What is Mob Grinding Utils?
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
This pack includes Mob Grinding Utils version 1.1.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1. The sources here only show it through the pack's quest book, so this overview covers what the quests ask of you.[1]
The pack's quest book places the mod in the "resource_generation" chapter. Its quests there are about getting hold of the mod's own items.[2]
- Quest "Mob Mashing" quest has item tasks for the Mob Masher and the Mob Masher Upgrade Looting.[2]
- Quest "Moving Mobs" quest asks for the Mob Fan or the Entity Conveyor. Either item completes the task.[2]
Both quests are untitled in the pack's quest data, and they sit in the same chapter. The sources don't show what comes before or after them.[2]
Unverified The sources here do not show how these items work, their recipes, or any config changes the pack makes to this mod. They also do not show whether the ATM Star path uses the mod, and no in-jar guidebook was available. Check the quest chapter in-game for those details.
How do you get started with Mob Grinding Utils?
5 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Mob Grinding Utils gives you the tools to kill mobs and collect what they drop, including XP. In this pack's quest book, the mod's first appearances are in the resource_generation chapter, which asks for a Mob Masher and a way to move mobs around. Here is what to build first, and why.[2][3]
Iron Spikes
Iron Spikes are the basic killer in the mod, and the Mob Masher recipe uses them, so you make them first. They also drop the mob's XP. The catch is that mobs killed by spikes do not count as player kills.[3][4]

The Mob Masher
The Mob Masher is the mod's advanced modular mob grinder, and it is one of the tasks of quest "Mob Mashing" quest in the resource_generation chapter. Unlike spikes, mobs it mashes do count as player kills. You can improve it with Mob Masher Upgrades.[2][3]

Getting mobs to the Masher
Another quest in that chapter, "Moving Mobs" quest, accepts either the Mob Fan or the Entity Conveyor. Pick whichever suits your build. The fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces and can take Mob Fan Upgrades. The conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector, and mobs can spawn on it.[2][3]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work?
7 parts
Mob Grinding Utils is a set of separate blocks that you chain together into a farm. The sources here don't describe any power system for it. What they do cover is how each block works, plus the fluid XP and item handling between them.[3]
Killing: Mob Masher and spikes
The Mob Masher is the mod's advanced modular mob grinder, and you improve it with Mob Masher Upgrades. Mobs it mashes DO count as player kills, so you get player-only drops.[3]
The upgrades each add +1 of an effect: Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Fire Aspect, Looting and Beheading. The pack caps the number of upgrades with masherMaxUpgrade, set to 10. That is the same as the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed it.[3][5]

Iron Spikes are the simpler option. They also drop the mob's XP, but mobs killed by spikes do NOT count as player kills.[3]
Moving mobs: fan and conveyor
The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces. Its area of effect can be toggled in its GUI, and you can shape it with upgrades: Mob Fan Distance Upgrade (distance, +1 each, max of 10), Mob Fan Height Upgrade (+1 each, max of 3) and Mob Fan Width Upgrade (+1 each, max of 3).[3][6]
In this pack fanStrongerBlades is false. When it is on, the fan blades are stronger and only more solid blocks block the fan.[5]
The Entity Conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector. Mobs can also spawn on it.[3]

Collecting: Absorption Hopper
The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. You can set it to push out on any side. Fluids go into tanks and items go into inventories.[3]
Each Absorption Radius Upgrade adds +1 to the radius, up to a max of 6. In its GUI you can toggle the area of effect and offset the position on the W/E, N/S and D/U axes.[3]

Spawning: Entity Spawner and special dirt
The Entity Spawner spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. It takes a mob egg in the top slot and is fuelled by Solid XP Jelly Babies. XP Speed Upgrades and the Spawner Height/Width Upgrades enhance it, and like the hopper it has an area toggle and position offset in its GUI.[3]

Delightful Dirt spawns more creature mobs, snow-caps at night if exposed to the sky, stops spawning below light level 10 and doesn't work in ocean biomes. Dreadful Dirt spawns more hostile mobs, ignites in daylight if exposed to the sky, and stops hostile spawns at light level 5 and above.[3]
The Golden Egg and the Rotten Egg each create a 5x5 area of Delightful Dirt and Dreadful Dirt respectively. You use them on grass, dirt, mycelium or farmland. Both dirts drop themselves only with Silk Touch. Otherwise they drop plain dirt.[3][7][8]
Tinted Glass lets you see inside the farm without letting light in, and it withstands Withers.[3]
Fluid XP: tanks, tap and solidifier
The Jumbo Tank is a larger Singularity Tank (Singularity Tank) that holds 1,024 buckets of any liquid. When you break it, it keeps its fluid, because its drop copies the stored fluid.[3][9]

The XP Tap attaches to the side of a tank and turns fluid XP back into orbs.[3]
The XP Solidifier turns fluid XP into edible XP jellies. It needs an XP mould and fluid XP in its tank. It can be set to export horizontally, and XP Speed Upgrades make it faster.[3]

The XP Mould Jelly Baby is the mould for XP Jelly Babies, and the pack has a solidifying recipe that turns it into an XP Jelly Baby. Those jellies are what fuel the Entity Spawner.[3][10]

Controlling the farm
- Ender Inhibitor Active: inhibits teleportation for entities up to 8 blocks away. It attaches to any side of solid blocks, and right-click toggles it on and off.[3]
- Ender Dragon Death Muffler: stops Ender Dragon death sounds within a 32 block radius. Right-click to hide the boss bar.[3]
- Wither Boss Death Muffler: stops Wither death sounds within an 8 block radius. Right-click to hide the boss bar.[3]

How do you progress through Mob Grinding Utils?
4 parts
The quest book places Mob Grinding Utils in the "Generating Resources" chapter (group "Forgotten Knowledge", chapter 13 of 22), with two quests for the mod: "Moving Mobs" quest and "Mob Mashing" quest. The quest data shows no prerequisite quest for either one. The stages below follow those two quests first, then the recipes.[10][11]
Stage 1: Moving mobs
The first quest, "Moving Mobs" quest, asks you to get the Mob Fan or the Entity Conveyor. Its text says the Mob Fan pushes mobs away from it and can be upgraded to increase its work area. It describes the Entity Conveyor as a floor block that pushes mobs in the direction of its arrow, and says a player who sneaks on top negates the effect.[11]

Stage 4: Spawning and control
The Entity Spawner comes at the end of this path. Its upgrades are Entity Spawner Width Upgrade and Entity Spawner Height Upgrade.[10]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Mob Grinding Utils connects to other mods in two main ways: a pair of World Engine recipes that the pack added, and a couple of quests in the quest book. Here's what the sources confirm.[10][11]
World Engine recipes
Two World Engine recipes use Mob Grinding Utils items. Both are custom machine recipes added by the pack. The first takes eight Mob Masher Upgrade Beheading upgrades and combines them with parts from Draconic Evolution and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, plus a vanilla Dragon Egg and Dragon Head. The recipe dump doesn't list what it produces, so check the recipe in game.[10]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)
Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/dragon_head
The second recipe uses the Singularity Tank together with Ender Tank from Ender Storage and Blazegold Ingot from Just Dire Things. Its output isn't listed in the dump either.[10]

Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/enderstorage_ender_tank_x2
In the quest book
The quests that cover this mod sit in the "Generating Resources" chapter. It's in the "Forgotten Knowledge" group and is chapter 13 of 22 in the book. Next to the mod's own quests, the chapter introduces other ways to automate resources, so you can compare approaches.[11]
- "Mob Mashing" quest covers the Mob Masher and the Mob Masher Upgrade Looting.[11]
- "Moving Mobs" quest covers the Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor.[11]
- "Apotheosis Spawners" quest is in the same chapter. It covers relocating and upgrading spawners with Apothic Spawners for your own mob farms.[11]
The quest book doesn't show text for 29 of this chapter's 49 quests here, so read the chapter in game for the rest.[11]
Mobs from other mods
Mob Grinding Utils ships its own data tags that mention other mods and vanilla mobs. Nothing in the sources shows the pack changing them.[12][13][14][15]
- The no_dirt_spawn entity tag lists two Alex's Mobs entities, the farseer and the centipede head, as optional entries.[12]
- The no_swab entity tag lists the Wither and the Ender Dragon.[13]
- The hostile_override biome tag lists the void biome from javd and the mining biome from jamd as optional entries. The passive_override biome tag lists cave and river biomes.[14][15]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Mob Grinding Utils?
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
In this pack, Mob Grinding Utils shows up in the resource_generation quest chapter. The quests there are untitled, so you'll recognise them by their tasks rather than by a name.[2]
- Quest "Mob Mashing" quest asks you to hand in the Mob Masher and the Mob Masher Upgrade Looting as item tasks.[2]
- Quest "Moving Mobs" quest asks for an item task that accepts either the Mob Fan or the Entity Conveyor.[2]
The chapter lists them in that order. So the quest book first has you get the Mob Masher together with its Looting upgrade, then either a Mob Fan or an Entity Conveyor.[2]
Which Mob Grinding Utils config options matter?
2 parts
Mob Grinding Utils keeps its server settings in config/mob_grinding_utils-server.toml. Here are the options from that file that the pack's sources show, and exactly how the pack sets them.[5]
Masher upgrades
masherMaxUpgrade sets the maximum number of upgrades for the masher. The pack sets it to 10, which matches the mod default, so the pack has not changed it. The allowed range is 0 to 10, so 10 is also the highest value you can use.[5]
Fan blades
fanStrongerBlades makes the fan blades stronger, so the fan is only blocked by more solid blocks. The pack has it set to false, so that stronger-blades behavior is switched off.[5]
