What is Roots Classic?
2 parts
Roots Classic is in the pack as version 1.21.1-1.5.10. It was first included in version 0.56 or earlier.[1]
The pack's quest book intro, "Roots Classic" quest, says Roots Classic may look small in JEI but has a lot to it. It describes the mod as being about using nature's gifts to make rituals, and says you'll find these items everywhere.[2]
Where the quest book puts it
The Roots Classic quest is in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star", in the "Main Questline" group. That is chapter 7 of 66 in the book. You hand in a Verdant Sprig for it. Other mod intro quests in the same chapter include "Forbidden & Arcanus" quest, "Productive Bees" quest, "Occultism" quest and "Twilight Forest" quest.[2]
The next step is the quest a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star", which comes after the Roots Classic quest and asks for a Crystal Staff. Its text walks you through a ritual. You build a Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern JEI shows, set up Incense Braziers, light them, then Shift Right Click the altar to start. If it fails, the quest says to check the Standing Stones pattern.[2]
Since these quests sit in the ATM Star chapter, the pack's quest book does put Roots Classic on that path. The rest of the chapter is told in the quest book itself.[2]
Roots Classic in the tools chapter
The "Basic Tools" chapter is in the "Tools and Gear" group, chapter 12 of 66 in the book. It lists three Roots Classic tools, each after the "Basic Tools!" quest. The Living Sword is listed at 6 attack damage, as an alternative to a sword from another mod. The Living Pickaxe is listed at Tier 3, also as an alternative to another mod's pickaxe. The Engraved Blade is listed at 12 attack damage. The chapter says the pickaxe and sword quests are optional.[3]
How do you get started with Roots Classic?
6 parts
Roots Classic is about using nature's gifts to run rituals. The pack's quest book says it may look small in JEI but has a lot to it. Here is the order I'd go in, with the exact in-pack recipes.[2]
Get a Bark Knife
Start with the Bark Knife. You use it on a log to peel off bark, and that bark goes into magic rituals. Oak Bark, Birch Bark and Acacia Bark all show up in the ritual recipes below, so you want the knife first.[4][5]

Mortar and Pestle
The Mortar is used with the Pestle to create spells. The pestle also appears in recipes such as Growth Powder and Healing Poultice, so it is worth having from the start.[4][5]
Build your ritual setup
The Casting Altar is the centre piece for casting rituals. Around it you place standing stones. The Mundane Standing Stone is the basic ritual stone, and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one. Each Incense Brazier holds incense to burn during rituals.[4]

Your first ritual: living tools
The Living Sword, Living Pickaxe and Living Axe are self-repairing tools made through a magic ritual. The pack changed all three ritual recipes from the mod's versions, so trust the blocks below rather than older guides.[4][5]

The Crystal Staff
In the quest book, the "Roots Classic" quest quest sits in Chapter 3: The ATM Star, in the Main Questline group. Its task is to obtain a Verdant Sprig. The next quest after it, a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star", asks for the Crystal Staff.[2]
That quest tells you to lay out the Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI, then place 4 Incense Braziers around the altar. You light them all with a Flint and Steel and Shift Right Click the Altar to start the ritual. If nothing happens, check your stone pattern first.[2]

How does Roots Classic work?
5 parts
Roots Classic works through rituals and crafting rather than machines. The mod's own text describes a Runic Tablet guidebook, a Casting Altar that serves as the centerpiece of casting rituals, standing stones that form ritual patterns, and Spell Powder for spells. This section covers those systems as the sources document them.[4]
Start with the Runic Tablet
The Runic Tablet is the in-game guidebook for the mod, and it explains all the spells and rituals. Almost every altar, stone and component description in the mod's own text says "see Runic Tablet", so the exact ritual layouts live there. Craft it first.[4]

Other standing stones come from crafting rituals defined in the Runic Tablet. Each one gives an effect around it:[4]
- Accelerating Standing Stone: a speed beacon.[4]
- Entangling Standing Stone: a slowness beacon.[4]
- Growing Standing Stone: a growth booster for your plants.[4]
- Healing Standing Stone: a regeneration beacon.[4]
- Igniting Standing Stone: burns your enemies.[4]
- Repulsing Standing Stone: repulses nearby stuff.[4]
- Vacuum Standing Stone: vacuums in nearby stuff.[4]
There is also a plain Standing Stone that is only for decoration. Most of the effect stones have a lower half in their block state, and their loot tables only drop the item when the lower half is broken.[4][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]
The Runic Focus and the Charged Runic Focus store energy for Roots rituals.[4]
Spell Powder and staffs
Spells start as Spell Powder, which the mod describes as a combination of ingredients that makes up a spell. The Mortar is used with the Pestle to create spells. The pack stores the powder recipes as component recipes, one for each key ingredient. Some use the mod's own berries or the Flare Orchid and Midnight Bloom plants, which the mod calls advanced spell components.[4][5]
One of the component recipes that makes Spell Powder.
The pack changes several of these component recipes from the mod's defaults, including azure bluet, blue orchid, midnight bloom and oxeye daisy. They are shown below as the pack has them, so don't trust older guides for these.[5]

- Berries: breaking some leaves by hand may occasionally give you a random berry. There are five kinds, nightshade, Blackcurrant, Redcurrant, Whitecurrant and Elderberry, each with different properties.[4][22]
- Old Root: a basic spell component that drops from tall grass.[4]

How do you progress through Roots Classic?
6 parts
Roots Classic is all about using nature's gifts to make rituals. In this pack, almost everything past the basics is a ritual recipe, and the pack has changed many of them. Here is the order I'd follow: set up the altar, craft your first nature tools, then move on to armor, runic focuses and standing stones.[2][5]
Where it sits in the quest book
The "Roots Classic" quest quest lives in Chapter 3: The ATM Star, in the Main Questline group (chapter 7 of 66 in the book). Its task is to get a Verdant Sprig. Right after it comes the a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" quest for the Crystal Staff. The rest of that chapter is told in the quest book.[2]
Step 1: The ritual setup
Rituals happen at the Casting Altar, surrounded by standing stones in the pattern JEI shows you. The Crystal Staff quest also has you place 4 Incense Brazier blocks around the altar, light them with flint and steel, then Shift Right Click the altar to start the ritual. If nothing happens, the quest says to check your standing stone pattern first.[2][5]

Step 2: Living tools

In the Basic Tools chapter (group Tools and Gear), the Living Pickaxe is placed at Tier 3, the same tier as an iron pickaxe, and Tier 3 mines most ores like diamond, emerald and gold. The Living Sword is listed at 6 attack damage, the same as an iron sword.[3]
Step 3: Armor
There are two armor sets, and the pack changed the ritual recipes for both: Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots, plus Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots.[5]
Ritual (rootsclassic)
Golden Apple

Step 4: Runic focuses and the Engraved Blade
The Runic Focus and Charged Runic Focus are both ritual recipes changed by the pack. The Engraved Blade ritual is the mod's own recipe. The Basic Tools chapter lists the blade at 12 attack damage, which beats a netherite sword at 8.[3][5]

The special standing stones are ritual recipes too. In this pack the Healing Standing Stone and Igniting Standing Stone are changed. The Accelerating Standing Stone, Standing Stone, Entangling Standing Stone, Growing Standing Stone, Repulsing Standing Stone and Vacuum Standing Stone use the mod's own recipes.[5]

The pack also changes these Spell Powder component recipes: azure bluet, blue orchid, midnight bloom, oxeye daisy, radiant daisy and rose bush.[5]
How does Roots Classic work with other mods?
2 parts
The cross-mod links I can confirm for Roots Classic in this pack come from one pack-added recipe and a few quests in the tools chapter of the quest book.[3][5]
Pulsating Black Hole recipe
The Crystal Staff is one of the ingredients in this pack's recipe for the Pulsating Black Hole. The recipe is a KubeJS shaped recipe added by the pack, not by Roots Classic. The other ingredients come from several different mods, and the recipe below shows the exact in-pack layout.[5]

Quest book: Basic Tools
Roots Classic tools show up in the "Basic Tools" chapter, which sits in the "Tools and Gear" group (chapter 12 of 66 in the book). The chapter compares tools from many mods, with swords sorted by base damage. The quests for all the pickaxes and swords are optional, and each one comes after "Basic Tools!" quest.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Tools" is the 6 Attack Damage sword quest. Its task accepts either the Living Sword or the Infused Iron Sword from Nature's Aura.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Tools" is a Tier: 3 pickaxe quest. It accepts the Living Pickaxe or the Infused Iron Pickaxe from Nature's Aura. Its text says the Botanist's Pickaxe turns blocks it interacts with into their mossy variants, assuming they have one.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Tools" is the 12 Attack Damage quest for the Engraved Blade.[3]
25 of the 76 quests in this chapter are not covered by the sources here, so check the quest book for those.[3]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Roots Classic?
3 parts
Roots Classic shows up in three chapters of the quest book: the main ATM Star chapter and two gear chapters, Basic Armor and Basic Tools. Here is what each one asks for.[2][3][23]
Chapter 3: The ATM Star
This is chapter 7 of 66 in the Main Questline group. The entry quest is "Roots Classic" quest, which asks you to hand in a Verdant Sprig. Its text says Roots is all about using nature's gifts to make rituals.[2]
Right after it comes a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star", which asks for a Crystal Staff. You make it with a ritual. Place the Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI, put 4 incense braziers around the altar and light them with a Flint and Steel, then Shift Right Click the altar to start. If it doesn't work, check the Standing Stones pattern first.[2]
This is not a side quest. The Crystal Staff quest is one of the quests listed before "Pulsating Black Hole" quest, and that quest is in turn listed before "ATM Star" quest.[2]
Basic Armor
Basic Armor is chapter 11 of 66 in the Tools and Gear group, and it has 127 quests. The Roots Classic quests shown to me are for armor sets, and each asks for every piece of the set:[23]
- "Sylvan Gear" quest wants Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots. The quest calls it basic armor from Roots Classic and says you need a ritual to get it.[23]
- "Wildwood Gear" quest wants Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots. The quest calls it late game armor for Roots Classic.[23]
The quest text for the other 117 quests in this chapter isn't included here. Open the chapter in the quest book to read them.[23]
Basic Tools
Basic Tools is chapter 12 of 66, also in the Tools and Gear group, with 76 quests. It starts from "Basic Tools!" quest, and every tool quest below is listed after it. The chapter says the pickaxe and sword quests are all optional. They show where each tool sits among the others, with swords sorted by base damage.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Tools" is tagged 6 Attack Damage. It accepts either the Living Sword or an infused iron sword from another mod.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Tools" is tagged Tier: 3. It accepts either the Living Pickaxe or an infused iron pickaxe from another mod. Its note describes a pickaxe that turns blocks it touches into their mossy variants, if they have one.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Tools" is tagged 12 Attack Damage and asks for the Engraved Blade.[3]
What changed in Roots Classic between versions?
Roots Classic has been in All the Mods 10 since version 0.56 or earlier, and the pack has bumped it a few times since. Here are the updates the pack changelogs record, newest first.[1]
- All the Mods 10 8.2: updated from 1.21.1-1.5.7 to 1.21.1-1.5.10. This is the version the pack ships now (RootsClassic-1.21.1-1.5.10.jar).[1][24]
- All the Mods 10 6.5: updated from 1.21.1-1.5.6 to 1.21.1-1.5.7.[25]
- All the Mods 10 5.2: updated from 1.21.1-1.5.5 to 1.21.1-1.5.6.[26]
If you're updating an older world, you'll see these as plain version bumps of the mod. The pack changelogs don't say whether any of them changed recipes, balance or config values.[24][25][26]
Unverified What changed inside Roots Classic itself between these versions (new content, fixes or balance changes) is unverified, because no changelogs for the shipped jars are stored.
