What is Malum?
2 parts
Malum is a dark magic mod built around spirit arcana, a study of soul magic. You learn it through the Encyclopedia Arcana, a journal written by an unknown author. The mod is very open-ended, so you can chase whichever branch interests you most. The pack ships Malum 1.8.2.[1][2]
What you get
- Runewood trees, a mix of nature and magic with a full set of wood blocks, plus underground ores like soulstone and natural quartz.[1]
- Spirit infusion, the core system for using spirit arcana, and spirit focusing, which turns raw spirit matter into new resources.[1]
- Trinkets, armor, tools and weapons from spirit magic. Each trinket and armor set has its own effect, and some combine well.[1]
- Totem magic, where each spirit has its own rituals.[1]
The mod page lists Lodestone and Curios API as requirements for Malum.[1]
Where it fits in the pack
Malum has its own quest line in the general magic chapter. It starts simple and branches out as you unlock more of the mod.[3]
- "The Weeping Well" quest kicks things off with a Runewood Sapling or Azure Runewood Sapling, some Raw Soulstone, and an observation task.[3]
- "The Reaping of Souls" quest has you get a Crude Scythe and a Spirit Altar.[3]
- From there the quests branch: the Spirit Crucible with Alchemical Impetus, the Runewood Totem Base, and metals like Hallowed Gold Ingot and Soulstained Steel Ingot alongside Hex Ash. A soulwoven and Soulhunter armor branch also opens here.[3]
- Later quests cover Malignant Lead, then Malignant Pewter Ingot and Malignant Pewter Plating, and finally the Malignant Stronghold armor, such as the Malignant Stronghold Helmet.[3]
Malum gear also shows up in the gearing up chapter: scythes like the Soulstained Steel Scythe and Edge of Deliverance, plus the Soulhunter, Soulstained Steel and Malignant Stronghold armor sets.[4]
Early Malum items also appear in the World Engine tier 3 chapter. There, a quest asks for Runewood Log, Refined Soulstone and a Spirit Altar, and a follow-up quest asks for a Crude Scythe and a Soulstained Steel Ingot.[5]
How do you get started with Malum?
5 parts
Malum is a dark magic mod built around spirit arcana, and it lets you pick your own order. This pack gives you a ready-made path through it in the general magic quest chapter, so that's the order I'd follow.[1][3]
Step 1: Saplings and raw soulstone
The first quest, "The Weeping Well" quest, asks for a Runewood Sapling or an Azure Runewood Sapling, some Raw Soulstone, and one observation task. In this pack both saplings have Market recipes that the pack changed, so you can get them from a Market.[3][6]
Step 2: Turn it into refined soulstone
Refined Soulstone is the key material in this section. The crude scythe, the spirit altar, the alchemical impetus and the soulhunter armor all use it. You can smelt raw soulstone, as shown below. Soulstone ore, deepslate soulstone ore and crushed soulstone also have smelting or blasting recipes that give refined soulstone.[6]
The pack also changed the Create washing recipe for Crushed Soulstone. It gives you both Hex Ash and refined soulstone.[6]
Step 3: Crude scythe and spirit altar
Quest "The Reaping of Souls" quest asks for the Crude Scythe and the Spirit Altar, and the rest of the chapter branches from it. Both are normal crafting recipes.[3][6]

Step 4: Hex ash and hallowed gold
Quest "Spiritual Metallurgy" quest wants Hex Ash, a Hallowed Gold Ingot and a Soulstained Steel Ingot. Both of the first two are spirit infusion recipes, and the pack changed the hallowed gold one from the mod's version. Spirit infusion is the core system the mod uses for spirit arcana.[1][3][6]

Step 5: Pick a branch
Once the altar quest is done, several quests open at once. You can go for the Spirit Crucible and Alchemical Impetus in a quest in "Magic", or the Runewood Totem Base in "Totemic Rites" quest. You can also start the soulwoven silk, pouch and soulhunter armor in a quest in "Magic", or fetch an umbral spirit and an encyclopedia in a quest in "Magic". The impetus and totem base are both spirit infusion recipes.[3][6]

How does Malum work?
4 parts
Malum is a spirit magic mod, and you learn it through the Encyclopedia Arcana, a journal that guides you through the mod. Spirit infusion is the core system for turning spirit arcana into new things. Spirit focusing materializes new resources out of raw spirit matter. Totem magic gives each spirit its own set of rituals.[1]
The crafting systems
Alongside ordinary crafting, Malum has its own recipe types. In this pack's recipe dump you will see spirit infusion, spirit focusing, runeworking, soul binding, void favor and unchained transmutation. Spirit infusion has 59 recipes that take Malum items and make Malum items, and unchained transmutation has 45.[6]

Void favor, for example, turns an Encyclopedia Arcana into an Encyclopedia Esoterica.[6]
Void Favor (malum)
Recipe id: malum:void_favor/encyclopedia_esoterica
A void favor recipe.
What this pack changes
The pack adds two void favor recipes of its own. One turns glow berries into glowstone dust. The other turns Nether gold ore into Cthonic Gold Ore. The pack also adds an Occultism spirit fire recipe that turns Nether gold ore into a Cthonic Gold Fragment, so you get an extra route to Cthonic Gold.[7]
The pack has changed the spirit infusion recipe for the Aluminum Impetus and the bolting recipe for the Bolted Runewood Board Door. It also adds a Create cutting recipe from Runewood Planks to the Runewood Door.[6]

Natural quartz is removed in this pack. Its unification script marks the natural quartz ore and deepslate quartz ore for removal, along with the natural quartz item and its smelting, blasting and Create crushing recipes. The same script also removes runewood and soulwood logs from the burnable logs tag. Runewood logs still smelt into Arcane Charcoal.[6][8]
Runewood logs smelt into arcane charcoal.
Item handling: the Ravenous Pouch guard
The pack runs a script that stops you from right-clicking a Spirit Jar while holding a Ravenous Pouch that still has items inside. The click is cancelled and you get a red denial message. An empty pouch is not blocked.[9]
Spirits and combat settings
These are the values in this pack's Malum config. With spirit.noFancySpirits on, any spirit that drops simply takes the form of an item. With spirit.spawner.lameSpawners on, mob spawners create soulless mobs. spirit.defaults.defaultSpiritValues is on, so entities without spirit data use the default spirit data for their category.[10]
codex.enableCodexDrop is off. That means an undead enemy will not drop the Encyclopedia Arcana for you. progression.hide_recipes is also off, so Malum does not hide some of its content.[10]
- soul_ward.soulWardRate is 100 ticks per point of soul ward recovered.[10]
- soul_ward.soulWardMagic is 0.10000000149011612, the same as the mod default. It multiplies magic damage taken while soul ward is active.[10]
- soul_ward.soulWardPhysical is 0.699999988079071, the same as the mod default. It multiplies physical damage taken while soul ward is active.[10]
- malignant_aegis.malignantAegisRate is 200 ticks per point of malignant aegis recovered.[10]
- staff_charge.staffChargeRate is 100 ticks per segment of staff charge recovered.[10]
- magic_damage.magicDamageReducedArmorPiercing is on. Damage tagged malum:bypasses_half_armor pierces only half of a player's armor stat, and armor takes no durability damage from it.[10]
- Both Iron's Spellbooks options, compat.irons_spellbooks.ironsSpellbooksPlayerSpiritDrops and compat.irons_spellbooks.ironsSpellbooksNonPlayerSpiritDrops, are on. Iron's Spellbooks magic damage counts as Soul Damage, for players and non-players alike.[10]
Malum also adds attributes that tune these systems. Soul Ward Capacity sets the capacity of your Soul Ward. Charge Capacity sets the capacity for Spell Charges. Geas Limit caps how many Geas Bindings you can have sworn at once. Spirit Spoils is a flat increase to the spirits looted from slain foes.[11]
How do you progress through Malum?
5 parts
Malum's progression in this pack follows the main general magic quest chapter. The quests have no titles, so I'm grouping them into stages by how they unlock each other. The pack doesn't label them as tiers itself. Everything starts with one quest where you pick up a sapling, raw soulstone and an observation task.[3]
Stage 1: Sapling, soulstone and the Spirit Altar
The opening quest "The Weeping Well" quest wants a Runewood Sapling or an Azure Runewood Sapling, some Raw Soulstone, and an observation task. The pack changed the market recipes for both saplings, but the recipe dump doesn't show what the market asks for them, so check the market in game.[3][6]
Void Favor (malum)
- any void soulstone material
Recipe id: malum:void_favor/raw_soulstone
Raw soulstone can also come from this Void Favor recipe, which accepts any item in the void soulstone material tag.
Refined Soulstone is the key material from here on. Several smelting and blasting recipes turn soulstone ore, deepslate soulstone ore, raw soulstone and Crushed Soulstone into it. The pack also changed the Create washing recipe for crushed soulstone, which is a way to get Hex Ash as well, shown below.[6]
Splashing (create)
Recipe id: malum:create/washing/crushed_soulstone
The pack changed this Create washing recipe.
The next quest "The Reaping of Souls" quest asks for a Crude Scythe and a Spirit Altar, plus two more item tasks that the sources here don't name. Almost everything else in the chapter unlocks from this quest.[3]

Stage 2: Crucible, totems and first metals
Once the altar quest is done, several quests open at the same time. You can take them in any order.[3]
- The Spirit Crucible and Alchemical Impetus quest a quest in "Magic" opens two more: the Repair Pylon in a quest in "Magic" and the Spirit Catalyzer in a quest in "Magic".[3]
- The Runewood Totem Base quest "Totemic Rites" quest leads to "Unchained Blight" quest, which wants Soulwood Log and Soulwood Sapling. Both come from transmutation recipes that turn the runewood log and sapling into their soulwood versions.[3][6]
- The metals quest "Spiritual Metallurgy" quest asks for Hallowed Gold Ingot, Soulstained Steel Ingot and hex ash. It unlocks the next branches of the chapter.[3]
- The soulwoven quest a quest in "Magic" covers Soulwoven Silk, the Soulwoven Pouch and one piece of Soulhunter armor, such as the Soulhunter Cloak.[3]
- a quest in "Magic" asks for an Umbral Spirit and one item from another mod.[3]
The hallowed gold ingot spirit infusion and the soulstained steel ingot spirit infusion are both pack changes that differ from the mod's defaults, so rely on the in-pack versions below.[6]

Stage 3: Steel gear, the brazier and the void quest
The metals quest opens five more quests. a quest in "Magic" asks for the Weaver's Workbench, and "Runeworking" quest asks for the Runic Workbench plus two unnamed item tasks. "Soulstained Equipment" quest wants a soulstained steel scythe or Tyrving, and a piece of soulstained steel armor. "Soulbinding Pacts" quest wants the Soulbinding Brazier and the Paracausal Flame.[3]

The fifth quest, "The Well's Returns" quest, asks for Null Slate, Void Salts, a Mnemonic Fragment and Malignant Lead. Void Favor recipes can make several of these: refined soulstone becomes null slate, Cthonic Gold becomes malignant lead, and refined or raw brilliance becomes a mnemonic fragment.[3][6]
Stage 4: Malignant pewter and the endgame
The null slate quest unlocks the last three branches. "Malignant Pewter" quest wants Malignant Pewter Ingot and Malignant Pewter Plating. "Conscious Weapons" quest wants the Sundering Anchor and Unwinding Chaos. a quest in "Magic" wants the Mnemonic Hex Staff.[3]

Other quest chapters that use Malum
Malum items also show up outside the main chapter. A quest in the gearing up chapter, "Malum Scythes" quest, wants a crude scythe, a soulstained steel scythe and the Edge of Deliverance. "Malum Armor" quest wants one piece each of Soulhunter, soulstained steel and Malignant Stronghold armor. "Malum Weapons" quest wants any one of several late-game weapons.[4]
The World Engine tier 3 chapter also asks for a Runewood Log, refined soulstone and a spirit altar in "Tampering With Spirits" quest. It follows with a crude scythe and a soulstained steel ingot in "Gathering Souls" quest.[5]
How does Malum work with other mods?
5 parts
Malum connects to the rest of the pack mostly through recipes. Its metal nodes give nuggets from the pack's shared materials set, Create and Farmer's Delight process Malum ores and logs, and Ars Hex and Gaze both build on Malum items. The pack also adds a few World Engine recipes that use Malum items.[6]
Metal nodes and pack materials
Malum's metal nodes have pack-changed smelting and blasting recipes. Each one gives a nugget from the pack's shared materials set. That covers aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, osmium, silver, tin, uranium and zinc. For example, an Aluminum Node becomes an Aluminum Nugget, and a Zinc Node becomes a Zinc Nugget.[6]
Create can also wash the copper and zinc nodes. A Copper Node gives a Copper Nugget and a Clay Ball. A zinc node gives a zinc nugget and some Gunpowder.[6]
Splashing (create)
Recipe id: malum:create/washing/zinc_node
Create and Farmer's Delight
- Create crushing works on Malum ores. Soulstone, brilliance and blazing quartz ores and raw materials all give a Nugget of Experience alongside their crushed or refined product. Cthonic Gold crushes into Crushed Raw Gold.[6]
- Washing Crushed Brilliance in Create gives a Refined Brilliance plus a Nugget of Experience.[6]
- Runewood and Soulwood can be stripped with Farmer's Delight cutting, which gives Tree Bark. This works on the logs and the wood blocks. Exposed logs turn into revealed logs the same way.[6]
- The pack also adds Create cutting recipes for the same stripping. Runewood and Soulwood logs and wood blocks give their stripped versions plus Tree Bark.[6]
Ars Hex
The pack changed several Ars Hex recipes so they need Malum items. The Enchanter's Scythe is made at the Enchanting Apparatus from a Soulstained Steel Scythe. The threads Magic Proficiency, Spirit Spoils and Soul Ward, and the Soul Shatter glyph, also take Malum items.[6]

Soulstained Steel Scythe
- 3× any archwood log
- any gold storage block
- any source storage block
Recipe id: ars_hex:enchanter_scythe
The pack changed this Soul Ward thread recipe so it needs Malum items.
Gaze
Gaze items come out of Malum's own crafting systems: runeworking, spirit infusion and soul binding. Runes such as Rune of Eir, Rune of Ymir, Rune of Fafnir and Rune of Nott are made by runeworking. Trinkets and weapons such as the Seidhr, Soul Rapier, Spirit Saber and Swift Spiral come from spirit infusion. Soul binding gives Domain of Swords and Pact of Encroaching Malice. These are listed as mod recipes, so the pack did not change them.[6]

The quest book follows this link. In the general magic chapter, a quest that comes after the one asking for a Crude Scythe and a Spirit Altar asks for an Umbral Spirit and the Encyclopedia Unveiled. That quest is a quest in "Magic".[3]

World Engine recipes
The pack adds several World Engine machine recipes that take Malum items alongside items from other mods. One takes a Refined Soulstone with a Draconium Chicken, a Draconium Block and an Awakened Feather. Another takes a Ring of Esoteric Spoils and a Spirit Jar. Others use the Imitation Heart with a Blank Glyph, Raw Brilliance with Fluorescent Jelly, and a Soulstained Steel Ingot with a Spirit Block.[6]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Malum?
4 parts
Malum shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. The main one is the general magic chapter, which walks you through the whole mod. Two more chapters, gearing up and World Engine tier 3, ask for Malum items as well. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so they are listed here by their IDs.[3][4][5]
General magic chapter
You start with "The Weeping Well" quest. It asks for a runewood sapling (either Azure Runewood Sapling or Runewood Sapling), Raw Soulstone, and an observation task. Next comes "The Reaping of Souls" quest, which asks for the Crude Scythe and the Spirit Altar, plus two more item tasks the data doesn't name. Everything else in the chapter hangs off this quest.[3]
After that, the chapter splits into five branches.[3]
- a quest in "Magic" asks for the Spirit Crucible and Alchemical Impetus. It leads to a quest in "Magic" (Repair Pylon) and a quest in "Magic" (Spirit Catalyzer).[3]
- "Totemic Rites" quest asks for the Runewood Totem Base. It leads to "Unchained Blight" quest, which wants a Soulwood Log and a Soulwood Sapling.[3]
- a quest in "Magic" asks for Soulwoven Silk, a Soulwoven Pouch, and one piece of Soulhunter armor (cloak, robe, leggings or boots).[3]
- a quest in "Magic" asks for an Umbral Spirit and an item from another mod, the encyclopedia in the gaze namespace.[3]
- "Spiritual Metallurgy" quest asks for Hallowed Gold Ingot, Soulstained Steel Ingot and Hex Ash. It opens the biggest branch, covered below.[3]
The metalworking branch
Four quests unlock after the ingot quest. a quest in "Magic" asks for the Weaver's Workbench. "Runeworking" quest asks for the Runic Workbench plus two more unnamed item tasks. "Soulstained Equipment" quest wants either the Soulstained Steel Scythe or Tyrving, plus one piece of Soulstained Steel armor. "Soulbinding Pacts" quest asks for the Soulbinding Brazier and Paracausal Flame.[3]
The fifth quest, "The Well's Returns" quest, asks for Null Slate, Void Salts, Mnemonic Fragment and Malignant Lead. Three quests follow it: "Conscious Weapons" quest (Sundering Anchor and Unwinding Chaos), "Malignant Pewter" quest (Malignant Pewter Ingot and Malignant Pewter Plating), and a quest in "Magic" (Mnemonic Hex Staff).[3]
The pewter quest leads to the last two quests in the chapter. "Malignant Weapons" quest asks for Edge of Deliverance, Weight of Worlds and Erosion Scepter. "Malignant Armor" quest asks for all four pieces of Malignant Stronghold armor: Malignant Stronghold Helmet, Malignant Stronghold Chestplate, Malignant Stronghold Leggings and Malignant Stronghold Boots.[3]
Gearing up chapter
The Malum quests in this chapter have no prerequisites listed in the data. "Malum Scythes" quest asks for the Crude Scythe, the Soulstained Steel Scythe and the Edge of Deliverance. "Malum Armor" quest asks for one piece each of Soulhunter, Soulstained Steel and Malignant Stronghold armor. "Malum Weapons" quest is satisfied by any one of several Malum weapons, including the Soulstained Steel Sword, Tyrving, Mnemonic Hex Staff, Erosion Scepter, Weight of Worlds, Unwinding Chaos or Sundering Anchor.[4]
World Engine tier 3 chapter
Two Malum quests appear here. "Tampering With Spirits" quest asks for a Runewood Log, Refined Soulstone and a Spirit Altar. It unlocks after two earlier quests whose IDs are 695B2CCD18E5DDFE and 375DBC764A420D98, and those aren't covered by the sources I have. Then "Gathering Souls" quest asks for the Crude Scythe and Soulstained Steel Ingot.[5]
Which Malum config options matter?
5 parts
Malum splits its settings between a common config for gameplay and a client config for visuals and HUD. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, with the exact values this pack uses.[10][12]
Codex and progression
- codex.enableCodexDrop is false in this pack. When it's true, one of the first undead enemies you kill drops the encyclopedia arcana, so that drop is turned off here.[10]
- progression.hide_recipes is false. The option's own description says true is the intended way to play the mod and hides some of its content, so the pack leaves that content visible.[10]
Spirits
- spirit.noFancySpirits is true, so any spirits that drop simply take the form of an item.[10]
- spirit.spawner.lameSpawners is true, so mob spawners create soulless mobs instead.[10]
- spirit.defaults.defaultSpiritValues is true, so entities without spirit jsons use the default spirit data for their category.[10]
Soul ward, aegis and staff recovery
- soul_ward.soulWardMagic is 0.10000000149011612 and soul_ward.soulWardPhysical is 0.699999988079071. These multiply the magic and physical damage you take while soul ward is active, and both can range from 0.0 to 1.0. Both match the mod default, so the pack doesn't change them.[10]
- soul_ward.soulWardRate is 100 ticks per point of soul ward recovered.[10]
- malignant_aegis.malignantAegisRate is 200 ticks per point of malignant aegis recovered.[10]
- staff_charge.staffChargeRate is 100 ticks per segment of staff charge recovered.[10]
- magic_damage.magicDamageReducedArmorPiercing is true. Damage types tagged malum:bypasses_half_armor pierce only half of your armor stat instead of all of it, and your armor takes no durability damage from them.[10]
Iron's Spellbooks compat
Both compat options are true. compat.irons_spellbooks.ironsSpellbooksPlayerSpiritDrops makes Iron's Spellbooks magic damage count as Soul Damage, and compat.irons_spellbooks.ironsSpellbooksNonPlayerSpiritDrops does the same when the damage is dealt by non-players.[10]
Client options
- codex.bookTheme is DEFAULT. The other allowed value is EASY_READING.[12]
- codex.scrollDirection is false, so page scrolling in an encyclopedia arcana entry isn't reversed.[12]
- renderpass.renderParallelWorld is false. This turns off the parallel world renderer, which the config says to disable if it causes framerate issues.[12]
- scarf.scarfLength is 30 and affects every rendered Malignant Stronghold Scarf, not just yours. scarf.scarfOpacity is 0.4 and sets how visible the scarf is in first person.[12]
- ui.shieldX is 0 and ui.shieldY is 47. They position the Soul Ward and Malignant Aegis HUD elements: X is the offset from the screen center, Y the offset from the bottom.[12]
What changed in Malum between versions?
1 part
StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships with Malum 1.8.2 (the file is malum-1.21.1-1.8.2.jar). Malum has been in the pack since StoneBlock 4 1.0.0 or earlier, so it's not a recent addition.[2]
Notable mod changes
- Malum 1.8.2: this is the version in the pack right now. Its changelog only points to the mod's CurseForge page, so I can't tell you what changed in it.[2][13]
- Malum 1.7.3.1: fixed a bug where Spirit Spoils applied itself permanently onto entity spirit data.[14]
Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for Malum, so it's unconfirmed whether any pack release changed Malum's recipes, configs or version beyond what's listed above.
