What is Immersive Engineering?

1 part

Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired, retro-futuristic machines. Instead of glowing tubes, power travels through hanging cables spanned between connectors. Instead of single magic blocks, many machines are big multiblocks. The crusher is a 5x3x3 structure and the excavator is a 3x7x8 structure. The pack includes version 12.4.2-194.[1][2]

It uses the Forge Energy API, but it can be played fully standalone. Power generation comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. If you get lost, the in-game Engineer's Manual is crafted with a book and a lever.[1]

Where it fits in the pack's progression

The quest book sends you into this mod early, in the technology chapter. It starts with the Engineer's Hammer in quest "Immersive Engineering" quest. Two quests branch off it: one for the Coke Brick and one for the Kiln Brick.[3]

How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?

5 parts

In this pack, the quest book puts the first Immersive Engineering steps in the technology chapter. This section follows that order.[3]

Step 1: the Engineer's Hammer

The first quest in the chain, "Immersive Engineering" quest, asks for the Engineer's Hammer. The other quests in the chain come after it, so make it first. The mod also has a "Craft an Engineer's Hammer" advancement.[3][8]

Step 3: Creosote and Treated Wood

The Coke Brick quest is followed by "Treated Wood Planks" quest, which asks for a Bucket of Creosote Oil and Treated Wood Planks. The mod has advancements for collecting Creosote Oil and for crafting Treated Wood. The pack also has a Create spout recipe for Treated Wood Planks, marked as changed by the pack.[3][8][9]

Step 4: the Engineer's Workbench

"Engineer's Workbench" quest comes after the creosote quest and asks for the Engineer's Workbench. The mod describes the workbench as the thing you use to modify your tools.[3][8]

Step 5: engineering blocks and steel structures

The Kiln Brick branch continues with "Crusher" quest. It asks for Light Engineering Block, Redstone Engineering Block, Steel Scaffolding, Steel Fence and a hopper.[3]

How does Immersive Engineering work?

6 parts

Immersive Engineering is built around realism-inspired tech. Instead of one block that magically spits out dust, you get big multiblock machines with moving parts. The Crusher is a 5x3x3 multiblock, and the Excavator is a 3x7x8 monster with a rotating bucketwheel. Here is how the main systems fit together in this pack.[1]

Power: Flux and cables

IE uses the Forge Energy API, so everything is measured in Flux. It can also be played fully standalone. Power does not travel through lanes of adjacent blocks. You span actual cables between connectors, and the wires hang in the world as visible powerlines.[1][8]

If you want to see how a network is doing, the mod's in-game messages report the Flux stored in a block, the average energy transferred over a number of ticks in Flux per tick, and the average loss between points on a wire.[8]

For generation, the mod offers waterwheels, windmills and biodiesel, among others. A Kinetic Dynamo turns the rotation of an attached water- or windmill into energy. Its output is scaled by machines.dynamo_output, which is 3 here (the mod default), and then by the rotation modifier of the wheel.[1][10]

Tip: The Diesel Generator is buffed in this pack. machines.dieselGen_output is 8,192 Flux per tick instead of the mod default of 4,096. The burn time of the fuel still determines the total output.[10]

Storing and moving energy

The three capacitor tiers all use the mod's default values in this pack. Input and output are limited per tick, and the tiers differ in how much they hold:[10]

  • LV capacitor: 256 Flux/tick in, 256 Flux/tick out, 100,000 Flux stored.[10]
  • MV capacitor: 1,024 Flux/tick in, 1,024 Flux/tick out, 1,000,000 Flux stored.[10]
  • HV capacitor: 4,096 Flux/tick in, 4,096 Flux/tick out, 4,000,000 Flux stored.[10]

The Charging Station can insert up to 256 Flux per tick into an item, set by machines.charger_consumption.[10]

Machine speed and cost

Most machines have an energy modifier and a time modifier that scale every recipe for that machine. In this pack the Arc Furnace, Auto Workbench, Bottling Machine, Crusher and Fermenter all keep both at 1, so recipes cost what the mod says. For example, see machines.crusher.energyModifier and machines.crusher.timeModifier.[10]

The Assembler uses 80 Flux to craft an item from a recipe, set by machines.assembler_consumption. That is the mod default.[10]

Multiblocks

The mod tracks forming several multiblocks as advancements: the Arc Furnace, the Crude Blast Furnace, the Improved Blast Furnace, the Diesel Generator and the Metal Press. Large machines like these are what the mod calls "large factories".[8]

The Arc Furnace wears out its Graphite Electrodes while it works. They take 1 damage per tick, and with the default of 96,000 damage they last 8 consecutive in-game days. This pack keeps that default in machines.arc_furnace.electrodeDamage.[10]

The External Heater adds heat to a furnace. It costs 8 Flux per tick per heat, makes up to 4 heat during startup, then 1 heat per tick to keep it running. Once the furnace is at maximum heat, it can spend another 24 Flux per tick to double the furnace's speed.[10]

Finding and digging minerals

The Core Sample Drill draws 40 Flux per tick and needs 200 ticks to work out which mineral is in a chunk. It then reports either a vein with its integrity or no minerals found. These values are the mod defaults in this pack.[8][10]

The Excavator is the big power hog. These are the settings that shape it in this pack, all at the mod defaults:[10]

Automation and control

The mod has several tools for moving items. These include the Conveyor Belt, the Dropping and Extracting Conveyor Belts, the Item Router, the Item Batcher and the Sheetmetal Chutes. An Extracting Conveyor shows how many items per second it will extract.[8]

The Bottling Machine can be switched between holding containers until they are full and allowing partial filling. Several blocks also have redstone control that can be inverted, and some can output a strong redstone signal. Fluid pumps have a toggle for replacing fluid blocks with cobblestone, but the mod warns it can cause lag with large amounts of fluid.[8]

The Floodlight is a small but handy power user. Its settings in this pack, all at the mod defaults:[10]

Unverified The sources I have do not describe how individual multiblocks accept items, fluids and power, such as which ports to use for automation. Check the Engineer's Manual in-game, which you craft with a book and a lever.

How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?

6 parts

Immersive Engineering in this pack is gated by a quest line in the technology chapter. It starts with one tool and branches into two paths: bricks and treated wood on one side, steel-age multiblock parts on the other. The quests have no titles, so this guide names them by the items they ask for.[3]

Tier 1: Hammer and bricks

Everything starts at "Immersive Engineering" quest, which asks for the Engineer's Hammer. Two quests unlock after it. "Coke Oven" quest asks for the Coke Brick. "Alloy Kiln" quest asks for the Kiln Brick.[3]

The pack has altered some routes to the Kiln Brick. The recipe dump marks two Create item-application recipes as changed by the pack: one for the Kiln Brick and one for the Reinforced Blast Brick. The normal crafting recipe for the Kiln Brick is still there too.[9]

Tier 2: Treated wood and the Engineer's Workbench

The coke brick branch continues with "Treated Wood Planks" quest. It wants the Bucket of Creosote Oil and Treated Wood Planks. After that, "Engineer's Workbench" quest asks for the Engineer's Workbench.[3]

Treated Wood Planks have several routes in this pack. Besides the mod's own crafting recipe, the dump lists a Create spout-filling recipe and an Oritech centrifuge recipe, and it marks both of those as changed by the pack.[9]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?

6 parts

Immersive Engineering plugs into a lot of the pack's other mods, mostly through recipes the pack adds or rewrites. Here's where you'll bump into it outside its own machines.[9]

Plates need the Engineer's Hammer

The pack adds shapeless crafting recipes that turn ingots into plates with the Engineer's Hammer. The plates themselves are items from the pack's materials set, not from Immersive Engineering. Aluminum, brass, bronze, constantan, copper, electrum, gold, invar, iron, lead, nickel, silver, steel and zinc all get one. The hammer is also the very first task in the technology quest chain, "Immersive Engineering" quest.[3][9]

The steel plate is one of the items the first World Engine tier quest asks for.

Hemp, soils and the Garden Cloche

The pack adds cloche recipes for Industrial Hemp Fiber that run on Rich Soil from Farmer's Delight. There are also versions for each of the four Just Dire Things goo soils, from Primogel Soil to Shadowpulse Soil. The cloche itself has a quest in the resource generation chapter, "Garden Cloches" quest.[6][9]

Industrial Hemp Seeds also shows up in the Unearthed archaeologist dirt recipes, next to pebbles, grass seed and several vanilla crops. Farmer's Delight's cabbage and tomato seed squeezer recipes, which involve Plant Oil, are marked as changed by the pack too.[9]

Fuels and the refinery

The pack adds two refinery recipes. One turns Molten Carbon from Productive Metalworks into Biodiesel. The other turns Oritech's Heavy Oil into High-Cetane Biodiesel.[9]

The Electrum Coil Block is one of the parts in ProjectE's Swiftwolf's Rending Gale, and Oritech's centrifuge has a pack-changed recipe that turns HOP Graphite Dust into Carbon Fibre Strands.[6][9]

Quests that mix Immersive Engineering with other mods

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Immersive Engineering?

3 parts

Immersive Engineering shows up in several quest chapters in the pack. The main path is the technology chapter, and the other chapters have single quests that ask for one of its items. The quest data has no titles for these quests, so I describe each one by what it asks for.[3][4][5][6][7][11][12]

Technology chapter

This chapter starts with the Engineer's Hammer. After that first quest it splits into two branches.[3]

  1. Quest "Immersive Engineering" quest is the starting point. It asks for the Engineer's Hammer.[3]
  2. Coke oven branch: quest "Coke Oven" quest comes after the hammer quest. It has an observation task and asks for the Coke Brick. Quest "Treated Wood Planks" quest follows and asks for the Bucket of Creosote Oil and Treated Wood Planks. Quest "Engineer's Workbench" quest finishes the branch with the Engineer's Workbench.[3]
  3. Alloy kiln and steel branch: quest "Alloy Kiln" quest also comes after the hammer quest. It asks for the Kiln Brick and has an observation task. Quest "Crusher" quest follows. It has an observation task and asks for the Light Engineering Block, Redstone Engineering Block, Steel Scaffolding, Steel Fence and a hopper.[3]
  4. Quest "Arc Furnace" quest is the last one in that branch. It has an observation task and asks for the Heavy Engineering Block, Light Engineering Block, Redstone Engineering Block, Steel Sheetmetal, a steel block, the Reinforced Blast Brick, the Steel Sheetmetal Slab, Steel Scaffolding and a cauldron.[3]

Power chapter

The power chapter has Immersive Engineering quests too. The quest data shows no prerequisite for any of them.[4]

Other chapters

In these chapters Immersive Engineering items appear as one requirement among several.[5][6][7][11][12]

Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?

5 parts

Good news: Immersive Engineering is almost entirely at its mod defaults in this pack. In the server config, only one value is marked as changed from the mod default, so what you learn from the Engineer's Manual mostly applies as written.[10]

The one change: Diesel Generator output

machines.dieselGen_output is set to 8,192 Flux per tick in this pack. The mod default is 4,096, so the pack doubles it. The config notes that the burn time of the fuel determines the total output.[10]

Tip: Don't copy power budgets from other packs or guides written for the mod defaults without checking this value. Here the Diesel Generator outputs 8,192 Flux per tick instead of 4,096.[10]

Wires and capacitors (all mod defaults)

Wire stats are unchanged from the mod. Copper wire has a transfer rate of 2,048 IF/t and a max length of 16, electrum wire has 8,192 IF/t and a max length of 16, and HV wire has 32,768 IF/t and a max length of 32. Their connector input rates are 256, 1,024 and 4,096 respectively.[10]

  • LV capacitor: 100,000 Flux storage, 256 Flux/tick in and out.[10]
  • MV capacitor: 1,000,000 Flux storage, 1,024 Flux/tick in and out.[10]
  • HV capacitor: 4,000,000 Flux storage, 4,096 Flux/tick in and out.[10]
  • wires.enableWireDamage and wires.blocksBreakWires are both true, so live wires hurt entities touching them, and placing a block in a wire breaks it and drops the wire coil.[10]

Excavator and ore generation (all mod defaults)

The Excavator uses 4,096 Flux per tick to dig, set by machines.excavator.consumption. A chunk can give at most 38,400 yield through machines.excavator.yield. A new vein can start with a random amount depleted, up to 0.2 as a decimal value, set by machines.excavator.initial_depletion. The particle effect is left on, and you can switch it off with machines.excavator.particles if it hurts your frame rate.[10]

  • Lead: Y -32 to 80, 12 attempts per chunk, vein size 8.[10]
  • Silver: Y -48 to 32, 10 attempts per chunk, vein size 9, 0.25 air exposure.[10]
  • Nickel: Y -64 to 24, evenly distributed, 7 attempts per chunk, vein size 5.[10]
  • Deep nickel: Y -120 to -8, 11 attempts per chunk, vein size 6.[10]
  • Uranium: Y -64 to -16, 9 attempts per chunk, vein size 4, 0.5 air exposure.[10]
  • Bauxite: Y 32 to 112, 16 attempts per chunk, vein size 6.[10]

Retro-generation is off for every ore, so ores won't appear in chunks that were already generated.[10]

Machine speed and cost

The energy and time modifiers for the Arc Furnace, Crusher, Metal Press, Mixer, Squeezer, Sawmill and the other machines that have them are all 1, so there is no pack-wide multiplier on recipe cost or time. Graphite Electrodes also keep their default of 96,000 damage, which the config says is 8 consecutive in-game days of work.[10]

Client options

The client file is for your own game and not for the pack's balance. enableVBO is on for faster rendering, and showTextOverlay is on so you can see capacitor and pump settings in the world. increasedTileRenderdistance is 1.5, which makes windmills visible from further away, and manualGuiScale is 4.[13]

Tip: If turrets or garden cloches cost you FPS, try setting disableFancyTESR to true. It is false right now. On an older GPU, stencilBufferEnabled can be switched off.[13]

What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?

3 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelog for the version you're playing.[2][14]

New features

  • The item router can now filter by mod as well as by tags.[14]
  • There's a new item hatch, which lets you pull a single stack from an inventory.[14]
  • Cloche recipes can now specify a fluid. If a recipe doesn't specify one, it uses water. Crimson and warped fungi are now grown with lava.[14]

Changed behavior

  • Extracting conveyors now have a configurable stack size instead of a configurable tick rate.[14]
  • The storage shelf has new insertion logic. It tries to fill slots that already hold the same item, and otherwise places the item in the slots right after it. This keeps the individual crates on the shelf more organized, and it works for both shift-clicking and automatic insertion.[14]
  • Illager loot tables changed. Fusiliers and bulwarks now respect looting, and commandos no longer drop emeralds.[14]
Watch out: Because extracting conveyors switched from a tick rate to a stack size, existing conveyors need to be adjusted again.[14]

Fixes

  • The mixer no longer accidentally crafts a lingering awkward potion.[14]
  • Catwalks now work properly when you use a hammer on them.[14]
  • Shift-click behavior in the Engineer's Crafting Table is fixed.[14]
  • Chutes now accept item input from the side.[14]
  • Engineer illagers now drop their raid banner.[14]
  • Shelves no longer crash the game when accessed from unexpected sides.[14]
  • Windows used in multiblocks are less directionally dependent.[14]
  • The backpack antenna now visually disconnects from wires.[14]
