What is The Twilight Forest?

2 parts

The Twilight Forest is in the pack at version 4.8.3345. The sources I have don't include a mod description or guidebook, so this overview covers what the pack's quest book shows about it. In this pack, the mod is mostly about its boss trophies.[1]

Where it fits in the quest book

The main Twilight Forest progression sits in the World Engine Tier 4 chapter. It's a chain of quests, and each one has a structure task plus a trophy to hand in. You start with "The Lair of the Lich" quest, which asks for the Twilight Lich Trophy. That quest only unlocks after the quests leading into it are done.[2]

After that, the order is fixed. "The Yeti's Cave" quest wants the Alpha Yeti Trophy. It leads on to "The Snow Queen's Palace" quest for the Snow Queen Trophy and "The Hydra's Lair" quest for the Hydra Trophy. You need both of those before "The Final Twilight Vault" quest, which asks for the Knight Phantom Trophy.[2]

"Auto-Build The Twilight Upgrade" quest in the same chapter is a collection quest. It asks for all of those trophies together, so keep them rather than trading them away.[2]

Other places the trophies show up

Tip: Several chapters ask for the same trophies, so you can plan ahead. Once you've beaten each Twilight Forest boss, hold on to its trophy until you've checked the Bounty Board and Backrooms quests.[2][3][4]

Unverified The sources don't show The Twilight Forest on the ATM Star quest path, and they don't include any recipes or config values for the mod.

How do you get started with The Twilight Forest?

3 parts

The mod's own first goal is simple: enter the mysterious, magical woodlands of the Twilight Forest. After that, the pack's quest book steers you toward the boss trophies.[2][5]

Where the pack points you

The Tier 4 quests in the World Engine chapter each ask you to find a structure and bring back a boss trophy. Here is the order they unlock in. The first one also depends on earlier quests that these sources don't describe.[2]

  1. Find the structure and bring back the Twilight Lich Trophy for "The Lair of the Lich" quest.[2]
  2. Next comes the Alpha Yeti Trophy for "The Yeti's Cave" quest.[2]
  3. Once the yeti quest is done, the next quests open. One wants the Snow Queen Trophy ("The Snow Queen's Palace" quest) and the other wants the Hydra Trophy ("The Hydra's Lair" quest).[2]
  4. With both of those done, collect the Knight Phantom Trophy for "The Final Twilight Vault" quest.[2]
  5. Finally, "Auto-Build The Twilight Upgrade" quest asks you to turn in every one of those trophies.[2]

Keep your trophies. The five-trophy set is asked for again in the bounty board chapter ("Twilight Trophy Trade" quest), and the snow queen and hydra trophies come up once more in the backrooms chapter (a quest in "Backstage").[3][4]

The bounty board chapter also has a quest that asks for the Questing Ram Trophy (a quest in "Bounty Board").[3]

What the mod's progression tells you

The mod's advancements hint at a rough boss order. Slaying the Naga in its forest courtyard gets you something to overcome the barrier magic around the Lich's tower. Slaying the Lich at the top of that tower gets you a scepter. Settling the phantoms in the knight's tomb makes the carminite tower's devices obey you.[5]

The Alpha Yeti trophy also works as a crafting ingredient. Here is the in-pack recipe for its banner pattern, in case you want it on a banner.[6]

Pack changes to watch for

The pack has changed the recipes for several small Twilight items, such as the Firefly, Cicada and Moonworm. Don't expect the mod's default recipes for them. Here is the pack's version of the firefly.[6]

How does The Twilight Forest work?

7 parts

The Twilight Forest isn't a power-and-pipes mod. It has no energy or fluid systems that the sources describe. Its automation-style features are the magic tree cores, a couple of carminite redstone devices, and some config switches that shape how the dimension behaves. Here is what I can confirm for this pack.[5][6][7]

Magic tree cores

The magic trees each have a core block with a working radius. This pack leaves all four at the mod default of 16 blocks: [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.miningCoreRange]] for the Minewood Core, [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.sortingCoreRange]] for the Sortingwood Core, [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.timeCoreRange]] for the Timewood Core and [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.transformationCoreRange]] for the Transformation Core.[7]

Each range accepts values from 0 to 128. Setting one to 0 stops that core from functioning at all, so a server owner can switch a tree off completely. Plan your builds around the 16-block radius, because the core only affects what is inside it.[7]

Carminite devices

The Carminite Builder and the Carminite Reactor are the redstone-style devices of the mod. The recipes in this pack are unchanged mod recipes, and both use Encased Towerwood Planks and carminite.[6]

There is a progression gate here. The advancement for settling the restless phantoms in the knight's tomb says the carminite tower's devices will obey you afterwards. The sources don't say how that gate works internally, so beat the Knight Phantoms before you expect these devices to cooperate.[5]

Portals and the dimension

This pack leaves [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Dimension Settings.newPlayersSpawnInTF]] off, so new players start in the normal world and have to build a portal. [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Dimension Settings.portalForNewPlayer]] is also off. It only matters if the first option is on, and then it would spawn a return portal for new players.[7]

The mod also has options for the maximum portal size, for pre-checking portal safety, and for disabling portal creation entirely. The mod describes the last one as a tool for server operators who want to restrict access to the dimension. The pack's values for these aren't visible in the sources I have.[5]

Uncrafting table

The mod includes an uncrafting table, and an advancement even asks you to uncraft one. It can reverse normal crafting recipes, and it also handles special uncrafting-only recipes that the mod depends on. The mod has options to turn off just the uncrafting function, to turn off the table entirely, and to stop it from switching between ingredients when a recipe uses a tag.[5]

Loot, caskets and boss drops

  • bossesSpawnDropChests is on in this pack. Bosses put their drops in a chest where they spawned instead of dropping the loot directly. The Knight Phantoms are the exception, because their drops work differently.[7]
  • casketUUIDLocking is off. Keepsake Caskets that appear when a player dies are not locked to their owner, so other players can open them. If it were on, server operators could still open locked caskets.[7]
  • disableSkullCandleCreation is off, so you can make Skull Candles by right-clicking a vanilla skull with a candle.[7]

Cloud weather and performance

Cloud blocks run weather logic below them. The common setting cloudBlockPrecipitationDistance is 32 blocks in this pack, the mod default. Lower it if your tick rate suffers, and set it to 0 to turn all cloud precipitation logic off.[7]

The client-side cloudBlockPrecipitationDistance is -1, which syncs it with the common value. Set it lower for better client performance, or to 0 to turn the rendering off.[8]

Client-side mechanics worth knowing

  • fortificationShieldIndicator is on. It shows how many fortification shields are currently active on you, above your armor bar.[8]
  • travellersWingsGradualGlide is on. With it on, normal falling is the default and holding sneak activates slow falling. With it off, the behavior is reversed.[8]
  • screenShakingEffect is on, so the screen shakes while a Magic Bean is growing.[8]
  • questRamWoolIndicator is on. While you hold wool and look at the Questing Ram, a check mark or X appears above your crosshair to show whether that color has already been fed to it.[8]
  • disableLockedBiomeToasts is off, so you get a toast when you enter a locked biome. The mod advises against turning these off unless you already know the progression.[8]

How do you progress through The Twilight Forest?

4 parts

In this pack, Twilight Forest progression is tracked by the boss trophies. The pack's tier 4 world engine chapter has a quest line that walks you through five bosses, and each of those quests pairs a structure task with handing in that boss's trophy.[2][3]

The boss quest chain

  1. Start with "The Lair of the Lich" quest: complete its structure task and hand in the Twilight Lich Trophy. It has prerequisite quests that you need to finish first.[2]
  2. Next is "The Yeti's Cave" quest, which asks for the Alpha Yeti Trophy and needs the Lich quest done first.[2]
  3. After the Alpha Yeti, the chain splits. "The Snow Queen's Palace" quest wants the Snow Queen Trophy, and "The Hydra's Lair" quest wants the Hydra Trophy. Both unlock from the Alpha Yeti quest, so you can take them in either order.[2]
  4. "The Final Twilight Vault" quest asks for the Knight Phantom Trophy. It only unlocks once both the Snow Queen and Hydra quests are done.[2]
  5. Finally, "Auto-Build The Twilight Upgrade" quest is a hand-in for all five trophies together: Lich, Alpha Yeti, Snow Queen, Hydra and Knight Phantom.[2][3]
Tip: Keep your trophies after the first hand-in. Other quests ask for them again, so you will want a full set.[2][3]

Where the trophies come up again

The bounty board chapter has "Twilight Trophy Trade" quest, which asks for all five trophies and comes after the Knight Phantom quest. The same chapter has a quest in "Bounty Board", which asks for the Questing Ram Trophy.[3]

A quest in the backrooms chapter, a quest in "Backstage", asks for the Snow Queen Trophy and the Hydra Trophy. No prerequisites are listed for it.[4]

Gear and materials along the way

The pack's recipe list includes compact storage blocks for the Twilight materials: Block of Ironwood, Block of Steeleaf, Block of Knightmetal, Block of Fiery Metal, Block of Arctic Fur and Block of Carminite. Here is the Ironwood one:[6]

How does The Twilight Forest work with other mods?

4 parts

The Twilight Forest doesn't live in its own bubble in this pack. Its items show up in recipes from several other mods, and some of those recipes were added or changed by the pack. Here's where the connections are.[6]

Create Shimmer

Crushing Deadrock gives you Thorn Flour and Cracked Deadrock. Cracked and weathered deadrock can be crushed too, and each of those recipes also gives Thorn Flour.[6]

Thorn Flour is then used to make Castle Brick by compacting, and to craft the Castle Door. Combine that door with a dye to get the blue, magenta, violet or yellow Twilight Forest castle doors.[6]

Quests

The quest book sends you after Twilight Forest boss trophies. In the world engine tier 4 chapter, you visit structures and collect the Twilight Lich Trophy, Alpha Yeti Trophy, Snow Queen Trophy, Hydra Trophy and Knight Phantom Trophy. One quest then asks you to hand in all five.[2]

The bounty board has a quest for the same five trophies and another for the Questing Ram Trophy. A quest in the backrooms chapter asks for the Snow Queen and Hydra trophies. The quests are "Auto-Build The Twilight Upgrade" quest, "Twilight Trophy Trade" quest, a quest in "Bounty Board" and a quest in "Backstage".[2][3][4]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use The Twilight Forest?

3 parts

The Twilight Forest shows up in three quest chapters in the pack. Every one of these quests is untitled in the quest files, so here they are by their quest references. The big one is the World Engine Tier 4 chapter, and the other two chapters reuse its boss trophies.[2][3][4]

World Engine Tier 4

This chapter walks you through the Twilight Forest boss trophies. Each of the first five quests has a structure task plus a trophy item task. The chain runs in this order:[2]

  1. "The Lair of the Lich" quest asks for a structure and the Twilight Lich Trophy. It unlocks after two quests from outside this mod's list.[2]
  2. "The Yeti's Cave" quest asks for a structure and the Alpha Yeti Trophy. It comes after the Lich quest.[2]
  3. "The Snow Queen's Palace" quest asks for a structure and the Snow Queen Trophy. It unlocks after the Alpha Yeti quest.[2]
  4. "The Hydra's Lair" quest asks for a structure and the Hydra Trophy. It also unlocks after the Alpha Yeti quest, so you can do it before or after the Snow Queen one.[2]
  5. "The Final Twilight Vault" quest asks for a structure and the Knight Phantom Trophy. You need both the Hydra and Snow Queen quests done first.[2]
  6. "Auto-Build The Twilight Upgrade" quest is a hand-in quest with no structure task. It wants the Lich, Alpha Yeti, Snow Queen, Hydra and Knight Phantom trophies together. It unlocks after a quest outside this mod's list.[2]

The sources don't say which structure each structure task points to, so I won't guess. Check the quest in-game to see.[2]

Bounty Board

Two Twilight Forest quests live here. "Twilight Trophy Trade" quest asks you to hand in all five boss trophies again: Lich, Alpha Yeti, Hydra, Snow Queen and Knight Phantom. It needs "The Final Twilight Vault" quest from the World Engine chapter plus one other quest outside this mod's list.[3]

a quest in "Bounty Board" asks for a single Questing Ram Trophy. It unlocks after two other quests that aren't covered here.[3]

Tip: The Bounty Board trophy quest asks for the same five trophies as the final World Engine hand-in. Keep your trophies as you go so you aren't farming bosses twice.[2][3]

The Backrooms

a quest in "Backstage" in the thebackrooms chapter asks for the Snow Queen Trophy and the Hydra Trophy. No prerequisite quests are listed for it in the sources.[4]

Which The Twilight Forest config options matter?

5 parts

The Twilight Forest has a client config and a common config in this pack. Below are the options you're most likely to run into, with the exact values the pack ships. Every value in the files that is annotated with a mod default matches that default, so those are not pack changes.[7][8]

Portals and getting in

Watch out: The pack sets [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.disablePortalCreation]] to true. The option's own description says it disables Twilight Forest portal creation entirely, so the usual way of making a portal is switched off here.[7]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.maxPortalSize]] is 64, the same as the mod default. It is the maximum number of water spaces checked when forming a portal.[7]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.portalCreationPermission]] is 0, the same as the mod default, so no special permission level is required.[7]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.originDimension]] is minecraft:overworld. That is the dimension you can always travel to the Twilight Forest from and return to.[7]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.allowPortalsInOtherDimensions]] is false, so portals can't be made outside the origin dimension.[7]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Dimension Settings.newPlayersSpawnInTF]] is false, so new players don't start in the Twilight Forest.[7]

Uncrafting table

[[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.disableUncrafting]] is true in this pack. That turns off the normal uncrafting function of the uncrafting table. The option's description notes that special uncrafting recipes are not disabled, because the mod relies on them for other things. The table itself is still enabled, since [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.disableUncraftingTable]] is false.[7]

  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.disableUncraftingRecipes]] contains twilightforest:giant_log_to_oak_planks.[7]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.uncraftingXpCostMultiplier]] and [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.repairingXpCostMultiplier]] are both 1, the same as the mod default.[7]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.enableShapelessCrafting]] is false, so shapeless recipes are not uncrafted.[7]

Bosses and combat

  • multiplayerFightAdjuster is MORE_HEALTH. Per its description, each boss gets 20 hearts more health for each player nearby when the fight starts.[7]
  • bossesSpawnDropChests is true, so bosses put their drops in a chest where they spawned. Knight Phantoms are not affected.[7]
  • casketUUIDLocking is false, so other players can open the Keepsake Caskets that appear when you die.[7]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Shield Parrying.shieldParryTicksArrow]] is 40 ticks, the same as the mod default. [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Shield Parrying.parryNonTwilightAttacks]] is false, so non-Twilight projectiles can't be parried.[7]

Magic tree cores

The Minewood, Sortingwood, Timewood and Transformation cores all have a radius of 16, the same as the mod default. See [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.miningCoreRange]], [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.sortingCoreRange]], [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.timeCoreRange]] and [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.transformationCoreRange]]. Each accepts 0 to 128, and 0 stops that core from working.[7]

Performance and client options

cloudBlockPrecipitationDistance is 32, the same as the mod default. Lower it if your tick rate suffers. On the client, cloudBlockPrecipitationDistance is -1, which syncs it with the common config. Lower it if you have rendering performance problems.[7][8]

  • silentCicadas is false. Set it to true if cicadas bother you or you have sound library problems.[8]
  • screenShakingEffect is true, so the screen shakes while a Magic Bean grows.[8]
  • travellersWingsGradualGlide is true. With it on, normal falling is the default and holding sneak activates slow falling.[8]
  • disableLockedBiomeToasts is false, so you still get the toasts when entering a locked biome. They help if you're unfamiliar with progression.[8]
  • [[config:config/twilightforest-client.toml#Item Display Modifier Settings.twentyFourHourFormat]] is true, so the clock upgrade shows 24-hour time.[8]
