What is FTB Materials?

1 part

FTB Materials is the pack's source of metal and material items such as ingots, plates, dusts, wires and storage blocks. This pack includes version 21.1.4. The sources here show the mod only through quest tasks, so this overview covers where its items turn up in the quest book.[1][2][3][4]

Where the quest book uses it

The pack's quest book has no FTB Materials chapter of its own. Its items appear as tasks inside chapters for other mods and systems, usually next to an item from that chapter's own mod.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

Steel shows up the most, as an ingot, a plate and a block, across four quests in four chapters. Every quest listed here names at least one earlier quest that unlocks it, except the oritech nickel quest, which lists none.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

Unverified Whether the ATM Star quest path uses FTB Materials is not shown in the sources here, so check the pack's quest book for that.

How do you get started with FTB Materials?

7 parts

FTB Materials adds metals and plates such as brass, steel, nickel and gold plate, and the pack's quests ask for them in several chapters. The pack has added or changed many of its recipes, so you can often make the same item in more than one machine. Pick whichever mod you're already using. Here is the order I'd go in.[2][3][9]

Brass Ingot first

Brass Ingot shows up in the technology chapter, where "Mechanical Crafter" quest asks for it together with a Mechanical Crafter. It also appears in world engine tier 1, where "Basic Casings" quest wants it alongside a Brass Casing. The pack changed the Create mixing recipe for it, so this is the one to follow:[2][3][9]

2× Brass IngotChanged by the pack

Mixing (create)

  • any copper ingot
  • any zinc ingot

Recipe id: create:mixing/brass_ingot

If you aren't on Create yet, the pack also added brass alloy recipes in Immersive Engineering, Ender IO and Oritech.[9]

Gold Plate next

Next up is Gold Plate. In the technology chapter, a quest in "General Tech" asks for it along with a Create Mechanical Press. The pack added a Create pressing recipe for it:[2][9]

Gold PlateAdded by the pack

Pressing (create)

  • any gold ingot

Recipe id: ftb:create/pressing/plate/gold

The pack also added a shapeless crafting recipe and an Immersive Engineering metal press recipe for the same plate. It is worth having a stack ready, because the pack changed Create's precision mechanism and control chip assemblies, and both use gold plates.[9]

Steel

Steel Ingot is requested by the Mekanism chapter quest "Making Steel" quest, which also asks for enriched iron. The pack changed several steel recipes. The Immersive Engineering Blast Furnace is a good starting point:[4][9]

Steel IngotChanged by the pack

Blast Furnace (immersiveengineering)

  • any iron ingot
  • any slag

Recipe id: immersiveengineering:blastfurnace/steel

The pack also changed steel recipes for the Arc Furnace, Create mixing, Ender IO and Oritech. Once you have plenty of ingots, Block of Steel is one of the items in "Arc Furnace" quest, a technology quest that lists several Immersive Engineering blocks.[2][9]

Steel Plate and Electrum Wire

Steel Plate is in "Reinforcing Machine Frames" quest together with Electrum Wire, and again in the bounty board quest "Basic Plating Trade" quest. The pack added this plate recipe for Create's press:[3][5][9]

  • any gold wire

Recipe id: createaddition:charging/electrify_gold_wire

Obsidian Plate

The world engine tier 1 quest "Shaping Obsidian" quest asks for a Lava Bucket and an Obsidian Plate. The pack changed the Create sequenced assembly that produces the plate:[3][9]

Recipe id: create:sequenced_assembly/sturdy_sheet

Nickel

Nickel Ingot is requested by the Oritech chapter quest "Welcome To Oritech!" quest. Nickel comes in four ore variants: Nickel Ore, Deepslate Nickel Ore, Nether Nickel Ore and Endstone Nickel Ore. You can also smelt Raw Nickel and Nickel Cluster. The pack changed all of these smelting and blasting recipes. Here is the one for the plain ore:[7][9]

Nickel IngotChanged by the pack

Smelting

Recipe id: ftbmaterials:nickel_ingot_from_smelting_nickel_stone_ore

Later on

A few more materials turn up further in. Lithium Dust is the task of "Lithium Dust" quest in the Mekanism chapter, and the pack changed its Mekanism crystallizing recipe. Refined Obsidian Ingot is one of the tasks in "Creative Toggleable Laser" quest in the creative chapter. Plutonium Dust is part of "Particle Acceleration" quest in world engine tier 5.[4][6][8][9]

Unverified The mod's lang file has no tooltips or descriptions, so the sources here do not show any in-game explanation of how each material is meant to be used beyond the quests and recipes above.

How does FTB Materials work?

3 parts

Here's the honest picture for FTB Materials in this pack: every recipe the sources show for it is a crafting-grid recipe (shaped or shapeless). They describe plates, metal storage conversions and dust conversions, and nothing about machines, multiblocks, power or fluids, so this section covers what the recipes do show.[9]

Plates

Plates such as Iron Plate, Copper Plate, Steel Plate and Aluminum Plate come from shapeless crafting recipes that the pack added. Each one takes an Engineer's Hammer plus any ingot in the matching metal's ingot tag, so you don't need a separate machine for them.[9]

Aluminum PlateAdded by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ftb:crafting/plates/aluminum

The aluminum plate recipe, added by the pack. The other plate recipes use the same pattern with a different metal's ingot.

The same pattern covers Brass Plate, Bronze Plate, Constantan Plate, Electrum Plate, Gold Plate, Invar Plate, Lead Plate, Nickel Plate, Silver Plate and Zinc Plate.[9]

Compressing and uncompressing metals

Aluminum has a full set of storage conversions, and the pack changed these recipes. Aluminum Nugget and Aluminum Ingot convert into each other, and ingots pack into a Block of Aluminum, which unpacks back into an ingot. Raw aluminum packs into a Block of Raw Aluminum and unpacks again. These recipes accept items through shared tags, so equivalent items from other mods are accepted.[9]

Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: ftbmaterials:aluminum_block

Antimony follows the same chain: Antimony Nugget to Antimony Ingot to Block of Antimony, and back down again. Unlike the aluminum recipes, these antimony recipes name the mod's own items directly rather than using tags.[9]

Dusts have a similar relationship with their tiny versions. Tiny Aluminum Dust converts to and from Aluminum Dust, and Tiny Antimony Dust converts into Antimony Dust. All of these are crafting-grid recipes changed by the pack.[9]

There is also a crafting recipe, changed by the pack, that turns an Aluminum Chunk into an Aluminum Cluster.[9]

Items shared with other mods

Some FTB Materials items are produced by other mods' recipes, and the pack changed them. Block of Electrum and Electrum Nugget are crafted from the Create Additions electrum ingot. Silicon Gem comes from unpacking the Extended AE silicon block.[9]

9× Silicon GemChanged by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: extendedae:silicon_decompress

Unpacking a silicon block into silicon gems, a recipe changed by the pack.

Tip: Many of the aluminum conversions accept tagged items rather than one specific item, so you aren't locked into a single mod's ingot, nugget or block.[9]

How do you progress through FTB Materials?

5 parts

FTB Materials items turn up as task items in quests from other mods' chapters, so the progression below follows those quests, from early plates to later materials. Most of these quests are untitled, so I refer to them by their ids.[2][3][4]

Early game: plates and brass

Your first FTB Materials goal is the Gold Plate. Quest a quest in "General Tech" in the technology chapter asks for it together with a Create mechanical press. The pack adds a few ways to make it: a shapeless craft with an Engineer's Hammer and a gold ingot, pressing a gold ingot, or casting it with a plate cast and molten gold.[2][9]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ftb:crafting/plates/gold

The hammer route, added by the pack.

Right next to it, quest "Mechanical Crafter" quest wants a Brass Ingot and a Create mechanical crafter. The pack changed Create's brass mixing recipe so that it outputs the FTB Materials brass ingot.[2][9]

2× Brass IngotChanged by the pack

Mixing (create)

  • any copper ingot
  • any zinc ingot

Recipe id: create:mixing/brass_ingot

The pack also adds brass alloying for Immersive Engineering, Ender IO and Oritech, and you can smelt or blast Brass Dust into an ingot. The Engineer's Hammer turns ingots into aluminum, brass, bronze, constantan and copper plates too, all added by the pack.[9]

World Engine tier 1

The first World Engine tier uses several FTB Materials items. Quest "Basic Casings" quest asks for a brass ingot and a Create brass casing. Quest "Shaping Obsidian" quest asks for a lava bucket and an Obsidian Plate.[3]

The obsidian plate comes from a Create sequenced assembly that the pack changed, which uses lava and obsidian dust. You can also cast it with a plate cast and molten obsidian.[9]

Obsidian PlateChanged by the pack

Sequenced Assembly (create)

Recipe id: create:sequenced_assembly/sturdy_sheet

Quest "Reinforcing Machine Frames" quest is a bigger step. It wants a Steel Plate, an Electrum Wire, an Immersive Engineering steel component and a Mekanism basic control circuit.[3]

Steel

Steel appears in several quests. The Mekanism chapter has quest "Making Steel" quest for enriched iron plus a Steel Ingot. Quest "Arc Furnace" quest in the technology chapter asks for a batch of Immersive Engineering blocks that includes a Block of Steel. A bounty board quest, "Basic Plating Trade" quest, asks for another steel plate.[2][4][5]

The pack changed several steel recipes. Immersive Engineering's blast furnace turns an iron ingot and slag into a steel ingot. Oritech's foundry and its Create mixing compat use coal dust and an iron ingot instead. You can also smelt or blast Steel Dust, or cast steel with molten steel.[9]

Steel IngotChanged by the pack

Blast Furnace (immersiveengineering)

  • any iron ingot
  • any slag

Recipe id: immersiveengineering:blastfurnace/steel

For steel plates, the pack adds the hammer, a Create press, an Immersive Engineering metal press and Mekanism's compressor with hydrogen. It also changed the plate cast recipe that uses molten steel.[9]

Electrum wire

Electrum wire has two routes in the pack. You can electrify gold wire with a charging recipe that the pack changed. Or you can turn electrum plates into wire with Create rolling, Create cutting, an Immersive Engineering metal press or the stonecutter, all added by the pack.[9]

Electrum WireChanged by the pack

Charging (createaddition)

  • any gold wire

Recipe id: createaddition:charging/electrify_gold_wire

Mid to late game

Tip: Most FTB Materials items have several recipes in this pack, across Create, Immersive Engineering, Mekanism, Oritech and Ender IO. Use whichever machine line you already have running.[9]

How does FTB Materials work with other mods?

6 parts

FTB Materials is the pack's shared supply of metals, plates, gems and dusts, and a lot of other mods lean on it. Most of the links below are recipes the pack added or rewrote so that other mods' machines use FTB Materials items.[9]

Create and its addons

Create's Precision Mechanism sequenced assembly is changed by the pack and uses Gold Plate. Create Connected's Control Chip assembly is also changed and takes a gold plate, then returns Iron Plate and Gold Plate among its possible outputs.[9]

Sequenced Assembly (create)

Recipe id: create:sequenced_assembly/precision_mechanism

Sequenced Assembly (create)

Recipe id: create_connected:sequenced_assembly/control_chip

Create's Sturdy Sheet assembly produces an Obsidian Plate in this pack.[9]

The pack also changed several Create ore-processing recipes to give FTB Materials nuggets. Crushing Asurine or Veridium returns a Zinc Nugget or Copper Nugget alongside the crushed raw metal. Washing crushed raw copper, zinc or uranium gives Copper Nugget, Zinc Nugget or Uranium Nugget respectively.[9]

The pack adds Create crusher recipes for the FTB Materials gem and dust ores: dimensional shard, fluorite, ruby, salt, sapphire and sulfur. Each also drops a Nugget of Experience.[9]

Create Additions' Electrum Ingot can be turned into Electrum Nugget or Block of Electrum, so both mods' electrum works together.[9]

Block of ElectrumChanged by the pack

Mekanism

The pack added a Mekanism compressing recipe for many plates. It uses Liquid Hydrogen and an ingot to make brass, bronze, constantan, electrum, invar, lead, nickel, silver, steel or zinc plates.[9]

Steel PlateAdded by the pack

Compressing (mekanism)

Recipe id: ftb:mekanism/compressing/plates/steel

The pack also built an ore-processing chain around FTB Materials items for aluminum, copper, gold, iron and lead. Liquid Oxygen purifies ores, raw materials, shards or raw storage blocks into clumps, such as Iron Clump. Clean slurry is crystallized into crystals, and Liquid Hydrogen Chloride injects ores or crystals into shards. Aluminum, copper, gold and iron have the full set of clump, crystal and shard recipes.[9]

Iron ShardAdded by the pack

Injecting (mekanism)

Immersive Engineering

The pack adds shapeless crafting recipes that make plates from an ingot and the Engineer's Hammer. This covers aluminum, brass, bronze, constantan, copper, electrum, gold, invar, iron, lead, nickel, silver, steel and zinc.[9]

Copper PlateAdded by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ftb:crafting/plates/copper

Applied Energistics 2 and ExtendedAE

ExtendedAE's Quartz Blend and Block of Silicon both lead to Silicon Gem through four recipes that the pack changed (smelting, blasting, Mekanism enriching and decompressing). The pack also added a Custom Machinery recipe that takes the gem alongside Printed Silicon.[9]

Quests that mix mods

Several quest tasks ask for FTB Materials items alongside items from other mods:[2][3][4][6][7][8]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use FTB Materials?

4 parts

FTB Materials shows up in quests across several chapters of the pack. Mostly it supplies the metal parts: ingots, plates and dusts that you hand in alongside items from other mods. The quest entries in the pack files have no titles, so the quests below are identified by their ids and by what they ask for.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

Technology chapter

This chapter has three quests that use the mod. Quest a quest in "General Tech" asks for a Mechanical Press and a Gold Plate. Quest "Mechanical Crafter" quest asks for a Brass Ingot and a Mechanical Crafter. Both of these unlock after the same earlier quest, so they are parallel branches and you can do them in either order.[2]

Quest "Arc Furnace" quest is the big one. It has an observation task plus a long list of Immersive Engineering blocks, a Block of Steel and a Cauldron. It sits behind a different earlier quest than the other two.[2]

World Engine chapters

The World Engine tier 1 chapter has three quests that use the mod. Quest "Shaping Obsidian" quest wants a Lava Bucket and an Obsidian Plate. Quest "Basic Casings" quest wants a Brass Ingot and a Brass Casing. These two unlock after the same pair of earlier quests.[3]

The third quest, "Reinforcing Machine Frames" quest, unlocks after a different pair of quests. It asks for a Steel Plate, an Electrum Wire, an Steel Mechanical Component and a Basic Control Circuit.[3]

Much later, in the World Engine tier 5 chapter, quest "Particle Acceleration" quest asks for an Particle Accelerator, Plutonium Dust and an Small Plutonium Pellet. It unlocks after two earlier quests.[8]

Mekanism chapter

Two quests here use the mod. Quest "Making Steel" quest asks for Enriched Iron and a Steel Ingot. Quest "Lithium Dust" quest asks only for Lithium Dust. Each one unlocks after its own separate earlier quest.[4]

Other chapters

Unverified The sources don't say how these chapters are ordered against each other, so the exact overall progression is unconfirmed. Only the order within a chapter, where quests unlock after earlier ones, is shown above.
