyph until you used a spell book. In creative mode, interacting with a source jar adds source, or removes it if you crouch.[40]
  • 5.11.4: planarium updates are now batched with a configurable value, so frequently updated planariums cause less lag. Warp portals now load the destination dimension instead of the origin when teleporting, and the storage lectern inserts items faster.[41]
  • 5.11.3: weather and time rituals can now work in other dimensions. A new config disables the conversion of Shady Villagers (existing ones stay). Several spell arrow bugs are fixed: pierce deflecting or phasing, casting twice, and crashes on reload.[42]
  • 5.11.1: the spell crafting UI gets an Info icon covering spell import/export and keybinds for moving glyphs between slots. The particle effects UI gets a Clear button to reset the timeline to its defaults.[43]

5.10.6 down to 5.10.2

  • 5.10.6: adds a config to invert lectern scrolling, a blacklist for Intangible, and particle timeline support for caster tomes. It also adds compatibility with LambDynamicLights and fixes a crash with it.[44]
  • 5.10.5: Underfoot can now target entities below the player and any player vehicles. Magical armor no longer drains mana when there is nothing to repair.[45]
  • 5.10.4: glyphs in the spellbook now show as one contiguous list, and decoys render player capes. Fixes include a dupe with spell bows and infinity, and summons that couldn't be dispelled.[46]
  • 5.10.3 (and 5.10.2, which lists the same changes): the Vitalic sourcelink baby growth tick range is now 15, matching the other events. Filters now stop runes from casting, and amplify now increases damage on wind shear.[47][48]

5.9.4 and 5.9.2

Versions 5.9.2 and 5.9.4 list the same headline change: fully customizable particle and sound timelines for particle generating glyphs. The Color and Sound menu was merged into Spell Styles, and Presdigitation was added as a glyph that uses the new system. Lectern auto-import can also be turned off with a redstone signal, and blink and warp now fire sound events.[49][50]

Unverified Which FTB Skies 2 release moved Ars Nouveau from one of these versions to the next is not covered by the available sources, and there are no pack changelog entries for this mod.
