Occultism is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.224.4. A ritual magic system centered around summonable spirits allows you to automate various tasks, store vast amounts of items, let demons mine in void dimensions, create powerful enchanted tools and jewelry, get support from familiars, and much much more. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Occultism?

2 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits, which the mod calls demons, from "The Other Place". Those spirits can automate tasks, store huge amounts of items, mine for you in void dimensions, and help you make enchanted tools and jewelry. You also get familiars for company. The mod is inspired by Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books, so if you like the idea of a magician who lets summoned servants do the real work, this one is for you.[1]

The pack ships Occultism 1.224.4.[2]

How you get started

You begin by breaking grass until you drop Demon's Dream Seeds, much like vanilla wheat seeds. Craft the seeds with a book to get the Dictionary Of Spirits, which is the mod's in-game guide. The pack also has a full Occultism quest chapter, starting with "Dreaming of Demons" quest, if you'd rather follow quests than read the book.[1][3]

Don't skip the Dictionary. The quests point out that you need it to craft several things in the pack, so you have to make it either way.[3]

Eating Demon's Dream gives you a chance at the Third Eye effect. It lets you see the Otherworld, and you need it to find and harvest certain progression items. The quests also mention that you can set the fruit on fire, which lets you skip finding most of those items.[3]

Where it fits in the ATM Star path

Occultism has its own entry in the ATM Star chapter. The quest "Occultism" quest asks for Demon's Dream Seeds, and several other ATM Star quests unlock after it. These are the Occultism items the path asks you to get:[4]

All of these are rituals, so learn the basics from the Occultism chapter first. That means Spiritfire conversions, chalk, bowls and Books of Binding.[3][4]

How do you get started with Occultism?

4 parts

Occultism is all about summoning spirits through rituals, and the quest chapter in this pack walks you through it in a sensible order. Here is that order, and why each step matters.[1][3]

Seeds and the Dictionary

Everything starts with Demon's Dream Seeds ("Dreaming of Demons" quest). The first quest asks you to get some Demon's Dream seeds.[3]

Next, make the Dictionary Of Spirits ("Little Book o' Demons" quest). It is the mod's guide book, with a quest-style guide inside, and you also need it to craft several things in the pack.[3]

This pack also adds a cloche recipe that grows Demon's Dream and gives the seeds back, so you can farm the fruit.[5]

The Third Eye and Spiritfire

Eating the fruit gives you a chance at the Third Eye effect, which lets you see Otherworld items ("Demon Fruit" quest). Eating fruit every time gets old, so later you can make Otherworld Goggles, which give the effect while equipped, even in a Curios slot ("Tools of the Trade: Spectral Goggles" quest).[3]

Spiritfire converts Overworld materials into Otherworld ones ("Spiritfire Conversions" quest). Andesite becomes Otherstone, which can be used to light a permanent Spiritfire. Oak saplings become Otherworld saplings, which you harvest with the Third Eye. Diamonds become Spirit Attuned Gem, which the quest says is used in several recipes you will need later on.[3]

The pack also has an Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus recipe for the gem, if you prefer that route.[5]

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_ocultas:spirit_attuned_gem

If you would rather track materials down than convert them, the Divination Rod can be attuned to a material and points toward the nearest one ("Tools of the Trade: Divination Rod" quest).[3]

Ritual gear

Chalk is the most important ritual item ("Preparing for a Ritual: Chalk" quest). To start with, white chalk is the easiest to get, so begin with Impure White Chalk. Throw it into Spiritfire to purify it, then draw with it on the ground. The Chalk Brush removes the drawings, and the quest says it is worth making.[3]

You also need bowls ("Preparing for a Ritual: Bowls" quest). Ordinary Sacrificial Bowl blocks hold the items a ritual needs. The Golden Ritual Bowl goes in the middle to activate the ritual, usually with a Book of Binding inside.[3]

Almost every summoning ritual needs candles ("Preparing for a Ritual: Candles" quest). The Butcher Knife gets you tallow from animals, though vanilla candles also work. Make a few Spirit Attuned Crystal too, since several rituals use them.[3]

Last is the Book of Binding: Foliot ("Books of Binding" quest). It tells the ritual which spirit to summon. You need Purified Ink, made by purifying black dye in Spiritfire. Alternatively, make an Book of Binding: Empty and dye it later.[3][5]

Your first ritual

"Our First Ritual" quest has you summon a Foliot Crusher, a demon that crushes items for you. The quest says you will need it to make some of the higher-level chalks ("Chalking It Up" quest).[3]

Per the quest, combine your unbound book with the Dictionary in a crafting grid to bind a demon to it. Then open the Pentacles tab in the Dictionary and pick Aviar's Circle. The eye icon in the corner builds an outline of the ritual in the world. Place 4 bowls (more for future rituals) within 8 blocks horizontally of the center bowl, put the required items on them, and drop your bound book into the golden bowl to start the ritual.[3]

How does Occultism work?

4 parts

Occultism is built around summoned spirits. You use rituals to call demons from "The Other Place", and they automate tasks, store large amounts of items and mine in void dimensions for you.[1]

Rituals and the central bowl

Every pentacle uses exactly one central bowl. The golden, dark golden, iesnium and dark iesnium sacrificial bowls, the Eldritch Chalice and the Celestial Chalice all carry that same tooltip: use exactly one in the pentacle.[6]

Forging reinforced deepslate works differently from other rituals. It is a service from Wild Spirits, so no spirit is bound to the finished item. You sacrifice the items and the Wild Spirit forges it for you.[6]

Automation with Books of Calling

Spirits do your chores through Books of Calling. In this pack, the Foliot versions are the Book of Calling: Foliot Transporter, Book of Calling: Foliot Farmer, Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack and Book of Calling: Foliot Janitor. The Djinni version is the Book of Calling: Djinni Machine Operator, made from a Book of Binding: Djinni (Bound). Each recipe is shown below.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: occultism:crafting/book_of_binding_empty

Dimensional mineshaft

The dimensional mineshaft discards any items it cannot store, so empty it regularly. You can do that by hand, with hoppers, or with a transporter spirit.[6]

  • Top: the lamp slot.[6]
  • Bottom: the ore slots.[6]
  • Any other side: all slots.[6]
Tip: The guide lists hoppers as one way to empty the mineshaft, and the bottom side gives access to the ore slots.[6]

Storage and other machines

A stable wormhole shows whether it is linked to a storage actuator. Its tooltip gives the linked position, or tells you it is not linked.[6]

The in-game guide gives short descriptions for several machines and tools:[6]

  • The Foliot miner is described as "Stone, stone and ores".[6]
  • The Marid miner is described as a rare resources miner.[6]
  • The dimensional battlefield is described as a spiritual mob killing simulator.[6]
  • The Ender Satchel is described as a portable ender chest.[6]
  • The storage remote is described as "Everything in your hands".[6]

Unverified The sources I have only list the guide page titles for most Occultism machines, so I can't confirm details such as the dimensional battlefield's fuel and redstone behaviour, the storage system's capacity, or the miners' output rates in this pack. No Occultism config files are available either, so any values you read elsewhere may not match this pack.

How do you progress through Occultism?

7 parts

Occultism in this pack is a quest-guided chain. The quest chapter walks you through summoning rituals, the chalk colours they unlock and the tools you need along the way. Here is the path in the order the quests lead you through it. Treat the early quests as a starting point, because the chapter says later rituals ask for more than the first ones do.[3]

Step 1: Seeds, fruit and the book

To get started, "Dreaming of Demons" quest asks for Demon's Dream Seeds. The next quest says that when you eat the Demon's Dream you have a chance to get the Third Eye effect, which lets you see into the Otherworld. "Little Book o' Demons" quest has you make the Dictionary Of Spirits, which the quest calls the guide book for the mod and which you also need to craft several things in the pack.[3]

The pack adds its own Cloche recipe that turns Demon's Dream Seeds into fruit and gives the seeds back, so you can farm them.[5]

Step 2: Otherworld materials

At this stage, "Spiritfire Conversions" quest points you to Spiritfire for the basic Otherworld materials. According to the quest, andesite converts to Otherstone, oak saplings convert to Otherworld saplings, and diamonds convert to Spirit Attuned Gem. A Divination Rod from "Tools of the Trade: Divination Rod" quest can help you locate these materials in the world, and you still need the Third Eye to harvest the Otherworld blocks.[3]

The pack also has an Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus recipe that makes a Spirit Attuned Gem.[5]

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_ocultas:spirit_attuned_gem

Step 3: Ritual prep and your first demon

Before the first ritual, the quests ask for four preparations: chalk and a Chalk Brush ("Preparing for a Ritual: Chalk" quest), bowls ("Preparing for a Ritual: Bowls" quest), candles and Spirit Attuned Crystal ("Preparing for a Ritual: Candles" quest), and a Book of Binding ("Books of Binding" quest). The candles quest says the Butcher Knife can get you tallow to make candles, and that vanilla candles can also work.[3]

"Our First Ritual" quest summons a Foliot crusher. For now, the quest has you place 4 sacrificial bowls (it says later rituals need more) within an 8 block horizontal radius of the central bowl. Once you place the bound book in the golden bowl, the ritual starts. The Foliot is there to crush materials for your next chalks, which "Chalking It Up" quest covers.[3]

Step 4: The chalk ladder

The next rituals in the chapter lead to chalk colours and utility items. Eziveus' Spectral Compulsion is the ritual behind Nature Paste, which the Green Chalk quest ("Green Chalk" quest) asks for, and Research Fragment Dust, which the Lime Chalk quest ("Lime Chalk" quest) asks for. It also leads to the Otherworld Goggles ("Tools of the Trade: Spectral Goggles" quest), which the quest says give the Third Eye effect, even in a Curios slot.[3]

Strigeor's Higher Binding is the ritual behind Gray Paste for the Gray Chalk quest ("Gray Chalk" quest), and it comes before the Soul Gem ("Empty Soul Gem" quest) and the first satchel ("Tools of the Trade: Ritual Satchel" quest). Ihagan's Enthrallment is where the Orange Chalk quest ("Orange Chalk" quest) gets Cursed Honey. Odus' Open Convocation is where the Pink Chalk quest ("Pink Chalk" quest) gets Demonic Meat.[3]

Ritual (occultism)

Recipe id: occultism:ritual/craft_ritual_satchel_t1

Step 5: Iesnium

The Infused Pickaxe ("Tools of the Trade: Infused Pickaxe" quest) comes after the goggles and Strigeor's Higher Binding, and you need it to mine Iesnium Ore ("Iesnium: Ore of the Otherworld" quest). The ore is in the Nether and looks like Netherrack unless you have the Third Eye. Attune a Divination Rod to Netherrack to track it down. Your Foliot crusher can double the ingots you get per raw ore.[3]

Ritual (occultism)

Recipe id: occultism:ritual/craft_infused_pickaxe

Once you have ingots, the quest suggests making the Iesnium Pickaxe ("The Otherworld Pickaxe" quest). It says this pickaxe mines Iesnium like the Infused Pickaxe but lasts a lot longer. In this pack, blasting recipes turn Iesnium ore, raw Iesnium or Iesnium dust into ingots.[3][5]

Step 6: Afrit, red and black chalk

Kandar's Opened Conjure ("Kandar's Opened Conjure" quest) summons an Afrit. Without Red Chalk you can only summon an unbound one, which cannot be controlled and will be violent. The Red Chalk quest ("Red Chalk" quest) asks for Afrit Essence, and that ritual needs a live cow sacrifice.[3]

The quest calls Sevira's Permanent Confinement ("Sevira's Permanent Confinement" quest) the third tier of Infusion Rituals. The Black Chalk quest ("Black Chalk" quest) says it can combine several Wither materials and some Netherite into three Witherite Dust. After it, the quest book offers the Artisanal Ritual Satchel, which the quest says instantly places everything for the ritual ("Tools of the Trade: Artisanal Ritual Satchel" quest), and the Iesnium Ritual Bowl ("Iesnium Ritual Bowl" quest).[3]

Side branches: storage and mining

The dimensional storage quest ("Demonic Magical Storage!" quest) asks for the Dimensional Crystal Matrix and a storage actuator. The quest says that by default it has 128 slots, each holding up to 16 stacks of an item, and that items with NBT data don't stack and each take a whole slot.[3]

Ritual (occultism)

Recipe id: occultism:ritual/craft_dimensional_matrix

Per the quest, stabilizers raise the capacity ("Upgrading Our Magical Storage" quest). They must point at the matrix, not the base, and can be up to 5 blocks away with a clear line of sight. For remote access, the quest names the Stable Wormhole and the Storage Accessor ("Remote Access" quest).[3]

"Demon Mining" quest leads to the Dimensional Mineshaft. The quest says you place a mining demon confined to a lamp inside it, and that higher tiers work faster and have a higher chance at mining Iesnium for you.[3]

Ritual (occultism)

Recipe id: occultism:ritual/craft_dimensional_mineshaft

Watch out: The quest says the Mineshafts do not auto-export on their own. You need to extract items using hoppers, Transporting Demons or another method such as item pipes, because it voids any items over its storage limit.[3]

How does Occultism work with other mods?

4 parts

Occultism doesn't sit on its own in this pack. A handful of its items are used in recipes from other mods, and some of those recipes were added or changed by the pack. Here are the connections I can confirm from the pack's recipes and quests.[4][5]

Ars Nouveau (via Ars Ocultas)

The Ars Ocultas recipes are where Ars Nouveau and Occultism meet most directly. The Sacrificial Altar is made at an Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus, and it needs the Golden Ritual Bowl. The pack changed this recipe.[5]

Sacrificial AltarChanged by the pack

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_ocultas:altar

The Spirit Attuned Gem has an Ars Nouveau route too. It uses Demon's Dream Essence alongside Ars Nouveau essences and a Source Gem. This one is the mod's own recipe, not a pack change. The Spiritfire quest gives a different route, where diamonds thrown into Spiritfire turn into Spirit Attuned Gems.[3][5]

Two imbuement recipes also use that gem. One turns gold into Silver Ingot and the other turns silver into Gold Ingot. The pack changed both.[5]

The ATM Star and other endgame items

Several pack-added recipes for big progression items take an Occultism ingredient. That's why the ATM Star chapter has Occultism quests such as "Dragon Familiar in a Creature Catcher" quest, "Stable Wormhole" quest and "Witherite Dust" quest.[4][5]

Allthemodium and Theurgy

The ritual for the Eldritch Ancient Miner was added by the pack. It uses Piglich Heart and Unobtainium Pickaxe from Allthemodium, along with Occultism's own miner and binding items.[5]

The pack also gives Iesnium Ingot a Theurgy incubation recipe, so you can make it there as well.[5]

Which All the Mons quests use Occultism?

4 parts

Almost all of the Occultism questing happens in the Occultism chapter, which takes you from your first seeds to the endgame chalks. What follows is what each quest asks for at the point you reach it. There is also one Occultism quest in The ATM Star chapter, "Occultism" quest, which asks for Demon's Dream Seeds.[3][4]

Getting started

  1. "Dreaming of Demons" quest kicks things off by asking for Demon's Dream Seeds.[3]
  2. "Demon Fruit" quest asks for Demon's Dream. The quest says that eating one gives you a chance at the Third Eye effect, which lets you see Otherworld items.[3]
  3. "Little Book o' Demons" quest asks for the Dictionary Of Spirits, which the quest calls the guide book for Occultism. It says you'll need it to craft several things in the pack.[3]
  4. "Spiritfire Conversions" quest covers Spiritfire conversions and asks for Otherstone, Unstable Otherworld Sapling and Spirit Attuned Gem. It unlocks after a quest called The Flames of The Otherworld.[3]
  5. "Tools of the Trade: Divination Rod" quest asks for the Divination Rod, which the quest presents as a way to locate Otherworld materials.[3]

Preparing your first ritual

Four quests unlock directly after The Basics of Rituals: Books of Binding, the chalk quest, the bowls quest and the Butcher's Knife quest. The first ritual quest lists the Books, chalk and bowls quests as prerequisites, plus the candles quest, which comes after the Butcher's Knife quest.[3]

Once those are done, "Our First Ritual" quest asks for Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) plus iron, silver, gold and copper ingots. The quest describes it as the summoning of your first Foliot Crusher demon, and says to place 4 bowls to start (or more for future rituals).[3]

Storage, tools and Iesnium

Tip: The Otherworld Goggles give you the Third Eye effect even in a Curios slot, so you can stop eating fruit every time you need to see Otherworld items.[3]

The chalk and ritual chain

The rest of the chapter is mostly one quest per chalk color, each tied to a higher-tier ritual. Several of the ritual quests (Eziveus' Spectral Compulsion, Strigeor's Higher Binding, Ihagan's Enthrallment, Tibira's Attraction) can only be named by title here.[3]
