What is Occultism?

2 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits, which the mod calls demons, from "The Other Place". Those spirits can automate tasks, store huge amounts of items, mine in void dimensions, and help you make enchanted tools and jewelry. You also get support from familiars. The mod is inspired by Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books. This pack includes Occultism 1.224.4.[1][2]

Who it is for

It suits you if you like learning a magic system step by step and don't mind setting up rituals. The mod guides you itself. You get seeds by breaking grass, the way you would for vanilla wheat seeds, then craft them with a book to make the Dictionary of Spirits. After that you follow the in-game guide.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack's magic quest chain follows the same path as the mod's own guide. It starts with Demon's Dream Seeds and Demon's Dream in "Occultism" quest. Next come Otherstone and Unstable Otherworld Sapling in "Cleansed In Fire" quest. Then you set up ritual gear such as Sacrificial Bowl, Golden Ritual Bowl and Spirit Attuned Crystal in "Pentacle Components" quest.[3]

The chain continues with Otherworld Ashes and impure chalks in "Basic Chalks" quest. It then moves on to Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) in "Your First Ritual" quest, and to Crushed End Stone and Impure Purple Chalk in "More About Rituals & Pentacles" quest.[3]

After that, Occultism items appear in several other parts of the questbook:[4][5][6][7]

Tip: Start with the Dictionary of Spirits and follow its pages in order. The pack's quests follow the same progression, so you can use them as a checklist.[1][3]

How do you get started with Occultism?

7 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod, and in this pack the quest book walks you through it in a set order. The first chain of Occultism quests sits in the general magic chapter, and each quest comes after the one before it. Here is that order and why each step matters.[1][3]

Demon's Dream seeds and fruit

The first quest, "Occultism" quest, asks for Demon's Dream Seeds and Demon's Dream. This pack adds its own ways to get them. A crook used on sand can drop the seeds, and the pack adds cloche recipes that grow the fruit from the seeds on dirt. It also adds cloche recipes for Rich Soil and four higher tiers of special soil.[3][8]

Otherstone and the unstable sapling

Next, "Cleansed In Fire" quest asks for Otherstone and an Unstable Otherworld Sapling. It also has an observation task. Otherstone has several routes in the pack: spirit fire, spirit trade, crystallizing dust, and smelting Othercobblestone. Here are two of them, plus the sapling.[3][8]

Bowls and the attuned crystal

"Pentacle Components" quest covers your ritual hardware: the Sacrificial Bowl, the Golden Ritual Bowl and a Spirit Attuned Crystal. It also asks for a skeleton skull and a wither skeleton skull. The Golden Ritual Bowl is a central bowl, so use exactly one in a pentacle.[3][9]

Ashes and chalk

"Basic Chalks" quest wants Otherworld Ashes, Impure White Chalk and Impure Yellow Chalk. The ashes come from a spirit fire recipe. Impure White Chalk can be crafted in two shaped ways, or made with Create compacting from Burnt Otherstone and ashes. Yellow chalk is made from white chalk.[3][8]

Your first bound spirit book

"Your First Ritual" quest asks for a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) and has an observation task. The pack includes a Create filling recipe that turns an unbound Book of Binding: Foliot into the bound version with Spirit Solution. Several rituals in the pack, such as the Foliot Lumberjack one below, use this bound book as an ingredient.[3][8]

Purple chalk

The last quest in this chain, "More About Rituals & Pentacles" quest, asks for Crushed End Stone and Impure Purple Chalk. Purple chalk is made from white chalk, so keep some spare.[3][8]

Where to go next

After that, you can try the Foliot Lumberjack. "Demon Tree Farming" quest in the resource generation chapter asks for a Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack, and the pack has a summoning ritual for it.[4][8]

How does Occultism work?

6 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic system built around summonable spirits. You use them to automate tasks, store large amounts of items and let demons mine in void dimensions. Here is how the pieces behave in this pack: rituals, spirit jobs, the dimensional machines and the storage setup.[1]

Rituals and the pentacle

Every central bowl block carries the same note: use exactly one in the pentacle. That covers the Iesnium and golden sacrificial bowls (including their dark versions) and the Eldritch and Celestial chalices.[9]

The pack makes rituals faster. rituals.ritualDurationMultiplier is set to 0.5 here, while the mod default is 1. Values below 1.0 speed rituals up.[10]

Tip: Forging Reinforced Deepslate works differently from most rituals. It is a service done by Wild Spirits, so you sacrifice the items and no spirit gets bound to the finished item.[9]

Spirit jobs and automation

Bound spirits are your automation. A Book of Calling is crafted from a bound Book of Binding, and each calling book sets one job. The pack's recipes include these job books: Book of Calling: Foliot Janitor, Book of Calling: Foliot Farmer, Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack, Book of Calling: Foliot Transporter and Book of Calling: Djinni Machine Operator.[8]

Crusher spirits

The crusher jobs scale with spirit tier. The pack keeps the mod defaults for all four. Each tier makes at most 1 recipe per operation, and the time multiplier is applied to each recipe's time, so a lower number means a shorter time.[10]

  • Foliot Crusher (tier 1): output x1, time x2.[10]
  • Djinni Crusher (tier 2): output x1.5, time x1.[10]
  • Afrit Crusher (tier 3): output x2, time x0.5.[10]
  • Marid Crusher (tier 4): output x3, time x0.3.[10]

Dimensional Mineshaft

The Dimensional Mineshaft discards any items it cannot store, so empty it regularly, either by hand, with hoppers or with a transporter spirit. What each side reaches: the top goes to the lamp slot, the bottom goes to the ore slots, and every other side goes to all slots.[9]

Miner enchantments are allowed in this pack: Efficiency, Fortune and Silk Touch are all enabled through items.minerEfficiency, items.minerFortune and items.minerSilk. items.minerOutputBeforeBreak is false.[10]

Dimensional Battlefield

The book calls the Dimensional Battlefield a spiritual mob killing simulator. Processing time is calculated from the entity's life using items.butcherLifeMultiplier, which is 20 in the pack. Each advance has a chance to damage the weapon, set by items.butcherHurtChance at 0.03999999910593033.[9][10]

Storage and wormholes

A Stable Wormhole links to a storage actuator. Its tooltip shows the linked position, or tells you it is not linked.[9]

The pack changes the Stabilized Storage Actuator. storage.stabilizedControllerStabilizers is 7 here, while the mod default is 8. It is the number of tier 5 stabilizers in the actuator.[10]

The Entity Wormhole's random teleport can reach up to 4,096 blocks, set by items.maxDistanceRTP. It makes at most 99 attempts to find a safe spot, set by items.maxTryRTP.[10]

How do you progress through Occultism?

4 parts

Occultism progression in this pack is driven by quests in a few chapters. The main chain lives in the magic chapter and takes you from growing your first plant to binding your first spirit book. Later quests in other chapters then build on that with resource generation, storage and endgame crafting. The quests have no titles in the pack data, so I'll describe each one by what it asks you to hand in.[3][4][6][7]

Stage 1: the magic chapter chain

These six quests unlock one after another, so you can follow them in order.[3]

  1. "Occultism" quest asks for Demon's Dream Seeds and Demon's Dream. The pack added several cloche recipes that grow the fruit from the seeds on dirt, on rich soil and on the Just Dire Things goo soils. It also added a crook recipe that can drop the seeds from sand.[3][8]
  2. "Cleansed In Fire" quest wants Otherstone and Unstable Otherworld Sapling, plus an observation task. Otherstone can come from spirit fire on andesite, a spirit trade with any stone, smelting Othercobblestone, or crystallizing otherstone dust. The unstable sapling comes from spirit fire on an oak sapling.[3][8]
  3. "Pentacle Components" quest covers your ritual setup. It asks for a Sacrificial Bowl, a Golden Ritual Bowl, a Spirit Attuned Crystal, and both a skeleton skull and a wither skeleton skull.[3]
  4. "Basic Chalks" quest asks for Otherworld Ashes, Impure White Chalk and Impure Yellow Chalk. The ashes come from spirit fire on otherworld logs.[3][8]
  5. "Your First Ritual" quest wants a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound), plus an observation task. You can fill a Book of Binding: Foliot with Spirit Solution using Create's filling, or convert a Foliot Book of Calling back into a bound book.[3][8]
  6. "More About Rituals & Pentacles" quest closes the chain by asking for Crushed End Stone and Impure Purple Chalk.[3]

Here are the in-pack recipes for the crafted steps in that chain.[8]

Stage 2: Foliot work and the mineshaft

The resource generation chapter has two Occultism quests. "Demon Tree Farming" quest asks for a Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack. You can get it from a summoning ritual, or by combining a bound Foliot book with a metal axe in the crafting grid. "Spirit Mining" quest asks for a Dimensional Mineshaft, which is made with a ritual that needs a bound Djinni book.[4][8]

Stage 3: storage and the stabilizer tiers

"Occultism Storage" quest is the storage quest. It wants a Dimensional Storage Actuator, any one of the Tier 1 to Tier 4 stabilizers, a Stable Wormhole and a Storage Accessor. You only need one stabilizer tier to complete it, but each tier is a ritual upgrade of the one before. The ritual also asks for a stronger bound spirit book at each step: Foliot for Tier 1, Djinni for Tier 2, Afrit for Tier 3 and Marid for Tier 4.[6][8]

Stage 4: the Trinity Gem

The last Occultism quest I could find is "Mek Haters Unite" quest in the world engine tier 5 chapter. It asks for a Trinity Gem together with an Oritech enchantment catalyst block. The gem is made by a ritual that needs a Soul Gem and the Afrit, Cruelty and Marid essences.[7][8]

How does Occultism work with other mods?

5 parts

Occultism doesn't sit alone in this pack. Its items show up in recipes and quests from Create, Ars Nouveau, Immersive Engineering, Just Dire Things, Chicken Roost and more. Here's what the in-pack recipes and quests actually confirm.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

Create and Occult Engineering

The biggest group of crossover recipes comes from Occult Engineering, which pairs Occultism with Create. Its key product is Spirit Solution, which Create can make from Demon's Dream, Otherworld Essence or Demon's Dream Seeds.[8]

Mixing (create)

Spirit Solution is the key ingredient for the rest of these recipes. Create filling recipes use it to bind the Afrit, Djinni, Foliot and Marid books, and Create compacting recipes use it to make the impure brass, copper and zinc chalks.[8]

From there, Occultism rituals produce the Mechanical Chamber, the three mechanical upgrades (Afrit, Djinni and Marid) and the Otherworld Detector. A simple crafting recipe also gives you the Otherworldly Engineer's Goggles.[8]

Ars Nouveau

The Ars Ocultas recipes link Occultism with Ars Nouveau. The Sacrificial Altar recipe is changed by the pack, and so are the two transmutation recipes that convert between gold and silver. The Spirit Attuned Gem recipe is the mod's own, and it uses Ars Nouveau essences and a Source Gem.[8]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Occultism?

2 parts

Occultism shows up in five quest chapters in this pack. The main questline is in the general_magic chapter, and the other four chapters each have a quest that asks for Occultism items. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so I describe them by what they ask for.[3][4][5][6][7]

general_magic: the main Occultism chain

This chapter is a straight line of six quests, and each one unlocks after the one before it. Here's the order.[3]

  1. Quest "Occultism" quest is the first in the chain. It asks for Demon's Dream Seeds and Demon's Dream.[3]
  2. Quest "Cleansed In Fire" quest has an observation task. It also asks for Otherstone and Unstable Otherworld Sapling.[3]
  3. Quest "Pentacle Components" quest asks for Golden Ritual Bowl, Sacrificial Bowl and Spirit Attuned Crystal. It also asks for a skeleton skull and a wither skeleton skull, plus one more item task that the pack file doesn't name.[3]
  4. Quest "Basic Chalks" quest asks for Otherworld Ashes, Impure White Chalk and Impure Yellow Chalk.[3]
  5. Quest "Your First Ritual" quest asks for Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) and has an observation task.[3]
  6. Quest "More About Rituals & Pentacles" quest finishes the chain. It asks for Crushed End Stone and Impure Purple Chalk.[3]

Other chapters that use Occultism

Tip: The Spirit Attuned Crystal is asked for in both the general_magic chain and the gearing_up quest, so one crystal task shows up in two places.[3][5]

Which Occultism config options matter?

6 parts

Good news first: in the server config, only two options are marked as changed from the mod default, and those are the ones worth knowing about. Everything else listed below is set to the mod default.[10]

What the pack changed

  • rituals.ritualDurationMultiplier is set to 0.5 here, while the mod default is 1. Values below 1.0 speed rituals up, so rituals run faster in this pack. If you edit it yourself, use a preceding 0 for values below 1.0, otherwise the config system resets the value to 1.0.[10]
  • storage.stabilizedControllerStabilizers is set to 7 here, while the mod default is 8. It is the number of tier 5 stabilizers in the stabilized storage actuator, and the option's own comment warns that it does not change the recipe automatically.[10]

Storage actuator limits

The storage actuator values are all the mod defaults. storage.controllerMaxItemTypes is 128 slots, and storage.controllerMaxTotalItemCount is 256,000 items in total.[10]

Each stabilizer adds to both limits. The lowest tier adds 64 item types through storage.stabilizerTier1AdditionalMaxItemTypes and 512,000 total items through storage.stabilizerTier1AdditionalMaxTotalItemCount.[10]

The top tier adds 1,024 item types through storage.stabilizerTier5AdditionalMaxItemTypes and 8,192,000 total items through storage.stabilizerTier5AdditionalMaxTotalItemCount.[10]

storage.unlinkWormholeOnBreak is false. When it is true, breaking the wormhole unlinks it so it cannot work as a cheaper Storage Accessor.[10]

Ritual toggles and cast times

The clear weather, day, night, rain and thunder rituals are all enabled, through options such as rituals.enableClearWeatherRitual, rituals.enableDayTimeRitual and rituals.enableThunderWeatherRitual. The cast times below are in ticks and are all the mod defaults.[10]

Spirit crushers

The crusher tiers also use the mod defaults. Output multiplier and time multiplier by tier are listed below.[10]

  • Foliot: output 1, time 2.[10]
  • Djinni: output 1.5, time 1.[10]
  • Afrit: output 2, time 0.5.[10]
  • Marid: output 3, time 0.3.[10]

Dimensional Mineshaft miners

The miner spirits are set in the startup config and also match the mod defaults. Durability is how many mining operations a spirit can do before breaking, and max mining time is how long one operation takes. The Foliot miner has 1,000 durability and a max mining time of 400. The Djinni miner has 400 and 300, the Afrit miner 800 and 200, and the Marid miner 1,600 and 100. The ancient eldritch miner has 3,200 durability and a max mining time of just 15. Every miner gets 1 block per operation.[11]

The miner keys look like dimensional_mineshaft.miner_marid_master.durability and dimensional_mineshaft.miner_ancient_eldritch.maxMiningTime. Enchanted miners are allowed to benefit from Efficiency, Fortune and Silk Touch through items.minerEfficiency, items.minerFortune and items.minerSilk, all set to true.[10][11]

Divination rod and client options

items.anyOreDivinationRod is false in this pack, so the Divining Rod is not allowed to attune to any ore.[10]

On the client side, misc.divinationRodScanRange is 129 blocks, and the option warns that going too high can cause lag. misc.divinationRodHighlightAllResults is false. If you turn it on and the game lags, switch it back off. The storage controller shows 4 rows at a time through misc.storageRows, and you can raise it up to 9.[12]

Tip: If the red chalk glyph is hard to see because of color blindness, the option's comment recommends changing visual.redChalkGlyphColor to 33289 (hex 0x008209). It is currently 13369601. The other chalk glyph colors can be changed the same way.[12]

What changed in Occultism between versions?

4 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Occultism 1.224.4, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own release notes. Every version listed is at or below 1.224.4, so you already have all of it.[2]

Latest releases (1.224.x)

  • 1.224.4 fixes ritual names in HUDs.[13]
  • 1.224.3 adds a guard against a missing entity ID.[14]

  • 1.224.1 fixes a ClientLevel memory leak that happened on dimension change or disconnect.[16]
  • 1.224.0 adds a French (fr_fr) translation.[17]

Earlier fixes and compatibility work

  • 1.220.4 fixes the current recipe not being saved.[18]
  • 1.215.0 implements the Clearable interface on some blocks so they work with Sable.[19]
  • 1.214.0 makes the EMI ritual recipe category work properly with AE2 autocrafting.[20]
  • 1.208.0 re-registers machine operators after storage upgrades and separates controller lookup from registration.[21]
  • 1.205.0 includes optimisation patches.[22]
  • 1.203.0 includes a batch of fixes and quality-of-life changes.[23]

Content and visuals

  • 1.197.0 brings the Farmer Spirit, along with other fixes.[24]
  • 1.196.0 adds the remaining new item and block textures.[25]

Translations

Several releases are mostly language updates: Chinese Simplified in 1.194.0, Brazilian Portuguese in 1.201.0 and 1.210.0, and Crowdin updates in 1.199.0. Japanese was updated in 1.221.0, and 1.223.0 then reverted a later Japanese localization update.[26][27][28][29][30][31]
