What is Cognition?

1 part

Cognition (formerly Experience Obelisk) is a mod about player XP. It gives you new ways to store, transport and use experience. It also adds a resource called Cognitium, described as pure knowledge given physical form, which powers its mystical machinery. The mod's own page says the content is still fairly small, with more in the works.[1]

The pack ships Cognition 2.4.13 for Minecraft 1.21.1. If you want to wear the mod's items in curio slots, the mod lists Curios API as an optional extra.[1][2]

Where it fits in the pack

Cognition shows up in the technology questline. It starts with a quest for Cognitive Flux and Astute Assembly ("Cognition: Using your Knowledge" quest). Several quests branch from there: the Experience Obelisk (a quest in "General Tech"), the Molecular Metamorpher with the Transforming Focus (a quest in "General Tech"), and the Precision Dispeller with the Experience Fountain ("Experience Extras" quest).[3]

Once you finish the Metamorpher and Obelisk quests, a final quest opens. It asks for the Bibliophage, an observation task and Fluorescent Agar (a quest in "General Tech").[3]

The Obelisk also appears in the useful-items tips chapter. That quest accepts either the Obelisk or the Experience Holder from Just Dire Things, so you have a choice of XP storage (a quest in "Useful Items & Tips").[4]

Early on, the gearing-up chapter has a quest that accepts any one of the Cognitive tools (shovel, pickaxe, axe, hoe, rod or shears) or Flint and Cognitive Alloy ("Cognition Tools" quest).[5]

Late in the pack, Whisperglass is one of the items a world engine quest asks for, alongside items from other mods ("Neutron Activator" quest).[6]

Unverified The quests only name the items. No in-jar guidebook was found, so what each machine does in detail, and how each one is crafted in this pack, is not confirmed here.

How do you get started with Cognition?

5 parts

Cognition is all about player XP: storing it, moving it around and spending it on strange machines. The order below follows the pack's technology quests and the recipes the pack actually uses.[1][3]

Cognitive Flux, then Cognitive Amalgam

Everything begins with Cognitive Flux. It is a task of quest "Cognition: Using your Knowledge" quest in the technology chapter, which has no prerequisite listed. The pack has changed its recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[3][7]

Flux isn't the material you build with. You cook it into Cognitive Amalgam, which later recipes use. The pack changed both the smelting and the blasting recipe, so a furnace or a blast furnace will do.[7]

Astute Assembly

The second task of that same quest is Astute Assembly. Make it early, because the Cognitive tools, the Obelisk, the Fountain and the Metamorpher all need it.[3][7]

Your first Cognitive tool

The gearing up chapter has a quest ("Cognition Tools" quest) that accepts any one of the Cognitive shovel, pickaxe, axe, hoe, rod or shears, or Flint and Cognitive Alloy. The tools are smithing table upgrades of the matching vanilla tool, so pick whichever you will use most. Here is the Cognitive Pickaxe as an example, plus the flint option.[5][7]

The Experience Obelisk

Next comes Experience Obelisk, which stores and retrieves experience and passively absorbs nearby XP orbs. It has its own quest, a quest in "General Tech", which comes after the Flux and Astute Assembly quest.[3][8]

Grab the Staff of Attunement as well. It binds, queries and configures this mod's blocks, and both the Experience Fountain and the Molecular Metamorpher need to be bound to an Obelisk to work.[7][8]

Tip: Once the Flux and Astute Assembly quest is complete, the quests for the Metamorpher with its Transforming Focus, and for the Precision Dispeller with the Fountain, open up as well. Only the Bibliophage quest waits for both the Metamorpher and the Obelisk quests, so you can do the rest in any order.[3]

How does Cognition work?

6 parts

The mod's project page says Cognition aims to overhaul player XP by providing new ways to store, transport and use it, and that for now the content available is quite small, with more in the works. It describes its power source, Cognitium, as pure knowledge given corporeal form. This section covers how the pieces fit together in this pack, based on what the mod's own text and the pack's config files confirm.[1]

The Experience Obelisk

The Experience Obelisk is the heart of everything. Its description says it handles experience storage and retrieval, and that it passively absorbs nearby experience orbs. In its screen you can store 1 level, 10 levels or all of your levels, and retrieve them in the same amounts. There is also a button to reset the obelisk's radius to default.[8]

The pack changes the obelisk's size a lot. [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Experience Obelisk Capacity.Capacity]] is set to 2,147,483,640 mB here, the maximum the option allows, while the mod default is 100,000,000 mB.[9]

Watch out: The config notes that setting the capacity above the mod default may lead to unintended loss or gain of XP, because of a rounding error in Minecraft's XP handling. The pack's value is far above that default, so keep this in mind when you store huge amounts.[9]

The obelisk also works with XP fluids from other mods. [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Allowed Experience Fluids.AllowedFluids]] lists the supported ones in this pack, including fluids from Mob Grinding Utils, CoFH Core, Industrial Foregoing, Sophisticated Core, Ender IO and Reliquary. Any fluid you add yourself has to be tagged forge:experience.[9]

Binding and remote access

The descriptions of the fountain and the Molecular Metamorpher say they require binding to an obelisk. The Staff of Attunement is described as binding, querying and configuring blocks from this mod. The Memory Tablet is described as remote obelisk access and experience recovery, and you link it with SHIFT + Right Click on an obelisk.[7][8]

Both tools share a binding range. [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Binding Range.Range]] is 48 blocks in this pack, which is the same as the mod default. If bound blocks misbehave, lowering it is the config's suggested fix.[9]

  • Experience Fountain: its description says it dispenses experience orbs at an adjustable rate and requires binding to an obelisk.[8]
  • Filling and emptying XP containers: the mod's recipe tooltips say to right click a fountain that is bound to an obelisk. To empty a container the obelisk must have enough space, and to fill one it must have enough XP.[8]
  • Molecular Metamorpher: its description says it blasts ingredients with a beam of concentrated XP to convert them into more advanced materials, and that it requires binding to an obelisk. It has an option to lock its input slots. The Transforming Focus is described as permitting the Metamorpher to perform transforming recipes.[8]
  • Precision Dispeller: its description says it selectively removes enchantments and curses. Its tooltip says removing a curse costs 30 levels / 1,395 XP, while removing an enchantment gives XP back.[8]

Infected bookshelves: passive XP

The Bibliophage is described as infecting bookshelves and generating XP in the process: use it on a valid bookshelf. An infected bookshelf decays slowly and releases experience orbs as it does. Infection can also spread by placing bookshelves next to infectious blocks.[8]

Each infected shelf type has its own settings in this pack. Each of them waits between 300 and 500 ticks between spawns, and each has a 0.02 chance per second to infect a valid adjacent block.[9]

  • Infected Bookshelf: orbs worth 12 XP, 50 spawns before it decays.[9]
  • Infected Archiver's Bookshelf (from the Archiver's Bookshelf): orbs worth 12 XP, 100 spawns, so it lasts twice as long as an ordinary bookshelf.[8][9]
  • Infected Enchanted Bookshelf (from the Enchanted Bookshelf): orbs worth 24 XP and 100 spawns, so it lasts twice as long and gives orbs with twice the value.[8][9]

Decaying shelves can drop Forgotten Dust. The mod's text says an infected bookshelf drops it when broken (100%), and the pack raises the chance on decay with [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.DropDustChance]] set to 0.5 instead of the mod default of 0.33. Infected bookshelves and Agar blocks are not permeable to dust item entities in this pack.[8][9]

Agar blocks

The descriptions call Agar blocks infectious blocks that tune your bookshelf setup. Fluorescent Agar is described as a block of nutritious jelly, and inoculating it turns it into Nutrient Agar, which does not decay and has a slow infection rate.[8]

  • Nutrient Agar: infection chance 0.005 per second.[8][9]
  • Insightful Agar: its description says it reduces the spawn delay of surrounding bookshelves. Infection chance 0.01 per second.[8][9]
  • Extravagant Agar: its description says it boosts the orb value of surrounding bookshelves. Infection chance 0.02 per second.[8][9]

Insightful and Extravagant Agar give a bigger bonus the more closely they touch a shelf: 1.35 for a shared face, 1.15 for a shared edge and 1.1 for a shared vertex. These are the mod defaults, so the pack leaves them unchanged. Agar also emits light in this pack, and you can turn that off if shaders cost you frames.[9]

Collecting orbs: amulets

The Enlightened Amulet is described as teleporting nearby experience orbs to you and merging them for faster absorption. SHIFT + Right Click toggles it on and off. Its range is 8 blocks. In this pack it ignores orbs from Experience Fountains but not orbs from infected bookshelves.[8][9]

The Fortuitous Amulet is described as inheriting the properties of the Enlightened Amulet and giving a boost to XP drops from mobs. The pack changes its recipe.[7][8]

How do you progress through Cognition?

5 parts

Cognition doesn't have named tiers in this pack. What you get instead is a quest path that starts with a few basic materials and branches into machines. Here it is in the order the quests unlock it.[3][5]

Stage 1: Flux, Amalgam and the basic materials

The path starts with the first quest in the technology chapter, "Cognition: Using your Knowledge" quest. It asks for Cognitive Flux and Astute Assembly. Everything else in that chapter unlocks after it.[3]

The pack changed the Cognitive Flux recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Here is the pack's version:[7]

4× Cognitive FluxChanged by the pack

You turn Flux into Cognitive Amalgam in a furnace or a blast furnace. The pack changed both of those recipes too. Amalgam is the base for nearly everything else in the mod.[7]

Alloy and Crystal together make the Astute Assembly, which the first quest asks for and which many later recipes use:[7]

Stage 2: Gear

The gearing up chapter has a quest, "Cognition Tools" quest, that accepts any one of several items. These are the Cognitive shovel, pickaxe, axe, hoe, rod and shears, or Flint and Cognitive Alloy. Handing in any one of them completes the quest.[5][7]

The Cognitive tools are smithing-table upgrades that use an Astute Assembly and Cognitive Alloy. Here is the pickaxe as an example:[7]

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: cognition:cognitive_pickaxe

Stage 3: The technology branches

Once the first quest is done, the technology chapter splits into these quests that you can do in any order.[3]

The Experience Obelisk is also accepted by a quest in the useful items and tips chapter, a quest in "Useful Items & Tips". That quest takes either the Obelisk or an experience holder item from another mod.[4]

How does Cognition work with other mods?

4 parts

Cognition is all about player XP and Cognitium, so most of its links to other mods are about moving XP around or using its crafted parts in other mods' gear. Here is what the pack's recipes and quests actually connect.[1]

Turning other mods' XP items into Cognitium

The pack has several Create Enchantment Industry grinding recipes that output Cognitium Source. They take XP items from Create (Block of Experience, Nugget of Experience), from Create Enchantment Industry (Block of Super Experience, Nugget of Super Experience) and from Ars Nouveau (Experience Gem, Greater Experience Gem). The dump marks all of these as changed by the pack. Here is one of them:[7]

World Engine recipes

Several pack-added custom machine recipes, filed under world_engine, mix Cognition items with parts from other mods. Each one is a way to upgrade or combine an existing item:[7]

Quests that cross over

The quest a quest in "Useful Items & Tips" accepts either Experience Obelisk or the experience holder from Just Dire Things (Experience Holder), so you can pick whichever XP storage you prefer.[4]

In the World Engine tier 5 chapter, "Neutron Activator" quest asks for Whisperglass alongside items from Custom Machinery, Oritech and Actually Additions.[6]

The rest of Cognition's quests only ask for Cognition items. The technology chapter covers Cognitive Flux, Astute Assembly, Molecular Metamorpher and Bibliophage, among others. The gearing up chapter accepts any Cognitive tool or Flint and Cognitive Alloy in "Cognition Tools" quest.[3][5]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Cognition?

4 parts

Cognition shows up in the technology, gearing up, useful items and tips, and World Engine Tier 5 chapters of the pack. Most of it is in the technology chapter, and the other chapters each touch it with a single quest. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so I point to them by their quest refs.[3][4][5][6]

Technology chapter

This is the main Cognition path, and it opens with "Cognition: Using your Knowledge" quest. It asks you to hand in Cognitive Flux and Astute Assembly. Several quests unlock once it's done.[3]

The last quest in the chapter is a quest in "General Tech". It unlocks only after you finish both a quest in "General Tech" and a quest in "General Tech". Its tasks are the Bibliophage, an observation task, and Fluorescent Agar.[3]

Tip: Once the first technology quest is finished, the Experience Obelisk quest, the Molecular Metamorpher quest and the Precision Dispeller quest can be done in any order. Only the final quest waits on some of them.[3]

Gearing Up chapter

"Cognition Tools" quest lets you pick any one item to submit: Cognitive Shovel, Cognitive Pickaxe, Cognitive Axe, Cognitive Hoe, Cognitive Rod, Cognitive Shears or Flint and Cognitive Alloy.[5]

Useful Items and Tips chapter

a quest in "Useful Items & Tips" accepts either Experience Holder or the Experience Obelisk, so you can finish it with whichever you have.[4]

World Engine Tier 5 chapter

"Neutron Activator" quest asks for Whisperglass together with several items from other mods, including custom machine, Oritech and Actually Additions items. It comes after another quest in the same chapter.[6]

Which Cognition config options matter?

4 parts

Cognition keeps its settings in config/cognition-common.toml. This pack changes only two values from the mod defaults, and both are about XP. Everything else below is exactly how the mod ships.[9]

What the pack changed

  • [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.DropDustChance]] is 0.5 in the pack, up from the mod default of 0.33. It is the chance that infected bookshelves of any kind drop Forgotten Dust when they decay, so you get dust more often than the mod default would give you. Setting it to 0.0 stops decaying bookshelves from dropping dust completely.[9]
  • [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Experience Obelisk Capacity.Capacity]] is 2,147,483,640 mB in the pack, which is the highest value the option allows. The mod default is 100,000,000 mB, which the config describes as about 1072 levels' worth.[9]
Watch out: The config warns that setting the obelisk capacity above the default may lead to unintended loss or gain of XP, because of a rounding error in Minecraft's XP handling. This pack's capacity is above the default, so keep that in mind when you store huge amounts. If you ever change the value, make it divisible by 20.[9]

Infected bookshelves

The per-shelf options are all at their mod defaults in the pack. Each shelf type waits between 300 and 500 ticks between spawns, and each has a 0.02 chance per second to infect a valid adjacent block.[9]

  • Infected Bookshelves: 50 spawns before decaying, with orbs worth 12 XP each ([[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Bookshelves.Spawns]] and [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Bookshelves.OrbValue]]).[9]
  • Infected Archiver's Bookshelves: 100 spawns, with orbs worth 12 XP each ([[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Archiver's Bookshelves.Spawns]] and [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Archiver's Bookshelves.OrbValue]]).[9]
  • Infected Enchanted Bookshelves: 100 spawns, with orbs worth 24 XP each ([[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Enchanted Bookshelves.Spawns]] and [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Enchanted Bookshelves.OrbValue]]).[9]

Agar

Agar settings are also at their defaults. Each second, Nutrient Agar has a 0.005 chance to infect a valid adjacent block, Insightful Agar has 0.01 and Extravagant Agar has 0.02. The bonuses that Insightful and Extravagant Agar give to bookshelves are 1.15 for a shared edge, 1.35 for a shared face and 1.1 for a shared vertex.[9]

Tip: [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Agar Settings.AgarEmitsLight]] is true in the pack. If you run intensive shader settings and see fps drops, set it to false.[9]

Other options worth knowing

  • [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Binding Range.Range]] is 48 blocks, the mod default, for the Staff of Attunement and Memory Tablet. The config suggests lowering it if bound blocks stop working correctly.[9]
  • [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Enlightened Amulet.Range]] is 8 blocks. The amulet does not ignore bookshelf orbs ([[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Enlightened Amulet.IgnoresBookshelfOrbs]] is false) but does ignore Experience Fountain orbs ([[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Enlightened Amulet.IgnoresFountainOrbs]] is true).[9]
  • [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Allowed Experience Fluids.AllowedFluids]] lists the fluids the obelisk supports: mob_grinding_utils:fluid_xp, cofh_core:experience, industrialforegoing:essence, sophisticatedcore:xp_still, enderio:fluid_xp_juice_still and reliquary:xp_still. Any fluid you add must be tagged forge:experience.[9]
  • Fluorescent Jelly gives 2 hunger points ([[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Fluorescent Jelly.Nutrition]]) and 1 saturation ([[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Fluorescent Jelly.Saturation]]).[9]
  • [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Enable Name Formatting Recipes.Formatting]] is true, so the custom recipes for changing item name color and formatting are enabled.[9]

What changed in Cognition between versions?

4 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Cognition 2.4.13, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. The changelogs I have cover versions 2.4.8 to 2.4.13, so here are the notable changes in that range, newest first. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod.[2]

2.4.13 (the version in this pack)

  • Transforming Foci can now be enchanted with mending, which stops them losing durability in the Metamorpher.[10]
  • Removed a leftover printout that was spamming the console.[10]

2.4.12

  • Added an item tag called neurogel_blacklisted. Datapack makers can use it to stop items being repaired with Mending Neurogel.[11]
  • Mending Neurogel now gets a 25% performance boost when used on Cognitive tools and armor.[11]
  • Breaking any variety of Infected Bookshelf now drops more Forgotten Dust, while the decay of those bookshelves drops less. Infected Archiver's Bookshelves in particular drop up to 8x as much Forgotten Dust when broken.[11]
  • Fixed a crash when an Obelisk was assembled into a Create contraption.[11]

2.4.11 and 2.4.10

  • 2.4.11 added config options for Infected Bookshelf and Agar infectivity, plus pt_br localizations.[12]
  • 2.4.10 added a config option to turn off the extra tooltip information on the Cognitive Bow.[13]

2.4.9 and 2.4.8

  • 2.4.9 fixed the Obelisk radius being centered on a corner of the block instead of the middle.[14]
  • 2.4.8 added some materials to chest loot: Cognitive Flux in ruined portal chests, Astute Assemblies in desert temple chests, and Forgotten Dust in stronghold library chests and abandoned mineshafts.[15]
  • 2.4.8 also raised Cognitive toolset durability from 835 to 921.[15]
  • 2.4.8 fixed a client-server mismatch that sometimes happened during fluorescent agar infection.[15]
