Just Dire Things is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 1.5.7. A collection of Random Blocks and Items for Automation (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Just Dire Things?

2 parts

Just Dire Things is a tech-and-gear mod, and this pack ships version 1.5.7. It covers automation machines, tools and armor that accept upgrades, portable power, and a handful of utility items. If you like building automation and want a gear path that grows with your base, this mod is for you.[1][2][3][4][5]

The goo progression

The core of the mod is goo. You place a goo block, feed it to activate it, then put an eligible block next to it to transform that block. Higher tiers can do everything lower tiers can, and they work faster.[6]

The pack's technology quests follow this same order. They start at "Just Dire Things" quest, run through each goo tier, and finish with Time Crystal.[11]

Gear, power and automation

Each resource tier has matching tools and armor, and the pack's gearing quests ask for pieces from Ferricore up to Eclipse Alloy. You can install upgrades on them at a smithing table.[12][13]

The Celestigem and Eclipse Alloy armor runs on Forge Energy. Celestigem pieces hold 10,000 FE and Eclipse Alloy pieces hold 500,000 FE. The Pocket Generator is the portable way to keep them charged.[14][15][16]

On the automation side, the pack has a quest for the Simple tier machines such as Simple Block Breaker and Simple Block Placer. The power chapter covers Simple Coal Generator and Simple Fuel Generator. The Energy Transmitter quest unlocks after you finish the VoidShimmer Goo quest.[17][18]

The pack also has quests for a few handy extras: Item Collector, Creature Catcher, Time Wand, Experience Holder and the Portal Gun. Several of these accept another mod's item as an alternative.[19][20]

Unverified No link between this mod and the ATM Star quest path was found in the sources, so it is not treated as part of that path here.

How do you get started with Just Dire Things?

6 parts

Just Dire Things is built around one idea: you grow your own materials with goo, then turn them into tools, armor and machines. So your first job is to get the goo going. The pack's technology quest chain follows the same order, so you can follow along in your quest book.[6][11]

Step 1: Primogel Goo

Start by crafting Primogel Goo. It's made from simple Overworld materials, and it can turn Iron into Ferricore. This is also the first quest in the technology chapter: "Just Dire Things" quest.[7][11]

  1. Craft a goo block and place it in your world.[6]
  2. Activate the goo by feeding it the resource it consumes. The goo block shows you which one.[6]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo to start the transformation.[6]
Tip: After a transformation there's a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating with another item. While it's inactive it can't start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes.[6]

The next quest, "Goo Transmutations" quest, asks for Raw Ferricore and a Ferricore Ingot. You'll need those ingots for the simple machines below.[11][21]

Step 2: Climb the goo tiers

Each goo tier unlocks the next material, and higher tiers can do everything the lower ones can, only faster. The pack's quests follow this path.[6][11]

Step 3: Simple machines

Once you have Ferricore, you can make the simple automation machines. Simple versions need no power and usually affect only the block or entity directly in front of them. You control their speed with the Speed(ticks) button. The pack changed the recipes for the Simple Block Breaker and the Simple Block Placer, so use these ones rather than anything you remember from other packs.[21][22]

Advanced machines are much stronger, covering bigger areas with filters, but they need power.[22]

Step 4: Gear and upgrades

Every material tier has its own tools and armor. You can craft a new tier directly, or upgrade the previous tier in a smithing table with the matching template, and the installed upgrades are kept when you do it. For example, here is the template upgrade for a Blazegold pickaxe.[13][21][23]

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: justdirethings:blazegold_pickaxe-templateupgrade

A smithing table recipe that upgrades a Ferricore pickaxe.

Hold Shift on a tool to see which upgrades it can take. Shift-click the tool in your hand to open its settings. Blazegold armor can also be fully repaired by dropping it into a lava source block.[23][24][25][26][27]

Step 5: Power

Celestigem armor stores 10,000 FE, so you'll need a power source. The Pocket Generator is a portable option that burns coal or this mod's upgraded coals, and higher tier fuels give more energy per tick. The power chapter also has quests for the Simple Coal Generator and Simple Fuel Generator.[14][16][18]

Later: Time Crystal

The last quest in the technology chapter asks for a Time Crystal. In this pack it comes from a chicken roost recipe added by the pack, shown below.[11][21]

How does Just Dire Things work?

9 parts

Most machines in Just Dire Things come in two variants, a simple version and an advanced version. Knowing how those two differ explains a lot of the mod.[22]

Simple vs. advanced machines

Simple machines don't need power. They usually only affect the block or entity directly in front of them, and you control how fast they work with the Speed (ticks) button. Advanced machines are much stronger but need power. They can usually affect a large area you set in the UI, they have filters, and they automatically charge any Forge Energy items you put inside them.[22]

The pack leaves the slowest allowed machine speed at the mod default. The setting general.minimum_machine_tick_speed is 1, which means machines can be set to run every tick.[28]

Area and filters

On an advanced machine, click 'Render area' to see the affected space in the world. The RAD button changes the radius. The OFF button moves the centre of the area by changing the block offset. Test both with 'Render area' turned on.[29]

Most advanced machines have a row of filter slots for items, blocks or entities. You can drag entries in from JEI, or click a slot with a stack in your hand while the GUI is open. To filter entities, use a spawn egg or a Creature Catcher. The allow/deny button flips the list: in allow mode only the listed entries are affected, and in deny mode everything except them is. Compare NBT makes the filter stricter, for example matching a specific sheep colour via a Creature Catcher.[29]

Breakers, placers and swappers

The Simple Block Breaker needs a tool to break the block it faces. It can't work without one, and it damages the tool (or uses its power) on every break, just as a player would. The Advanced Block Breaker covers a much larger area. Its filter can work in 'filter block' mode, which picks the blocks to break, or in 'filter items' mode, which picks the drops to allow. The direction button matters if your tool has a hammer-style ability, because it sets which face you hit.[30][31]

The Simple Block Placer places the block held in its inventory into the space in front of it when powered, and the direction button sets which way it places. The Advanced Block Placer adds filters for which blocks it may place onto. That filter respects the direction setting, so with 'down' it only places on top of the filtered blocks.[32][33]

The pack changed the crafting recipes of the simple machines shown below, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[21]

Swappers work in pairs. Place two, then right-click the first and the second with a Ferricore Wrench. A message confirms they're bound, and the UI shows a green button for the link. A swapper can swap the blocks in front of the pair, which works with block entities like chests, and it can swap entities too. The Advanced Swapper adds an area and filters. When it's bound to a partner, a radius change on one copies to the other.[34][35]

Power

The Simple Coal Generator burns any furnace fuel, or the mod's specialised coals. Higher coal tiers (Primal Coal, Blaze Ember, Voidflame Coal, Eclipse Ember) give more FE per tick and more total FE. In the pack, its output is 1,000 FE per tick (generator_t1.generator_t1_fe_per_tick), with a buffer of 1,000,000 FE (generator_t1.generator_t1_max_fe). It makes 15 FE per burn tick of fuel (generator_t1.generator_t1_fe_per_fuel_tick), and its burn speed multiplier is 4 (generator_t1.generator_t1_burn_speed_multiplier). All of these match the mod defaults.[28][36]

The Simple Fuel Generator uses refined fuels instead, in 3 tiers. The pack settings for the fluid-fuel generator are 5,000 FE per tick (generator_fluid_t1.generator_fluid_t1_fe_per_tick) and a 5,000,000 FE buffer (generator_fluid_t1.generator_fluid_t1_max_fe), both at the mod default.[28][37]

Tip: The pack doubled the fluid fuel values. Blaze Ember gives 900 FE per mb (generator_fluid_t1.fuel_tier2_fe_per_mb, default 450). Voidflame gives 2,600 (generator_fluid_t1.fuel_tier3_fe_per_mb, default 1,300). Eclipse Ember gives 8,000 (generator_fluid_t1.fuel_tier4_fe_per_mb, default 4,000).[28]

The Pocket Generator is the portable option for keeping Forge Energy tools and armor charged. Feed it coal or the mod's upgraded coals, and higher tiers give more FE per tick. It accepts the Fuel Canister too.[16]

The Fuel Canister stores fuel in bulk. Any fuel works except lava buckets, and you can't get the fuel back out once it's inside. It can then feed furnaces and generators, so you don't burn a whole coal for one ore. Fuel from this mod also carries a fuel multiplier, which is averaged with whatever is already in the canister. The tooltip shows the multiplier you'd get in a Pocket Generator or Generator. In the pack the canister holds up to 10,000,000 ticks of fuel (fuel_canister.fuel_canister_maximum_fuel) and 'consumes' 200 ticks per furnace operation (fuel_canister.fuel_canister_minimum_ticks_consumed). Both are mod defaults.[28][38]

Solar panels generate Forge Energy from conditions. The in-game guide lists these default maximum rates: Ferricore 240 FE, Blazegold 960, Celestigem 3,840 and Eclipse Alloy 11,520. Each panel has its own default conditions, such as dimension, sky access or time of day. For Celestigem and Eclipse Alloy panels, more panels nearby means more output. The guide itself warns that everything can be changed in configs.[39]

Wireless energy

The Energy Transmitter sends power from your generators to machines without cables. Connect it to a generator so its internal buffer fills. Then set its area of effect, and every block in that area that can accept Forge Energy gets filled from the buffer. You can also filter which machines receive power. A small amount of energy is lost on this wireless transfer, as a balance cost. Transmitters inside each other's area balance themselves with no loss.[40]

The pack keeps the mod defaults here: a 1,000,000 buffer (energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_max_rf), 1,000 per tick to machines and other transmitters (energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_rf_per_tick), and a loss of 1 percent per block of distance (energy_transmitter_t1.energy_transmitter_t1_loss_per_block).[28][40]

Fluids

The Simple Fluid Collector tries to collect any fluid in front of it into its internal buffer, which holds only 1 fluid at a time. Its item slot can fill a bucket or a Fluid Canister. The Advanced Fluid Collector covers a bigger area, and you filter it by putting buckets of the wanted fluids in its filter slots.[41][42]

The Simple Fluid Placer takes buckets or fluid containers such as the Fluid Canister. It places a fluid only when enough is stored and nothing is already in front of it. The Advanced Fluid Placer works over a larger area and uses filter slots to choose which blocks it places fluids onto.[43][44]

The Fluid Canister holds up to 8 buckets. Right-click to place or pick up liquid like a bucket. Shift right-click cycles auto-fill between None, Just Dire Things items only, and ALL, which includes other mods' fluid holders.[45]

The Experience Holder is also a fluid tank. It converts experience into XP Fluid at 20mb per experience point, and you can use a bucket, a Fluid Canister, or pipes and Laserio to move that fluid. It keeps its experience when broken. Its area of effect can top up nearby players to a target level, on a pulse or always, and its Collect Experience button absorbs nearby XP orbs.[46]

Items, inventories and redstone

  • The Item Collector works like an advanced machine even though it's made from tier 1 resources. It vacuums item entities in its area into the inventory it's attached to, with filters and an adjustable pickup speed.[47]
  • The Simple Dropper drops in a chosen direction. Its number button sets the stack size dropped, and 64 drops as many items as it has. Its pickup delay defaults to 0.[48]
  • The Advanced Dropper has a 3x3 item grid. You can't change its radius, but you can change its offset. Its filter slots also set the drop order, and it stops dropping when it runs out of the next item in line.[49]
  • The Simple Clicker simulates right-click, left-click or hold-click with whatever item is in its slot, or with nothing for pressing buttons. Its target button picks blocks, air, hostile, passive, adult, child, player or all living. The Advanced Clicker adds a bigger area and filters, which suits mob farms and animal breeders.[50][51]
  • The Simple Sensor emits a redstone signal when its target is found in its area. The target can be blocks, air, hostile, passive, adult, child, player, all living, or items. It can emit a strong or weak signal. Set it to allow mode when you're targeting a block.[52]
  • The Advanced Sensor can count matches. By default it signals when there's more than 0.[53]
  • The Player Accessor lets hoppers or pipes insert into and extract from a player's inventory. Each side can be assigned to different slots, for example armor on the top face and the offhand on the bottom.[54]
  • The Inventory Holder acts like a chest shaped like your player inventory. You can lock a slot to an item with Ctrl-click, and 'Filtered Items Only' and 'Compare Stack Sizes' also control what pipes and hoppers may insert or extract.[55]
  • The Machine Settings Copier copies a machine's settings with shift-right-click and pastes them onto another machine with right-click, which saves a lot of clicking when you build several matching machines.[56]

Goo

Goo transforms blocks placed next to it, and each tier can convert stronger blocks into new resources. Primogel turns Iron into Ferricore, Blazebloom turns Gold into Blazegold, VoidShimmer turns Diamonds into Celestigem, and Shadowpulse turns Netherite into Eclipse Alloy.[6][7][8][9][10]

  1. Craft a goo block and place it in the world.[6]
  2. Activate it by feeding it the resource it asks for, which the goo block indicates.[6]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo to start the transformation.[6]

Goo can go inactive after a conversion. In this pack, goo.goo_can_die is true and goo.goo_death_chance is 0.1, a 10% chance, both at the mod default. An inactive goo can't start new conversions, but the ones already running finish. Higher tier goo can do everything lower tiers can, and does it much faster. The Stabilizer can revive any goo on top of it using Forge Energy.[6][28][57]

Time and the Paradox Machine

The Ticker Block speeds up blocks to 16x normal tick rate. The Time Wand needs both Forge Energy and Time Fluid. Each right-click on a ticking block doubles its speed (twice as fast, then 4x, then 8x and so on), and each step costs both resources. The boost lasts 30 seconds.[58][59]

The Paradox Machine snapshots an area, and later restores the blocks and entities you cleared from it. Only raw ores work as blocks. You set the area, place what you want saved, and click 'snapshot'. Restoring costs a lot of power and Time Fluid, and a button switches between entities only, blocks only, or both. Restored entities may not be exactly identical to the originals.[60]

Watch out: Overusing the Paradox Machine builds up Paradox energy, shown on its UI, and extended use can cause a Paradox to appear. In the pack the buffer limit is 100 (paradox_machine.paradox_energy_max, the mod default), and a Paradox spawns when that buffer is exceeded. The Paradox Mixer needs at least one energized Stabilizer to stay active.[28][57][60][61]

How do you progress through Just Dire Things?

4 parts

Just Dire Things progression in this pack is a four-step ladder of materials: Ferricore, Blazegold, Celestigem and Eclipse Alloy. Each step is unlocked by its own goo block, which transforms a vanilla resource into the next material. Iron becomes Ferricore, gold becomes Blazegold, diamonds become Celestigem and Netherite becomes Eclipse Alloy.[7][8][9][10]

The goo ladder

The technology quest chain follows the goo tiers in order, and each quest unlocks after the previous one. Here is the path:[11]

  1. Start with Primogel Goo (quest "Just Dire Things" quest). It turns iron into Ferricore, and the next quest, "Goo Transmutations" quest, asks for an iron block, Raw Ferricore and a Ferricore Ingot.[7][11]
  2. Move on to Blazebloom Goo, which turns gold into Blazegold. Quest "Creating Blazegold" quest asks for the goo and Raw Blazegold.[8][11]
  3. Next is VoidShimmer Goo, which turns diamonds into Celestigem. Quest "Making Celestigems" quest asks for the goo and a Celestigem.[9][11]
  4. Finish with Shadowpulse Goo, which turns Netherite into Eclipse Alloy. Quest "Ore of the Eclipse" quest asks for the goo and Raw Eclipse Alloy.[10][11]
  5. The last quest in the chain, "Time Crystals" quest, asks for a Time Crystal.[11]

To use goo, place the block, feed it the resource it consumes, then put an eligible block next to it. After a transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating by feeding it another item. Higher-tier goo can do everything lower tiers can, and does it much faster.[6]

The pack adds its own way to get the Time Crystal: a Chicken Roost recipe where a Timey Wimey Chicken produces it.[21]

Time CrystalAdded by the pack

Roost Output (chicken_roost)

Tools and armor

Every material tier has a matching set of tools and armor, and the gearing_up quests follow the same order. Ferricore or Blazegold armor satisfies "Just Dire's Armor" quest, while Celestigem armor is "Celestigem Armor" quest and Eclipse Alloy armor is "Eclipse Alloy Armor" quest. Tools and weapons follow the same pattern with "Just Dire Things Tools" quest, "Just Dire's Weaponry" quest, "Celestigem Weapons" quest and "Eclipse Alloy Weapons" quest.[12][13][23]

You can craft each piece directly from its material, or upgrade the previous tier's piece at a smithing table using the matching template. Each tier has its own template, such as Template: Blazegold and Template: Celestigem. Here are two examples of the upgrade path:[21]

Bows follow the same ladder from Ferricore Bow through Blazegold Bow and Celestigem Bow up to Eclipse Alloy Bow.[21]

Celestigem Bow to Eclipse Alloy Bow.

The two top tiers also have paxels, and the quests "Celestigem Tools" quest and "Eclipse Alloy Tools" quest ask for them. The Celestigem Paxel is made from the matching axe, pickaxe and shovel.[12][21]

Tip: Upgrading in the smithing table keeps the upgrades you've already installed on a tool or armor piece. Hold shift to check a tool's tooltip for which upgrades it supports.[13][23]

Machines and power

Most machines come in a simple and an advanced version. Simple ones need no power but only affect the block or entity directly in front of them. Advanced ones need power, cover a large area and have filters.[22]

The pack changed the recipes of several simple machines, so don't rely on the mod's defaults. The automation quest a quest in "Logistics & Automation" accepts any of the simple placers, droppers, breakers, collectors or clickers.[17][21]

How does Just Dire Things work with other mods?

2 parts

Just Dire Things connects to the rest of the pack in two main ways: its goo soils feed Immersive Engineering cloche recipes, and several quests accept its items as an alternative to items from other mods.[19][21][63]

Goo soils in the Immersive Engineering cloche

The pack adds a set of cloche recipes that use the four Just Dire Things soils: Primogel Soil, Blazebloom Soil, VoidShimmer Soil and Shadowpulse Soil. Each crop recipe exists once per soil tier, so any of the four soils works for every crop listed below.[21]

Crops you can grow this way come from several mods: Cabbage from Farmer's Delight, Canola Plant and Coffee Beans from Actually Additions, Flax from Supplementaries, Demon's Dream from Occultism, and Industrial Hemp Fiber from Immersive Engineering itself.[21]

Magic crops are covered too. Ars Nouveau gives you Magebloom, Bastion Fruit, Bombegranate and Frostaya, and Ars Elemental adds Flashpine. Chicken Roost's Chicken Seed Tier 1 through Chicken Seed Tier 9 have cloche recipes with the goo soils as well.[21]

Here is one example, cabbage on the first-tier soil:[21]

CabbageAdded by the pack

Cloche (immersiveengineering)

Recipe id: ftb:cloche/cabbage_from_goosoil_tier1

Tip: These cloche recipes are added by the pack, so you won't find them in the mods' own defaults. Check JEI for the exact inputs and output of the crop you want.[21]

Quests that accept either mod

Some quests let you pick between a Just Dire Things item and a similar item from another mod. You can finish them with whichever you prefer.[19][63]

The Just Dyna Things addon is also mentioned in the mod's in-game guide as an addition to Just Dire Things that brings more content and quality-of-life features.[64]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Just Dire Things?

4 parts

Just Dire Things turns up in quests across several chapters of the pack: technology, gearing up, power, useful items tips, exploration and combat, processing and automation, and world engine tier 1. These quests have no titles in the quest files, so I refer to them by quest ID. The technology chapter is the only one where the sources show a clear chain, so start there.[11][12][17][18][19][20][63]

Technology: the goo and material chain

This chapter walks you up the mod's material tiers. After the first quest, each one unlocks after the one before it. Most quests pair a goo block with that tier's raw material.[11]

  1. "Just Dire Things" quest asks for Primogel Goo.[11]
  2. "Goo Transmutations" quest asks for an iron block, Raw Ferricore and a Ferricore Ingot.[11]
  3. "Creating Blazegold" quest asks for Blazebloom Goo and Raw Blazegold.[11]
  4. "Making Celestigems" quest asks for VoidShimmer Goo and Celestigem.[11]
  5. "Ore of the Eclipse" quest asks for Shadowpulse Goo and Raw Eclipse Alloy.[11]
  6. "Time Crystals" quest asks for the Time Crystal.[11]

Gearing up: tools, weapons and armor

This chapter asks for gear from each material tier. Where a task lists several items with "or", any one of them counts.[12]

None of the quests in this chapter list a prerequisite in the quest files, so nothing there forces an order on you.[12]

Which Just Dire Things config options matter?

6 parts

Just Dire Things splits its settings across a common file, a server file and a client file in this pack. Most of what you'll care about is power numbers, tool limits and a few machine behaviors, and almost all of them match the mod defaults.[28][65][66]

What the pack changed

The common file raises the energy you get from the fluid generator's fuels. Each of these is double the mod default.[28]

The common file also sets abilities.eclipsegate to false, while every other ability toggle there is true.[28]

The server file tells a different story for the same options, so check which file you are editing. There abilities.eclipsegate is true, and the fluid generator fuels sit at their mod defaults:[66]

Tool block limits

The maximum number of blocks an ability like ore miner or tree feller can break depends on the tool tier. Ferricore tools get 64, Blazegold 128, Celestigem 192 and Eclipse Alloy 256. All four match the mod defaults and can be set anywhere from 1 to 2,048. The options are abilities.tool_max_break_ferricore, abilities.tool_max_break_blazegold, abilities.tool_max_break_celestigem and abilities.tool_max_break_eclipsealloy.[28][66]

Generators

These generator values all match the mod defaults.[28]

Time Wand

Paradox Machine

Watch out: paradox_machine.paradox_restricted_mobs is false. The option's own description says that leaves a small chance of item dupe bugs with cloned mobs, and recommends adding dupe-prone mobs to the machine's deny entity tag instead of turning the option on.[28]

Goo, Time Crystals and the overlay

Goo can die when it finishes crafting. goo.goo_can_die is true and goo.goo_death_chance is 0.1, a 10% chance. Time Crystals use normal growth rules, because time_crystal.time_crystal_custom_dimensions is false.[28]

If the cooldown overlay sits in a bad spot on your screen, the client file lets you move it. overlay_position.overlay_x_position is 91 and overlay_position.overlay_y_position is 70, both mod defaults.[65]
