What is Roots Classic?

2 parts

Roots Classic is a nature magic mod built around rituals. All the Mods 10 8.1 includes it as version 1.21.1-1.5.7, and it has been in the pack since at least All the Mods 10 2.25.[1]

Don't let its small footprint in JEI fool you. The pack's own quest promises there's a lot more to it than it looks. The core idea is using nature's gifts to perform rituals, so if you enjoy setting up altars and watching magic happen, this one's for you. Your starting point is the Verdant Sprig, which the quest says you'll find all over the place.[2]

Where it fits in the pack

Roots Classic is part of the ATM Star path. It has its own quest, "Roots Classic" quest, in Chapter 3: The ATM Star. That quest asks for a Verdant Sprig, and the next one, a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star", asks for a Crystal Staff.[2]

The Crystal Staff is made with a ritual. You set up a Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI, put the items into the altar, and surround it with lit Incense Blaziers. Then you shift right-click the altar to start the ritual.[2]

Tip: If your ritual doesn't start, the quest's advice is to double-check the pattern your Standing Stones are placed in.[2]

Gear along the way

Unverified The sources show the Crystal Staff quest in the ATM Star chapter. They don't show exactly how the staff is used further along the ATM Star crafting chain.

How do you get started with Roots Classic?

5 parts

Roots Classic might look tiny in JEI, but there's a lot packed into it. The whole mod is about using nature's gifts to perform rituals, and you'll find the ingredients all over the place once you start looking. In All the Mods 10, your entry point is the "Roots Classic" quest quest in the ATM Star chapter, which asks you to pick up a Verdant Sprig.[2]

Unverified The sources don't say how to get a Verdant Sprig in this pack, so check JEI to see where it comes from. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Grab the Runic Tablet

Make the Runic Tablet before anything else. It's the mod's guidebook and explains every spell and ritual, and almost every Roots item tooltip points you to it. Keep an eye out for Old Root while you explore. It's a basic spell component that drops from tall grass.[5]

Make a Bark Knife

Plenty of rituals use bark, and you get it with the Bark Knife. Right-click a log block with the knife to peel bark off it. Each use has a chance of breaking the log, so bring some spare wood. You'll collect different kinds of bark, such as Oak Bark, Birch Bark and Acacia Bark.[5]

Build your ritual setup

Rituals are cast from the Casting Altar, which is the centerpiece of every ritual. You place standing stones in a pattern around it. The Mundane Standing Stone is the basic ritual stone and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one, and the Runic Tablet shows which pattern each ritual needs. You'll also need some Incense Brazier blocks, which hold the incense you burn during rituals.[5]

Your first ritual: the Crystal Staff

The quest after Roots Classic is a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star", where you craft the Crystal Staff with a ritual. The pack changed this ritual, so follow the in-pack recipe below instead of older guides. The quest walks you through it like this:[2][6]

  1. Place the Casting Altar and the Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI.[2]
  2. Put the altar ingredients into the Casting Altar.[2]
  3. Place 4 Incense Braziers around the altar and put one incense ingredient in each.[2]
  4. Light all the braziers with Flint and Steel.[2]
  5. Shift-right-click the altar to start the ritual.[2]

Watch out: If the ritual doesn't start, check your standing stone pattern first. The quest text also mentions Verdant Bark, but the in-pack ritual uses Verdant Sprig, so go by the recipe.[2][6]

Living tools and Sylvan armor

Once your altar works, the same setup gets you some great early gear. The Living Pickaxe and Living Sword are self-repairing tools made by ritual, and they count for the Basic Tools quests a quest in "Basic Tools" and a quest in "Basic Tools". The pack changed both of these rituals.[3][5][6]

How does Roots Classic work?

5 parts

Roots Classic is a nature magic mod, and nearly everything in it points back to one book: the Runic Tablet. It's the mod's guidebook, and it explains all the spells and rituals. The tooltips for almost every block and item tell you to check it for the details, so craft it early and keep it handy.[5]

The mod has two big systems. You grind ingredients into Spell Powder to make spells, and you build rituals around an altar using standing stones and incense.[5]

Gathering magical materials

Trees matter a lot in this mod. The Bark Knife peels bark off logs for use in recipes and rituals. Right-click a log block to harvest its bark, but be aware that each harvest has a chance of breaking the log.[5]

When you break leaves by hand, you'll sometimes get a random berry. There are five kinds, each with different properties, and some are used in spells or rituals. Different berries can heal you, clear potion effects or poison you when eaten, so check the tooltip before you snack.[5]

  • Old Root drops at a 1/40 chance when you break tall grass. You need it for a lot of early magic, because it's required for spells without modifiers. You can also eat it for a tiny bit of hunger.[5]
  • Verdant Sprig drops at a 1/30 chance when you harvest fully-grown crops of any kind. Its uses usually relate to bringing life to things.[5]
  • Infernal Bulbs drop at a 1/20 chance from grown nether wart. They're useful when a spell needs a lot of energy. They also work as furnace fuel and can be given to skeletons to make them withered.[5]
  • Dragon's Eyes drop at a 1/10 chance from chorus flowers. Besides their spell uses, you can eat them for a stronger chorus fruit effect or smelt one into an ender pearl.[5]
  • Flare Orchid and Midnight Bloom are advanced spell components.[5]

Making spells: Mortar, Pestle and Spell Powder

Spells start at the Mortar. You use it together with the Pestle to combine ingredients into Spell Powder, and that combination is what defines the spell.[5]

Rituals give you some of the mod's best rewards:[5]

  • Living tools: an axe, hoe, pickaxe, shovel and sword that repair themselves.[5]
  • Sylvan and Wildwood armor sets.[5]
  • Functional standing stones that work like beacons: speed (Accelerator), slowness (Entangler), plant growth (Grower), regeneration (Healer), burning enemies (Igniter), pushing things away (Repulsor) and pulling nearby stuff in (Vacuum).[5]
  • Animal summoning: give the ritual the flesh and bones of a passive mob and it brings that mob back to life on top of the altar.[5]

The Crystal Staff

The crystal staff fixes the limited uses of a regular staff. It stores spells indefinitely and can hold up to four at a time. Loading spells onto it takes a separate ritual. On top of that ritual's normal components, you can add up to four more Spell Powders as incense, and each one is added to the staff, overwriting older spells if needed. Sneak and right-click to cycle through the stored spells.[5]

Watch out: Stand on natural blocks like dirt, grass, leaves or logs when you use the crystal staff. If you cast from anywhere else, the staff draws on your own life force to cast.[5]

Powders

Growth Powder grows grass on dirt. Right-click to throw it at a block within 4 blocks of you, and grass grows in a small area there.[5]

Mutating Powder is made with the power of a nether star and mutates flora into new kinds. You only use it in very specific situations, which the Runic Tablet lists in its spell components section.[5]

Unverified Exact ritual layouts, how many standing stones or incenses each ritual needs, how Runic Foci get charged, and whether any of this can be automated with pipes or other mods' machines aren't covered by the available sources. Check the in-game Runic Tablet for these details.

How do you progress through Roots Classic?

6 parts

Roots Classic might look small in JEI, but there's a lot to it! The whole mod is about using nature's gifts to perform rituals. In this pack, your starting point is the "Roots Classic" quest quest in Chapter 3: The ATM Star, which asks you to grab a Verdant Sprig. The quest promises you'll find these items everywhere.[2]

Building your ritual setup

Nearly everything in Roots Classic comes from rituals, so first you need the hardware. The Casting Altar, the Incense Brazier, the Mundane Standing Stone and the Attuned Standing Stone are all normal crafting table recipes.[6]

Your first ritual: the Crystal Staff

The quest a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" unlocks after the Roots Classic quest. It walks you through your first ritual, which makes the Crystal Staff. The pack has changed this ritual recipe, so go by the in-pack version shown below.[2][6]

  1. Place the Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI.[2]
  2. Put the ritual's altar items into the Casting Altar.[2]
  3. Place 4 Incense Braziers around the Altar and put one of the remaining ritual items in each.[2]
  4. Light all the braziers with Flint and Steel.[2]
  5. Shift Right Click the Altar to start the ritual.[2]

Living tools

The Basic Tools chapter includes a quest for the Living Sword, labelled 6 Attack Damage (a quest in "Basic Tools"), and one for the Living Pickaxe, labelled Tier: 3 (a quest in "Basic Tools").[3]

Every living tool is a ritual recipe, and the pack has changed all of them. Besides the sword and pickaxe, you can make the Living Axe, Living Shovel and Living Hoe.[6]

Armor: Sylvan, then Wildwood

In the Basic Armor chapter, the "Sylvan Gear" quest quest describes Sylvan armor as the basic armor added by Roots Classic, and you'll need a ritual to get it. The quest asks for the full set: Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots.[4]

Each Sylvan piece has its own ritual recipe, and the pack has changed every one of them.[6]

How does Roots Classic work with other mods?

2 parts

Roots Classic is a fairly self-contained nature magic mod, but in All the Mods 10 it does tie into the rest of the pack in a few places. The biggest link is an endgame crafting recipe the pack adds itself. The other links come from quest chapters that group Roots gear alongside gear from other mods.[3][4][6]

The Crystal Staff and the Pulsating Black Hole

The pack adds a custom recipe for the Pulsating Black Hole. That recipe takes a Crystal Staff together with parts from a whole bunch of other mods: the ME Quantum Ring, Lightning Bomb, Explosive Mycelial Generator, Paradox Machine, Stable Wormhole, Manhattan Module, Micromissiles and Pocket Storage Unit Tier: 4. So even if you aren't planning to go deep into Roots, you'll want to make at least one Crystal Staff for this recipe.[6]

Pack-added recipe that uses the Crystal Staff

The Crystal Staff also has its own quest in the Chapter 3: The ATM Star questline, right after the "Roots Classic" quest intro quest. That quest walks you through the ritual that makes the staff: you set up the Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI, load the altar and the Incense Blaziers, light them, then Shift Right Click the altar. If the ritual fails, check the Standing Stones pattern first.[2]

Tip: The quest a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" spells out exactly what goes in the altar and in each Incense Blazier, so keep it open while you build your ritual setup.[2]

Shared tool and armor quests

In the Basic Tools chapter, some quests accept a Roots item or an item from another mod. For a quest in "Basic Tools" (Tier: 3), you can hand in either the Living Pickaxe or Botanist's Pickaxe. For a quest in "Basic Tools" (6 Attack Damage), you can hand in either the Living Sword or Botanist's Blade. The Engraved Blade has its own quest in the same chapter, a quest in "Basic Tools", listed at 12 Attack Damage.[3]

Roots armor also appears in the pack's Basic Armor chapter. The "Sylvan Gear" quest quest asks for the Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots, and it notes that you'll need a ritual to get this set. The "Wildwood Gear" quest quest covers the late game set: the Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots.[4]

Unverified Whether the Pulsating Black Hole is itself used later in the ATM Star crafting chain is not confirmed by the available sources.

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Roots Classic?

3 parts

Roots Classic appears in three quest chapters in All the Mods 10 8.1. Its main line is in Chapter 3: The ATM Star, and its weapons, tools and armor also show up in the Basic Tools and Basic Armor chapters.[2][3][4]

Chapter 3: The ATM Star

This is the mod's starting point. The quest "Roots Classic" quest only asks you for a Verdant Sprig. The quest text says that Roots is all about using nature's gifts to make rituals, and that you'll find its items everywhere, so this one should come quickly.[2]

After that, a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" asks for a Crystal Staff, and this is where you do your first ritual. The quest text lists exactly which items go into the altar and into each brazier, so keep it open while you build.[2]

  1. Place the Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI.[2]
  2. Put the three items listed in the quest text into the Altar.[2]
  3. Place 4 Incense Blaziers around the Altar and put one of the items listed in the quest into each of them.[2]
  4. Light all the braziers with a Flint and Steel.[2]
  5. Shift Right Click the Altar to start the ritual.[2]
Tip: If the ritual doesn't start, the quest's own advice is to check the pattern your Standing Stones are in.[2]

Basic Tools

Three Roots Classic quests sit in the Basic Tools chapter. All three unlock after the chapter's Basic Tools! quest.[3]

Basic Armor

The Basic Armor chapter has two full armor sets from the mod. "Sylvan Gear" quest asks for all four pieces: the Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots. Its text calls this the mod's basic armor and warns that you'll need a ritual to get it.[4]

"Wildwood Gear" quest is described as late game armor for Roots Classic. It asks for the Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots.[4]

Unverified The quest files don't show any links between these three chapters, so the order to do them in isn't confirmed. Learning rituals in Chapter 3 first seems sensible, since the Sylvan Gear quest says its armor needs a ritual.

What changed in Roots Classic between versions?

1 part

Roots Classic has been part of All the Mods 10 for a long time: it was first included in version 2.25 or earlier. In All the Mods 10 8.1 you're running Roots Classic 1.21.1-1.5.7, shipped as the file RootsClassic-1.21.1-1.5.7.jar.[1]

Updates across pack releases

  • All the Mods 10 5.2 updated Roots Classic from 1.21.1-1.5.5 to 1.21.1-1.5.6.[7]
  • All the Mods 10 6.5 updated Roots Classic from 1.21.1-1.5.6 to 1.21.1-1.5.7, which is the version still included in 8.1.[1][8]

Unverified The pack changelogs only record the version bumps, and no mod changelogs are available for these jars, so what actually changed in each Roots Classic update (bug fixes, balance tweaks or new content) can't be confirmed here.
