What is Roots Classic?
1 part
Roots Classic is part of this pack, running version 1.21.1-1.5.5. It's been in the pack since version 1.4 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the lineup.[1]
Unverified What Roots Classic actually does in play, and what kind of player it's aimed at, isn't covered by the material for this page. This overview sticks to where the mod shows up in this pack's quest book.
Where it fits in the quests
You'll run into Roots Classic early, in the basic tools chapter of the quest book. Its quests there all unlock after the same earlier quest, so you can take them on in any order once you reach that point.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for a Living Sword, but it also accepts an alternative sword from another mod.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for a Living Pickaxe, and it also accepts an alternative pickaxe from another mod.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for an Engraved Blade.[2]
The basic armor chapter has 2 quests for full sets. a quest in "?" wants the Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots. a quest in "?" wants the Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots.[3]
The mod also appears in another quest chapter. First you grab a Verdant Sprig for a quest in "?", and that unlocks a quest in "?", which asks for a Crystal Staff.[4]
How do you get started with Roots Classic?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Roots Classic might look tiny in JEI, but there's a lot packed into it. The whole mod is about using nature's gifts to perform rituals, and you'll find the ingredients all over the place once you start looking. In All the Mods 10, your entry point is the a quest in "?" quest in the ATM Star chapter, which asks you to pick up a Verdant Sprig.[5]
Unverified The sources don't say how to get a Verdant Sprig in this pack, so check JEI to see where it comes from. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Grab the Runic Tablet
Make the Runic Tablet before anything else. It's the mod's guidebook and explains every spell and ritual, and almost every Roots item tooltip points you to it. Keep an eye out for Old Root while you explore. It's a basic spell component that drops from tall grass.[6]

Make a Bark Knife
Plenty of rituals use bark, and you get it with the Bark Knife. Right-click a log block with the knife to peel bark off it. Each use has a chance of breaking the log, so bring some spare wood. You'll collect different kinds of bark, such as Oak Bark, Birch Bark and Acacia Bark.[6]

Build your ritual setup
Rituals are cast from the Casting Altar, which is the centerpiece of every ritual. You place standing stones in a pattern around it. The Mundane Standing Stone is the basic ritual stone and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one, and the Runic Tablet shows which pattern each ritual needs. You'll also need some Incense Brazier blocks, which hold the incense you burn during rituals.[6]

Your first ritual: the Crystal Staff
The quest after Roots Classic is a quest in "?", where you craft the Crystal Staff with a ritual. The pack changed this ritual, so follow the in-pack recipe below instead of older guides. The quest walks you through it like this:[5][7]
- Place the Casting Altar and the Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI.[5]
- Put the altar ingredients into the Casting Altar.[5]
- Place 4 Incense Braziers around the altar and put one incense ingredient in each.[5]
- Light all the braziers with Flint and Steel.[5]
- Shift-right-click the altar to start the ritual.[5]

Living tools and Sylvan armor
Once your altar works, the same setup gets you some great early gear. The Living Pickaxe and Living Sword are self-repairing tools made by ritual, and they count for the Basic Tools quests a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". The pack changed both of these rituals.[6][7][8]

How does Roots Classic work?
7 parts
Roots Classic is a magic mod built around rituals, spell powders and staffs. Nothing in it runs on power, fluids or item pipes as far as the sources show. Instead you work with a Casting Altar, standing stones and mana. Your guide to all of it in game is the Runic Tablet, which the mod describes as the guidebook that explains all spells and rituals.[6]

Rituals: altar, brazier and standing stones
The Casting Altar is the centre piece for casting rituals. The Incense Brazier holds incense to burn during rituals. Standing stones are used to build the ritual patterns shown in the Runic Tablet. The Mundane Standing Stone is the basic ritual stone, and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one.[6]

Ritual crafting uses its own recipe type, rootsclassic:ritual, rather than a normal crafting grid. The exact pattern for each ritual is told in the Runic Tablet, so I won't guess at layouts here.[6][10]
Standing stones with effects
Several standing stones do something once you have made them through a crafting ritual. The mod's own descriptions are:[6]
- Accelerating Standing Stone: a speed beacon.[6]
- Entangling Standing Stone: a slowness beacon.[6]
- Growing Standing Stone: a growth booster for your plants.[6]
- Healing Standing Stone: a regeneration beacon.[6]
- Igniting Standing Stone: burns your enemies.[6]
- Repulsing Standing Stone: repulses nearby stuff.[6]
- Vacuum Standing Stone: vacuums nearby stuff.[6]

Pack-changed ritual recipes
The Runic Focus and Charged Runic Focus store energy for Roots rituals. This pack changes the ritual recipe for the Charged Runic Focus, and also the one for the Crystal Staff, so check these two against any other guide you read.[6][10]

Spell powder and staffs
Spells start at the Mortar and Pestle, which are used together to create spells. The result is Spell Powder, a combination of ingredients that makes up a spell. These recipes use the rootsclassic:component type, and each one makes Spell Powder from a different set of ingredients.[6][10]
The pack changes at least two of the component recipes, the azure bluet one and the blue orchid one. The other component recipes in the dump are marked as the mod's own.[10]

To turn Spell Powder into a magic staff, you use it on the Imbuer. The Imbuer is described as creating any magical staff from Spell Powder.[6]
Staff and mana settings
This pack leaves all of these values at the mod defaults. Here is what each one controls, as the config describes it:[11]
- magic.staffUses is 65, the number of uses an unmodified staff has when crafted.[11]
- magic.staffUsesBasic is 15, the number of basic uses for one spell staff.[11]
- magic.staffUsesEfficiency is 15, the number of uses added by each efficiency level on a spell.[11]
- magic.efficiencyBonusUses is 32, the number of additional uses each efficiency modifier gives.[11]
- magic.staffChargeTicks is 20, the number of ticks needed to prepare a spell with a staff.[11]
- magic.ticksPerManaRegen is 15, the number of ticks between each mana regeneration (20 ticks = 1 second).[11]
- magic.disablePVP is false, so damaging spells can affect players.[11]
Gathering ritual materials
Bark comes from logs. Right-click a log with a Bark Knife to harvest it, with a chance of breaking the log block. In the config, items.barkKnifeBlockStripChance is 0.3, and a value of 1 would strip the log on the first harvest. Barks such as Birch Bark, Acacia Bark and Jungle Bark turn up in ritual recipes.[6][10][11]
Other components drop from the world. Each chance below is 1 in the number shown, and all are the mod defaults:[11]
- Berries drop from oak leaves at 1 in 25 (items.berriesDropChance).[11]
- Dragon's Eyes drop from chorus flowers at 1 in 10 (items.dragonsEyeDropChance).[11]
- Infernal Bulb drops from nether wart at 1 in 20 (items.infernalStemDropChance).[11]
- Old Root drops from tall grass at 1 in 40 (items.oldRootDropChance).[11]
- Verdant Sprig drops from grown crops at 1 in 30 (items.verdantSprigDropChance).[11]
Growth Powder
Growth Powder grows grass on dirt. Right-click to throw it at a block within 4 blocks of you, and it grows grass in a small area. The recipe makes four at a time.[6][10]

Unverified The sources do not explain how far standing stone effects reach, how strong they are, or whether anything in this mod can be automated with hoppers or pipes.
How do you progress through Roots Classic?
6 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Roots Classic might look small in JEI, but there's a lot to it! The whole mod is about using nature's gifts to perform rituals. In this pack, your starting point is the a quest in "?" quest in Chapter 3: The ATM Star, which asks you to grab a Verdant Sprig. The quest promises you'll find these items everywhere.[5]
Building your ritual setup
Nearly everything in Roots Classic comes from rituals, so first you need the hardware. The Casting Altar, the Incense Brazier, the Mundane Standing Stone and the Attuned Standing Stone are all normal crafting table recipes.[7]

How does Roots Classic work with other mods?
2 parts
Roots Classic doesn't connect to a huge web of other mods in this pack, but where it does, it matters. Your Crystal Staff ends up in one of the pack's big multi-mod crafts, and several Roots tools and armor pieces show up in the questbook's general gear chapters.[2][3][4][10]
The Crystal Staff and the Pulsating Black Hole
The biggest integration is a recipe the pack adds itself. The Pulsating Black Hole takes a Crystal Staff as one of its ingredients. The rest of the recipe pulls in items from a whole list of other mods, so your Roots Classic progress feeds straight into a pack-wide crafting goal.[10]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: allthemods:pressure/allthetweaks/pulsating_black_hole
Recipe added by the pack; the Crystal Staff is the Roots Classic ingredient.
Here are the other items that sit in that same recipe next to the staff, so you can see which mods you'll need to dip into:[10]
- ME Quantum Ring[10]
- Lightning Bomb[10]
- Explosive Mycelial Generator[10]
- Fire Upgrade Orb[10]
- Paradox Machine[10]
- Stable Wormhole[10]
- Micromissiles[10]
- Pocket Storage Unit Tier: 4[10]
The questbook has its own path to that staff. In the chapter_2_the_star chapter, a quest in "?" asks for a Verdant Sprig, and once that's done a quest in "?" asks for the Crystal Staff.[4]
Roots gear in the shared quest chapters
In the basic_tools chapter, Roots Classic tools count toward quests alongside another mod's gear. a quest in "?" accepts either the Living Sword or an infused iron sword from another mod, and a quest in "?" works the same way with the Living Pickaxe or an infused iron pickaxe. So pick whichever magic path you like. The same chapter also has a quest in "?" just for the Engraved Blade.[2]
The basic_armor chapter has two full Roots Classic armor sets. a quest in "?" asks for the Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots. a quest in "?" asks for the Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots.[3]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Roots Classic?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Roots Classic shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. They mostly ask you to craft its gear, from tools and armor to its magic staff. None of the quests have titles, so here's what each one actually asks for.[12][13][14]
Basic tools chapter
The basic_tools chapter has three Roots Classic quests. All three unlock after the same earlier quest in that chapter, so once that one is done you can tackle them in any order you like.[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for a Living Sword. It also accepts an alternative sword from another mod, so you don't have to go the Roots route if you'd rather not.[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for a Living Pickaxe. Like the sword quest, it accepts an alternative pickaxe from another mod too.[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for an Engraved Blade, and only that item counts.[12]
Basic armor chapter
The basic_armor chapter has two Roots Classic quests, one for each full armor set. Each quest has four item tasks, one for every armor piece. No prerequisites are listed for either quest.[13]
- a quest in "?" wants the full Sylvan set: Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots.[13]
- a quest in "?" wants the full Wildwood set: Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots.[13]
The chapter_2_the_star chapter
The chapter_2_the_star chapter has a short two-step chain, and this one does have a set order.[14]
- First, a quest in "?" asks you to get a Verdant Sprig.[14]
- Once that's done, a quest in "?" unlocks and asks for a Crystal Staff.[14]
Unverified The quest files don't say which of these three chapters you should do first, what rewards the quests give, or which quest unlocks the tools chapter entries.
Which Roots Classic config options matter?
3 parts
Roots Classic splits its settings across two files: a client file for the HUD and GUI, and a common file for drop rates and spellcasting. The good news is that this pack leaves every value that has a listed mod default at that default, so anything you read below is also what the mod ships with, no surprise rebalancing to learn.[11][15]
Client: mana bar and tablet
- client.manaBarOffset is set to 49, the mod default, and can go from 0 to 32,767. It's the number of pixels above the bottom of the screen where the mana bar renders, so if another mod's bar is sitting on top of it, raising this by 10 usually moves it clear.[15]
- client.showTabletWave is true in this pack, which keeps the wave effect in the Runic Tablet GUI. Turn it off if you'd rather have a still background.[15]
Ingredient drop chances
Most of your early Roots Classic materials come from breaking ordinary blocks, and each one is a 1-in-N roll you can tune. Lower numbers mean more drops. The pack uses the mod defaults across the board.[11]
- items.berriesDropChance is 25, berries drop from oak leaves with a 1/25 chance.[11]
- items.verdantSprigDropChance is 30, for verdant sprigs from grown crops.[11]
- items.oldRootDropChance is 40, for old roots from tall grass: the rarest of the overworld drops.[11]
- items.infernalStemDropChance is 20, for infernal bulbs from nether wart.[11]
- items.dragonsEyeDropChance is 10, for dragon's eyes from chorus flowers: the most generous rate of the set.[11]
- items.barkKnifeBlockStripChance is 0.3, the chance the bark knife strips the log; set it to 1 and it always strips on the first harvest. The allowed range is 0.1 to 1.0.[11]
Spellcasting and staffs
- magic.staffUses is 65: the number of uses an unmodified staff has when you craft it.[11]
- magic.efficiencyBonusUses is 32 additional uses per efficiency modifier.[11]
- magic.staffUsesBasic is 15 basic uses for one spell staff, and magic.staffUsesEfficiency adds another 15 per efficiency level on a spell. Both are capped at 100.[11]
- magic.staffChargeTicks is 20 ticks to prepare a spell with a staff.[11]
- magic.ticksPerManaRegen is 15, meaning one mana regeneration tick every 15 ticks: 20 ticks is one second, so lowering it speeds your mana back up.[11]
