What is Just Dire Things?

3 parts

Just Dire Things is a progression mod that adds new resources, plus tools, armor, wands and machines built from them. Many of the machines are aimed at automation. All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 1.5.5, and the mod has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[1][2][3]

The goo system

Everything starts with goo. You place a goo block, activate it by feeding it the item it asks for, then put an eligible block next to it. The goo transforms that block into a new resource. After each transformation there's a 10% chance the goo needs feeding again. Higher tiers can do everything lower tiers can, and they're much faster.[4]

  • Primogel Goo is the first tier, made from simple Overworld materials. It turns Iron into Ferricore.[5]
  • Blazebloom Goo carries the essence of the Nether and turns Gold into Blazegold.[6]
  • VoidShimmer Goo draws on the energies of the End and turns Diamonds into Celestigem.[7]
  • Shadowpulse Goo is the top tier. It turns Netherite into Eclipse Alloy.[8]

Gear and upgrades

Each resource tier has its own set of armor and tools, and both can take upgrades. You install upgrades in a smithing table. Upgrade templates such as Template: Blazegold move your gear to the next tier and keep the upgrades you've already installed.[9][10]

The higher tiers run on Forge Energy. Each Celestigem armor piece stores 10,000 FE and each Eclipse Alloy piece stores 500,000 FE. You can keep them charged on the go with a Pocket Generator.[11][12][13]

Where it fits in this pack

The mod has its own quest chapter. It opens with crafting Primogel Goo in a quest in "?", which leads to Ferricore in a quest in "?". Ferricore unlocks the first tools, armor and simple machines, such as the Simple Block Breaker and Simple Clicker.[14]

From there, Blazebloom Goo in a quest in "?" opens up Blazegold in a quest in "?". The chapter then continues through VoidShimmer Goo in a quest in "?" and Shadowpulse Goo in a quest in "?".[14]

How do you get started with Just Dire Things?

3 parts

Almost everything in this mod starts with goo. Goo blocks transform certain blocks placed next to them into new materials, and each tier unlocks the next resource. Your first goal is to get your first goo block running.[4][15]

Step 1: Primogel Goo

Your first craft is Primogel Goo, the first tier of goo. It's made from simple Overworld materials and turns Iron into Ferricore. In the pack's quest book this is a quest in "?", and the rest of the chapter branches off from it.[5][14]

  1. Craft the goo block and place it in your world.[4]
  2. Activate it by feeding it the resource it consumes. The goo block itself shows you which item that is.[4]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo, and the transformation starts.[4]
Watch out: After each transformation there's a 10% chance the goo goes inactive and needs to be fed again. Inactive goo won't start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes. Check on your goo now and then.[4]

Unverified The provided sources don't include the Primogel Goo recipe or say exactly which form of iron it converts, so check both in JEI. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Step 2: Ferricore

Getting Raw Ferricore and a Ferricore Ingot completes a quest in "?". That quest unlocks a big part of the chapter: Ferricore tools and armor, the simple machines, the Pocket Generator, the Fuel Canister and the Ferricore Wrench. Primal Coal also opens up right after your first goo.[14]

Ferricore armor is a small step up from iron, and it can take upgrades. Upgrades are installed by putting your tool or armor and the upgrade item in a smithing table. Shift while hovering a tool's tooltip to see which upgrades it supports. Press 'v' by default to turn a tool on or off.[16][17][18]

The simple machines don't need power. They work on the block or entity directly in front of them, and you can set how fast they run. The pack changed the recipes for the Simple Block Breaker and Simple Block Placer, so use the recipes shown below rather than older guides.[19][20]

Tip: The Fuel Canister stores fuel such as coal or wood, but not lava buckets. It feeds furnaces and generators, so you never waste a whole piece of coal smelting one ore. You can't get items back out of it, though.[21]

Step 3: Blazebloom Goo and Blazegold

Next up is Blazebloom Goo (a quest in "?"), which turns Gold into Blazegold. Higher-tier goo can also do everything lower tiers can, and it's much faster. Smelt or blast the Raw Blazegold you get into Blazegold Ingot.[4][6][14][20]

Hold on to your Ferricore gear. With a Template: Blazegold you can upgrade it to Blazegold in a smithing table, and your installed upgrades carry over. Some upgrades also scale with tier: the Hammer upgrade mines a 3x3 area in a Blazegold Pickaxe. Blazegold armor can be fully repaired by dropping it into a lava source block.[18][20][22][23]

How does Just Dire Things work?

10 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.15 guide

Just Dire Things is built around automation. Almost every machine comes in a simple and an advanced version, and once you understand how those two behave, the rest of the mod falls into place. Here is how the systems work in this pack.[2][19]

Simple vs. advanced machines

Simple machines don't need power, but they generally only affect the block or entity directly in front of them. You control how fast they run with the Speed(ticks) button. Advanced machines are much more powerful but need power. They can cover a large, configurable area and have filters. They also automatically charge any Forge Energy items you place inside them.[19]

On simple machines, the redstone button decides when the machine runs: ignored (the default, so it always runs), low (only when it is not receiving a signal), high (only when it is receiving one), or pulse (one operation per pulse). For a simple machine a pulse usually means one action, like breaking one block, while an advanced machine may do everything in its area.[25]

Speed(ticks) defaults to 20, which is once per second. You can drop it as low as 1, so the machine runs every tick, but that can contribute to lag, so only do it when you really need to. The pack's general.minimum_machine_tick_speed is set to 1, which is why that lowest setting is available.[25][26]

Area and filters

Advanced machines have a Render area button that shows in-world what the block will affect. The RAD button changes the radius, and the OFF button moves the center of the area with an offset. Turn on Render area while you test them.[27]

Most advanced machines also have a row of filter slots for items, blocks or entities. You can drag from JEI into them or click a slot with a stack in your hand. To filter entities, use a spawn egg or a Creature Catcher. An allow/deny toggle switches between affecting only the listed things and affecting everything except them. Compare NBT makes the filter stricter, for example matching enchantments, or the color of a sheep captured in a Creature Catcher.[27]

Core automation machines

  • Simple Block Breaker: breaks the block in front of it with a tool and can't work without one. It damages the tool or consumes power per block, just as it would for a player. The Advanced Block Breaker covers a bigger area and can filter by block or by item drop. It also has a direction button, which matters for tools with a hammer-like ability.[28][29]
  • Simple Block Placer: places the block it holds into the space in front of it, and a direction button sets which way. The Advanced Block Placer uses its filters to choose which blocks it may place on, and the filter respects the direction setting.[30][31]
  • Simple Swapper: swaps blocks and/or entities between itself and a paired partner. Place two, then right-click the first and the second with a Ferricore Wrench to bind them. Block entities like chests swap fine. The Advanced Swapper adds area of effect and filtering. When two are bound, the radius setting copies to the partner.[32][33][34]
  • Simple Clicker: simulates a right click, left click or hold click, using the item in its slot (or nothing, for buttons). A target button picks what it clicks on, such as blocks, air, hostile, passive, adult, child, player or all living. The Advanced Clicker adds a larger area and filters, and the guide suggests it for mob farms or animal breeding.[35][36]
  • Simple Dropper: drops items in the direction you set, one at a time by default. You can raise the stack size up to 64 per drop, and it drops as many as it has if there are fewer. The pickup delay defaults to 0. The Advanced Dropper can't change radius but does have an offset, and its filter slots set which items drop and in what order.[37][38]
  • Simple Sensor: detects blocks or entities in its area and emits a redstone signal when its conditions are met. You can pick a strong or weak signal and filter on a block state. The Advanced Sensor can count matches with a greater-than or less-than setting, for example sensing fewer than 10 adult cows to enable a clicker that feeds them.[39][40]
  • Item Collector: works like an advanced machine even though it uses Tier 1 resources. It vacuums item entities in its area into the inventory it is attached to, with a filter and an adjustable pickup speed.[41]

Power generation

The Simple Coal Generator burns any furnace fuel, but specialized coals (Primal Coal, Blaze Ember, Voidflame Coal and Eclipse Ember) raise both the FE per tick and the total FE. In this pack the generator's buffer is 1,000,000 FE and its output is 1,000 FE per tick. It makes 15 FE per burn tick of fuel and burns fuel 4 times faster than normal.[26][43]

The Simple Fuel Generator uses refined fuels instead, in 3 tiers. In this pack its buffer is 5,000,000 FE and its output is 5,000 FE per tick. Per mb of fuel it makes 450 FE for tier 2 (Blaze Ember), 1,300 for tier 3 (Voidflame) and 4,000 for tier 4 (Eclipse Ember).[26][44]

The Pocket Generator is the portable option. Open it, add coal or this mod's upgraded coals, and it keeps energy-dependent tools and armor charged. Higher tier fuels give more FE per tick, and it also accepts the Fuel Canister. Armor needs this: Celestigem armor holds 10,000 FE per piece and Eclipse Alloy armor holds 500,000 FE.[11][12][13]

Fuel Canister

The Fuel Canister stores fuel such as coal or wood, but not lava buckets. Put it in furnaces and generators and they draw fuel from it, so you don't burn a whole piece of coal to smelt one ore. There is no way to get the fuel back out. Fuel from this mod also passes on its fuel multiplier, which is averaged with what is already inside, and the tooltip shows the multiplier you will get.[21]

In this pack the canister holds up to 10,000,000 ticks of fuel, and each furnace operation consumes at least 200 ticks. Lower is more efficient.[26]

Wireless power

The Energy Transmitter fills its internal buffer from a connected generator. You then set its area of effect, and any block inside that can receive Forge Energy gets filled from the buffer. Filter slots let you pick which machines receive power. Transmitters inside each other's area balance each other with no loss. Normal wireless transfer does lose a little energy, as a balance measure.[45]

In this pack the transmitter stores 1,000,000, sends up to 1,000 per tick to machines and other transmitters, and loses 1 percent per block of distance. These are set by energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_max_rf, energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_rf_per_tick and energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_loss_per_block.[26]

Fluids and inventories

  • Fluid Canister: holds up to 8 buckets. Right-click places or picks up liquid like a bucket. Shift right-click sets auto-fill of other containers in your inventory to none, this mod's items only, or all, including other mods.[46]
  • Simple Fluid Collector: grabs any fluid in front of it into its buffer, which holds 1 fluid at a time. Its item slot can fill a bucket or canister. The advanced version covers a larger area, and a bucket in its filter slots picks the fluids it collects.[47][48]
  • Simple Fluid Placer: places fluid when it has more than 1,000mb and nothing is in front of it. The advanced version covers a larger area, and its filters choose which blocks it places fluid on.[26][49][50]
  • Experience Holder: stores your experience and can convert it to XP Fluid at 20mb per experience point. Pipes and Laserio can move that fluid, and the block keeps its XP when broken. It can also top players up to a target level and collect XP orbs in its area.[51]
  • Inventory Holder: acts like a chest with a player-style inventory. Control-click an item to save it as a filter for that slot. Filtered Items Only and Compare Stack Sizes also apply to pipes and hoppers, and extraction ignores filtered slots.[52]
  • Player Accessor: lets hoppers or pipes insert into and extract from a player's inventory, and the UI lets you assign each side to different slots, such as armor or the offhand.[53]

Goo

Goo converts blocks placed next to it into new resources. Craft a goo block, place it, feed it the resource it consumes (the block tells you which), then put an eligible block beside it. Higher tier goo can do everything lower tiers can, and is much faster. The tiers are Primogel (iron to Ferricore), Blazebloom (gold to Blazegold), VoidShimmer (diamond to Celestigem) and Shadowpulse (netherite to Eclipse Alloy).[4][5][6][7][8]

After a transformation there is a chance the goo needs reactivating with another item. While inactive it can't start new transformations, though anything already in progress finishes. The pack keeps this on with goo.goo_can_die and a goo.goo_death_chance of 0.1, which is 10%.[4][26]

Time and the Paradox

The Time Wand speeds up ticking blocks like furnaces and crops. The first click makes the block run twice as fast, and each click after that doubles it again, to 4x, then 8x. It needs both Forge Energy and Time Fluid, and each speed-up lasts 30 seconds.[54]

The Paradox Machine takes a snapshot of an area: raw ore blocks and entities like zombies and cows. After you clear the area, activating it restores them using a lot of power and Time Fluid. A button switches between entities only, blocks only, or both. Restored entities may not be exactly identical to the originals.[55]

Overuse builds up Paradox Energy, shown in the UI. In this pack the machine holds 100 before it spawns a Paradox, gains 0.25 per restored block or entity, and holds up to 16,000 Time Fluid. A Paradox absorbs blocks, items and entities in its area for good, and grows faster the more it eats. The only known fix is throwing in a Time Crystal to seal it.[26][55][56]

Watch out: Don't spam the Paradox Machine. Anything a Paradox consumes can't be recovered.[56]

How do you progress through Just Dire Things?

7 parts

Just Dire Things is built around four tiers of resources, and goo unlocks every one of them. Goo is a block that transforms certain blocks placed next to it into new materials. Each higher tier of goo can convert stronger blocks, so the mod works as a ladder you climb one goo at a time.[4][5][6][7][8]

The four goo tiers

How to run goo

  1. Craft a goo block and place it in the world.[4]
  2. Activate the goo by feeding it the resource it consumes. The goo block shows you which resource that is.[4]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo to start the transformation.[4]
Tip: After each transformation, there is a 10% chance the goo needs to be fed again. Inactive goo won't start new transformations, but any process already running still finishes. Higher tier goo can do everything a lower tier can, and it is much faster, so upgrade your goo setup as you go.[4]

Following the quest chapter

The pack has its own Just Dire Things quest chapter that follows this ladder. It starts with a quest in "?", which asks for Primogel Goo. That quest opens three branches: a quest in "?" for Ferricore, a quest in "?" for Primal Coal, and a quest in "?" for Blazebloom Goo.[14]

Blazebloom Goo leads to a quest in "?" for Blazegold and to a quest in "?" for VoidShimmer Goo. VoidShimmer Goo opens a quest in "?" for Celestigem and a quest in "?" for Shadowpulse Goo. Shadowpulse Goo then unlocks a quest in "?" for Eclipse Alloy.[14]

What each tier unlocks

Simple machines don't need power, but they generally only affect the block or entity directly in front of them. Advanced machines need power. In return, they can affect a large area that you configure in the UI, and they have filters.[19]

Watch out: This pack changed the recipes for both the simple and advanced versions of the Block Breaker, Block Placer, Clicker, Dropper and Swapper. Use the in-pack recipes shown here and in JEI rather than older guides.[20]

Upgrading gear between tiers

Each resource tier has its own set of tools and armor. You can craft a piece directly, or you can use an upgrade template in a smithing table to move a piece up to the next tier. The template route keeps any upgrades you've already installed, so it's the way to go once your gear has abilities on it.[10][18][20]

The chapter has a quest for each template: a quest in "?" for Template: Ferricore, a quest in "?" for Template: Blazegold, a quest in "?" for Template: Celestigem and a quest in "?" for Template: Eclipse Alloy.[14]

Fuel tiers

In the quest chapter, the coal line climbs alongside the goo. The Primal Coal quest comes after Primogel Goo. The Blaze Ember quest follows the Blazebloom Goo and Primal Coal quests. The Voidflame Coal quest follows VoidShimmer Goo and Blaze Ember. The Eclipse Ember quest follows Shadowpulse Goo and Voidflame Coal.[14]

The refined fuel quests follow the same order: Blaze Ember Fuel Bucket, then Voidflame Fuel Bucket, then Eclipse Ember Fuel Bucket. The first of these also comes after the Polymorphic Fluid Bucket quest.[14]

How does Just Dire Things work with other mods?

4 parts

Just Dire Things doesn't just sit in its own corner of this pack. Several recipes the pack added pull its items and fluids into endgame crafting chains from other mods. If you're building up your Just Dire Things setup, some of that effort pays off elsewhere too.[20]

Endgame crafting ingredients

The pack added a shaped recipe for Philosopher's Fuel that needs Refined T4 Fluid Source. It sits alongside items from a whole spread of other mods, like Create, Generator Galore, Iron Furnaces, Modern Industrialization and Mystical Agriculture. So your top-tier Just Dire Things fuel production feeds straight into this pack-made item.[20]

Pack-added recipe

The Paradox Machine is also an ingredient in the pack's Pulsating Black Hole recipe. It's crafted together with items like the ME Quantum Ring, Stable Wormhole and Manhattan Module.[20]

Pack-added recipe

Industrial Foregoing Souls

Two Dissolution Chamber recipes that the pack added use Unstable Portal Fluid Source. One makes the Soul Laser Base and the other makes Soul Surge. If you want to get into Industrial Foregoing Souls, you'll need that Just Dire Things fluid on hand.[20]

Experience fluid for custom machines

This is probably the biggest connection. Xp Fluid Source is consumed by a large number of Modular Machinery Reborn machine recipes that the pack added. Their recipe ids point to a Runic Enchanter and an auto Hephaestus Forge.[20]

  • The Runic Enchanter recipes pair the experience fluid with the pack's enchanting bases, Lapis Lazuli and a range of vanilla items.[20]
  • Other Runic Enchanter recipes use Mystical Agriculture essences, or Apothic Enchanting items such as the Tome of Scrapping, Deepshelf and Hellshelf.[20]
  • The auto Hephaestus Forge recipes combine the experience fluid with items like Blood, Deorum Ingot, modular_machinery_reborn:modularium and Allthemodium ingots.[20]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Just Dire Things?

5 parts

Just Dire Things has its own quest chapter in this pack. Its items also appear in several other chapters: basic tools, basic armor, basic power, building tips, Forbidden Arcanus and chapter_2_the_star. Quests in this pack are untitled, so each one is identified below by the item it asks for.[14][57][58][59][60][61][62]

The dedicated chapter: goo and materials

Everything starts with a quest in "?", which asks for Primogel Goo. Each goo tier then unlocks the next goo and a new material to work with.[14]

  1. After the Primogel Goo quest, a quest in "?" asks for Raw Ferricore and Ferricore Ingot. a quest in "?" asks for Blazebloom Goo.[14]
  2. The Blazebloom Goo quest unlocks a quest in "?" for Raw Blazegold and Blazegold Ingot. It also unlocks a quest in "?" for VoidShimmer Goo.[14]
  3. The VoidShimmer Goo quest unlocks a quest in "?" for Celestigem and a quest in "?" for Shadowpulse Goo.[14]
  4. The Shadowpulse Goo quest unlocks a quest in "?" for Raw Eclipse Alloy and Eclipse Alloy Ingot.[14]

What each material unlocks

Fuels and fluids

The coal line runs from a quest in "?" (Primal Coal) through a quest in "?" (Blaze Ember) and a quest in "?" (Voidflame Coal) to a quest in "?" (Eclipse Ember). Each coal quest also needs the matching goo quest done first.[14]

a quest in "?" asks for a Polymorphic Fluid Bucket, and a quest in "?" for a Portal Fluid Bucket follows it. The Polymorphic Fluid Bucket quest and the Blaze Ember quest together unlock the refined fuel buckets. Those run from a quest in "?" through a quest in "?" to a quest in "?".[14]

Upgrades and templates

The chapter has a quest for almost every upgrade, from Upgrade: Flight to Upgrade: Treefeller. There are also quests for the four smithing templates, starting with a quest in "?" for Template: Ferricore. The Ore Scanner quest, a quest in "?", also has a checkmark task.[14]

Unverified The upgrade and template quests depend on two prerequisite quests that are not described in the available quest data, so what unlocks them is unconfirmed.

Other chapters

Tip: Some quests let Just Dire Things items stand in for other mods' gear. a quest in "?" in basic power accepts a Simple Coal Generator, and a quest in "?" in basic tools accepts a Ferricore Pickaxe. In chapter_2_the_star, a quest in "?" accepts a Creature Catcher.[58][59][62]

Which Just Dire Things config options matter?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.15 guide

Just Dire Things has one common config file, and this pack ships it both in the config folder and in the default configs folder. Almost everything matches between the two. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, with the values this pack uses.[26][63]

Machine tick speed

general.minimum_machine_tick_speed is the slowest tick rate a machine can be set to. The option's own description says it defaults to 1, meaning every tick, and the live config file in this pack has 1.[26]

Watch out: The pack's default-configs copy, general.minimum_machine_tick_speed, is set to 20 instead of 1. The two files disagree, and the sources don't say which one wins on your install. Check the value in your own config folder if machine speed matters to you.[26][63]

Tool abilities

Every ability toggle under the abilities section is true except one. abilities.orescanner is false, so the ore scanner ability is switched off in this pack.[26][63]

Abilities such as ore miner and tree feller are capped per tool tier, and each cap can range from 1 to 2,048 blocks. This pack sets four caps:[26][63]

Power generation

The basic generator burns fuel 4 times faster (generator_t1.generator_t1_burn_speed_multiplier). It makes 15 FE per burn tick of fuel, outputs 1,000 FE per tick and holds 1,000,000 FE in its buffer.[26][63]

The fluid generator outputs 5,000 FE per tick (generator_fluid_t1.generator_fluid_t1_fe_per_tick) and holds 5,000,000 FE. Its fuel tiers give 450 FE per mB for Blaze Ember, 1,300 for Voidflame and 4,000 for Eclipse Ember.[26][63]

The pocket generator also has a burn speed multiplier of 4 and 15 FE per fuel tick. It charges other items at 5,000 FE per tick (pocket_generator.pocket_gen_fe_per_tick) and holds 1,000,000 FE.[26][63]

The tier 1 energy transmitter stores up to 1,000,000 RF and moves up to 1,000 RF per tick. It loses 1 percent of the energy per block of distance (energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_loss_per_block).[26][63]

Time Wand

The Time Wand tops out at a 128x speed multiplier (time_wand.time_wand_max_multiplier). It holds 100,000 FE, and each use costs 750 FE, scaled by the acceleration amount. The Time Fluid cost is 0.5, scaled the same way. Fake players, like the ones clickers use, are not allowed to use it.[26][63]

Paradox Machine

Restoring one block or one entity costs 250,000 FE and 50 mB of Time Fluid, multiplied by how many you restore. The machine holds 10,000,000 FE and 16,000 mB of fluid.[26][63]

Each restored block or entity adds 0.25 Paradox Energy, and the machine spawns a Paradox once it hits 100. paradox_machine.paradox_restricted_mobs is false here. The option's description says that leaves a small chance of item dupe bugs with cloned mobs, and recommends adding any problem mobs to the machine's deny entity tag instead.[26][63]

Portal Gun and goo

The Portal Gun V1 holds 100,000 FE and costs 1,000 FE per shot. The V2 holds 1,000,000 FE and costs 5,000 FE per shot.[26][63]

Goo can die when it finishes crafting (goo.goo_can_die is true). The chance is 0.1, or 10 percent, which matches the default stated in the option's description. A dead goo block needs reviving by right-clicking it with an item.[26][63]

Unverified The files don't list the mod's stock values for most of these options, so apart from the tick speed and the goo death chance, I can't tell you which ones the pack changed.

What changed in Just Dire Things between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Just Dire Things 1.5.5. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, so it's a long-time resident.[1]

Updates in the pack changelogs

Here are the Just Dire Things version bumps recorded in the pack changelogs, newest first:[64][65][66][67]

  • All the Mods 10 2.42: updated from 1.5.4 to 1.5.5, the version still in the pack today.[1][64]
  • All the Mods 10 2.33: updated from 1.5.3 to 1.5.4.[65]
  • All the Mods 10 2.28: updated from 1.5.2 to 1.5.3.[66]
  • All the Mods 10 2.26: updated from 1.5.1 to 1.5.2.[67]

Unverified The pack changelogs only record the version numbers, and no changelogs are stored for the shipped jars. What actually changed in each Just Dire Things update (new items, fixes, balance tweaks) isn't confirmed here, so check the mod's own release notes before assuming anything about a particular version.
