What is Just Dire Things?
1 part
Just Dire Things is a self-contained tech-and-gear mod: you grow your own crafting resources as coloured "goo", refine them into metals and fuels, then build a full set of tools, armour, automation blocks and quality-of-life gadgets out of them. This pack ships version 1.0.3 of the mod, and it has been part of the pack since an earlier release, so it's a stable, fully questified part of your playthrough.[1]
It's a great fit if you like a progression you can see: each tier of goo unlocks the next tier of fuel and the next tier of gear, and the machines you make along the way are small, cheap and immediately useful rather than a giant multiblock project.[2]
Where it sits in the pack
The mod gets its own quest chapter, and everything in it hangs off one starting point: Primogel Goo in a quest in "?". From there the chapter branches three ways: into fuels with Primal Coal, into higher goo tiers with Blazebloom Goo, and into metal with Raw Ferricore and Ferricore Ingot.[2]
- Ferricore is the gateway tier: once you've done a quest in "?" the chapter opens up into the full tool and armour set, plus the Ferricore Wrench and Upgrade: Blank that the upgrade system runs on.[2]
- The same Ferricore step unlocks the automation blocks: Simple Block Breaker, Simple Block Placer, Simple Clicker, Simple Dropper, Simple Sensor, Simple Fluid Collector, Simple Fluid Placer and the Simple Coal Generator and Simple Fuel Generator to power them.[2]
- Tier 2 goo leads to Raw Blazegold and Blazegold Ingot, which in turn gate the Blazegold gear, the Portal Gun, the Player Accessor and the Totem of Death Recall.[2]
- Goo keeps climbing through VoidShimmer Goo to Shadowpulse Goo, with the fuel line following it via Blaze Ember and Voidflame Coal.[2]
- A separate fluid branch starts at Polymorphic Fluid Bucket and leads to Portal Fluid Bucket and the refined fuels such as Blaze Ember Fuel Bucket.[2]
Unverified The mod also includes later-tier materials such as Celestigem and Eclipse Alloy along with wands and a large upgrade catalogue, but the quest ordering and requirements for those tiers aren't covered by the sources available here.
How do you get started with Just Dire Things?
4 parts
Just Dire Things has one clear ladder in this pack: coloured goo blocks. Each goo tier unlocks the metal, the coal and the gear of that tier, and the quest chapter is laid out the same way, so if you follow the quests you follow the progression.[2]
Step one: Primogel Goo
Primogel Goo is the root of the whole chapter. Its quest, a quest in "?", is what opens the three branches you start with: a quest in "?" for Primal Coal, a quest in "?" for Blazebloom Goo, and a quest in "?" for Raw Ferricore and Ferricore Ingot.[2]
Unverified How you actually obtain Primogel Goo in the world isn't covered by the pack files used for this guide, so check the quest description in game.
Of those three, go for Ferricore first. Primal Coal and Blazebloom Goo are single steps that wait for you; Ferricore is the ingot everything else in the early game hangs off.[2]
Ferricore: your first tier
Ferricore Ingot is a prerequisite for more quests than anything else at this stage. Once you have it, these lines all open up at once:[2]
- The full tool set, from Ferricore Pickaxe and Ferricore Axe to Ferricore Shovel, Ferricore Sword and Ferricore Hoe.[2]
- The armour set: Ferricore Helmet, Ferricore Chestplate, Ferricore Leggings and Ferricore Boots.[2]
- The tier 1 machines: Simple Block Breaker, Simple Block Placer, Simple Sensor, Simple Dropper, Simple Clicker, Simple Fluid Collector and Simple Fluid Placer.[2]
- Power and storage helpers: Simple Coal Generator, Simple Fuel Generator, Pocket Generator, Fuel Canister and Fluid Canister.[2]
- Quality of life: Ferricore Wrench, Machine Settings Copier and Item Collector.[2]
- Upgrade: Blank, which shares the Ferricore ingot as a prerequisite and is the base of the mod's upgrade system.[2]
If you want one thing to build first, make it the Simple Coal Generator and feed it the Primal Coal from the other early branch, then add a block breaker and placer for your first bit of automation.[2]

Step two: Blazegold
Blazebloom Goo leads straight to a quest in "?", the Raw Blazegold and Blazegold Ingot step. Raw Blazegold goes in a furnace or a blast furnace, whichever you have running.[2][3]
A blasting version exists too if you want it twice as fast.
Blazegold is where the fun toys start: Portal Gun, Creature Catcher, Totem of Death Recall, Blazejet Wand, Simple Swapper, Player Accessor and Energy Transmitter all sit behind that ingot, alongside the Blazegold tools and armour.[2]
Where it goes from here
After that the pattern repeats. Blazebloom Goo leads to VoidShimmer Goo, which unlocks Celestigem and Voidflame Coal; VoidShimmer Goo leads to Shadowpulse Goo, which unlocks Eclipse Alloy Ingot and Eclipse Ember. Celestigem is also the gate for the tier 2 machines, so that's your next real automation jump.[2]
How does Just Dire Things work?
7 parts
The sources for this mod are thin on explanations. They cover power numbers, a few machine recipes and the ability toggles, but not machine GUIs, multiblocks or item and fluid piping. So this section sticks to the numbers the pack actually sets, and anything else is marked as unverified.[3][4]
Power generation
The basic fuel generator is configured in the pack to hold up to 1,000,000 FE in its buffer and to output 1,000 FE per tick. Each burn tick of fuel creates 15 FE, and the burn speed multiplier is 4. That means fuel burns four times faster than normal, so it also pays out faster. For reference, the config notes that coal has 1,600 burn ticks and sticks have 100.[4]
Those settings are generator_t1.generator_t1_max_fe, generator_t1.generator_t1_fe_per_tick, generator_t1.generator_t1_fe_per_fuel_tick and generator_t1.generator_t1_burn_speed_multiplier.[4]
The fluid generator is a big step up. It holds 5,000,000 FE and outputs 5,000 FE per tick. The pack lists three fuel tiers by how much FE you get per mB: Tier 2 (Blaze Ember) gives 450, Tier 3 (Voidflame) gives 1,300 and Tier 4 (Eclipse Ember) gives 4,000. The settings are generator_fluid_t1.generator_fluid_t1_max_fe and generator_fluid_t1.generator_fluid_t1_fe_per_tick, plus the three fuel values such as generator_fluid_t1.fuel_tier4_fe_per_mb.[4]
The pocket generator is the portable one. Its config says it charges other items at 5,000 FE per tick. Its buffer is 1,000,000 FE, it makes 15 FE per fuel tick, and its burn speed multiplier is 4. See pocket_generator.pocket_gen_fe_per_tick and pocket_generator.pocket_gen_max_fe.[4]
Moving energy
The Tier 1 energy transmitter stores up to 1,000,000 RF and sends at most 1,000 RF per tick to machines and to other transmitters. Energy is lost over distance, at 1 percent per block. So long chains of transmitters waste power, and it's better to keep them short. Check energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_loss_per_block, energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_max_rf and energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_rf_per_tick.[4]
Fuel canister and furnace use
The fuel canister can hold up to 10,000,000 ticks of fuel, and each furnace operation consumes 200 ticks of it at minimum. The config says a lower value means more efficient fuel use. The settings are fuel_canister.fuel_canister_maximum_fuel and fuel_canister.fuel_canister_minimum_ticks_consumed.[4]
Machine speed
Machines can be set to run less often than every tick. The pack leaves the minimum tick speed at 1, meaning machines can run every tick, and the allowed range is 1 to 100. This is general.minimum_machine_tick_speed.[4]
Block breaker, placer and swapper
These come in a Simple and an Advanced tier. The pack provides crafting recipes for the Simple Block Breaker and Advanced Block Breaker, the Simple Block Placer and Advanced Block Placer, and the Simple Swapper and Advanced Swapper. Here are the exact in-pack recipes.[3]

Each of these machines also has a shapeless recipe that takes one machine and returns the same machine, named with an nbtclear suffix, for example the one for the Simple Block Breaker.[3]
Unverified The sources do not explain what the nbtclear recipes actually do, how these machines are configured, or how they handle items and automation.
Portal gun energy
The Portal Gun V1 holds 100,000 FE and costs 1,000 FE per projectile. The V2 holds 1,000,000 FE and costs 5,000 FE per projectile. See portal_gun.portal_gun_v1_rf_cost and portal_gun.portal_gun_v2_rf_cost.[4]
Tool abilities
The mod's tool abilities each have a true/false toggle in the config. In this pack every listed ability is true except abilities.orescanner, which is false. Examples of the others are abilities.treefeller, abilities.hammer and abilities.smelter. The ore miner's in-game description reads "Auto Harvest connected ores", and the mod's tooltips use "Hold Shift for details" for extra info.[4][5]
Unverified Multiblocks, item and fluid piping, and automation setups for this mod are not covered by the available sources, so this guide does not describe them.
How do you progress through Just Dire Things?
2 parts
In this pack the Just Dire Things quest chapter is built around four material tiers, and the goo blocks are the backbone. Each goo unlocks the next metal or fuel, so you can read the whole chapter as one ladder: Ferricore, Blazegold, Celestigem, then Eclipse Alloy.[2]
The goo and fuel chain
- Start with Primogel Goo (a quest in "?"). It opens three branches: Primal Coal, Blazebloom Goo and the Ferricore quest (a quest in "?"), which asks for Raw Ferricore and Ferricore Ingot.[2]
- Blazebloom Goo (a quest in "?") leads to Raw Blazegold and Blazegold Ingot (a quest in "?"), and on to VoidShimmer Goo.[2]
- Blaze Ember needs both Blazebloom Goo and Primal Coal first.[2]
- VoidShimmer Goo (a quest in "?") unlocks Celestigem and Shadowpulse Goo. Voidflame Coal needs that goo plus Blaze Ember.[2]
- Shadowpulse Goo (a quest in "?") unlocks Raw Eclipse Alloy and Eclipse Alloy Ingot. Eclipse Ember needs that goo plus Voidflame Coal.[2]
The fuel buckets follow the same ladder. Blaze Ember Fuel Bucket, Voidflame Fuel Bucket and Eclipse Ember Fuel Bucket each unlock after the matching coal quest and the previous bucket. The first one also needs Polymorphic Fluid Bucket.[2]
Tier by tier
Ferricore is your entry tier. After the Ferricore ingot quest you get quests for the Ferricore tools and armor, the Ferricore Wrench, Machine Settings Copier, Pocket Generator and the Simple (tier 1) machines such as Simple Block Breaker, Simple Clicker and Simple Dropper.[2]
Blazegold comes next, starting from the raw ore. You can smelt or blast it into an ingot, then craft the Blazegold tools and armor or upgrade your Ferricore gear at a smithing table with Template: Blazegold. Blazegold also gates a few extras: Creature Catcher, Portal Gun, Blazejet Wand and the Simple Swapper, Simple Swapper.[2][3]
Blasting works too.
Every Blazegold tool and armor piece has a matching upgrade recipe like this one.
Celestigem is the third tier. Its tools and armor can be crafted directly or upgraded from the Blazegold piece with Template: Celestigem. The Celestigem quests also unlock the Celestigem Paxel, Advanced Portal Gun, Voidshift Wand and the Advanced (tier 2) machines.[2][3]
The paxel combines three Celestigem tools.
Advanced machines build on their Simple versions. For example, the Advanced Block Breaker is made from a Simple Block Breaker, and the Advanced Swapper is the exception because it needs Eclipse Alloy instead of Celestigem.[2][3]

Eclipse Alloy is the top tier in the quest chapter. It has its own tools, armor and Eclipse Alloy Paxel, plus the Eclipsegate Wand and Template: Eclipse Alloy.[2]
Unverified The sources don't show how to obtain the goo blocks, Celestigem or Ferricore Ingot, or what the Eclipse Alloy upgrade recipes look like. Check in game, in JEI or the recipe viewer, before relying on any of those. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How does Just Dire Things work with other mods?
2 parts
The recipes in the pack that connect Just Dire Things to other mods fall into two groups: one custom recipe that the pack added, and a set of Productive Bees recipes that use Just Dire Things goo and ores.[3]
Time in a Bottle
The pack adds its own crafting recipe for Time in a Bottle. It is not a default recipe from that mod. It is a shaped recipe that takes the Blazegold Pickaxe together with pickaxes from other mods, a bottle o' enchanting and two Productive Lib upgrades. That makes it a nice reason to get Blazegold tools done early.[3]

Productive Bees
Productive Bees has bee conversion recipes for four Just Dire Things bee types, and each one is tied to a goo block. In the sources, Primogel Goo maps to the Ferricore bee, Blazebloom Goo to the Blazegold bee, VoidShimmer Goo to the Celestigem bee and Shadowpulse Goo to the Eclipse Alloy bee.[3]
- Primogel Goo (Primogel Goo) converts to the Ferricore bee.[3]
- Blazebloom Goo (Blazebloom Goo) converts to the Blazegold bee.[3]
- VoidShimmer Goo (VoidShimmer Goo) converts to the Celestigem bee.[3]
- Shadowpulse Goo (Shadowpulse Goo) converts to the Eclipse Alloy bee.[3]
The Productive Bees centrifuge has a recipe for each of these four honeycomb types, and each one gives you wax plus a Just Dire Things material. Ferricore gives Raw Ferricore, Blazegold gives Raw Blazegold, Eclipse Alloy gives Raw Eclipse Alloy, and Celestigem gives Celestigem directly. The wax is Wax.[3]
In other words, you can get Just Dire Things materials from bees as well as from the usual route.[3]
Unverified The quests I could see for this mod are all about Just Dire Things items and don't link to other mods. The goo conversion mechanics (how the bee conversion is carried out in play) and any other cross-mod recipes, such as with Applied Energistics 2, aren't confirmed here.
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Just Dire Things?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.43 guide
All the Just Dire Things quests live in a single chapter called "justdirethings". Every quest in it is untitled, so you'll recognise them by the item they ask for. Almost all of them have one task: get a specific item. Two quests have two items (a raw ore plus its ingot), and the ore scanner upgrade quest also has a checkmark task.[7]
Starting point: goo and coal
The goo quests are the backbone of the chapter. a quest in "?" asks for Primogel Goo and opens the first branches: a quest in "?" for Primal Coal, a quest in "?" for Blazebloom Goo, and a quest in "?" for Raw Ferricore and Ferricore Ingot.[7]
- a quest in "?" asks for Blaze Ember and needs both the second goo quest and the Primal Coal quest.[7]
- a quest in "?" asks for VoidShimmer Goo. a quest in "?" then asks for Voidflame Coal once you also have Blaze Ember done.[7]
- a quest in "?" asks for Shadowpulse Goo, and a quest in "?" asks for Eclipse Ember.[7]
The fuel buckets run as a separate line. a quest in "?" asks for the Polymorphic Fluid Bucket, then a quest in "?" asks for the Portal Fluid Bucket. The refined fuels follow in order: a quest in "?" for Blaze Ember Fuel Bucket, a quest in "?" for Voidflame Fuel Bucket and a quest in "?" for Eclipse Ember Fuel Bucket.[7]
Material tiers
Each material has its own ingot or gem quest, and the gear and machines for that tier hang off it. The ingot quests are a quest in "?" (Ferricore), a quest in "?" (Raw Blazegold and Blazegold Ingot), a quest in "?" (Celestigem) and a quest in "?" (Raw Eclipse Alloy and Eclipse Alloy Ingot).[7]
- Ferricore: tools and armor such as a quest in "?" (Ferricore Sword) and a quest in "?" (Ferricore Chestplate). It also unlocks the first-tier machines, like a quest in "?" (Simple Block Breaker) and a quest in "?" (Simple Clicker), plus utilities such as a quest in "?" (Ferricore Wrench) and a quest in "?" (Pocket Generator).[7]
- Blazegold: tools and armor such as a quest in "?" (Blazegold Pickaxe), plus a quest in "?" (Blazejet Wand), a quest in "?" (Portal Gun), a quest in "?" (Creature Catcher) and a quest in "?" (Energy Transmitter).[7]
- Celestigem: tools and armor including a quest in "?" (Celestigem Paxel), the a quest in "?" (Voidshift Wand), and the advanced machines like a quest in "?" (Advanced Block Breaker) and a quest in "?" (Advanced Portal Gun).[7]
- Eclipse Alloy: tools and armor including a quest in "?" (Eclipse Alloy Paxel), the a quest in "?" (Eclipsegate Wand) and a quest in "?" (Advanced Swapper).[7]
Templates and upgrades
Each material also has a template quest: a quest in "?" (Template: Ferricore), a quest in "?" (Template: Blazegold), a quest in "?" (Template: Celestigem) and a quest in "?" (Template: Eclipse Alloy). Each one needs its material's ingot or gem quest first, and all four also depend on the same upgrade-related quest.[7]
The rest of the chapter is upgrade quests, which come in two groups depending on which prerequisite they hang off. One group includes a quest in "?" (Upgrade: Flight), a quest in "?" (Upgrade: Elytra), a quest in "?" (Upgrade: Death Protection) and a quest in "?" (Upgrade: Phase). The other includes a quest in "?" (Upgrade: Treefeller), a quest in "?" (Upgrade: Hammer) and a quest in "?" (Upgrade: Smelter). a quest in "?" asks for Upgrade: Blank.[7]
Unverified Several quests in this chapter depend on prerequisite quests that are not part of the information I have, so I can't say what those prerequisites ask for, which chapter they belong to, or how the upgrade groups are unlocked.
Which Just Dire Things config options matter?
4 parts
Everything below lives in one file, config/justdirethings-common.toml. These are the values this pack ships with. If you tweak the file yourself, keep in mind that the numbers here are what you get out of the box.[4]
Tool and armor abilities
Every ability toggle in the abilities.hammer family is set to true except one: abilities.orescanner is false in this pack. That means the ore scanner ability is switched off, while related abilities such as abilities.orexray and abilities.oreminer stay on.[4]
Power generation
- Generator (tier 1): generator_t1.generator_t1_burn_speed_multiplier is 4, so fuel burns faster than normal. It makes 15 FE per burn tick (generator_t1.generator_t1_fe_per_fuel_tick), outputs 1,000 FE per tick (generator_t1.generator_t1_fe_per_tick) and holds up to 1,000,000 FE (generator_t1.generator_t1_max_fe).[4]
- Fluid generator (tier 1): outputs 5,000 FE per tick (generator_fluid_t1.generator_fluid_t1_fe_per_tick) and has a 5,000,000 FE buffer (generator_fluid_t1.generator_fluid_t1_max_fe).[4]
- Fluid fuel values per mB: Tier 2 (Blaze Ember) gives 450 FE (generator_fluid_t1.fuel_tier2_fe_per_mb), Tier 3 (Voidflame) gives 1,300 FE (generator_fluid_t1.fuel_tier3_fe_per_mb) and Tier 4 (Eclipse Ember) gives 4,000 FE (generator_fluid_t1.fuel_tier4_fe_per_mb).[4]
- Pocket generator: burn speed multiplier of 4 (pocket_generator.pocket_gen_burn_speed_multiplier), 15 FE per burn tick (pocket_generator.pocket_gen_fe_per_fuel_tick), 5,000 FE per tick when charging other items (pocket_generator.pocket_gen_fe_per_tick) and a 1,000,000 FE buffer (pocket_generator.pocket_gen_max_fe).[4]
Energy transmitter, fuel canister and machines
- Tier 1 energy transmitter: stores up to 1,000,000 RF (energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_max_rf), sends up to 1,000 RF per tick (energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_rf_per_tick) and loses 1 percent per block of distance (energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_loss_per_block).[4]
- Fuel canister: holds up to 10,000,000 ticks of fuel (fuel_canister.fuel_canister_maximum_fuel), and each furnace operation consumes 200 ticks (fuel_canister.fuel_canister_minimum_ticks_consumed). Lower is more efficient.[4]
- Machine tick speed: general.minimum_machine_tick_speed is 1, so machines can be set to run every tick.[4]
Portal gun
- Portal Gun V1: 100,000 FE capacity (portal_gun.portal_gun_v1_rf_capacity) and 1,000 FE per shot (portal_gun.portal_gun_v1_rf_cost).[4]
- Portal Gun V2: 1,000,000 FE capacity (portal_gun.portal_gun_v2_rf_capacity) and 5,000 FE per shot (portal_gun.portal_gun_v2_rf_cost).[4]
Unverified The config file only shows the values this pack uses, not the mod's own defaults. Which of these numbers the pack changed from the mod default, apart from the ore scanner ability being off, is unverified.
