What is Create: Occult Engineering?

3 parts

Create: Occult Engineering is currently described on its project page as an integration between Create and Occultism. It lets you automate the occult side of things, like rituals and other otherworldly jobs, with Create-style machines. If you like building contraptions and also want Occultism's magic to run without you babysitting it, this mod is for you.[1]

This pack ships version 0.13.1 of the mod, built for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod page says it currently supports Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, and that the Create version must be 6.0.8 or newer.[1][2]

What you can automate

  • Spiritfire: as the mod page currently describes it, you put a Spiritfire or Spirit Campfire in front of an Encased Fan to automate that process.[1]
  • Rituals: the Mechanical Chamber automates any ritual that doesn't need a sacrifice or external item use. A Mechanical Arm is the best way to feed it books, and it uses the items in the Sacrificial Bowls around it as usual.[1]
  • Crushing: the Mechanical Pulverizer crushes things into dust, and can replace Occultism's crushing entities for all the dusts.[1]
  • Phlogiports: the mod page currently says these wirelessly send packages around based on their address.[1]
  • Otherworld Detector: as currently described, it outputs a Redstone signal when the nearest player has otherworld vision, from either the goggles or the third eye potion effect. A comparator on it gives you the distance to that player.[1]
  • Spirit Solution: you can make it by heating Demon's Dream Fruit with water or by crushing Demon's Dream Seeds. It binds books instead of crafting with a Dictionary of Spirits.[1]

Getting started

Craft the Encyclopedia of Souls first. The book explains the rest of the mod, and you can also check recipes in JEI. Every piece of Occult Machinery is documented in Create's Ponder as well.[1]

The Pentacles this mod adds each need the Mechanical Chamber and will not work with the Golden Sacrificial Bowl. Otherwise they work the same way as in Occultism.[3]

Tip: Not sure how something works? The mod treats missing documentation as a bug, so check Ponder and the Encyclopedia of Souls first.[1]

Still in development

The mod page currently lists some features as partially developed: they have some functionality but are not feature complete, with no clear progression yet. Copper, Zinc and Brass chalk can be drawn on the ground like Occultism's regular chalk and are used for new rituals. The Púca is a new spirit, and the page says that in the future it is planned to become a Create helper entity, much like Occultism's lumberjacks.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show any quests for this mod in the pack, or where it sits in the pack's progression, so treat it as an optional add-on for now.

How do you get started with Create: Occult Engineering?

6 parts

Welcome to the Create and Occultism crossover! This mod is about automating Occultism rituals with Create machines. Here is a sensible path through the first items, and why each one matters. The order comes from the mod's own guide and the recipes.[1][4]

Craft the Encyclopedia of Souls

Start with the Encyclopedia of Souls. It is the mod's in-game guide, and the rest of the mod can be discovered from inside it or by reading recipes in JEI. The machines are also explained in Create's Ponder.[1][4]

Make Spirit Solution

Spirit Solution is used to bind books instead of crafting with a Dictionary of Spirits, so you want it early. The mod's page says to mix Demon's Dream Fruit with water while heated. You can also get it from Demon's Dream Seeds, and in this pack that seed recipe is a Create compacting recipe.[1][4]

Get Sterling Silver

Sterling Silver Ingot turns up in many of the recipes below, so it is worth setting up early. You can make it with a Create mixing recipe.[4]

  • any copper dust
  • any silver dust

The pack also adds its own sterling silver alloy recipes for machines from other mods, so you are not tied to Create for this step. Here is one of them.[4]

Several recipes below need a Block of Sterling Silver, so you will want this one too.

Build the Mechanical Pulverizer

The Mechanical Pulverizer crushes items into dust, and it can be used in place of Occultism's crushing entities. Power it from the back with a Shaft, then right-click it with a valid item. After some time, right-click again to collect the result. Inputs and outputs can be automated too. The pack changed this recipe, so use the one shown here.[1][4][5]

Make the Mechanical Chamber

The Mechanical Chamber is a kinetic block that lets you automate crafting rituals. It is crafted through an Occultism ritual.[4][5]

  • Power it from the top or bottom with rotational power. The faster the rotation, the faster the ritual completes.[5]
  • Surround it with chalks and other ritual blocks. It pulls automatically from Sacrificial Bowls within 8 blocks, and you can fill those bowls by hand or through automation.[5]
  • A Mechanical Arm is the easiest way to feed it. The arm only inserts bound books once the rest of the ritual is ready, and then the chamber starts the ritual.[1][5]
Tip: Pentacles added by this mod need the Mechanical Chamber and will not work with the Golden Sacrificial Bowl. Otherwise they work the same way as in Occultism.[3]

Bind a Púca

The Púca is the first of the mod's mechanical rituals. Mix an empty Book of Binding into a Book of Binding: Púca, then fill it with Spirit Solution to get the Book of Binding: Púca (Bound). The bound Púca book is used in the rituals for the Otherworld Detector and the Phlogiport.[4][5]

How does Create: Occult Engineering work?

6 parts

Occult Engineering is an integration between Create and Occultism. Its goal is to let you automate occult rituals and otherworldly activities with Create machinery. Everything below is how those systems behave in this pack. The mod also documents its machines in Create's Ponder, so check Ponder in-game if you want to see them in action.[1][5]

Your starting point is the Encyclopedia of Souls. It's a simple shapeless craft, and the rest of the mod can be discovered from within the book.[1][4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: occultengineering:crafting/items/encyclopedia_of_souls

Mechanical Chamber: automating rituals

The Mechanical Chamber is a kinetic block that takes the place of a Golden Sacrificial Bowl for rituals that craft items. It has to be powered with rotational power from the top or the bottom, and the faster it spins, the faster the ritual completes. In this pack its stress impact is set to 4 in stressValues.v2.impact.mechanical_chamber.[5][6]

Set it up like a normal Occultism ritual. Surround the chamber with chalks and the other ritual blocks. It automatically pulls from Sacrificial Bowls within 8 blocks, and you can fill those bowls by hand or with automation.[5]

Mechanical Arms are the easiest way to feed the chamber. They only insert bound books once the rest of the ritual is in place, and then the chamber starts the ritual. Arms also only extract the resulting items from it.[1][5]

Watch out: The chamber can automate rituals that craft items, as long as they don't need a sacrifice or external item use. Rituals that need those still have to be done the usual Occultism way.[1][5]

The pentacles this mod adds are different from Occultism's. They require the Mechanical Chamber and won't work with the Golden Sacrificial Bowl. Otherwise they work the same way as in Occultism.[3]

Mechanical Pulverizer: crushing automation

The Mechanical Pulverizer crushes items into dust, and it can stand in for Occultism's crushing entities when you automate dusts. Power it from the back with a Shaft. In this pack its stress impact is 4, set in stressValues.v2.impact.mechanical_pulverizer.[1][5][6]

  1. Power the Pulverizer from the back with a Shaft.[5]
  2. Right-click it with a valid item.[5]
  3. After some time, right-click again to take the result.[5]
  4. If you'd rather not do it by hand, inputs and outputs can be automated too.[5]

The pack changed the Pulverizer's crafting recipe from the mod's version. It uses a Block of Sterling Silver, so you'll need sterling silver before you can build one.[4]

Phlogiports: wireless item transfer

Phlogiports are a logistics block for short-range wireless item transfer. You assign each one an address in its inventory UI, and it won't work until you do. Items can go in through the UI or through automation.[5]

If an inserted package's address doesn't match the port it went into, and another Phlogiport within range has that name, the package is sent wirelessly to that port's inventory. When several ports share the same name, they receive matching packages randomly.[5]

The maximum distance a Phlogiport can forward a package is set by [[config:config/occultengineering-server.toml#stressValues.v2.Phlogiport Range]]. This pack uses 128 blocks, which is the same as the mod default.[6]

Otherworld Detector: redstone output

The Otherworld Detector is a redstone block that detects whether the nearest player can see into the Otherworld. A player can do that by eating Demon's Dream Fruit to get the Third Eye, or by wearing Otherworld Goggles. Put a comparator on it to read the distance to that player.[1][5]

Spirit Solution and binding books

Spirit Solution is used to bind books instead of crafting with a Dictionary of Spirits. In this pack you can make it by mixing water with Otherworld Essence, or by compacting Demon's Dream Seeds.[1][4]

The Púca is a new spirit. You make an unbound Book of Binding: Púca by mixing, then fill it with Spirit Solution to get the Book of Binding: Púca (Bound). The bound book can be used to summon the púca.[4][5]

Filling (create)

Recipe id: occultengineering:filling/bind_puca_book

There's also a client option, client.spirit_solution, which multiplies the vision range you get through Spirit Solution. The pack leaves it at 1, the mod default.[7]

Chalks, fans and upgrades

Copper, zinc and brass chalk are drawn on the ground like Occultism's regular chalk and are used for new rituals. Each impure chalk is a Create compacting recipe that uses Spirit Solution.[1][4]

How do you progress through Create: Occult Engineering?

6 parts

Occult Engineering mixes Create machines with Occultism rituals, and in this pack the progression comes from the recipe chain, not from quests. The order below follows what each recipe needs, so you know what to build before the next step.[4]

Unverified I couldn't confirm any quest that guides you through this mod, so the order below is based on recipe dependencies, not a quest path.

The basics

Start with the Encyclopedia of Souls. It's a shapeless craft that combines a Create cogwheel with Occultism's dictionary of spirits, and it holds the mod's in-game guide.[4]

Next comes Spirit Solution, which almost everything else uses. You can make it by mixing water with Demon's Dream Fruit, or by mixing water with Otherworld Essence. Compacting Demon's Dream Seeds also works.[4]

Mixing (create)

Recipe id: occultengineering:mixing/spirit_solution_from_fruit

Tier 2: Sterling silver

Sterling Silver Ingot is the mod's main metal. The mod's own recipe is a Create mixing recipe with copper dust and silver dust. The pack also adds alloy recipes for Ender IO, Immersive Engineering and the Oritech foundry. Each accepts either copper and silver dusts or copper and silver ingots.[4]

Mixing (create)

  • any copper dust
  • any silver dust

Recipe id: occultengineering:mixing/sterling_silver_ingot

You can compact the metal into a Block of Sterling Silver and break it back down into ingots and Sterling Silver Nugget items. The block is needed for several later crafts.[4]

Chalks, Phlogiston and the Púca book

Metal chalks are made in stages. First you compact Spirit Solution and Impure White Chalk with a metal dust to get an impure chalk, such as Impure Copper Chalk, Impure Zinc Chalk or Impure Brass Chalk. Then you run it through spirit fire to get the finished Copper Chalk, Zinc Chalk or Brass Chalk.[4]

Phlogiston is made by compacting blaze powder with lava. Mixing it with a sterling silver ingot gives Silver Phlogistate, which a later ritual uses.[4]

The Mechanical Chamber and machines

The Mechanical Chamber is made through an Occultism ritual. It uses a sterling silver block and a bound Foliot book, and the ritual is performed with the Golden Sacrificial Bowl. The Pentacles this mod adds need the Chamber and don't work with the Golden Sacrificial Bowl. Otherwise they work the same as in Occultism.[3][4]

The pack changed the recipe for the Mechanical Pulverizer. It's a shaped craft that uses a sterling silver block.[4]

How does Create: Occult Engineering work with other mods?

4 parts

Occult Engineering is a bridge between Create and Occultism, so almost every recipe it adds mixes items from both. It lets you automate occult rituals and otherworldly activities with Create machines. This pack also pulls in Create Connected for the fan catalyst.[1][4]

Spirit Solution: Create machines, Occultism crops

The key liquid of the mod is Spirit Solution, and you make it with Create processing. Mixing water with either Demon's Dream or Otherworld Essence gives you Spirit Solution. Compacting Demon's Dream Seeds also works.[4]

Which Create: Occult Engineering config options matter?

3 parts

Good news: this pack leaves the Occult Engineering settings it exposes at their mod defaults, so what you read in the mod's own docs for these options applies here. These are the ones you're most likely to care about.[6][7]

Client: Spirit Solution vision

client.spirit_solution multiplies the vision range you get through Spirit Solution. The pack sets it to 1, which is the mod default, so the range isn't scaled up or down. The allowed range is 0.125 to 256.0 if you want to tweak it for yourself.[7]

Server: Phlogiport range

[[config:config/occultengineering-server.toml#stressValues.v2.Phlogiport Range]] is the maximum distance, in blocks, that a Phlogiport can forward a package. The pack uses 128, the same as the mod default. The option accepts values from 8 to 2,048.[6]

Server: stress impact

Unverified The sources don't list the mod defaults for the two stress impact values, so we can't confirm whether the pack changed them.

What changed in Create: Occult Engineering between versions?

1 part

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Create: Occult Engineering 0.13.1, in the file occultengineering-1.21.1-0.13.1.jar. The mod was already in the pack by version 1.1.1 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so which pack release picked up each mod change is unverified.

Mod releases

  • 0.13.1: Fixed client-side particles being loaded in server-side code. The rest of this release was housekeeping: an update to the publishing tool and a typo fix.[8]
  • 0.12.3: Updated the Occultism dependency to fix a crash when using the pulverizer.[9]
  • 0.12.1: Fixed a crash when using an UpgradeRitual, and updated the Simplified Chinese (zh_cn) translation for 1.21.1.[10]
  • 0.11.1: Updated the impure chalk textures.[11]
  • 0.11.0: Fixed errors with crafting recipes.[12]
  • 0.10.5: The PucaEntity can be spawned again.[13]
  • 0.10.1: Added a unique model for the combined goggles, plus a keybind to toggle them while they are on your head. Also fixed the otherworld detector so it depowers and repowers comparators properly.[14]
  • 0.10.0: Updated the Create and Occultism dependencies. The changelog flags this as a breaking change.[15]

If you hit a crash with the pulverizer or with an UpgradeRitual, those were fixed in 0.12.3 and 0.12.1, so they are already covered in the version the pack ships.[2][9][10]
