What is Mekanism?

1 part

Mekanism is one of the big tech mods: machinery at low, mid and high tiers, high-tech tools, energy transmission, and ore processing that can multiply the ingots you get from each ore well beyond simple smelting, given enough infrastructure and energy. If you like building factories and automating things, this mod is for you.[1]

Mekanism is built around gradual progression. Every machine can be upgraded to a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or 9 (ultimate) items at once, so you can replace walls of furnaces with a few compact machines.[1]

Mekanism Generators is the official power addon. It adds generators such as the Heat, Bio and Solar Generators, plus the big multiblocks: the Fission Reactor, the Fusion Reactor and the Turbine. Without it, you would need another mod to power your Mekanism machines.[2]

This pack runs Mekanism and Mekanism Generators version 10.7.19.[3]

Where it fits in the pack

How do you get started with Mekanism?

5 parts

Mekanism gives you tiers of tech machines, from simple early-game ones up to high-end ones, and it can process ores much more efficiently than a furnace. You're playing it together with Mekanism Generators, the official addon that adds the power side: Heat Generators, Bio-Generators, Gas-Burning Generators, reactors and turbines. Without it, your Mekanism machines would need power from another mod.[1][2]

In this pack, everything in the Mekanism quest chapter starts from a single quest: making a Metallurgic Infuser in "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest. The main World Engine progression also asks for one early, in "Infusing Metals" quest. That makes the Infuser your first real goal.[4][7]

Step 1: Get some power going

The early World Engine quest "Infusing Metals" quest asks for a generator alongside the Metallurgic Infuser. You can use a Heat Generator for it, or a generator from another mod like Simple Coal Generator or Coal Generator. The Heat Generator is the classic way to start making power in Mekanism, and it also has its own quest, "Heat Generator" quest, in the Power chapter.[7][8][9]

Step 2: Alloys and circuits

Once your Infuser is running, a quest in "Mekanism" asks for Infused Alloy, a Basic Control Circuit and an Advanced Control Circuit. This is why the Infuser comes first: the Basic Control Circuit is made inside it. You'll need circuits and alloys for almost every machine after this.[4][10]

Step 3: Steel and the Steel Casing

Next, "Making Steel" quest asks for Enriched Iron and a Steel Ingot. Completing it opens up the Steel Casing quest, a quest in "Mekanism". The Steel Casing is the big one, because most of the early machine quests unlock after it.[4]

The same steel quest also unlocks the Configurator in a quest in "Mekanism". The Configurator is your tool for changing the settings of Mekanism blocks. The Processing & Automation chapter has a quest for it too, "Mekanism Pipes" quest, which pairs it with your first cable, pipe, tube or transporter.[4][11][12]

Step 5: Bio Fuel and storing power

After the Crusher, go for the Bio Fuel quest, "Bio Fuel" quest. The Crusher turns a huge range of plant and food items into Bio Fuel. In the Power chapter, "Bio-Generator" quest has you pair that Bio Fuel with a Bio-Generator.[4][9][10]

Tip: The circuit, Configurator, Crusher, Energized Smelter, Configuration Card and Energy Cube recipes shown here are Mekanism's own recipes. They are not recipes added by the pack.[10]

Unverified The in-pack recipes for the Metallurgic Infuser, Steel Casing, Enrichment Chamber, Heat Generator and Bio-Generator could not be checked. Look them up in-game, because the pack may have changed them.

How does Mekanism work?

9 parts

Mekanism gives you low-, mid- and high-tier machinery, advanced ore processing, transmitters for moving things around, and a machine configuration system that ties it all together. Mekanism itself doesn't come with power generation. That's the job of Mekanism Generators, the official addon. Without it you'd need another mod to power your machines.[1][2]

Power: Joules and FE

Mekanism measures energy in Joules, and it also connects to Forge Energy (FE/RF), which is left enabled in this pack. The conversion works as FE multiplied by energy_conversion.feConversionRate equals Joules. In StoneBlock 4 that rate is 2.5, the mod default, so 1 FE is 2.5 Joules.[13]

Once you're making more power than you use, build an Energy Cube to store the extra.[11]

Machines, circuits and factories

Most machines are crafted around a Steel Casing plus a control circuit of a certain tier. The circuit tiers go basic, advanced, elite and ultimate, and each tier is crafted from the one below it. For example, the Enrichment Chamber and Crusher use a basic circuit, the Combiner uses an elite one, and the Chemical Crystallizer needs an ultimate one.[10]

Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded into a factory that processes several items at once: 3 at basic, 5 at advanced, 7 at elite and 9 at ultimate. You can also craft a Tier Installer to upgrade a factory in place instead of breaking it down.[1][11]

Ore processing

Smelting an ore straight into an ingot wastes most of what you mined. Mekanism's processing chains, using purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization, can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore, as long as you have the infrastructure and the energy to run them. The Enrichment Chamber is the first step up in material efficiency. The later stages bring in machines like the Injection Chamber, Dissolution Chamber, Washer and Chemical Crystallizer.[1][11]

Transmitters and automation

Mekanism has a transmitter for each kind of resource. Universal Cables carry energy, Mechanical Pipes carry fluids, Pressurized Tubes carry chemicals, Logistical Transporters carry items, and Thermodynamic Conductors carry heat. You can upgrade transmitters to the next tier right in the world by using the next tier of alloy on them, and you can look inside a transmitter network with a Network Reader.[1][11]

For sorting, the Logistical Sorter filters which items go where. Combined with the machine configuration system, this lets you build item networks that sort and filter automatically. The Formulaic Assemblicator is a machine that does crafting for you, and it works with Crafting Formula items.[1][11]

The Configurator changes a block's settings. Once one machine is set up the way you like, a Configuration Card copies that configuration onto another machine.[11]

Auto-eject pushes fluids and chemicals out of machines at 1,024 mB/t each. Storage items fill and empty at 1,024 mB/t too. When a tank is set to dump excess, it keeps 0.85 of its capacity. All of these are the mod defaults in this pack.[13]

Storage

For small-scale storage you have the Basic Fluid Tank for fluids, the Basic Chemical Tank for (almost) all chemicals, and the Basic Bin for items.[10][11]

Multiblocks: Dynamic Tank and Thermoelectric Boiler

A Dynamic Tank's capacity grows with its volume. Each block adds 350,000 mB of fluid capacity or 16,000,000 mB of chemical capacity, so total capacity is the volume multiplied by that per-block value. These are unchanged from the mod defaults.[13]

The Thermoelectric Boiler turns heat into steam. Its volume is split into portions: each block of the water portion holds 16,000 mB, each block of the steam portion holds 160,000 mB, and each block of the heated and cooled coolant portions holds 256,000 mB. Each heating element produces 16,000,000 heat. A value of 0.7 controls how much of the boiler's heat is immediately usable for turning water into steam. All of these are mod defaults here.[13]

Steam is capped at 10 Joules per mB, and that cap also affects the Thermoelectric Boiler. For heat sources, the Fuelwood Heater makes 400 heat per tick of a fuel's burn time. The Resistive Heater turns each Joule into 0.6 heat.[13]

Unverified The exact shape and size rules for building the Dynamic Tank, the Thermoelectric Boiler and the Industrial Turbine aren't covered by the available sources.

Generators and reactors

Mekanism Generators adds the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator (which burns Ethene), Bio-Generator, Solar and Advanced Solar Generators, Wind Generator, the Turbine, and the Fission and Fusion Reactors.[2][8]

A Fission Reactor's power scales with its fuel assemblies. Its maximum burn rate is the number of fuel assemblies times the burn rate each one adds, and each assembly also adds fuel and waste capacity. Each casing block adds heat capacity. Cooling gets harder as the assemblies' average surface area goes up.[8]

Watch out: Once a Fission Reactor's damage passes 100%, it has a chance of a catastrophic meltdown. That chance rises the further past 100% the damage goes. A meltdown causes an explosion and multiplies the radioactivity of the fuel and waste inside. If meltdowns are disabled in the config, the reactor shuts itself off instead and stays off until the damage drops back to a safe level. You can use a Geiger Counter to see how much radiation your experiments have spread into the area.[8][11]

Unverified Whether Fission Reactor meltdowns are enabled in FTB StoneBlock 4, and the reactor's exact values here, can't be confirmed because the pack's Mekanism Generators config isn't in the sources.

Antimatter and the SPS

Tip: StoneBlock 4 makes antimatter a lot cheaper. sps.energyPerInput, the energy needed to process 1 mB of input, is set to 250,000 instead of the mod default of 1,000,000. The energy to make 1 mB of antimatter is the input needed per antimatter multiplied by this value.[13]

Antimatter pellets go into the Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer, alongside Atomic Alloy, a Steel Casing and an ultimate circuit.[10]

Digital Miner, chunkloading and moving blocks

The Digital Miner automates mining using filters. It reaches up to 32 blocks out and takes 80 ticks per block without upgrades. Silk touch mode multiplies its energy use by 12. All of these are mod defaults.[1][13]

Chunkloading is allowed in this pack, so the Anchor Upgrade and the Dimensional Stabilizer both work.[13]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

5 parts

In this pack, Mekanism has its own quest chapter, and every path in it starts from one machine: the Metallurgic Infuser "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest. The World Engine tier 1 chapter asks for the Infuser too "Infusing Metals" quest, and a follow-up quest there wants a Basic Control Circuit "Reinforcing Machine Frames" quest. That makes the Infuser one of the first things you should build.[4][7]

Early game: alloys, circuits and steel

Once the Infuser is placed, the chapter opens several branches. One asks for Infused Alloy, a Basic Control Circuit and an Advanced Control Circuit a quest in "Mekanism". The Basic Control Circuit is made inside the Metallurgic Infuser. For the Advanced Control Circuit you get a choice: you can craft it at a crafting table or make it in the Infuser.[4][10]

Another branch is steel. Collect Enriched Iron and a steel ingot "Making Steel" quest. That unlocks the Configurator a quest in "Mekanism" and, more importantly, Steel Casing a quest in "Mekanism".[4]

Steel Casing is the real gateway, because most of the basic machine quests hang off it:[4]

Watch out: The pack has changed the Fuelwood Heater recipe, so don't rely on a recipe you remember from other packs. Check the recipe below before you plan your thermal evaporation build.[4][10]

Finishing both of those branches unlocks the fission reactor quest. It asks for Fission Reactor Casing, Fission Reactor Port, Reactor Glass, Control Rod Assembly and Fission Fuel Assembly "Mekanism Fission Reactor" quest. From there the chapter branches into three quests: the Fission Reactor Logic Adapter "Fission Reactor Logic Adapter" quest, the turbine parts "Mekanism Turbine" quest, and Plutonium Pellet plus Polonium Pellet "You say Polonium, I say Plutonium" quest.[4]

Late game: fusion, SPS and antimatter

The pellet quest opens up the fusion reactor, which needs the controller, port, frame, reactor glass, Laser Focus Matrix, Laser Amplifier and Hohlraum "Fusion Reactor" quest. It also unlocks a quest for Reprocessed Fissile Fragment "Reprocessed Fissile Fragments" quest.[4]

The SPS quest asks for SPS Casing, SPS Port, Supercharged Coil and Structural Glass "Supercritical Phase Shifter" quest. Completing it leads into the World Engine tier 5 quest, which wants a Chemical Crystallizer and an Antimatter Pellet "Antimatter" quest. The Bounty Board chapter also asks for an Antimatter Pellet "Antimatter Pellet Trade" quest.[4][14][15]

Unverified The quest that unlocks the SPS quest is not included in the sources, so which part of the pack gates the SPS is unverified.

Tip: The pack adds a Chicken Roost recipe that produces Antimatter Pellet. This gives you a second way to get antimatter besides Mekanism's own machines.[10]

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

5 parts

Mekanism is tied into this pack with a set of pack-added recipes. You'll use it to make other mods' parts, and other mods' materials run through Mekanism machines.[10]

Ore processing for pack metals

Mekanism advertises its purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization steps as the way to get more ingots out of every ore. The pack extends those steps to FTB Materials metals, so their ores, raw materials, raw storage blocks, shards and crystals feed into Mekanism processing.[1][10]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Mekanism?

2 parts

Mekanism is all over the questbook in this pack. It has its own dedicated chapter that walks you from your first machine to reactors, and its gear, storage, power and endgame parts also appear in about a dozen other chapters. Here's the route, in order.[4][5][6][7][9][12][14][15][16][17][18][19]

The Mekanism chapter

  1. Everything starts with "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest, which just asks for a Metallurgic Infuser.[4]
  2. That unlocks four branches. a quest in "Mekanism" wants Infused Alloy, a Basic Control Circuit and an Advanced Control Circuit. "Making Steel" quest wants Enriched Iron and a steel ingot. "Radiation and You" quest wants the full hazmat set (Hazmat Mask, Hazmat Gown, Hazmat Pants, Hazmat Boots) plus a Radioactive Waste Barrel. "Fissile Fuel" quest wants the Rotary Condensentrator, Chemical Dissolution Chamber, Chemical Infuser and Isotopic Centrifuge.[4]
  3. After the Enriched Iron quest you can grab a Configurator in a quest in "Mekanism" and a Steel Casing in a quest in "Mekanism".[4]
  4. The Steel Casing quest opens up the core machines, each in its own quest: Configuration Card (a quest in "Mekanism"), Energized Smelter ("Our First Powered Furnace" quest), Gauge Dropper (a quest in "Mekanism"), Electrolytic Separator ("The Electrolytic Separator" quest), Crusher ("The Crusher" quest) and Enrichment Chamber ("The Enrichment Chamber" quest). It also unlocks the thermal evaporation plant in "Thermal Evaporation Towers" quest: a Thermal Evaporation Controller, Thermal Evaporation Valve, Thermal Evaporation Block, and either a Fuelwood Heater or a Resistive Heater.[4]
  5. The Crusher leads to Bio Fuel in "Bio Fuel" quest, and the Enrichment Chamber leads to the Pressurized Reaction Chamber in a quest in "Mekanism". Finish both and a quest in "Mekanism" asks for Substrate, an HDPE Pellet and an HDPE Sheet.[4]
  6. With the hazmat and chemical machine quests done, "Mekanism Fission Reactor" quest asks for the fission reactor parts: Fission Reactor Casing, Fission Reactor Port, Reactor Glass, Control Rod Assembly and Fission Fuel Assembly.[4]
  7. Fission branches into three quests. "Fission Reactor Logic Adapter" quest wants the Fission Reactor Logic Adapter. "Mekanism Turbine" quest is the industrial turbine: Turbine Casing, Structural Glass, Turbine Vent, Pressure Disperser, Turbine Valve, Turbine Rotor, Rotational Complex and Electromagnetic Coil. "You say Polonium, I say Plutonium" quest wants a Plutonium Pellet and a Polonium Pellet.[4]
  8. The pellet quest leads to Reprocessed Fissile Fragment in "Reprocessed Fissile Fragments" quest and to the fusion reactor in "Fusion Reactor" quest: Fusion Reactor Controller, Fusion Reactor Port, Fusion Reactor Frame, Reactor Glass, Laser Focus Matrix, Laser Amplifier and a Hohlraum.[4]
  9. The chapter also includes the SPS in "Supercritical Phase Shifter" quest: SPS Casing, SPS Port, Supercharged Coil and Structural Glass. Its prerequisite is not one of the quests listed in the Mekanism chapter.[4]

Which Mekanism config options matter?

4 parts

Good news first: this pack leaves almost all of Mekanism's config at the mod defaults, so most wiki numbers and videos you've seen still apply here. There's one real change you'll feel in the late game, plus a few settings worth knowing about when you plan your base.[13][20][21]

The big change: cheaper antimatter

The pack lowers sps.energyPerInput to 250,000, down from the mod default of 1,000,000. That's the energy the SPS needs to process 1 mB of input, so your SPS needs only a quarter of the usual power per mB of polonium. The amount of polonium per mB of antimatter, sps.inputPerAntimatter, stays at the default of 1,000 mB.[13]

Tip: If you're following an SPS power guide made for default Mekanism, you can build a smaller power setup here, because each mB of input costs 250,000 energy instead of 1,000,000.[13]

Settings that shape how you play

Mekanism Additions

In this pack's Additions config, Baby Skeletons, Baby Strays and Baby Bogged can spawn. Baby Creepers, Baby Endermen and Baby Wither Skeletons are switched off. The Walkie Talkie voice server, voice_server.enabled, is disabled. Obsidian TNT keeps its default blast radius of 12 and a fuse of 100 ticks.[20]

Client settings you can tweak yourself

These are client-side settings, so you can change them for your own game. If transmitters tank your FPS, turn on accessibility.opaqueTransmitters to render their sides instead of their contents. Lowering rendering.berRange from its 256 default can also help performance, but multiblock contents and wind generators will pop in closer to you.[21]

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Mekanism version 10.7.19 (file Mekanism-1.21.1-10.7.19.85.jar) and Mekanism Generators version 10.7.19 (file MekanismGenerators-1.21.1-10.7.19.85.jar). Both mods run on the same version, so the core machines and the generators add-on stay in sync.[3]

Both mods were first included in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 or earlier, so they have been part of your StoneBlock 4 toolkit at least since this release.[3]

Unverified No pack changelog entries or mod changelogs are available for these versions, so the specific changes to Mekanism and Mekanism Generators across pack releases, such as recipe tweaks, balance changes or bug fixes, can't be confirmed here. Check the pack's release notes in your launcher if you want the full details.
