What is Iron Furnaces?
2 parts
Iron Furnaces takes its inspiration from cpw's Iron Chests mod and gives you a whole ladder of furnace tiers, each one smelting faster than the last. All the Mods 10 8.1 ships version 4.3.2, so that's the version this guide covers.[1][2]
These furnaces do a lot more than cook faster. You can configure each side for piping items in and out, switch on auto-input and auto-output, and set redstone control. The Furnace Settings Linker copies all of those settings from one furnace to others.[1][3]
Augments change what a furnace does. Augment: Smoking and Augment: Blasting turn it into a faster smoker or blast furnace. Augment: Factory makes it run on energy, and Augment: Generator turns fuel into energy. Augment: Speed trades extra fuel for speed, and Augment: Fuel Efficiency cuts fuel use in half.[1][3]
You can also skip solid fuel entirely. The Wireless Heat Transmitter sends energy to a Wireless Heat Receiver placed in a furnace's fuel slot.[3]
Where it fits in the pack
The quests for this mod are in the Generators N Furnaces chapter, and they open right after the vanilla furnace quest. For comparison, a normal furnace takes 200 ticks per item, and 20 ticks equals 1 second. Here's how the first tiers stack up:[3]
- Copper Furnace: 180 ticks per item, and a great use for spare copper.[3]
- Iron Furnace: 160 ticks (8 seconds). You craft it from either a normal furnace or a Copper Furnace. Start with "Iron Furnace" quest.[3]
- Silver Furnace: 140 ticks (7 seconds). You craft it from a Copper or Iron Furnace.[3]
- Golden Furnace: 120 ticks. You craft it from a Silver or Iron Furnace.[3]
- Diamond Furnace: 80 ticks (4 seconds), which the quest book points out is even faster than a Blast Furnace. Unlock it with "Diamond Furnace" quest, and the ladder carries on from there toward the Emerald Furnace.[3]
The ATM Star connection
This mod stays relevant all the way to the endgame. In Chapter 3: The ATM Star, the "2 &zRainbow Furnaces" quest quest asks for 2 Rainbow Furnace, which smelt a whole stack of items at a time. You need 2 of them for the Improbable Probability Device. Building one takes a Rainbow Core, which uses 2 Netherite Furnaces, plus Rainbow Plating, which uses almost every other furnace in the mod. That means every tier you climb pays off later.[4]
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
4 parts
Your first Iron Furnaces goal in All the Mods 10 comes early. The "Furnace Upgrades!" quest quest in Chapter 1 asks you to upgrade your plain furnace once you have your first metals. It accepts an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, or one of the matching upgrade items. These furnaces can take augments that speed them up or change what they do, and their configurable sides make automation much easier.[5]
Step 1: Copper or Iron Furnace
Speed is the reason to bother. A normal furnace takes 200 ticks to smelt one item, and 20 ticks equal 1 second. A Copper Furnace takes 180 ticks. An Iron Furnace takes 160 ticks, which is 8 seconds.[3]
Copper is one of the most common ores, so the Copper Furnace is a cheap first step. This pack has changed its recipe, so check the version below rather than one you remember from elsewhere.[3][6]

Unverified Whether upgrading a placed furnace keeps the items and fuel already inside it isn't confirmed here, so empty it first to be safe.
Step 2: Set up your sides
The configuration panel is on the left of the furnace screen. There you set inputs, outputs and redstone activation. The top buttons turn automatic input and output to connected inventories on or off. Each side can be set to input, output, both, fuel input, or nothing, which matters as soon as you start piping items in and out.[3][5]
Once you have one furnace set up the way you like, the Furnace Settings Linker copies all of those settings to your other furnaces. It's also the task for the "Configurations" quest quest.[3]
Step 3: Your first augments
Right after Furnace Upgrades comes the "Furnace Augments" quest quest, which accepts any augment. To install one, right-click it into the furnace.[5][7]
- Augment: Speed halves the cook time for all recipes but uses twice the fuel.[7]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, so one coal smelts 16 items instead of 8, at the cost of slower smelting.[3][7]
- Augment: Blasting only allows blasting recipes, but it smelts ores twice as fast and stacks with other augments and furnace tiers.[3][7]
- Augment: Smoking only allows smoking recipes and cooks food twice as fast.[3][7]

From here the tiers keep going. A Copper Furnace can become a Silver Furnace or an Iron Furnace. An Iron Furnace can become a Silver or a Golden Furnace. Silver smelts in 140 ticks (7 seconds) and Gold in 120 ticks. Both Silver Furnace recipes have been changed by the pack.[3][6]

How does Iron Furnaces work?
7 parts
Every furnace in Iron Furnaces works like a vanilla furnace at heart: fuel in, items in, smelted items out. What changes between them is how fast they cook, which energy tier they belong to, and how much power they can make. On top of that, augments let you turn a furnace into a blaster, smoker, generator or powered factory. Here's how all of it works in All the Mods 10.[1][7][8]
Speed, tiers and generation
Each furnace has a speed value: the number of ticks it takes to finish one smelting operation. For comparison, a regular vanilla furnace takes 200 ticks, so lower numbers mean faster smelting. Each furnace also has a generation value (how much RF per tick it makes when used as a generator) and a tier from 0 to 2.[8]
- Copper Furnace: 180 ticks per operation, 40 RF/tick, tier 0.[8]
- Iron Furnace: 160 ticks per operation, 40 RF/tick, tier 0.[8]
- Silver Furnace: 140 ticks per operation, 100 RF/tick, tier 1.[8]
- Golden Furnace: 120 ticks per operation, 160 RF/tick, tier 1.[8]
- Diamond Furnace: 80 ticks per operation, 240 RF/tick, tier 2 in this pack (the mod default is tier 1).[8]
- Emerald Furnace: 40 ticks per operation, 320 RF/tick, tier 2 in this pack (the mod default is tier 1).[8]
- Crystal Furnace: 40 ticks per operation, 360 RF/tick, tier 2.[8]
- Obsidian Furnace: 20 ticks per operation, 500 RF/tick, tier 2.[8]
- Netherite Furnace: 5 ticks per operation, 1,000 RF/tick, tier 2.[8]
- Rainbow Furnace: 20 ticks per operation, 2,000 RF/tick, tier 2.[8]
- Allthemodium Furnace: 5 ticks per operation, 2,000 RF/tick, tier 2, and it smelts 16 items at once.[8]
- Unobtainium Furnace: 5,000 RF/tick and it smelts 64 items at once.[8]
That multi-item smelting is what makes the Allthemodium-line furnaces special: a regular furnace only smelts one item per operation, while these process a whole batch at the same time.[8]
Unverified The speed and tier of the Unobtainium Furnace, and all stats of the Vibranium Furnace, were not in the provided config excerpt, so they aren't listed here.
The tier decides how much energy a furnace can store. In this pack, tier 0 furnaces hold 80,000, tier 1 furnaces hold 200,000 and tier 2 furnaces hold 1,000,000. Because All the Mods 10 bumps the Diamond and Emerald Furnaces up to tier 2, they get the big 1,000,000 buffer instead of the tier 1 one.[8]
Augments
Augments are how you specialise a furnace. You right-click a furnace with an augment to insert it. Most of them come with a clear trade-off, so pick the one that fits the job.[7]
- Augment: Speed halves the cook time for all recipes, but uses up twice the amount of fuel.[7]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, but slows the cook time by 25% for all recipes.[7]
- Augment: Blasting makes the furnace only allow blasting recipes.[7]
- Augment: Smoking makes the furnace only allow smoking recipes.[7]
- Augment: Generator turns the furnace's heat into power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items.[7]
- Augment: Factory converts the furnace into a factory, which uses power for heat instead of fuel.[7]

Power generation and the Rainbow Furnace
Once a furnace has the Generator augment, it burns fuel to make RF at its generation rate from the list above, storing it in its internal buffer based on its tier. That means a higher-tier furnace isn't just a faster smelter, it's a much stronger generator too.[7][8]
The Rainbow Furnace has a special generator mode on top of that. For it to generate, one of each tier of furnace must be an active generator and not have a full buffer. In this pack its special power value is set to 50,000, and its tooltip describes that as RF/tick if all other furnaces are generating power.[7][8]

Wireless heat
If you'd rather run your furnaces on power than fuel, the wireless heat system has you covered. You feed Forge Energy into a Wireless Heat Transmitter, and it powers every Wireless Heat Receiver that is bound to it.[7]
- Place a Wireless Heat Transmitter and supply it with Forge Energy.[7]
- Bind a Wireless Heat Receiver by placing the receiver inside the transmitter. An unbound receiver tells you it has yet to be bound to an energy source.[7]
- Put the bound receiver in the fuel slot of your furnace.[7]

Item handling and redstone control
Iron Furnaces adds configurable sides for item transfer, so you can choose which faces of a furnace accept input and which push out results. That makes them easy to hook into pipes and storage for automation.[1][7]
Unverified The pack also has a Furnace Settings Linker, which by its name copies settings between furnaces, but the provided sources don't describe how it works.
Furnaces also support several redstone modes for controlling when they run or reporting their status:[7]
- Redstone Control mode: the furnace will not smelt while it receives a redstone signal.[7]
- Redstone Inverse Control mode: the furnace will only smelt while it receives a redstone signal.[7]
- Comparator mode: the furnace acts as an internal comparator and outputs the signal to all sides.[7]
- Comparator Subtraction mode: the same as Comparator mode, but you can subtract a signal strength that you configure in the furnace GUI.[7]
Experience
Smelting XP is stored in the furnace. In this pack a furnace can hold up to 100 levels of experience from recipes (that's 30,971 XP); anything beyond that is voided, so don't let it pile up forever.[8]
The mod's tooltips also describe two experience modes: one ejects smelting experience into nearby fluid tanks, and the other gives it to the player who placed the furnace. You switch between them by sneaking and right-clicking in the air.[7]
Light
All the Mods 10 sets misc.misc.lightupdates to true, which disables light updates, so furnaces will not emit light. Don't count on a wall of lit furnaces to light up your base.[8]
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
Your Iron Furnaces journey starts in Chapter 1 with the "Furnace Upgrades!" quest quest. It completes as soon as you have either the first Iron or Copper tier, or one of the upgrade items that gets you there. These furnaces are more than faster smelters. They accept Augments that change how they work, and you can set them to automatically pull from and push to their sides using the config on the left of the interface.[5]
As a baseline, a normal vanilla Furnace takes 200 ticks to smelt one item, and 20 ticks equals 1 second. Every tier below cuts that time down. In the Generators N Furnaces chapter, each tier has its own quest, so you can follow the chain step by step.[3]
Early tiers: Copper, Iron, Silver and Gold
- Copper Furnace ("Copper Furnace" quest) smelts in 180 ticks and makes great use of spare Copper. You can turn it into either a Silver or an Iron Furnace.[3]
- Iron Furnace ("Iron Furnace" quest) smelts in 160 ticks, which is 8 seconds. You can craft it from a normal Furnace or from a Copper Furnace, and it leads into either Silver or Gold.[3]
- Silver Furnace ("Silver Furnace" quest) smelts in 140 ticks, which is 7 seconds. You can make it from a Copper or an Iron Furnace, and it can be used to craft a Gold Furnace.[3]
- Golden Furnace ("Golden Furnace" quest) smelts in 120 ticks. You can make it from a Silver or an Iron Furnace, and it is the only way into the Diamond tier.[3]

Mid tiers: Diamond, Emerald, Crystal and Obsidian
- Diamond Furnace ("Diamond Furnace" quest) smelts in 80 ticks, which is 4 seconds and even faster than a Blast Furnace. You can only make it from a Gold Furnace, and it branches into Emerald or Crystal.[3]
- Emerald Furnace ("Emerald Furnace" quest) smelts in 40 ticks, which is just 2 seconds. You make it from a Diamond Furnace, and it leads to Obsidian.[3]
- Crystal Furnace ("Crystal Furnace" quest) works the same as the Emerald Furnace at 40 ticks, so which branch you take is up to you. It is transparent, but you can't actually see items smelting inside it. It also comes from a Diamond Furnace and leads to Obsidian.[3]
- Obsidian Furnace ("Obsidian Furnace" quest) smelts every 20 ticks, which is 1 second. You can make it from either a Crystal or an Emerald Furnace, and it is the step into Netherite.[3]

Endgame: Netherite and the ATM metals
- Netherite Furnace ("Netherite Furnace" quest) smelts an item every 5 ticks, so you get 4 items per second. You craft it from an Obsidian Furnace, and you don't need a Smithing Template.[3]
- Allthemodium Furnace ("Allthemodium Furnace" quest) is pretty much the same as the Netherite Furnace, but you need it to reach Vibranium.[3]
- Vibranium Furnace ("Vibranium Furnace" quest) is even better than the Allthemodium Furnace.[3]
- Unobtainium Furnace ("Unobtainium Furnace" quest) smelts items faster than any other furnace in the pack.[3]

How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?
3 parts
Iron Furnaces isn't only about faster smelting in All the Mods 10. The pack adds its own recipes that use Iron Furnaces items as ingredients for some of its biggest crafts, next to high-end parts from many other mods.[6]
Endgame crafting recipes
The Rainbow Furnace is an ingredient in the pack's recipe for the Improbable Probability Device. It shares the crafting grid with late-game items from several other mods, so your furnace line eventually feeds into one of the pack's big crafting goals.[6]

Energy and automation
With the Augment: Factory, your furnace runs on Energy instead of Fuel, and the quest compares it to Mekanism's Smelting Factory. Pipe Energy in and it starts smelting.[3]
The Augment: Generator does the opposite. The furnace stops smelting items and turns every Fuel it burns into Energy, so it can act as a power source for your base.[3]
If you'd rather send power wirelessly, place a Wireless Heat Transmitter and put Energy into it. Next, put a Wireless Heat Receiver into the Transmitter to bind it. Then place the Receiver in a furnace's Fuel slot and the furnace starts running.[3]
For item logistics, the furnace's configuration menu lets you set each side to Input, Output, both, Fuel input or nothing. You can also turn on auto input and output to move items to and from connected inventories. That makes it easy to hook furnaces up to pipes from other mods, and the Furnace Settings Linker copies these settings to your other furnaces.[3]
Other compatibility
The mod's project page says Iron Furnaces should work with most mods and has explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO.[1]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
Iron Furnaces appears in three quest chapters in this pack. The first steps are in Chapter 1: The Beginning, the full furnace ladder lives in its own chapter called Generators N Furnaces, and Chapter 3: The ATM Star asks for the endgame Rainbow gear.[3][4][5]
Chapter 1: The Beginning
- "Furnace Upgrades!" quest is your first stop. You can complete it with an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, an Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or an Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. It also points out that you can set these furnaces to auto-pull or push from their sides using the config on the left of the interface.[5]
- "Furnace Augments" quest comes next. Any one augment completes it: Augment: Blasting, Augment: Smoking, Augment: Factory, Augment: Generator, Augment: Speed or Augment: Fuel Efficiency.[5]
Generators N Furnaces: the furnace ladder
This chapter walks you through every tier. Each quest just asks you to get that furnace, and the quest text gives its smelt time. For comparison, a normal furnace takes 200 ticks per item, and 20 ticks make 1 second.[3]
- After The Furnace, you can go for "Copper Furnace" quest (180 ticks) and "Iron Furnace" quest (160 ticks, or 8 seconds).[3]
- "Silver Furnace" quest unlocks after the Copper and Iron quests and smelts at 140 ticks. "Golden Furnace" quest comes after Iron and Silver and smelts at 120 ticks.[3]
- "Diamond Furnace" quest follows the Golden Furnace and takes 80 ticks, or 4 seconds. The quest points out that this is faster than a Blast Furnace.[3]
- From Diamond, the line branches into "Emerald Furnace" quest and "Crystal Furnace" quest. Both work at 40 ticks.[3]
- "Obsidian Furnace" quest follows Crystal and Emerald and smelts every 20 ticks. "Netherite Furnace" quest comes after it and smelts an item every 5 ticks, which is 4 items per second.[3]
- After Netherite, the All the Mods tiers continue in order: "Allthemodium Furnace" quest, then "Vibranium Furnace" quest, then "Unobtainium Furnace" quest. The Unobtainium quest calls it the fastest furnace in the pack.[3]
Side quests in the same chapter
Once you have the Copper and Iron Furnace quests done, several side quests open up. a quest in "Generators N Furnaces" asks for the Furnace Spooka-lator, and a quest in "Generators N Furnaces" asks for the Furnace Wrapping Papers. Right-click a furnace with either one to apply the look, and shift-right-click to remove it.[3]
a quest in "Generators N Furnaces" asks for the Wireless Heat Transmitter and the Wireless Heat Receiver. To use them, put energy into the transmitter, place the receiver in the transmitter to bind it, then put the receiver in a furnace's fuel slot. "Configurations" quest asks for the Furnace Settings Linker, which copies a furnace's side, auto-input/output and redstone settings to other furnaces.[3]
Each augment also has its own quest, all unlocked after Augments. Among them, "Augment: Speed" quest notes that a Diamond Furnace goes from 80 to 40 ticks at twice the fuel cost. "Augment: Fuel Efficiency" quest notes that one coal smelts 16 items instead of 8. The other augment quests are "Augment: Blasting" quest, "Augment: Smoking" quest, "Augment: Factory" quest and "Augment: Generator" quest.[3]
Unverified The two quest chapters disagree on how much the Fuel Efficiency augment slows a furnace down: one says it halves the speed, the other says it reduces speed by 25%. Test it in-game before planning around it.
The Rainbow endgame
- "&zRainbow Plating" quest asks for 8 Rainbow Plating. It requires every furnace quest from Copper through Obsidian.[3]
- "&zRainbow Core" quest unlocks after Netherite and asks for a Rainbow Core. The quest says this takes 2 Netherite Furnaces and 7 colors of glass.[3]
- "&zRainbow Furnace" quest needs both of those and asks for the Rainbow Furnace. It smelts in 20 ticks, but a whole stack at a time.[3]
- "&zRainbow Coal" quest asks for Rainbow Coal, which you get by blowing up a Rainbow Furnace.[3]
- "&zRainbow Generator" quest asks for a Rainbow Furnace plus one of every furnace from Copper to Netherite. If all 9 of those furnaces surround a Rainbow Furnace and they all run the Generator augment, the Rainbow Furnace makes 2kFE a tick more.[3]
Chapter 3: The ATM Star
The ATM Star chapter comes back to this mod with "2 &zRainbow Furnaces" quest and "&zRainbow Coal" quest. The quest notes that you need 2 Rainbow Furnaces to craft the Improbable Probability Device, so plan on building two.[4]
Which Iron Furnaces config options matter?
4 parts
Iron Furnaces keeps nearly all of its settings in one file, and All the Mods 10 leaves most of them at the mod's defaults. There is one change you'll notice, though, and it makes two mid-game furnaces better than they would be in other packs. Here's what matters and how this pack sets it.[8]
What All the Mods 10 changed
The pack moves the Diamond and Emerald furnaces from tier 1 up to tier 2. You can see this in furnaces.diamond_furnace.tier and furnaces.emerald_furnace.tier, which are both set to 2 instead of the mod default of 1. Tier 2 is the highest tier available, the same one used by the Crystal, Obsidian, Netherite and Million furnaces.[8]
The tier decides how much energy a furnace can store. This means your Diamond and Emerald furnaces get the tier 2 buffer of 1,000,000 instead of the tier 1 buffer of 200,000.[8]
- Tier 0 furnaces store 80,000 energy, set by furnaces.energy.tier_0.[8]
- Tier 1 furnaces store 200,000 energy, set by furnaces.energy.tier_1.[8]
- Tier 2 furnaces store 1,000,000 energy, set by furnaces.energy.tier_2.[8]
Speed and RF per furnace
Each furnace has a speed setting, which is the number of ticks it takes to finish one smelt. For comparison, a regular furnace takes 200 ticks. Each furnace also has a generation setting, which is the RF it generates per tick. In this pack, all of these are the mod defaults.[8]
- Copper Furnace: 180 ticks per smelt, 40 RF per tick, tier 0.[8]
- Iron Furnace: 160 ticks per smelt, 40 RF per tick, tier 0.[8]
- Silver Furnace: 140 ticks per smelt, 100 RF per tick, tier 1.[8]
- Gold Furnace: 120 ticks per smelt, 160 RF per tick, tier 1.[8]
- Diamond Furnace: 80 ticks per smelt, 240 RF per tick, tier 2 in this pack.[8]
- Emerald Furnace: 40 ticks per smelt, 320 RF per tick, tier 2 in this pack.[8]
- Crystal Furnace: 40 ticks per smelt, 360 RF per tick, tier 2.[8]
- Obsidian Furnace: 20 ticks per smelt, 500 RF per tick, tier 2.[8]
- Netherite Furnace: 5 ticks per smelt, 1,000 RF per tick, tier 2.[8]
- Rainbow Furnace: 20 ticks per smelt and 2,000 RF per tick. It also has a separate furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation option, set to 50,000, which controls how much power the Rainbow Furnace generates.[8]
The Allthemodium furnaces
The three modded furnaces are all tier 2 and have one extra option called mult. It sets how many items the furnace smelts at once, while a regular furnace smelts only 1. These values are also unchanged from the defaults.[8]
- Allthemodium Furnace: 5 ticks per smelt, 16 items at once, 2,000 RF per tick.[8]
- Vibranium Furnace: 3 ticks per smelt, 32 items at once, 3,000 RF per tick.[8]
- Unobtainium Furnace: 1 tick per smelt, 64 items at once, 5,000 RF per tick.[8]
Other handy options
furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level is set to 100. That's how many levels of experience a furnace can store from its recipes, and 100 levels is 30,971 XP. Once the stored experience reaches that amount, anything extra is voided, so collect your XP now and then.[8]
misc.misc.lightupdates is set to true in this pack. According to the option's own description, true disables light updates, so furnaces no longer emit light. Don't count on them to light up your base.[8]
What changed in Iron Furnaces between versions?
1 part
Iron Furnaces has been in All the Mods 10 for a long time. It was first included in version 2.25 or earlier, and All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Iron Furnaces 4.3.2, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]
Updates across pack releases
The pack changelogs record three Iron Furnaces updates. Here they are in order, oldest first:[9][10][11]
- All the Mods 10 3.2 updated Iron Furnaces from 4.2.6 to 4.3.0.[11]
- All the Mods 10 4.5 updated Iron Furnaces from 4.3.0 to 4.3.1.[10]
- All the Mods 10 4.12 updated Iron Furnaces from 4.3.1 to 4.3.2.[9]
Version 4.3.2, which arrived in the 4.12 update, is the same version shipped in All the Mods 10 8.1. If your furnaces worked a certain way in 4.12, you're on the same mod version now.[2][9]
Unverified No changelogs for the shipped Iron Furnaces jars are available, so this guide can't confirm what each update changed, such as bug fixes, new features, or balance tweaks. The pack changelogs only record the version bumps.
