Deeper and Darker is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.4.1. A Minecraft mod which features more blocks, items, armors, and hidden mysteries to complement the Deep Dark biome. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Deeper and Darker?

3 parts

Deeper and Darker builds on the vanilla Deep Dark. It adds a new dimension called the Otherside, with new biomes, a structure that is home to the warden, and over a hundred new blocks. This pack includes version 1.4.1 of the mod for NeoForge 1.21.1.[1][2]

Biomes to explore in the Otherside include the deeplands, the echoing forest, the overcast columns and the blooming caverns. The mod also adds 8 new mobs, including a miniboss, plus a warden set of armor and tools, an upgrade to the elytra and the sculk transmitter.[1]

Who it's for

This mod is for players who want an endgame-style adventure built around the warden. The pack's quest chapter starts you off by killing the Warden. Later quests point you to the Ancient City, where the Warden Upgrade Template is found in chests. With it you can upgrade from Netherite to Warden gear.[3]

Getting into the Otherside

Killing the Warden is the way in. It can drop a Heart of the Deep, and you use that on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open your portal to the Otherside. Nothing can be inside the portal, and that includes Sculk, or it won't activate.[1][3][4]

The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, which you need for crafting other items. The quest chapter points out that Reinforced Echo Shard is a crafted item that uses Warden Carapaces.[3]

The ATM Star path

The Heart of the Deep also matters beyond this mod. The quest "Heart of the Deep" quest in the ATM Star chapter says the heart can be used for the ATM Star. It comes after the Deeper and Darker quests, so beating the Warden is a required step on that path.[4]

Tip: Bloom Berries are the only food source in the Otherside, according to the pack's quest. Bring your own food, then look for them in the blooming caverns.[3]

How do you get started with Deeper and Darker?

5 parts

Deeper and Darker adds a new dimension called the Otherside. In this pack the quest chapter for the mod picks up after you kill the Warden, so here is the order I'd go in.[1][3]

Step 1: Kill the Warden and take its heart

To get into the Otherside you kill the Warden and use its heart. When a Warden dies it has a chance to drop a Heart of the Deep, and you use it on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open your portal. Nothing can be inside the portal frame, and that includes sculk, or it won't activate. The quest "Heart of the Deep" quest covers this.[1][3][4]

The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, and both are needed for crafting. The Heart of the Deep matters beyond the portal too, because it can be used for the ATM Star.[3][4]

Step 2: Craft a Reinforced Echo Shard

Your first real crafted item is the Reinforced Echo Shard ("Reinforced Echo Shard" quest). The Warden usually drops more than one carapace, and the easiest way to find Echo Shards is looting Ancient Cities.[3][5]

Tip: If you're short on phantom membrane, remember that phantoms spawn once you haven't slept for a few days, and more restless nights means more phantoms.[3]

Step 3: Get a Warden Upgrade Template

Upgrading gear needs the Smithing Template ("Warden Upgrade Template" quest). You find these in chests in Ancient Cities, and you can then duplicate them. The pack changed the duplication recipe, so use the one below instead of what you may remember from the mod.[3][5]

Step 4: Upgrade Netherite to Warden gear

With a template and a Reinforced Echo Shard you smith Netherite gear into Warden gear. Each armor piece has 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection than its Netherite counterpart, but it loses the knockback resistance ("Warden Armor" quest).[3][5]

The Warden Sword has 9 attack damage, and the Warden Pickaxe is Tier 5. The tools keep Netherite's speed and tier and only gain attack damage ("Warden Tools" quest).[3][6]

Good to know in the Otherside

  • Bloom Berries are the only food source in the Otherside. They grow on Glowing Vines on the roof of the Blooming Caverns, and you pick them with a right click.[3]
  • Once you've cleared the Warden, the Sonorous Staff is a good next craft. It needs a Heart of the Deep, plus Soul Crystals from the Stalker and Sculk Bones from Shattereds ("Sonorous Staff" quest).[3][5]

How does Deeper and Darker work?

5 parts

Deeper and Darker is about the Deep Dark rather than machines and automation. It adds a dimension called the Otherside, with new biomes, a structure, over a hundred new blocks, a warden set of armor and tools, and 8 new mobs including a miniboss.[1]

Getting into the Otherside

The way in is through the Warden: you kill it and use its heart. The in-game advancement text agrees, telling you to slay the Warden and take its heart, and describing the Otherside as the darkness deep below the bedrock.[1][7]

Once you're in, the mod's advancements point you at the main goals: explore all Otherside biomes, find an Ancient City, and explore the depths for a temple. The temple is the home of the Warden, and the project page warns you to be careful when breaking the ancient vases so you don't wake an ancient lurker.[1][7]

Upgrading gear with smithing templates

Gear upgrades go through smithing templates. The Warden upgrade takes netherite armor, weapons or tools in the base slot and a Reinforced Echo Shard in the additions slot. The Resonarium upgrade takes iron armor, weapons or tools in the base slot and a Resonarium Plate in the additions slot.[7]

There's an advancement for reinforcing an Echo Shard, which ties in with the Warden upgrade. A full set of Warden Armor has its own advancement too.[7]

Enchantments

The mod adds its own enchantments, and Reverberation and Volume are both built around sonic blasts. Here's what each one does:[7]

  • Catalysis spreads sculk when mobs are killed.[7]
  • Reverberation increases the range of sonic blasts.[7]
  • Volume increases the damage from sonic blasts.[7]
  • Sculk Smite increases damage against sculk mobs such as the Shattered and the Warden.[7]

Navigation and the Sculk Transmitter

The Ancient Compass is crafted from a Warden Carapace and a vanilla compass in this pack. This is the recipe:[5]

The project page highlights the sculk transmitter, and it has its own advancement. Its tooltip shows a location as coordinates, in the form "Located at" followed by the position.[1][7]

Crystallized Amber has a tooltip saying it contains a Sculk Leech.[7]

Stone and wood building chains

Building blocks in this pack craft in short chains. Smooth Gloomslate becomes Cut Gloomslate, and from there you can make its slab, stairs and wall. Smooth Sculk Stone and Cut Sculk Stone work the same way.[5]

Bloom wood starts with Bloom Planks, which the pack lets you make from any of the bloom stems. From the planks you can craft the boat, door, fence, sign and the rest of the usual wood set.[5]

How do you progress through Deeper and Darker?

4 parts

The Deeper and Darker questline is short and clear: kill the Warden, get into the Otherside, then upgrade your Netherite into Warden gear. The side branch for the Sonorous Staff and Soul Elytra comes from the mobs you meet down there.[3]

The main path

  1. Kill the Warden. The "Heart of the Deep" quest quest comes right after that. The Warden drops several items, and the most important is the Heart of the Deep. It also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, which you'll need for crafting.[3]
  2. Use the Heart of the Deep on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open your portal to the Otherside. Nothing can block the portal frame, and that includes Sculk. The heart is a chance drop, and it is also used for the ATM Star.[3][4]
  3. Visit an Ancient City and look in its chests for the Smithing Template ("Warden Upgrade Template" quest).[3]
  4. Craft a Reinforced Echo Shard ("Reinforced Echo Shard" quest). Phantom Membranes are the easiest part to get, since Phantoms show up when you skip sleeping. Echo Shards are easiest to loot in Ancient Cities, and the Warden usually drops more than one Carapace.[3][5]
  5. Take your Netherite gear to a smithing table and upgrade it to Warden gear.[3][5]

Once you have one template you can duplicate it with 7 Diamonds and a Sculk Block. The pack changes the template's duplication recipe, so use the one below rather than the mod default.[3][5]

Warden tier

Warden gear is a direct upgrade over Netherite. Each piece is a smithing upgrade using a template, a Reinforced Echo Shard and the matching Netherite item. The pack's Basic Armor chapter also has a Warden Armor quest ("Warden Armor" quest), which asks why you'd upgrade Netherite to Allthemodium or anything else when Warden Armor is an option.[3][5][8]

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: deeperdarker:warden_chestplate_smithing

Every Warden piece follows the same smithing pattern, swapping in its Netherite counterpart.

Resonarium tier

The pack's Basic Tools chapter also lists Resonarium gear. The Resonarium Pickaxe sits in the Tier 4 group, one step below the Warden pickaxe's Tier 5, and the Resonarium Sword sits in the 7 Attack Damage group, compared with 9 for the Warden Sword. Both are made at a smithing table from a diamond tool, a Resonarium Plate and a smithing template.[5][6]

Side branch: Staff and Elytra

Both of these quests come after you meet the Stalker, Shattered and Sculk Snapper. Soul Crystals drop from the Stalker, Sculk Bones from Shattered, and Soul Dust from Sculk Snappers or Sculk Leeches.[3]

The Sonorous Staff ("Sonorous Staff" quest) lets you fire the Warden's Sonic Blast. Hold right click to charge it, then release. It has a slight cooldown and it has durability, so use it carefully. You'll need a Heart of the Deep from the Warden, 2 Soul Crystals and 2 Sculk Bones.[3]

How does Deeper and Darker work with other mods?

5 parts

Deeper and Darker mostly plugs into the rest of the pack through processing recipes: Create crushing, Mekanism sawing, Productive Trees sawmills and Farmer's Delight cutting. There are also a couple of unusual crafts that use its items. Here's everything I could confirm from the pack's recipes.[5]

Create: crushing Otherside ores

The mod's Create crushing recipes for ores embedded in Sculk Stone and Gloomslate are changed by the pack. Crushing gives you back Cobbled Sculk Stone or Cobbled Gloomslate, plus a Nugget of Experience, plus the ore's product.[5]

Copper, gold and iron give you the matching clump: Copper Clump, Gold Clump or Iron Clump. Coal, diamond, emerald, lapis and redstone give you the plain vanilla item instead, such as Diamond or Redstone.[5]

Echo and Bloom wood plug into several wood-processing machines, so you don't need to hand-craft planks.[5]

Quests

One cross-mod link I could confirm in the quest book is in the Basic Tools chapter. The quest a quest in "Basic Tools" lists the Resonarium Pickaxe as one of several pickaxe options, alongside pickaxes from other mods.[6]

Which All the Mons quests use Deeper and Darker?

4 parts

Deeper and Darker has its own quest chapter in the pack, called "Deeper and Darker". Its items also show up in three other chapters: Basic Tools, Basic Armor and The ATM Star. The main chapter takes you from the Warden fight through gear upgrades, with a pile of biome-exploration quests on the side.[3][4][6][8]

The Warden path

This is the backbone of the chapter, in the order the quests unlock.[3]

  1. "Heart of the Deep" quest comes after killing the Warden. You hand in Heart of the Deep, which you use on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open the portal to the Otherside. Nothing can block the portal frame or it won't work. The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards.[3]
  2. "Warden Upgrade Template" quest unlocks after the Otherside and visiting an Ancient City. You hand in Smithing Template. The quest says you find these in Ancient City chests, and that they can be duplicated.[3]
  3. "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest unlocks after the Otherside and killing the Warden. You hand in Reinforced Echo Shard, a crafted item. The quest text points you to Phantom Membrane, Echo Shards (easiest from Ancient Cities) and Warden Carapaces.[3]
  4. "Warden Armor" quest needs both the template and the shard quests done. You hand in the full set: Warden Helmet, Warden Chestplate, Warden Leggings and Warden Boots.[3]
  5. "Warden Tools" quest and "Warden Weapons" quest have the same two prerequisites. Tools accepts Warden Pickaxe, Warden Shovel or Warden Hoe. Weapons accepts Warden Sword or Warden Axe.[3]

Warden Armor is a direct upgrade to Netherite, with 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection per piece, but no Knockback Resistance. The tools keep Netherite's tier and speed and only gain attack damage, and the quest notes the Warden Hoe out-damages every vanilla hoe. The sword and axe get 1 Heart more damage and extra durability.[3]

Late-game gadgets

Biome and block quests

The rest of the chapter is a set of collect-one-item quests, each unlocked by a biome quest. The biome quests themselves aren't in the sources I have, so I can't say what they ask for.[3]

What changed in Deeper and Darker between versions?

3 parts

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Deeper and Darker 1.4.1. The mod was first included in All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier. Here are the mod releases that matter for the version you are playing.[2]

Version 1.4.1

This is a minor update for v1.4. It fixes a server crash caused by improperly generated Crystallized Amber blocks. If you run a server, this is the fix to know about.[9]

Version 1.4

This was a big update after a long wait. It brings many Otherside improvements along with new blocks, items, effects and enchantments. Since 1.4.1 is a small fix on top of it, these changes are part of the version in the pack.[2][9][10]

  • Sculk Transmitters can now be dyed. They also got a major update: they can link to other modded containers instead of being limited to vanilla storage blocks.[10]
  • A new Ancient Compass points you to Ancient Temples.[10]
  • There is an improved way of obtaining Resonarium armor and tools.[10]
  • The Soronous Staff gets new enchantments.[10]
  • More decorative and functional blocks were added, including the Lite block, which emits light and can be crafted into other light-emitting blocks with unique textures.[10]

Otherside overhaul

The Otherside dimension was fully overhauled in 1.4. Expect much more open space, uniform biome distribution and improved natural features.[10]

Portal generation changed too. When you travel between dimensions, a new Otherside portal should now give you a more exposed spawn instead of a cramped location. There is also a transition screen when you travel between the Otherside and the Overworld, similar to the one for the Nether.[10]

Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for this mod, so any changes the pack itself made to Deeper and Darker across its releases are unverified.
