What is Industrial Foregoing: Souls?

2 parts

Industrial Foregoing: Souls is an add-on for Industrial Foregoing that uses souls extracted from Wardens to accelerate your machines. If you already run Industrial Foregoing setups and want them faster, this is the mod for you. The pack includes version 1.10.7.[1][2]

It works in three steps. A Soul Laser Base fitted with a Blue Laser Lens pulls souls out of a Warden. You then place a Soul Surge pointing at the block you want to speed up and link it to the laser base with Soul Pipe. A redstone signal on the Soul Surge stops it. The quest also says you can pull the souls out with pipes or use AE2 or RS digital storage.[1][3]

Tip: Don't forget the lens. The laser base needs the Blue Lens to extract souls, and the Stasis Chamber is the recommended way to hold the Warden.[1][3]

What the boost does

By default, each soul lasts 15 seconds and makes the machine 4 times faster. The mod page says both values can be changed in the config. You can also stop specific blocks from being accelerated by adding them to the block tag industrialforegoingsouls:cant_accelerate. The mod also adds a way to get more Echo Shards, since it uses a lot of them.[1]

Unverified The sources only show the mod's default config values. Whether this pack changes the soul duration, the speed multiplier or the other laser base settings is unconfirmed.

Where it fits in the pack

In the Industrial Foregoing quest chapter, the Souls quest "Industrial Foregoing &#27AEB9Souls" quest unlocks after Supreme Machine Frame, so it comes fairly late in the Industrial Foregoing line. Its tasks are to obtain the Blue Laser Lens, Soul Laser Base, Soul Pipe and Soul Surge. The quest describes the laser base as working like a Fluid Laser Base extracting Ether Gas from a Wither.[3]

Watch out: Extracting souls hurts the Warden, and the quest warns it can even die. Use a Stasis Chamber, ideally with upgrades for faster healing. Keep a 3 block gap between the floor and the Soul Laser Base, and make sure the Warden has fully emerged before you put it under stasis.[3]

How do you get started with Industrial Foregoing: Souls?

4 parts

Industrial Foregoing: Souls lets you speed up other machines with souls taken from a Warden. The pack's quest "Industrial Foregoing &#27AEB9Souls" quest is your roadmap. It unlocks after the Supreme Machine Frame quest, so this is a mid-game upgrade and not a day-one project.[1][3]

What you need, in order

  1. Make the Soul Laser Base. It's the heart of the setup: with a Blue Laser Lens it extracts souls from a Warden. It's the most expensive piece, so start here.[3][4]
  2. Get a Blue Laser Lens. The quest lists it as a required item, and the mod page warns you not to forget the lens. I couldn't confirm its recipe in the sources I have.[1][3]
  3. Make the Soul Pipe. These pipes carry souls from the laser base to your Soul Surges. The quest also says souls can go into AE2 or RS storage.[3][4]
  4. Make the Soul Surge. Place it pointing at the block you want to accelerate, then connect it to the laser base with Soul Pipes.[1][3][4]

Recipes

All three items are crafted in the Dissolution Chamber, and the pack added these recipes itself. Here's the exact in-pack version of each.[4]

Setting up the Warden

Extracting souls hurts the Warden, and it can die from it. The quest strongly recommends Stasis Chambers, ideally with upgrades so it heals faster. Keep a 3 block gap between the floor and the Soul Laser Base, and make sure the Warden has fully emerged before you put it into stasis.[3]

Watch out: Don't put a Warden into stasis before it has fully emerged. The quest specifically warns about this.[3]

What to expect

By default, each soul lasts 15 seconds and makes the accelerated machine 4 times faster. The mod's default config shows the Warden is not killed (KILL_WARDEN is false). The sources don't show whether this pack changed any of these values, so check the config in your own world.[1]

A redstone signal on a Soul Surge stops it from working, which is handy for switching acceleration on and off. Blocks in the tag industrialforegoingsouls:cant_accelerate can't be accelerated.[1]

Unverified The recipe for the Blue Laser Lens, and how this pack lets you get extra Echo Shards, aren't confirmed in the sources, so check them in-game.

How does Industrial Foregoing: Souls work?

4 parts

Industrial Foregoing: Souls is all about Warden souls. You pull souls out of a Warden with the Soul Laser Base, then spend them to speed up other machines with the Soul Surge. They are linked by Soul Pipe blocks.[1]

Getting souls out of a Warden

The Soul Laser Base extracts the souls, and it needs a Blue Lens to do it, so don't forget to add a lens. The mod's page also says the Stasis Chamber will be your friend when you do this.[1]

Each time the laser completes an operation it hurts the Warden and generates souls. This pack changes several of those values from the mod's defaults:[5]

Watch out: In this pack IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulLaserBase.KILL_WARDEN is true. The option decides whether the Warden is killed when its life gets near 0 or kept alive, so a Warden you farm can die. Plan for that before you build a long-term setup.[5]

Moving souls with Soul Pipes

Soul Pipes carry the souls from the Soul Laser Base to the Soul Surge. Each pipe can hold 4 souls, which is the same as the mod default. See IFSoulsMachines.SOUL_AMOUNT_PER_PIPE.[1][5]

Accelerating a block with the Soul Surge

Place the Soul Surge so it points at the block you want to speed up, then connect it with Soul Pipes to the Soul Laser Base. Once the base has souls stored, the Surge uses them. A redstone signal on the Soul Surge stops it, which is handy for switching your accelerated machines on and off.[1]

By default each soul makes the target 4 times faster. In this pack a soul lasts 200 ticks instead of the mod default of 300, set by IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.SOUL_TIME. So souls run out faster here than the mod's page suggests.[1][5]

The extra ticks are 4 for tile entities, 4 for blocks and 4 for mobs, all unchanged from the mod defaults. The options are IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.ACCELERATION_TICK, IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.BLOCK_ACCELERATION_TICK and IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.ENTITIES_ACCELERATION_TICK.[5]

Random-tick blocks are accelerated on a chance basis. This pack sets that chance to 0.025 (mod default 0.03) with IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.RANDOM_TICK_ACCELERATION_CHANCE.[5]

Tip: To stop a block from being accelerated, add it to the block tag industrialforegoingsouls:cant_accelerate.[1]

Crafting the machines

All of these parts are crafted in the Dissolution Chamber, and the recipes are added by this pack. Here is the Soul Laser Base:[4]

How do you progress through Industrial Foregoing: Souls?

4 parts

Industrial Foregoing: Souls adds machines that accelerate other machinery. In this pack's quest book it sits in the Industrial Foregoing chapter as "Industrial Foregoing &#27AEB9Souls" quest, and it comes after the Supreme Machine Frame quest.[3]

What the quest asks for

The quest tasks are to get a Blue Laser Lens, a Soul Laser Base, a Soul Pipe and a Soul Surge.[3]

How the chain works

  1. The Soul Laser Base is the heart of the setup. It works similarly to a Fluid Laser Base extracting Ether Gas from a Wither, but it uses a Blue Laser Lens to extract souls from a Warden.[3]
  2. The extracted souls can be pulled out with Soul Pipes, or used with one of the two major digital storage mods, AE2 and RS.[3]
  3. Soul Surges use those souls to accelerate blocks.[3]

Crafting

All three Souls items are crafted in the Dissolution Chamber, and the pack added each of these recipes. First up is the Soul Laser Base.[4]

Setting up the Warden safely

Extracting souls is painful for the Warden. It takes damage from the process and can even die from it, so the quest highly recommends Stasis Chambers, especially with upgrades to make the healing faster.[3]

Watch out: Leave a 3 block gap between the floor and the Soul Laser Base. Also make sure the Warden has fully emerged before you put it under stasis.[3]

How does Industrial Foregoing: Souls work with other mods?

3 parts

Industrial Foregoing: Souls is an add-on for Industrial Foregoing, and this pack ties it into several other mods. Most of that happens in crafting, and a bit of it in how you store souls.[1][4]

Pack-added Dissolution Chamber recipes

The pack adds its own recipes for the Soul Laser Base, the Soul Surge and the Soul Pipe. These recipes are made in the Industrial Foregoing Dissolution Chamber, and they mix Industrial Foregoing parts with items from other mods or from vanilla Minecraft.[4]

The Soul Laser Base needs a Supreme machine frame from Industrial Foregoing. It also takes vanilla sculk blocks and an item from Just Direct Things.[4]

Storing souls with AE2 or RS

The quest text says you can pull souls from the Soul Laser Base with Soul Pipes, or store them in one of the two major digital storage mods, AE2 and RS. Pipes are the simplest route if you only want to feed Soul Surges directly.[3]

Quest progression

The quest "Industrial Foregoing &#27AEB9Souls" quest sits in the Industrial Foregoing chapter and unlocks after the Supreme Machine Frame quest. Its tasks are to obtain the Soul Laser Base, Soul Pipe and Soul Surge, plus the Industrial Foregoing Blue Laser Lens.[3]

Tip: The Soul Laser Base needs a Blue Laser Lens to pull souls from a Warden, so don't forget to add one. The quest also recommends Stasis Chambers, because the extraction damages the Warden and can even kill it.[1][3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Industrial Foregoing: Souls?

4 parts

In this pack, the mod's quest content is a single quest in the Industrial Foregoing chapter: "Industrial Foregoing &#27AEB9Souls" quest, subtitled "Gotta go fast!". It's about speeding up other machines with souls, and it's the only quest in the sources that involves this mod.[3]

Where it sits in the chapter

The quest comes after the Supreme Machine Frame quest, so you'll want to have that one done first.[3]

What it asks for

The quest's tasks are these items:[3]

How the setup works

The quest text explains that the Soul Laser Base is the heart of the system. It works similarly to a Fluid Laser Base extracting Ether Gas from a Wither, but here it uses a Blue Laser Lens to extract souls from a Warden.[3]

Once extracted, the souls can be moved with Soul Pipe or used with one of the two major digital storage mods, AE2 and RS. They are then used by Soul Surge blocks, which accelerate other blocks.[3]

Warden safety tips

Extracting souls is painful for the Warden. It takes damage from the process and can even die from it, so the quest text highly recommends Stasis Chambers, especially with upgrades that make the healing faster.[3]

  • Leave a 3 block gap between the floor and the Soul Laser Base.[3]
  • Make sure the Warden has fully emerged before you put it under stasis.[3]

Which Industrial Foregoing: Souls config options matter?

3 parts

Industrial Foregoing: Souls has two groups of options: the Soul Laser Base, which pulls souls out of a Warden, and the Soul Surge, which spends those souls to speed up machines. This pack changed most of the laser settings and two of the surge settings. Everything below comes from the pack's machines config file.[1][5]

Soul Laser Base: what the pack changed

Watch out: IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulLaserBase.KILL_WARDEN is true in this pack, so the Warden is killed when its life gets near 0 instead of being kept alive. Combined with the higher damage per operation, plan for the Warden to die sooner than the mod's own defaults would suggest.[5]

Soul Surge: shorter souls, slightly fewer random ticks

Left at the mod default

The acceleration strength is unchanged at 4 extra ticks for each target type: IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.ACCELERATION_TICK for tile entities, IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.BLOCK_ACCELERATION_TICK for blocks and IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.ENTITIES_ACCELERATION_TICK for mobs. IFSoulsMachines.SOUL_AMOUNT_PER_PIPE is also still 4, so each Soul Pipe holds 4 souls.[5]

Tip: Since the surge strength is unchanged, the pack's tuning is mostly about how many souls you get, how fast the laser works, and how long each soul lasts. Plan your soul supply around the 200-tick soul time rather than the longer default.[5]

Unverified The mod's project page lists a default of false for the Warden-kill option, but the pack's config file does not mark that option as changed, so whether the pack actually differs from the mod default there is unconfirmed.

What changed in Industrial Foregoing: Souls between versions?

1 part

Industrial Foregoing: Souls has been in All the Mods 10 since version 2.25 or earlier. All the Mods 10 8.1 ships version 1.10.7 of the mod. The pack changelogs only record version bumps, so this section is short.[2]

Pack releases that updated the mod

  • All the Mods 10 2.32: updated from 1.10.3 to 1.10.4.[6]
  • All the Mods 10 4.13: updated from 1.10.4 to 1.10.5.[7]
  • All the Mods 10 5.5: updated from 1.10.5 to 1.10.7. This is the version still in 8.1.[2][8]

The pack hasn't updated the mod since 5.5, so 8.1 behaves like 1.10.7.[2][8]

Unverified What changed inside the mod in each of these updates (fixes, balance changes, new features) is unverified. No changelogs for the shipped jars were available, so check the mod's own release notes before assuming anything changed for the better or worse.
