What is Mekanism?

2 parts

Mekanism is a big tech mod built around tiered machinery, high-tech tools, energy generation, transport systems and advanced ore processing. Its main draw is efficiency. Instead of smelting each ore into a single ingot, you can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingot output per ore, as long as you have the infrastructure and energy to support it.[1]

It grows with you. Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded into a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or 9 (ultimate) items at once, so one compact machine can replace rows of furnaces.[1]

  • Hydrogen-powered Jetpack with several flight modes you can toggle.[1]
  • The Robit, a small robotic companion that follows you around.[1]
  • A Digital Miner with filters for automated mining.[1]
  • Transmitters for items, fluids, gases, energy and heat, plus Logistical Transporters for building item networks that sort and filter.[1]

The three mods in this guide

  • Mekanism is the core mod. It covers the machines, ore processing, transport and gadgets.[1]
  • Mekanism Generators adds the power side, from Heat, Bio, Solar and Wind Generators up to the Turbine, Fission Reactor and Fusion Reactor. Without it, you would need another mod to power your Mekanism machines.[2]
  • Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools, including Paxels, for Bronze, Lapis Lazuli, Osmium, Refined Glowstone, Refined Obsidian and Steel. It also adds Paxels for the vanilla tool materials.[3]

All the Mons 1.3.0 includes all three mods at version 10.7.19.[4]

Where it fits in All the Mons

Mekanism has its own quest chapters, and it is big enough that reactors get a separate chapter. The "Mekanism: Reactors" quest chapter is where you go for reactors and invincible armor. It starts you working toward Fissile Fuel for a Fission Reactor.[5]

Mekanism also feeds directly into the ATM Star path. After the Mekanism chapter, the "2 Antimatter Pellets" quest quest asks for Antimatter Pellet. This is truly late-game Mekanism. You crystallize the pellets from Antimatter, which you make by powering huge amounts of Polonium through the SPS. The Polonium comes from activating the neutrons of Nuclear Waste, and you get that waste by running Fissile Fuel through a Fission Reactor. The same path asks for the Module Gravitational Modulating Unit. Put it in the MekaSuit chestplate to get Creative Flight. Crafting it takes some of the most expensive items in the game.[6]

How do you get started with Mekanism?

3 parts

Mekanism is a tech mod built around machines, power generation, gadgets and, above all, ore processing. Here's the pitch: every time you smelt an ore straight into an ingot, you waste most of what you mined. With enough infrastructure and energy, Mekanism's processing chains can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple the ingots you get from each ore. Your early game is about getting that machinery running.[1]

First: sort out your power

Mekanism machines run on energy, and Mekanism Generators is the addon that provides it. Without it you'd need another mod to power your machines. It adds a whole ladder of generators, from simple early options up to the Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine.[2]

Core pieces to grab early

  • Basic Control Circuit: one of the first milestones Mekanism tracks with an advancement, followed later by the Advanced Control Circuit.[8]
  • Configurator: the tool for changing the settings of blocks. It sticks with you all the way to the endgame. You'll use it later to switch Fission Reactor Ports between their input and output modes.[5][8]
  • Basic Pressurized Tube: crafting a Pressurized Tube is its own milestone, and tubes are how you move chemicals between machines.[5][8]

Once your first machines are running, check out the "Machine Upgrades" quest quest. Most machines, at least the simple ones, accept Upgrades, and you'll find the upgrade slots in the top right of the machine's GUI.[9]

Early tools from Mekanism Tools

Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools for Mekanism materials like Bronze, Osmium, Steel, Refined Glowstone and Refined Obsidian, plus Lapis Lazuli. The standout is the Paxel, a pickaxe, axe and shovel in one tool. You can make Paxels from the vanilla tool materials too: Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond.[3]

Watch out: All the Mons changes the recipes for a lot of Mekanism's big-ticket gear, including the Atomic Disassembler, Meka-Tool, the MekaSuit pieces, the Electric Pump and the Digital Miner. Don't plan around recipes you remember from other packs. Check the in-pack recipe before you commit resources.[10]

A long-term goal: the pack's recipe for Mekanism's paxel-style tool.

Unverified The exact order of early machines in this pack isn't confirmed by the available sources, and neither are their in-pack recipes. That includes machines like the Enrichment Chamber, Metallurgic Infuser and Osmium Compressor. Follow the Mekanism chapter of the in-game quest book for the intended progression.

How does Mekanism work?

9 parts

Mekanism is a full tech mod. It gives you low, mid and high tier machinery, high-tech tools, energy generators, transmission systems and processing machines. The goal is to take the tedious mining and crafting off your hands, so here's how the pieces fit together in All the Mons.[1]

Mekanism measures energy in Joules. You'll see that unit on energy capacities, charge rates and energy costs throughout the mod's settings.[11]

Making power

Mekanism itself doesn't really generate power. That job belongs to the official addon Mekanism Generators, and without it you'd need another mod to power your machines. Luckily it's included here, so these are your options:[2]

Machines, tiers and factories

Progression runs through tiers, and control circuits mark each step. You start with a Basic Control Circuit, then move up to Advanced Control Circuit, Elite Control Circuit and Ultimate Control Circuit. Each tier also has its own alloy, and Atomic Alloy is one of the strongest alloys in existence.[8][10]

The big space saver is the factory. Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded into a factory that processes several items at once in a single block: 3 at basic tier, 5 at advanced, 7 at elite and 9 at ultimate. You can craft a factory directly or turn an existing machine into one with a Tier Installer, so you can finally ditch those walls of furnaces.[1][8]

Ore processing

Here's the key idea: if you smelt ore straight into ingots, you waste most of what you mined. Mekanism's processing lines use purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization. With enough infrastructure and energy, they can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore.[1]

Your first step up is the Enrichment Chamber, which increases how much material you get from your ores. The top of the chain uses the Chemical Crystallizer together with the Dissolution Chamber and the Washer.[1][8]

Unverified The exact multiplier each processing stage adds, and which machine chain gives which multiplier, isn't covered by the available sources.

Moving energy, fluids, chemicals and heat

Mekanism has its own transmitters for each kind of resource:[8]

  • Universal Cable carries energy.[8]
  • Mechanical Pipe carries fluids.[8]
  • Pressurized Tube carries chemicals.[8]
  • Thermodynamic Conductor carries heat.[8]
Tip: You don't have to rip out old cables when you tier up. You can upgrade transmitters in place by using the next tier of alloy on them.[8]

Storing everything

Put your extra power into an Energy Cube. Fluids go in a Basic Fluid Tank, and a Basic Chemical Tank holds almost all of your chemicals. For items, you build QIO Drives, and higher-tier drives increase the storage bandwidth.[8]

Configuring and automating machines

The Configurator lets you change the settings of blocks. Once one machine is set up the way you like, a Configuration Card copies its configuration onto another machine, which saves you a lot of time on big builds.[8]

A few more handy tools: a Gauge Dropper used on a gauge in a Mekanism GUI cleans it out. The Dictionary shows you the tags of blocks and items. Mekanism also has a machine that does your crafting for you.[8]

The Fission Reactor

The Fission Reactor turns fission fuel into heat, with a set amount of heat for each mB of fuel. Its size and layout matter. Each fuel assembly raises the maximum burn rate and adds fuel and waste capacity. Each block of the reactor adds room for cooled and heated coolant, and each casing block adds heat capacity, so the reactor takes more energy to heat up.[7]

Watch your waste. Once the output waste tank passes a set percentage, the reactor treats it as excess waste.[7]

Watch out: Reactors take damage, and once damage passes 100% there's a chance of a catastrophic meltdown that grows as the damage keeps climbing. A reactor rebuilt after a meltdown starts out already damaged. If a server disables meltdowns, the reactor shuts itself off instead and won't turn back on until its damage is back at safe levels.[7]

Unverified Whether meltdowns are enabled in All the Mons 1.3.0 isn't shown in the available pack files.

Your experiments can also irradiate the environment. Use a Geiger Counter to check the damage, and craft a Dosimeter if you'll be working near radiation.[8][10]

Power-hungry gear in All the Mons

All the Mons changes the energy balance of Mekanism's top-end gear. The MekaSuit and the Meka-Tool each hold 40,000,000 J without upgrades instead of the mod default of 16,000,000 J, and both accept 200,000 J per tick instead of 100,000 J. Upgrades scale these values quadratically. You can find them under mekasuit.baseEnergyCapacity and mekatool.baseEnergyCapacity.[11]

Watch out: Actions cost more power in this pack too. A Meka-Tool hit costs 4,000 J per 4 units of damage instead of 2,000 J, and teleporting costs 2,500 J per 10 blocks instead of 1,000 J. The Meka-Tool's base damage is also raised to 24 from the default of 4. Plan your charging setup to match.[11]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

6 parts

In All the Mons, Mekanism progression runs through the "Mekanism: Reactors" quest quest chapter. It has two big goals: reactors and endgame armor. Almost everything goes through one early milestone, the Fission Reactor, and that reactor needs Fissile Fuel. So your first job is building a small chemical line.[5]

Step 1: The chemical starter line

  1. Put Sulfur into a Chemical Oxidizer to make Sulfur Dioxide.[5]
  2. Run Water through an Electrolytic Separator to get Oxygen.[5]
  3. Pipe the Oxygen and Sulfur Dioxide into a Chemical Infuser to make Sulfur Trioxide.[5]
  4. For the radioactive half of the fuel, follow "Preparing Uranium" quest. Mine Uranium Ore, turn the ingots into Yellow Cake Uranium in an Enrichment Chamber, then bake that in the Chemical Oxidizer to get Uranium Oxide.[5]

Step 2: The Fission Reactor

Your reactor needs 4 Fission Reactor Port blocks placed in its walls, but not on the edges. Ports start as Input Only, which accepts Fissile Fuel and coolant. Shift right-click a port with the Configurator to cycle it to Output Waste, then to Output Coolant.[5]

Water works as coolant, but Sodium is more efficient and reaches higher temperatures. The downside is that it is harder to get and reuse. To get Sodium, make Brine in a Thermal Evaporation Plant, then split it in an Electrolytic Separator. Add a Fission Reactor Logic Adapter to get Redstone signals for high temperature, critical waste, critical damage and low fuel.[5]

Step 3: Fusion fuels

Deuterium is the easy one. Put a Filter Upgrade in an Electric Pump placed above water so it pulls Heavy Water. Then run the Heavy Water through an Electrolytic Separator to get Oxygen and Deuterium.[5]

Tritium takes more work. You need two Thermal Evaporation Plants: one turns Water into Brine, and the other turns Brine into Liquid Lithium. A Rotary Condensentrator converts that into chemical Lithium, and the Solar Neutron Activator turns it into Tritium. The quest calls this harder than Deuterium but easier than Fissile Fuel.[5]

Step 4: Polonium and Antimatter

Late-game Mekanism gets expensive fast. Every step in this chain eats a lot more input than it gives back, so expect to run it for a long time.[6]

  1. Run Fissile Fuel through your Fission Reactor, which produces Nuclear Waste.[6]
  2. Activate the neutrons in 5mb of Nuclear Waste to get 1mb of Polonium.[6]
  3. Power a large amount of Polonium through the SPS to get a tiny amount of Antimatter.[6]
  4. Crystallize a large amount of Antimatter into a single Antimatter Pellet.[6]

Antimatter Pellets are also part of the pack's ATM Star path, which has a quest for making 2 of them.[6]

Tier breakdown

Your energy storage is the Energized Induction Matrix. Its cells and providers come in four tiers, and their totals stack.[5]

  • Induction Cells hold 3.2GFE (Basic), 25.6GFE (Advanced), 204.8GFE (Elite) and 1.6TFE (Ultimate) each.[5]
  • Induction Providers move 102.4kFE (Basic), 819.2kFE (Advanced), 6.55MFE (Elite) and 52.41MFE (Ultimate) per tick each, in and out.[5]
  • QIO Drives go in a QIO Drive Array, up to 12 at a time. The basic QIO Drive holds 16k items and 128 types, and it is the only drive you can craft without a Fission Reactor.[5]
  • The Hyper-Dense QIO Drive holds 128k items and 256 types. The Time-Dilating QIO Drive is a big step up again, with 1,024 item types. The Supermassive QIO Drive needs Antimatter to craft and holds 16b items and 8,192 types.[5]

Gear tiers

Your first big tool is the Atomic Disassembler, Mekanism's paxel. It can mine any block an Allthemodium Paxel can. Hold Shift and scroll to switch modes. Normal has an Efficiency of 20, which is around Efficiency II. Fast is roughly Efficiency V but uses much more energy. Slow uses less energy. Off only fights.[5]

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

4 parts

Mekanism is woven into a lot of this pack's progression. Most of the links come from recipes the pack added or changed, so Mekanism machines handle materials from other mods, and some endgame crafts from other mods need Mekanism parts.[10]

Ore processing for Allthemodium metals and more

Mekanism's ore processing chain works on the pack's special metals. The pack changed the Mekanism purifying, injecting and dissolution recipes for Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium. You can turn their ores, raw ores, raw blocks, shards and crystals into items like Allthemodium Clump, Vibranium Shard and Unobtainium Clump, or dissolve them into dirty slurries.[10]

Creative items and endgame crafts

Mekanism's creative storage is craftable in this pack, with recipes the pack added. The Creative Energy Cube needs a Block of Unobtainium along with top-tier Mekanism parts. The Creative Chemical Tank and Creative Fluid Tank both call for an ATM Star Block.[10]

The pack also added a Powah energizing recipe that takes an ATM Star and a Creative Energy Cube and outputs a Creative Energy Cube.[10]

Mekanism parts show up in other mods' big crafts too. The Improbable Probability Device needs an Antimatter Pellet, and the Nexium Emitter needs a Module Gravitational Modulating Unit. Iron Jetpacks' Capacitor from the pack's creative capacitor recipe uses an SPS Casing and an Ultimate Induction Cell.[10]

If you're stockpiling antimatter, you can compress Antimatter Pellets into an Antimatter Block and back again. The pack changed both of these recipes.[10]

The "Atomic Dissambler" quest quest explains that the Atomic Disassembler can mine any block an Allthemodium Paxel can. The "Mekanism: Reactors" quest quest starts the reactor path by asking for Sulfur, which you then feed into a Chemical Oxidizer.[5]

Which All the Mons quests use Mekanism?

7 parts

Most of Mekanism's quests in this pack live in one big chapter, Mekanism: Reactors. It covers fissile fuel, Deuterium and Tritium, multiblocks, energy storage, QIO and a whole branch of MekaSuit and Meka-Tool modules. A couple of end-game Mekanism quests also show up in The ATM Star chapter.[5][6]

Kicking off the chapter: fissile fuel

The chapter opens with "Mekanism: Reactors" quest. It asks for sulfur, a Chemical Oxidizer, an Electrolytic Separator and a Chemical Infuser. The quest text walks you through turning sulfur into Sulfur Dioxide, splitting water for Oxygen, and combining the two into Sulfur Trioxide. That is the first step toward Fissile Fuel.[5]

Right after it comes "Preparing Uranium" quest, which covers the radioactive half of the fuel. It wants an Enrichment Chamber, some Yellow Cake Uranium and a Chemical Oxidizer. You use the oxidizer to bake the yellow cake into Uranium Oxide.[5]

Fission reactor quests

Deuterium, Tritium and the boiler

Energy storage

Three quests build up the Energized Induction Matrix. "Induction Ports" quest asks for an Induction Port. "Induction Cells" quest accepts an induction cell of any tier, and "Induction Providers" quest accepts an induction provider of any tier.[5]

Tools, helpers and QIO

The module branch

"Modification Station" quest asks for a Modification Station and unlocks a whole branch of module quests. Each one asks for a single module unit. The Meka-Tool modules include "Excavation Escalation Unit" quest, "Attack Amplification Unit" quest, "Ore Refinement Unit" quest, "Shearing Unit" quest and "Teleportation Unit" quest.[5]

The armor modules are grouped by the piece they go into. Helmet: "Electrolytic Breathing Unit" quest, "Solar Recharging Unit" quest, "Inhalation Purification Unit" quest and "Vision Enhancement Unit" quest. Bodyarmor: "Charge Distribution Units" quest, "Geiger Unit" quest, "Dosimeter Unit" quest and "Elytra Unit" quest. Pants: "Motorized Servo Unit" quest, "Gyroscopic Stabilization Unit" quest and "Locomotive Boosting Unit" quest. Boots: "Hydraulic Propulsion Unit" quest. Every armor piece: "Radiation Shielding Unit" quest, "Laser Dissipation Unit" quest and "Color Modulation Unit" quest.[5]

Watch out: Some Meka-Tool modules clash. The Shearing Unit and the Teleportation Unit can't be combined with each other or with the Farming Unit. Ore Refinement can't be used together with the Silk Touch Unit.[5]

End game in The ATM Star

The ATM Star chapter has two Mekanism quests, and both unlock after a quest called Mekanism. "2 Antimatter Pellets" quest asks for Antimatter Pellet. Its text lays out the long chain behind the pellets: Antimatter is crystallized into pellets, the SPS makes Antimatter out of Polonium, and each 1mb of Polonium takes 5mb of Nuclear Waste from a Fission Reactor. a quest in "The ATM Star" asks for the Module Gravitational Modulating Unit, which gives you Creative Flight in the MekaSuit chestplate.[6]

Unverified The chapter also contains quests like Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor, Turbine, Thermoelectric Boiler, SPS Ports and the MekaSuit pieces. Their tasks and exact place in the quest order couldn't be confirmed here.

Which Mekanism config options matter?

4 parts

This pack doesn't run Mekanism on stock settings. Most of the changes hit two areas: the endgame gear (MekaSuit and Meka-Tool) and the big processing multiblocks. Below are the options you're most likely to notice, with the pack's value next to the mod default wherever the pack changed it.[11][12]

MekaSuit and Meka-Tool: bigger batteries, bigger bills

Both the MekaSuit and the Meka-Tool start with 40,000,000 Joules of storage before upgrades instead of 16,000,000. They also accept 200,000 Joules per tick instead of 100,000. Both values scale quadratically with upgrades. The settings are mekasuit.baseEnergyCapacity, mekasuit.chargeRate, mekatool.baseEnergyCapacity and mekatool.chargeRate.[11]

That extra capacity pays for itself, because nearly everything the gear does costs more in this pack. Here are the MekaSuit changes:[11]

  • Absorbing damage costs 250,000 Joules per unit of damage, up from 100,000 (mekasuit.energy_usage.damage).[11]
  • Fall damage reduction from the boots costs 250 Joules per half heart, up from 50 (mekasuit.energy_usage.fall).[11]
  • Jump boost costs 2,000 Joules per 0.1 of jump motion, up from 1,000. Sprint boost costs 250 Joules per 0.1 of sprint motion, up from 100.[11]
  • Magic damage reduction through the inhalation purification unit costs 2,500 Joules per half heart, up from 1,000. Lessening a potion effect costs 80,000 Joules, up from 40,000.[11]
  • The good news: helmet solar recharging is 1,500 Joules per tick per upgrade installed, up from 500 (mekasuit.solarRechargingRate).[11]

The Meka-Tool hits much harder in this pack. Its base bonus damage is 24 instead of 4, and its attack speed is -0.8 instead of -2.4, so it swings a lot faster. Swinging it as a weapon costs 4,000 Joules per 4 units of damage, up from 2,000.[11]

  • Base mining energy use is 50 Joules instead of 10, and silk touch uses 500 instead of 100. Both get multiplied by the speed factor.[11]
  • Using it as an axe, hoe or shovel, or for shearing, costs 50 Joules instead of 10.[11]
  • Teleporting costs 2,500 Joules per 10 blocks instead of 1,000. Max teleport reach is still 100 blocks.[11]
  • Extended Vein Mining is enabled, so the Meka-Tool can vein mine everything, not just ores and logs (mekatool.extendedMining).[11]
Watch out: The Atomic Disassembler's Vein Mining mode is turned off in this pack (atomic_disassembler.veinMining). Its Fast and Slow modes are still enabled. If you want vein mining, the Meka-Tool is your tool.[11]

Machines and multiblocks

Upgrades are stronger here. The base factor for machine upgrade performance is 16 instead of 10 (maxUpgradeMultiplier).[12]

  • Each block of a boiler holds double the default: 32,000 mB of water (default 16,000), 320,000 mB of steam (default 160,000), and 512,000 mB for both heated and cooled coolant (default 256,000).[12]
  • The SPS needs only 100,000 Joules per mB of input, down from 1,000,000 (sps.energyPerInput). That's a tenth of the default energy cost for antimatter.[12]
  • The Solar Neutron Activator peaks at 256 mB/t instead of 64.[12]
  • The Thermal Evaporation Plant has a heat capacity of 600 instead of 100, so it takes more energy to heat up. Its temperature-to-output ratio is 1.85 instead of 0.4, so it produces more output at a given temperature.[12]
  • The Electric Pump with a Filter Upgrade pulls 50 mB of Heavy Water per water block instead of 10.[12]

Radiation cleans up faster

Radiation sources and irradiated targets both decay with a multiplier of 0.9975 instead of 0.9995, applied roughly once per second. That means radiation fades faster than in default Mekanism. Radioactive Waste Barrels also work faster: they decay 2 mB every 10 ticks instead of 1 mB every 20 ticks.[12]

Unchanged, but good to know

  • Chunkloading is allowed, so the Anchor Upgrade and Dimensional Stabilizer both work (allowChunkloading).[12]
  • The Digital Miner keeps its default radius of 32 blocks and takes 80 ticks per block without upgrades. Easy miner filters are on, so you can drag items from your recipe viewer into its filters.[12]
  • Forge Energy converts to Joules at 2.5 Joules per FE.[12]
  • The Cardboard Box can't pick up blocks from the mods with ids waystones and hyperbox.[12]

Unverified The provided sources don't include any Mekanism Generators or Mekanism Tools config files, so it's unconfirmed whether the pack changes settings for generators, reactors, turbines or the extra tools and armor.

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships all three Mekanism mods on the same version, 10.7.19, built for Minecraft 1.21.1. The files are Mekanism-1.21.1-10.7.19.85.jar, MekanismGenerators-1.21.1-10.7.19.85.jar and MekanismTools-1.21.1-10.7.19.85.jar.[4]

  • Mekanism: version 10.7.19, first included in All the Mons 1.3.0 or earlier.[4]
  • Mekanism Generators: version 10.7.19, first included in All the Mons 1.3.0 or earlier.[4]
  • Mekanism Tools: version 10.7.19, first included in All the Mons 1.3.0 or earlier.[4]
Tip: Because all three share the same version number, they're meant to be run together. If you ever update one of them yourself, keep the other two on the matching version so they stay compatible.[4]

Unverified This guide doesn't yet have pack changelog entries or the mods' own changelogs, so it can't list what changed in Mekanism, Mekanism Generators or Mekanism Tools across All the Mons releases. It also can't confirm which pack version first added them.
