Ars Nouveau is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 5.13.1. Craft spells and construct magical automations (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

Stuck? Why it might not be working

  • Not enough source nearby
In All the Mods 10 8.2, Ars Nouveau 5.13.1, Not enough source nearby means the loaded source jars in Manhattan range 10 add up to less than the recipe's source cost. The apparatus does not draw from one jar. One full jar is 10,000, which covers every enchantment the mod ships, and it does not cover the pack's alloy block at 90,000.

What is Ars Nouveau?

2 parts

Ars Nouveau is a magic mod inspired by Ars Magicka. You build your own spells, craft magical artifacts, perform rituals, and set up adorable magical servants to automate your base. The pack ships version 5.13.1.[1][2]

The mod is built around Glyphs: you slot them into a spellbook and cast them as spells. If you like designing your own tools instead of following fixed recipes, this mod is for you. The in-game documentation is a Patchouli book, the Worn Notebook, which you craft from a book and 1 Lapis Lazuli.[1][3]

How progression works

Your spellbook is your progression bar. The Novice Spell Book only lets you create and use Tier 1 Glyphs. Press C to open the Create a Spell page. The Mage's Spell Book raises your mana and mana regen and unlocks Tier 2 Glyphs.[4]

The final tier is the Archmage Spell Book. You need to have killed the Wilden Chimera first, which means completing a ritual on a Ritual Brazier.[4]

New glyphs are unlocked at the Scribe's Table. There are 3 tiers of glyphs, and each one costs some experience and items.[4]

Source is the mod's power system. Your first big goal is the Source Gem, made in an Imbuement Chamber from Lapis or Amethyst Shards. Store Source in a Source Jar.[4]

The ATM Star path

Ars Nouveau has its own stop in The ATM Star chapter, in the quest "Ars Nouveau" quest. Its task is to get a Source Gem. The quest text sums the mod up as using Glyphs in spellbooks to cast spells.[3]

The next quest is "Glyph of Wither" quest, which asks you to obtain the Glyph Wither. The quest says to throw a few Wither Skeleton Skulls and an Abjuration Essence to make it, and that you may need more EXP if it doesn't work.[3]

Tip: The Scribe's Table can pull items from nearby inventories, so you can keep your glyph materials in a chest next to it instead of carrying them.[4]

How do you get started with Ars Nouveau?

3 parts

Ars Nouveau is all about building your own spells. The pack's quest chapter walks you through the first steps, and here is that path with the reason for each step.[4]

Step by step

  1. Start with the Novice Spell Book ("Spell Books" quest). It's where you create and store your spells, and the C key opens the 'Create a Spell' page. It only lets you use Tier 1 glyphs, so it's a starting point.[4]
  2. Make a Scribe's Table. You need it to unlock new glyphs for your book. There are 3 tiers of glyphs, and each one needs some experience and items. The table can pull items from nearby inventories.[4]
  3. Build an Imbuement Chamber. It makes the Source Gem, one of the main crafting items in Ars. It needs Source to work: it produces a small amount by itself and can also use Source Jars as a power source.[4]
  4. Put Lapis or Amethyst Shards into the chamber. Over time they convert into Source Gems ("Source Gems" quest). A Dowsing Rod gives you Magic Find and Scrying, which helps you spot nearby magic creatures and find amethyst.[4]
  5. Make a Source Jar to start collecting Source, the power system for Ars machines. Source can also be moved with buckets, or by breaking and picking up Source Jars.[4]
  6. With Source Gems you can start crafting the various machines by creating Sourcestone ("Sourcestone" quest).[4]
  7. Make 8 Arcane Pedestal blocks ("Arcane Pedestals" quest). The Ritual Brazier and crafting with an Enchanting Apparatus both need them, and several Imbuement Chamber recipes want pedestals placed around it too.[4]

Recipes you can look up here

Pedestals are the first thing you'll want in bulk, and the Enchanting Apparatus is the machine they support.[4]

Upgrading your spellbook

The next book is the Mage's Spell Book. It raises your overall mana and mana regen and lets you create and use Tier 2 glyphs. It is made by upgrading the Novice book.[4][5]

Book Upgrade (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_nouveau:apprentice_book_upgrade

The final tier is the Archmage Spell Book. You need to have killed the Wilden Chimera first, which is a Ritual you complete using a Ritual Brazier. The upgrade recipe takes the Mage's Spell Book as its base.[4][5]

How does Ars Nouveau work?

6 parts

Ars Nouveau is about powering magical machines and automating your base with small magical servants. This pack keeps the tuning values below at the mod's own defaults, so what you see here is what you get in play. This section covers the mechanics that the pack's configs, recipes and the Occultism integration notes confirm.[1][6]

Arcane pedestals and platforms

The Arcane Platform can be placed in any direction and can be used in place of a pedestal. Both recipes are shown below.[5][7]

Potion Melder costs

The Potion Melder's costs come from the config values below. In the pack's config, each one is listed at the mod default. Potion amounts use a scale where 100 equals 1 potion.[6]

Magical workers and their Source costs

Several creatures produce resources for you. Their pace and Source use come from the pack's common config, and the values shown are the mod defaults.[6]

Spirit Jars and automation

The Occultism integration (Ars Ocultas) lets Occultism spirits work inside Containment Jars. Their original behaviour is kept, and they do not decay, which makes them good for automation.[8][9]

  • A Spirit Jar automatically picks up any item in the 7x7 area centered on it that matches the spirit's filter. For crushing spirits, that means any ore the spirit can process.[9]
  • You can also feed items in with a hopper or with starbuncles, and any pipe should work too. Right-clicking an item directly on the jar works as well.[9]
  • A Crusher Spirit in a jar processes items on its own and flings the output in one of the directions.[9]
  • Janitor Spirits in jars try to pick up nearby items and push them into an inventory next to the jar.[9]

How do you progress through Ars Nouveau?

6 parts

Ars Nouveau progression in this pack follows the Ars Nouveau quest chapter. It runs in three steps: get a spellbook, build up a Source economy, then use the Enchanting Apparatus and Ritual Brazier to unlock the rest. The ATM Star path also asks you to get a Source Gem, so you'll be pulled into this mod sooner or later.[3][4]

Spellbook tiers

Your spellbook is the main tier gate. Each upgrade unlocks a higher tier of glyphs, and each has its own quest.[4]

  1. Novice Spell Book (quest "Spell Books" quest): this is where you create and store spells, and it only lets you create and use Tier 1 glyphs. Press C to open the Create a Spell page.[4]
  2. Mage's Spell Book (quest a quest in "Ars Nouveau"): raises your overall mana and mana regen and allows Tier 2 glyphs.[4]
  3. Archmage Spell Book (quest a quest in "Ars Nouveau"): the final tier. You must have killed the Wilden Chimera, which means completing a ritual at a Ritual Brazier.[4]

Source and the basic machines

The Imbuement Chamber makes Source Gem from Lapis or Amethyst Shards. It makes a little Source on its own and can also draw from Source Jars. Some recipes also need Arcane Pedestals placed around it. If you want amethyst, the Dowsing Rod gives Magic Find and Scrying, which helps you locate it.[4]

With Source Gems you can start making Sourcestone, which you need for the main crafting stations. Source Jar is where you store Source. Quest by quest, the order is Imbuement Chamber, Source Gems, then Source Jar and Sourcestone.[4]

After the Source Jar you can set up Source generation. The quests offer these sourcelinks:[4]

Scribe's Table and glyphs

The Scribe's Table is how you unlock new glyphs. There are 3 tiers of glyphs, and each glyph needs some experience plus items. The table can pull items from nearby inventories. The same table also attaches spells to Spell Parchment and to casting tools like the wand, sword, bow and mirror.[4]

The chapter has one quest per glyph, such as Glyph Harm, Glyph Split and Glyph Wither. They hang off three separate parent quests.[4]

Tip: The Glyph of Wither quest says to throw a few Wither Skeleton Skulls and an Abjuration Essence to make the glyph. If it doesn't work, you probably need more EXP.[3]

Arcane Pedestals and the Enchanting Apparatus

The quest for Arcane Pedestal asks you to make 8 of them. They are needed for the Ritual Brazier and for crafting at the Enchanting Apparatus. To build the apparatus, place an Arcane Core in the ground, put the Enchanting Apparatus on top, and surround it with pedestals. It needs Source to work.[4]

Rituals

The Ritual Brazier casts rituals, and you need Arcane Pedestals around it as well. Light it with a Light spell. The chapter has one quest per ritual, including Awakening, Flight, Summon Wilden and Challenge.[4]

How does Ars Nouveau work with other mods?

2 parts

Ars Nouveau connects to the rest of this pack in two ways. Add-on mods build on its items, and the pack adds or edits recipes that mix Ars items with items from other mods. Everything below comes from the in-pack recipe dump.[5]

Recipes the pack added or changed

The Creative Source Jar is a pack-added recipe at the Enchanting Apparatus. Look for the ATM Star and the Source Gem Block in the recipe below.[5]

Which All the Mons quests use Ars Nouveau?

5 parts

Ars Nouveau has its own quest chapter in the pack, and it also shows up in two other chapters. The main chapter branches out from a welcome quest, then splits into spellbooks, Source power, the Enchanting Apparatus, rituals and glyphs. Here is the order I'd follow.[3][4][10]

The Ars Nouveau chapter: spellbooks

  1. "Spell Books" quest asks for the Novice Spell Book. It only lets you create and use Tier 1 glyphs, and the C key opens the 'Create a Spell' page.[4]
  2. a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks for the Mage's Spell Book. It raises your mana and mana regen and unlocks Tier 2 glyphs.[4]
  3. a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks for the Archmage Spell Book. You need to have killed the Wilden Chimera, and the quest describes this as a ritual done with a Ritual Brazier.[4]

Source and early machines

a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks for the Scribe's Table, where you unlock new glyphs. a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks for the Dowsing Rod, which gives Magic Find and Scrying. Both of these come after an earlier quest that isn't listed in my sources.[4]

  1. a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks for the Imbuement Chamber.[4]
  2. "Source Gems" quest asks for the Source Gem. You make it by putting Lapis or Amethyst Shards into the chamber.[4]
  3. a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks for the Source Jar. "Sourcestone" quest asks for Sourcestone, which is the start of machine crafting.[4]
  4. After the Source Jar come the Sourcelinks: a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Volcanic), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Vitalic), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Agronomic) and a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Mycelial).[4]
  5. a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks for the Potion Jar, which stores up to 100 potions. It leads to a quest in "Ars Nouveau", the Alchemical Sourcelink.[4]

Pedestals, the Apparatus and rituals

After Sourcestone, "Arcane Pedestals" quest asks for 8 Arcane Pedestals. That unlocks two paths: the Enchanting Apparatus and the Ritual Brazier.[4]

"Enchanting Apparatus" quest asks for the Apparatus and an Arcane Core. You place the core, put the Apparatus on top and surround it with pedestals.[4]

a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks for the Ritual Brazier. You light it with a Light spell. Each ritual then gets its own quest: a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Overgrowth), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Fertility), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Awakening), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Warping), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Restoration), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Scrying), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Summon Wilden), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Moonfall), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Disintegration), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Sunrise), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Burrowing), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Cloudshaping), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Binding), a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Challenge) and a quest in "Ars Nouveau" (Flight).[4]

Glyph quests

The rest of the chapter is a long list of one-glyph quests. Each one asks you to get a single glyph, for example a quest in "Ars Nouveau" for Glyph Cut or a quest in "Ars Nouveau" for Glyph Wither. They hang off three shared parent quests that my sources don't name, so use the Scribe's Table quest as your guide for how glyphs are unlocked.[4]

Other chapters

The Master Ball chapter has two quests that accept Ars Nouveau's Glyph Cut as one of several ways to cut Apricorns. The others are the Create saw, the Mekanism sawmill, the Oritech fragment forge and the PneumaticCraft assembly controller. For the glyph route, pick any spell form, add Cut and then Sensitive, so it works on dropped items.[4][10]

The ATM Star chapter has an "Ars Nouveau" quest quest that asks for a Source Gem. It leads to "Glyph of Wither" quest, which asks for the Wither glyph. The quest suggests Wither Skeleton Skulls and an Abjuration Essence, and says you might need more EXP if it doesn't work.[3]

Which Ars Nouveau config options matter?

3 parts

Good news: every option below that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default in this pack. The pack doesn't rebalance Ars Nouveau through its configs, so the numbers here are the standard ones. The files are the common config (gameplay) and the client config (visuals and HUD).[6][11]

Gameplay options (common config)

Wilden mobs, loot and spawns

Watch out: The Chimera's dive bomb is set to destroy blocks here, so don't fight it next to a base you care about.[6]

Client options

lights.lightsEnabled is false, so Ars Nouveau's dynamic lights are off. The touch light settings are at their defaults: lights.touchLightDuration is 8 ticks and lights.touchLightLuminance is 8. The pack also ships entity and item light lists, lights.entity_lights and lights.item_lights, but they only matter if you turn dynamic lights on.[11]

The HUD offsets are all at their defaults. The Mana Bar sits at overlays.xManaBar 0 and overlays.yManaBar 0. The spell name sits at overlays.xSpellName 10 and overlays.ySpellName 30. The tooltip sits at overlays.xTooltip 20 and overlays.yTooltip 0. Change these if the HUD overlaps another mod's.[11]

overlays.toggleSelectionHUD is true, so the Selection HUD is toggled rather than held. misc.glyphTooltips is true, so spell tooltips show glyphs instead of plain text.[11]

Tip: If you run shaders and something looks wrong, check these options. misc.disable_skyweave is for a broken sky, and misc.opaque_particles is for invisible particles. Both are false right now. misc.gui_transparency is true, and the config says to disable it if the book GUI crashes with Sodium derivatives.[11]

Unverified The sources don't show mod defaults for the true/false options or the lists, such as dynamic lights being off or the book not spawning on login. I can't confirm whether the pack changed any of those.
