What is Roots Classic?

1 part

Roots Classic is part of All the Mods 10 4.5, which runs version 1.21.1-1.5.5 of the mod. It has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.25 or earlier, so it's been around for a good while.[1]

Unverified This guide couldn't confirm what the mod's core mechanics are or who it's mainly aimed at, because no mod description or in-game guidebook was available to check.

Where it shows up in the quests

The quest book shows you where Roots Classic fits in this pack. Its tools and armor show up in the basic tools and basic armor chapters, and two more of its items appear in the chapter_2_the_star chapter.[2][3][4]

Tip: The quests for the Living Sword and Living Pickaxe also accept a matching tool from another mod. If you're not using Roots Classic for your early tools, you can still tick those quests off.[2]

How do you get started with Roots Classic?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Roots Classic might look tiny in JEI, but there's a lot packed into it. The whole mod is about using nature's gifts to perform rituals, and you'll find the ingredients all over the place once you start looking. In All the Mods 10, your entry point is the a quest in "?" quest in the ATM Star chapter, which asks you to pick up a Verdant Sprig.[5]

Unverified The sources don't say how to get a Verdant Sprig in this pack, so check JEI to see where it comes from. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Grab the Runic Tablet

Make the Runic Tablet before anything else. It's the mod's guidebook and explains every spell and ritual, and almost every Roots item tooltip points you to it. Keep an eye out for Old Root while you explore. It's a basic spell component that drops from tall grass.[6]

Make a Bark Knife

Plenty of rituals use bark, and you get it with the Bark Knife. Right-click a log block with the knife to peel bark off it. Each use has a chance of breaking the log, so bring some spare wood. You'll collect different kinds of bark, such as Oak Bark, Birch Bark and Acacia Bark.[6]

Build your ritual setup

Rituals are cast from the Casting Altar, which is the centerpiece of every ritual. You place standing stones in a pattern around it. The Mundane Standing Stone is the basic ritual stone and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one, and the Runic Tablet shows which pattern each ritual needs. You'll also need some Incense Brazier blocks, which hold the incense you burn during rituals.[6]

Your first ritual: the Crystal Staff

The quest after Roots Classic is a quest in "?", where you craft the Crystal Staff with a ritual. The pack changed this ritual, so follow the in-pack recipe below instead of older guides. The quest walks you through it like this:[5][7]

  1. Place the Casting Altar and the Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI.[5]
  2. Put the altar ingredients into the Casting Altar.[5]
  3. Place 4 Incense Braziers around the altar and put one incense ingredient in each.[5]
  4. Light all the braziers with Flint and Steel.[5]
  5. Shift-right-click the altar to start the ritual.[5]

Watch out: If the ritual doesn't start, check your standing stone pattern first. The quest text also mentions Verdant Bark, but the in-pack ritual uses Verdant Sprig, so go by the recipe.[5][7]

Living tools and Sylvan armor

Once your altar works, the same setup gets you some great early gear. The Living Pickaxe and Living Sword are self-repairing tools made by ritual, and they count for the Basic Tools quests a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". The pack changed both of these rituals.[6][7][8]

How does Roots Classic work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Roots Classic is a nature magic mod, and nearly everything in it points back to one book: the Runic Tablet. It's the mod's guidebook, and it explains all the spells and rituals. The tooltips for almost every block and item tell you to check it for the details, so craft it early and keep it handy.[6]

The mod has two big systems. You grind ingredients into Spell Powder to make spells, and you build rituals around an altar using standing stones and incense.[6]

Gathering magical materials

Trees matter a lot in this mod. The Bark Knife peels bark off logs for use in recipes and rituals. Right-click a log block to harvest its bark, but be aware that each harvest has a chance of breaking the log.[6]

When you break leaves by hand, you'll sometimes get a random berry. There are five kinds, each with different properties, and some are used in spells or rituals. Different berries can heal you, clear potion effects or poison you when eaten, so check the tooltip before you snack.[6]

  • Old Root drops at a 1/40 chance when you break tall grass. You need it for a lot of early magic, because it's required for spells without modifiers. You can also eat it for a tiny bit of hunger.[6]
  • Verdant Sprig drops at a 1/30 chance when you harvest fully-grown crops of any kind. Its uses usually relate to bringing life to things.[6]
  • Infernal Bulbs drop at a 1/20 chance from grown nether wart. They're useful when a spell needs a lot of energy. They also work as furnace fuel and can be given to skeletons to make them withered.[6]
  • Dragon's Eyes drop at a 1/10 chance from chorus flowers. Besides their spell uses, you can eat them for a stronger chorus fruit effect or smelt one into an ender pearl.[6]
  • Flare Orchid and Midnight Bloom are advanced spell components.[6]

Making spells: Mortar, Pestle and Spell Powder

Spells start at the Mortar. You use it together with the Pestle to combine ingredients into Spell Powder, and that combination is what defines the spell.[6]

Rituals give you some of the mod's best rewards:[6]

  • Living tools: an axe, hoe, pickaxe, shovel and sword that repair themselves.[6]
  • Sylvan and Wildwood armor sets.[6]
  • Functional standing stones that work like beacons: speed (Accelerator), slowness (Entangler), plant growth (Grower), regeneration (Healer), burning enemies (Igniter), pushing things away (Repulsor) and pulling nearby stuff in (Vacuum).[6]
  • Animal summoning: give the ritual the flesh and bones of a passive mob and it brings that mob back to life on top of the altar.[6]

The Crystal Staff

The crystal staff fixes the limited uses of a regular staff. It stores spells indefinitely and can hold up to four at a time. Loading spells onto it takes a separate ritual. On top of that ritual's normal components, you can add up to four more Spell Powders as incense, and each one is added to the staff, overwriting older spells if needed. Sneak and right-click to cycle through the stored spells.[6]

Watch out: Stand on natural blocks like dirt, grass, leaves or logs when you use the crystal staff. If you cast from anywhere else, the staff draws on your own life force to cast.[6]

Powders

Growth Powder grows grass on dirt. Right-click to throw it at a block within 4 blocks of you, and grass grows in a small area there.[6]

Crafting Shapeless

Mutating Powder is made with the power of a nether star and mutates flora into new kinds. You only use it in very specific situations, which the Runic Tablet lists in its spell components section.[6]

Unverified Exact ritual layouts, how many standing stones or incenses each ritual needs, how Runic Foci get charged, and whether any of this can be automated with pipes or other mods' machines aren't covered by the available sources. Check the in-game Runic Tablet for these details.

How do you progress through Roots Classic?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Roots Classic might look small in JEI, but there's a lot to it! The whole mod is about using nature's gifts to perform rituals. In this pack, your starting point is the a quest in "?" quest in Chapter 3: The ATM Star, which asks you to grab a Verdant Sprig. The quest promises you'll find these items everywhere.[5]

Building your ritual setup

Nearly everything in Roots Classic comes from rituals, so first you need the hardware. The Casting Altar, the Incense Brazier, the Mundane Standing Stone and the Attuned Standing Stone are all normal crafting table recipes.[7]

  1. Place the Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI.[5]
  2. Put the ritual's altar items into the Casting Altar.[5]
  3. Place 4 Incense Braziers around the Altar and put one of the remaining ritual items in each.[5]

Armor: Sylvan, then Wildwood

In the Basic Armor chapter, the a quest in "?" quest describes Sylvan armor as the basic armor added by Roots Classic, and you'll need a ritual to get it. The quest asks for the full set: Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots.[9]

Each Sylvan piece has its own ritual recipe, and the pack has changed every one of them.[7]

How does Roots Classic work with other mods?

3 parts

Roots Classic doesn't have many recipe crossovers in this pack, but the one it has is a big one. The rest of its connections come through the questbook, where Roots Classic gear sits alongside other mods' progression.[2][3][4][10]

The Crystal Staff and the Pulsating Black Hole

The pack adds its own shaped crafting recipe for the Pulsating Black Hole, and your Roots Classic Crystal Staff is one of the ingredients. It is the only Roots Classic item in that recipe. The other ingredients come from a whole spread of other mods, so you'll need progress in several of them before you can craft it.[10]

Pack-added recipe that uses the Crystal Staff

The questbook points you toward that staff too. In the "chapter_2_the_star" chapter, quest a quest in "?" asks for a Verdant Sprig. Once you finish it, quest a quest in "?" asks for the Crystal Staff itself.[4]

Tip: The Pulsating Black Hole recipe uses the Crystal Staff up, so if you want to keep one for yourself, craft a second staff.[10]

Tools in the basic_tools chapter

Roots Classic tools also show up in the "basic_tools" quest chapter, and all three of these quests unlock after the same earlier quest. Two of them let you choose between a Roots Classic tool and one from another mod, so you can go with whichever magic mod you're already playing.[2]

Armor in the basic_armor chapter

The "basic_armor" chapter puts both Roots Classic armor sets next to the other armor options in the pack, with one quest for each full set.[3]

Unverified The quest data doesn't show what the Pulsating Black Hole is used for afterwards, or what rewards these quests give.

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Roots Classic?

3 parts

Roots Classic shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. They mostly ask you to craft its gear, from tools and armor to its magic staff. None of the quests have titles, so here's what each one actually asks for.[2][3][4]

Basic tools chapter

The basic_tools chapter has three Roots Classic quests. All three unlock after the same earlier quest in that chapter, so once that one is done you can tackle them in any order you like.[2]

Basic armor chapter

The basic_armor chapter has two Roots Classic quests, one for each full armor set. Each quest has four item tasks, one for every armor piece. No prerequisites are listed for either quest.[3]

The chapter_2_the_star chapter

The chapter_2_the_star chapter has a short two-step chain, and this one does have a set order.[4]

  1. First, a quest in "?" asks you to get a Verdant Sprig.[4]
  2. Once that's done, a quest in "?" unlocks and asks for a Crystal Staff.[4]

Unverified The quest files don't say which of these three chapters you should do first, what rewards the quests give, or which quest unlocks the tools chapter entries.
