What is Occultism?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits, which the mod calls demons, from "The Other Place". Those spirits can automate tasks, store huge amounts of items, mine in void dimensions, and help you make enchanted tools and jewelry. You also get support from familiars. The mod is inspired by Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books. This pack includes Occultism 1.224.4.[1][2]

Who it is for

It suits you if you like learning a magic system step by step and don't mind setting up rituals. The mod guides you itself. You get seeds by breaking grass, the way you would for vanilla wheat seeds, then craft them with a book to make the Dictionary of Spirits. After that you follow the in-game guide.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack's magic quest chain follows the same path as the mod's own guide. It starts with Demon's Dream Seeds and Demon's Dream in a quest in "?". Next come Otherstone and Unstable Otherworld Sapling in a quest in "?". Then you set up ritual gear such as Sacrificial Bowl, Golden Ritual Bowl and Spirit Attuned Crystal in a quest in "?".[3]

The chain continues with Otherworld Ashes and impure chalks in a quest in "?". It then moves on to Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) in a quest in "?", and to Crushed End Stone and Impure Purple Chalk in a quest in "?".[3]

After that, Occultism items appear in several other parts of the questbook:[4][5][6][7]

Tip: Start with the Dictionary of Spirits and follow its pages in order. The pack's quests follow the same progression, so you can use them as a checklist.[1][3]

How do you get started with Occultism?

6 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoned spirits. In this pack the General Magic quest chapter gives you a clear order to follow. The steps below go through it one quest at a time, with the real in-pack recipes.[1][8]

Get Demon's Dream Seeds and grow the fruit

The first quest, a quest in "?", asks for Demon's Dream Seeds and Demon's Dream. The mod's project page says you get the seeds by breaking grass, and that crafting the seeds with a book gives you the Dictionary of Spirits, the mod's in-game guide. The pack also adds a Crook recipe that can give you the seeds from sand.[1][8][9]

Crook (ftbstuff)

Recipe id: ftb:ftbstuff/crook/sand

Added by the pack: one of the possible outputs is Demon's Dream Seeds.

To turn seeds into fruit, the pack adds Immersive Engineering Cloche recipes. The simplest one uses plain dirt.[9]

Make Otherstone and an Unstable Otherworld Sapling

a quest in "?" wants Otherstone and Unstable Otherworld Sapling. Both come from spirit fire recipes: andesite becomes Otherstone, and an oak sapling becomes the Unstable Otherworld Sapling. The pack also has other routes to Otherstone, including crystallizing Otherstone dust, a spirit trade from stone, and a pack-added Roost recipe.[8][9]

Craft your bowls and the attuned crystal

a quest in "?" covers the ritual gear. The Sacrificial Bowl is made from Otherstone. The Golden Ritual Bowl is a central bowl, and its tooltip says to use exactly one in the pentacle. The quest also asks for a Spirit Attuned Crystal.[8][9][10]

A good first goal after that is the Foliot Lumberjack ritual. It produces the Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack, which has its own quest in the resource generation chapter: a quest in "?".[9][11]

How does Occultism work?

5 parts

Occultism builds its systems around summoned spirits rather than conventional machines. The mod's own description says rituals let you automate tasks, store large amounts of items and have demons mine in void dimensions. This section covers the parts of that which the pack's files confirm.[1]

Ritual setup and sacrificial bowls

The golden, dark golden, iesnium and dark iesnium sacrificial bowls are all central bowls. Their tooltips tell you to use exactly one of them in the pentacle.[10]

The bowl information screen cycles through pentagram pages. This pack uses the mod defaults for it: 3 pentagrams shown at a time and 40 ticks between pages. You can change these with misc.pentagramInBowlInfoCount and misc.pentagramInBowlInfoTicks.[12]

Otherglass is a block you can only see by wearing Otherworld Goggles once it is placed.[10]

Automating with spirit books

Spirit labour starts with a Book of Binding. You begin with Book of Binding: Empty, which you can later turn into a specific spirit type.[9]

The pack has Books of Binding for Foliot, Djinni, Afrit and Marid. Each also has a direct crafting recipe that skips the empty book. A bound Foliot or Djinni book can be made from a matching Book of Calling.[9]

The pack's Books of Calling cover specific jobs: Book of Calling: Foliot Janitor, Book of Calling: Foliot Farmer, Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack, Book of Calling: Foliot Transporter and Book of Calling: Djinni Machine Operator. Each is made from a bound Book of Binding plus one extra item.[9]

Dimensional mineshaft handling

The dimensional mineshaft discards any items it cannot store. Empty it regularly, either by hand, with hoppers or with a transporter spirit. Which slots you reach depends on the side you use:[10]

  • Top side: the lamp slot.[10]
  • Bottom side: the ore slots.[10]
  • Any other side: all slots.[10]
Watch out: Items the mineshaft cannot store are thrown away, not held back. Set up automatic emptying before you leave it running.[10]

Storage

A stable wormhole shows in its tooltip whether it is linked to a storage actuator, and if so, where. In this pack, misc.enableEMISync is set to true, which enables EMI sync for the storage actuator. JEI search sync for the actuator, misc.syncJeiSearch, is set to false.[10][12]

Wild Spirit forging

Forging reinforced deepslate works differently from other rituals. It is a service from Wild Spirits, and no spirit is bound to the final item. You sacrifice the items and the spirit forges the block for you. You can collect the result with an infused or iesnium pickaxe.[10]

How do you progress through Occultism?

4 parts

Occultism progression in this pack is a chain of quests that gets you from a few farmed seeds to spirit-powered automation and storage. The quests have no titles in the data I was given, so I refer to them by ID and describe what each one asks for.[8]

Early chain: the general magic quests

The first six quests of the general magic chapter run in a straight line, each unlocking the next. Here is what each one wants and how to get it in this pack.[8]

  1. a quest in "?" asks for Demon's Dream Seeds and the grown Demon's Dream. The pack added several Immersive Engineering cloche recipes that turn the seeds into fruit on plain dirt, Rich Soil, or any of four goo soil tiers. The pack also added a crook recipe that can drop the seeds from sand.[8][9]
  2. a quest in "?" wants Otherstone and an Unstable Otherworld Sapling, plus an observation task. Spirit fire turns andesite into otherstone and an oak sapling into the unstable sapling. A spirit trade turns any stone into otherstone, and smelting othercobblestone also works. The pack adds one more route, a roost recipe using an Otherstone Chicken.[8][9]
  3. a quest in "?" covers your ritual hardware: the Sacrificial Bowl, the Golden Ritual Bowl and the Spirit Attuned Crystal. It also lists a skeleton skull and a wither skeleton skull. The recipes for the plain bowl, the golden bowl and the crystal are shown below.[8][9]
  4. a quest in "?" wants Otherworld Ashes, Impure White Chalk and Impure Yellow Chalk. Spirit fire turns otherworld logs into the ashes.[8][9]
  5. a quest in "?" asks for Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) plus an observation task. Besides the ritual route, a Create filling recipe with Spirit Solution binds the Foliot book. You can also get the bound book by converting any Foliot Book of Calling.[8][9]
  6. a quest in "?" closes the chain with Crushed End Stone and Impure Purple Chalk. Purple chalk is crafted from white chalk.[8][9]

Tip: The spirit attuned crystal is not only an Occultism milestone. A quest in the gearing up chapter also asks for it, alongside the Hellshelf and Seashelf, so make one early.[13]

Spirit ranks

The recipes gate things by spirit rank. An empty binding book is turned into a Foliot, Djinni, Afrit or Marid book, and each rank shows up in later rituals as its bound version. Foliot is the entry rank, which matches the quest chain above.[9]

Resource generation

In the resource generation chapter, a quest in "?" asks for Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack. You can summon it with a ritual, or craft it from a bound Foliot book and a metal axe.[9][11]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: occultism:crafting/book_of_calling_foliot_lumberjack

a quest in "?" asks for the Dimensional Mineshaft. It is a ritual craft that needs a bound Djinni book, so it sits a rank above the lumberjack.[9][11]

Ritual (occultism)

Recipe id: occultism:ritual/craft_dimensional_mineshaft

Storage tiers

a quest in "?" in the logistics and storage chapter asks for four things: the Dimensional Storage Actuator, any tier of storage stabilizer, the Stable Wormhole and the Storage Accessor.[14]

The stabilizer is where the tiers show. Each tier is a ritual that upgrades the one before it, starting from the Dimensional Storage Stabilizer Base. Tier 1 needs a bound Foliot book, tier 2 a bound Djinni book, tier 3 a bound Afrit book and tier 4 a bound Marid book. The quest accepts any of the four, so you can finish it at tier 1.[9][14]

How does Occultism work with other mods?

5 parts

Occultism doesn't live on its own in this pack. Recipes from Ars Nouveau, Create, Immersive Engineering, Draconic Evolution and a few others reach into it, and the pack adds some of those links itself. Here are the ones that show up in the in-pack recipes and quests.[9]

Ars Nouveau (Ars Ocultas)

The Ars Ocultas recipes tie the two magic systems together. You craft a Spirit Attuned Gem at an Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus, using Ars essences and a Source Gem alongside Occultism's Demon's Dream Essence. This is the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.[9]

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_ocultas:spirit_attuned_gem

The pack changed the recipe for the Sacrificial Altar, the Sacrificial Altar, which is also made at the enchanting apparatus. The same goes for the two imbuement recipes that convert between silver and gold, one producing Silver Ingot and the other producing a gold ingot. Both transmutations use a Spirit Attuned Gem.[9]

Create and Occult Engineering

The occultengineering recipes bring Create machines into the spirit world. The key material is Spirit Solution. You can mix it from water and either Demon's Dream or Otherworld Essence, or compact it straight from Demon's Dream Seeds.[9]

Mixing (create)

Recipe id: occultengineering:mixing/spirit_solution_from_fruit

Spirit Solution then feeds several other recipes. Create's filling step turns each Book of Binding (Afrit, Djinni, Foliot and Marid) into its bound version. Create compacting turns Impure White Chalk into Impure Brass, Copper and Zinc chalk. You can also mix a Book of Binding: Púca.[9]

A few crafts mix both mods directly. Otherworldly Engineer's Goggles merge Create's Engineer's Goggles with Otherworld Goggles. Encyclopedia of Souls combines a Create cogwheel with the dictionary of spirits. Two Occultism rituals produce the Mechanical Chamber and the Otherworld Detector.[9]

The pack changed two of these recipes: the Mechanical Pulverizer crafting recipe and the Create item-application recipe for the Fan Enspirit Catalyst, which starts from Create Connected's empty fan catalyst.[9]

The pack also adds Create cutting recipes for Occultism wood. Cutting an Otherworld Log or Otherworld Wood gives the stripped version plus Farmer's Delight Tree Bark.[9]

Getting Demon's Dream

The pack adds a few extra ways to get Demon's Dream Seeds and fruit. Using a crook on sand can drop the seeds, along with Farmer's Delight wild crops and other items. An Immersive Engineering cloche can also grow Demon's Dream from the seeds on Rich Soil or on Just Dire Things soils (Primogel, Blazebloom, VoidShimmer and Shadowpulse). The first quest in the general_magic chapter, a quest in "?", asks for both the seeds and the fruit.[8][9]

Demon's DreamAdded by the pack

Cloche (immersiveengineering)

Recipe id: ftb:cloche/datura_from_rich_soil

Chickens and the World Engine

Occultism items also show up in the pack's chicken progression. A Chicken Roost recipe added by the pack turns the chicken_roost:c_otherstone into Otherstone. Awakened Feather is an input in the World Engine chicken recipes for draconium, neutronium, skystone and timey_wimey. It is also an input in the Draconic Evolution fusion recipe for the Awakened Draconium Chicken. The skystone recipe also uses Otherrock.[9]

Other World Engine machine recipes added by the pack consume Occultism items too. Their ids are blade_of_vitality and vigor_bow (Afrit Essence and Echo Dust), interdiction_torch (Spirit Torch), enchanted_book_reaper_9 (Fragile Soul Gem), music_disc_ignis (Iesnium Ingot) and structure_compass (Amethyst Dust). The recipe dump doesn't list their outputs.[9]

Quests that cross over

Most Occultism quests only ask for Occultism items, but a couple mix in other mods. a quest in "?" in gearing_up asks for a Spirit Attuned Crystal alongside Apothic Enchanting's Hellshelf and Seashelf. a quest in "?" in resource_generation asks for an Immersive Engineering item plus any one of netherrack, end stone or Otherrock.[11][13]

Unverified The recipe dump doesn't show outputs for the FTB Unearthed netherrack recipes that use Iesnium Dust, so what they produce is unverified.

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Occultism?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Occultism shows up in five quest chapters in this pack. The main questline is in the general_magic chapter, and the other four chapters each have a quest that asks for Occultism items. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so I describe them by what they ask for.[3][4][5][6][7]

general_magic: the main Occultism chain

This chapter is a straight line of six quests, and each one unlocks after the one before it. Here's the order.[3]

  1. Quest a quest in "?" is the first in the chain. It asks for Demon's Dream Seeds and Demon's Dream.[3]
  2. Quest a quest in "?" has an observation task. It also asks for Otherstone and Unstable Otherworld Sapling.[3]
  3. Quest a quest in "?" asks for Golden Ritual Bowl, Sacrificial Bowl and Spirit Attuned Crystal. It also asks for a skeleton skull and a wither skeleton skull, plus one more item task that the pack file doesn't name.[3]
  4. Quest a quest in "?" asks for Otherworld Ashes, Impure White Chalk and Impure Yellow Chalk.[3]
  5. Quest a quest in "?" asks for Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) and has an observation task.[3]
  6. Quest a quest in "?" finishes the chain. It asks for Crushed End Stone and Impure Purple Chalk.[3]

Other chapters that use Occultism

Tip: The Spirit Attuned Crystal is asked for in both the general_magic chain and the gearing_up quest, so one crystal task shows up in two places.[3][5]

Which Occultism config options matter?

5 parts

Occultism splits its settings across three files: a client file, a server file and a startup file. Wherever the pack's files record a mod default, this pack's value is identical to it, so the numeric values below are the mod's normal values and not pack changes. For on/off options the files don't list a default, so I can't say whether the pack flipped any of them.[12][15][16]

Storage actuator and stabilizers

The storage actuator provides storage.controllerMaxItemTypes = 128 slots and a total capacity of storage.controllerMaxTotalItemCount = 256,000 items. Stabilizers add on top of that, and every value is the mod default.[15]

Rituals

rituals.ritualDurationMultiplier is 1, so rituals run at normal speed. The mod's note says values below 1.0 speed rituals up, and you must write a leading zero, like 0.05, or the value resets to 1.0. The day, night, clear weather, rain and thunder rituals are all enabled.[15]

Casting times for those time and weather rituals are 100 ticks for clear weather (spirit_job.clearWeatherTimeToCast), day (spirit_job.dayTimeToCast) and night (spirit_job.nightTimeToCast). Rain (spirit_job.rainTimeToCast) takes 200 and thunder (spirit_job.thunderTimeToCast) takes 300.[15]

Crusher and smelter spirits

Higher-tier spirits work faster and give more. Tier 1 (Foliot) crushers have a time multiplier of 2 (spirit_job.tier1CrusherTimeMultiplier), so they are slower than the recipe. Tier 4 (Marid) crushers have an output multiplier of 3 (spirit_job.tier4CrusherOutputMultiplier) and a time multiplier of 0.2 (spirit_job.tier4CrusherTimeMultiplier). Tier 4 smelter spirits use a cooking time multiplier of 0.01 (spirit_job.tier4SmelterTimeMultiplier). All of these are mod defaults.[15]

Dimensional Mineshaft miners

Miners can use efficiency (items.minerEfficiency) and fortune (items.minerFortune) enchantments, and both are enabled. The startup file sets durability and mining time per miner spirit, and each miner obtains 1 block per operation. Startup options only change when the game launches.[15][16]

Divination rod, chalk and client options

items.anyOreDivinationRod is false, so the Divining Rod is not allowed to attune to any ore. items.unbreakableChalks is also false, so chalks get damaged on use. On the client, misc.divinationRodScanRange is 129 blocks, and the mod warns that a higher range might cause lag.[12][15]

If you have color blindness, every chalk glyph color can be changed on the client. For red, the mod suggests 33289 (a green) in visual.redChalkGlyphColor. If Demon's Dream's visual effects bother you, turn on visual.disableDemonsDreamShaders, which is currently false.[12]

Spirit names are fully random in this pack: rituals.possibleSpiritNames is an empty list and rituals.usePossibleSpiritNamesChance is 0.[16]

What changed in Occultism between versions?

1 part

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.3.0 ships Occultism 1.197.0. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier, so you've had access to it from the start.[17]

Recent mod releases

  • 1.197.0 (the version in this pack): adds the Farmer Spirit, along with a batch of fixes bundled into the same release.[17][18]
  • 1.196.0: adds the remaining new item and block textures.[19]
  • 1.194.0: updates the Chinese Simplified translations.[20]

These are the only mod changelogs I have for this guide, so releases outside this list aren't covered here.[18][19][20]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Occultism were available, so any changes the FTB StoneBlock 4 releases made to this mod's recipes or values are unverified.
