What is Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge?
1 part
Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge is an unofficial port of Create: Steam 'n' Rails to Minecraft 1.21.1. It aims to bring the features of the original railway addon over to the newer version. It is a fork of the original Create: Steam 'n' Rails repository, and it is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later.[1]
This pack ships version 0.3.0-beta.2+neoforge-mc1.21.1. It has been in the pack since Aero 1.0.3 or earlier, so it is not a recent addition.[2]
Things to know before you use it
- The port only actively supports the newest version of Create.[1]
- The project page warns that its alpha version carries the newest upstream 1.7 features but may have game-breaking bugs, and it recommends backing up your world before trying that alpha. The pack ships a beta build, but a backup before you start laying track is still a cheap precaution.[1][2]
- If you hit a bug, report it to the port's own issue tracker. The project asks you not to report problems with this port to the original Create: Steam 'n' Rails repository.[1]
How do you get started with Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge?
4 parts
Trains need rails first, so start with track. The pack changed the recipes for Narrow Andesite Train Track, Acacia Train Track and Monorail Train Track, so don't trust a recipe you remember from the standalone mod.[3]
Sequenced Assembly (create)
Recipe id: railways:sequenced_assembly/track_create_andesite_narrow
Narrow Andesite track, a recipe the pack changed.
The wide versions, Wide Andesite Train Track and Wide Acacia Train Track, have their own sequenced assembly recipes. Those two are left as the mod made them.[3]
Your first vehicle: the handcar
Once you have some track laid, craft a Handcar. The pack changed its recipe too, so check the one below.[3]
Crafting Shaped
| any wooden slab | any wooden slab | |
Recipe id: railways:crafting/handcar
Using a handcar builds up exhaustion based on your speed. The pack leaves misc.handcarHungerMultiplier at the mod default, so keep some food handy on long trips.[4]
Linking and stopping
Next, make Deco Coupler. One craft gives you 4 of them, and the pack changed this recipe as well.[3]

For the end of the line, the Track Buffer has a pack-changed recipe. The Big Buffer recipe is also changed, and it builds on the Small Buffer. Both recipes are shown below.[3]

Conductors and fuel
The Conductor Whistle is the next thing to craft, and the pack changed its recipe.[3]
Crafting Shapeless
Recipe id: railways:crafting/conductor_whistle
In this pack a conductor can be activated from up to 16 blocks away, set by conductors.activationDistance. conductors.mustOwnBoundTrain is false, so the whistle is not limited to the train's owner.[4]
You don't need fuel to get started. realism.realisticTrains is false in this pack, so trains do not require fuel to run. If you or a server admin turn it on, trains will need fuel from fuel tanks or from solid fuels in chests or barrels.[4]
The Fuel Tank recipe is pack-changed. realism.realisticFuelTanks is true, so fuel tanks only accept proper liquid fuels, and water can't go into them.[3][4]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: railways:crafting/fuel_tank
Paint and decoration
The mod's locometal blocks come in many colours, so you can add colour later. A Paint Brush has a pack-changed recipe, and the Empty Paint Pitcher recipe makes 5 pitchers per craft.[3][5]

How does Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge work?
5 parts
This mod is an unofficial port of Create: Steam 'n' Rails to Minecraft 1.21.1. It builds on Create, and the port only actively supports the newest version of Create. In this pack you build trains out of casings, boilers and locometal blocks, and most of the systems below are things you do with a wrench, a deployer or a Create machine.[1]
Building and assembling trains
Train casing has a built-in shortcut: press the Open Bogey Menu key (default ALT) to pick which bogey style gets placed.[5]
Train stations can assemble and disassemble trains for you. A deployer holding a wrench, hitting a station, does it automatically. Hoppers can be used to put a wrench into the deployer, so the whole thing can be automated.[5]
Boilers have two handy tricks. Use a wrench on the face of a boiler to switch to a different door style. Sneak while placing one to raise it up half a block. Track buffers can be dyed by clicking them with dye.[5]
Crafting boilers and locometal
Locometal blocks come in a huge range of colours and wrapping styles. A boiler is made from the matching wrapped locometal block. Here is the Create mechanical crafting version for the Black Brass Wrapped Locometal Boiler:[3]

The pack also adds its own route for the same boiler, using the Modern Industrialization constructor machine type. It is a pack recipe, not something the mod does by default.[3]
Ftb Constructor (modern_industrialization)
Recipe id: ftb:modern_industrialization/ftb_constructor/railways/black_brass_wrapped_locometal_boiler
The pack changed how the wrapped locometal blocks are crafted. Both the brass and the copper versions use pack-changed recipes, so don't trust older guides for these.[3]

Recolouring and cycling styles
You rarely need to craft each colour from scratch. The pack has 1,023 Create mixing recipes that turn one palette block into another colour, and 928 stonecutting recipes that cycle between styles within a colour. Here is one example of each for Black Brass Wrapped Locometal:[3]

Stonecutting
- any cycle group black wrapped brass palettes
Recipe id: railways:stonecutting/palettes/cycling/black_brass_wrapped_locometal
Paint is made by Create mixing too. This is the black version:[3]

Recipe id: railways:mixing/palettes/dye/black
Mixing (create)
Recipe id: railways:mixing/palettes/dye/chartreuse_from_yellow_green
The chartreuse paint mixing recipe has no item inputs and makes 250 Paint.
Tracks
Train tracks are made with Create sequenced assembly, with an incomplete track item passing through each step. The pack changed the recipe for Acacia Train Track. The wide version, Wide Acacia Train Track, is a separate recipe that takes the normal acacia track as an input.[3]

How the pack configures it
Fuel is the big one. realism.realisticTrains is false in this pack, so trains don't need fuel to run. realism.realisticFuelTanks is true, so fuel tanks only accept proper liquid fuels and water can't go into them.[4]
Conductors keep the mod defaults for range and update rate: conductors.activationDistance is 16 blocks, conductors.maxConductorVentLength is 64, and conductors.whistleRebindRate is 10. conductors.mustOwnBoundTrain is false, so the conductor whistle isn't limited to a train's owner.[4]
- misc.creeperTrackDamage is false, so creepers and ghast fireballs don't damage tracks.[4]
- misc.flipDistantSwitches is true, so you can control Brass Switches remotely while approaching them on a train.[4]
- misc.switchPlacementRange is 64 blocks, the maximum distance between the targeted track and a placed switch stand.[4]
- misc.strictCoupler is false. If it were on, the coupler would need its points on the same or adjacent track edge and would fail with any junction between them.[4]
- misc.unlimitedCreativeRelocation is false, so creative players are still bound by the distance restrictions when relocating trains.[4]
- semaphores.simplifiedPlacement is true, which means no upside-down semaphore placement. semaphores.flipYellowOrder is false.[4]
misc.handcarHungerMultiplier is the multiplier used to calculate exhaustion from speed when a handcar is used. The pack keeps the mod default for it.[4]
In the common config, disableDatafixer and registerMissingTracks are both false. The second one would register integration tracks for mods that aren't installed.[6]
How do you progress through Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge?
4 parts
Steam 'n' Rails recipes in this pack lean on Create processes and on the pack's own materials. To plan your progression, follow what each recipe asks you to be able to make. I group the recipes into stages below, starting with tracks and working up to boilers.[3]
First: tracks and your first vehicle
Tracks are made with Create's sequenced assembly. The pack changed the recipe for Narrow Andesite Train Track, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod. The wide version, Wide Andesite Train Track, uses the mod's own recipe and builds on Create's regular train track.[3]
Sequenced Assembly (create)
Recipe id: railways:sequenced_assembly/track_create_andesite_narrow
Pack-changed recipe for the narrow andesite track.
The Handcar is also a pack-changed recipe, shown below. The Acacia Train Track recipe is changed too, while Wide Acacia Train Track keeps the mod's own recipe. Monorail Train Track is pack-changed as well, and one run of its sequenced assembly gives 6 monorail tracks.[3]

Next: train hardware
Once you have track, you need the parts that make a train usable. The pack changed these recipes: Deco Coupler, Track Buffer, Big Buffer, Fuel Tank, Caboose Smokestack, Conductor Whistle and Remote Lens. Portable Fuel Interface and Minecart with Workbench still use the mod's own recipes.[3]

Then: locometal and boilers
Locometal is the mod's building palette. One stonecutting craft turns an iron block into 8 Riveted Locometal. The wrapped variants come in iron, copper and brass, and the pack changed all of those recipes. Each craft gives 8 wrapped blocks, for example Black Brass Wrapped Locometal.[3]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: railways:crafting/palettes/wrapping/black_brass_wrapped_locometal
Pack-changed recipe, makes 8 wrapped blocks per craft.
Boilers are where the pack adds something new. The mod's Create mechanical crafting recipe is still there and makes 4 boilers per craft. The pack also adds a Modern Industrialization constructor recipe that makes 1 boiler per craft. The dump lists 128 mechanical crafting recipes and 128 constructor recipes of this kind across the palette.[3]

Colours and decoration
Recolouring is mostly Create mixing and stonecutting. The dump counts 1,023 mixing recipes and 928 stonecutting recipes that take this mod's items and make this mod's items. Paint Brush has a pack-changed recipe. Black Conductor's Cap is made through sequenced assembly with the mod's own recipe.[3]

How does Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge work with other mods?
4 parts
Steam 'n' Rails is an add-on for Create, and the mod's page says it only actively supports the newest version of Create. In this pack that shows up in the recipes. Nearly everything you build for trains runs through Create items and Create-style machines, and the pack has also rewired many recipes to use FTB Materials items.[1][3]
Create
The Portable Fuel Interface is a plain mod recipe that combines Create parts. The Brass Track Switch is also an unchanged mod recipe built on Create's casing and mechanism parts.[3]

Recipe id: railways:crafting/track_switch_brass
The pack changed the Handcar and the Fuel Tank. Both are crafted from Create parts and the Fuel Tank also needs an FTB Materials item, so check the exact in-pack recipes below instead of relying on the mod's defaults.[3]

Tracks
Tracks are made with Create's sequenced assembly. The Wide Andesite Train Track is a mod recipe that builds on Create's Train Track. The wood and narrow andesite tracks are changed by the pack and use Zinc Nugget from FTB Materials.[3]

Locometal and flywheels
The pack has 32 Create item application recipes that turn a Create Flywheel into a coloured Locometal flywheel by applying a riveted locometal block. These are unchanged mod recipes.[3]
Item Application (create)
Recipe id: railways:item_application/palettes/flywheels/black
Brass wrapped locometal is different. There are 32 shaped crafting recipes that mix this mod's locometal with FTB Materials items, and the pack changed the ones shown here to use Brass Ingot.[3]

Other connections
- Conductor caps are made by Create sequenced assembly with a Precision Mechanism. These are unchanged mod recipes.[3]
- The Remote Lens is changed by the pack and combines a Create precision mechanism with FTB Materials and vanilla items.[3]
- Paint is mixed in Create's mixing recipes from Limestone, Ochrum or Scorchia.[3]
- The Vent Block is a stonecutting recipe that turns a Block of Industrial Iron into 2 vents.[3]
Which Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge config options matter?
4 parts
Steam 'n' Rails splits its settings across a server file for gameplay rules, a client file for visuals, and a small common file. Wherever the pack's files list a mod default, the pack's value matches it, so the pack has not changed those values. Here are the ones you're most likely to want to tweak.[4][6][7]
Gameplay rules (server file)
- realism.realisticTrains is false, so trains do not need fuel to run in this pack. If you turn it on, trains need fuel from fuel tanks or solid fuels in chests or barrels.[4]
- realism.realisticFuelTanks is true, so fuel tanks only accept proper liquid fuels. Water and similar liquids can't go in.[4]
- misc.creeperTrackDamage is false, so creepers and ghast fireballs can't damage your tracks.[4]
- misc.strictCoupler is false. If you enable it, the coupler needs its points on the same or an adjacent track edge, so any junction between the two points stops it working.[4]
- misc.flipDistantSwitches is true, so you can control Brass Switches remotely while approaching them on a train. misc.switchPlacementRange is 64 blocks (the mod default, with an allowed range of 16 to 128).[4]
- misc.unlimitedCreativeRelocation is false, so creative players are not given unlimited distance when relocating trains.[4]
Conductors and semaphores
- conductors.activationDistance is 16 blocks, the mod default. That's how far away you can activate a conductor by looking at it.[4]
- conductors.mustOwnBoundTrain is false, so the conductor whistle is not limited to the train's owner.[4]
- conductors.whistleRebindRate is 10 and conductors.maxConductorVentLength is 64, both the mod defaults.[4]
- semaphores.simplifiedPlacement is true, so there is no upside-down semaphore placement. semaphores.flipYellowOrder is false.[4]
Visuals (client file)
- client.smoke.smokeType is set to CARTOON (the other choices are VANILLA and OLD). With it, client.smoke.cartoon.spawnFasterPuffs is true and client.smoke.cartoon.spawnSteam is false.[7]
- The old smoke options are also set: client.smoke.old.smokeQuality is HIGH, client.smoke.old.smokeLifetime is 500 ticks, client.smoke.old.smokePercentage is 0.75, and client.smoke.old.thickerSmoke is true.[7]
- client.animatedFlywheels is true, and client.flywheelSpeedMultiplier is 0.5, the mod default.[7]
- client.skipClientDerailing is false. Turning it on prevents stuttering when a train places tracks, but trains won't appear derailed when they crash.[7]
- client.nvidiaShutdownWatchdog is true. It force-exits the game if it hangs on the NVIDIA Linux shutdown bug, and you can disable it if a driver update fixes the hang for you.[7]
Common file
Both disableDatafixer and registerMissingTracks are false. Don't enable the datafixer option if your world has pre-Create 0.5.1 monobogeys, because they will be destroyed. Both options are flagged as requiring a reload.[6]
What changed in Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge between versions?
2 parts
Your pack, FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0, ships Steam 'n' Rails Neoforge 0.3.0-beta.2 for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0.3 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs for the two most recent releases.[2]
0.3.0-beta.2 (the version in your pack)
This one is mostly bug fixes, and a few of them matter if you're building real trains.[8]
- Fixed a client crash when hovering over a signal whose track had been broken.[8]
- Fixed roller track replace mode never extracting tracks.[8]
- Fixed the flywheel spin direction flipping with the train's world heading.[8]
- Fixed see-through semaphore lamps.[8]
- Fixed disguised conductor players keeping the full-size hitbox.[8]
- Fixed an incorrect texture reference for the radial bogey.[8]
- Fixed a regression that made narrow and wide tracks uncraftable.[8]
- Fixed uncraftable recipes involving colorless glass.[8]
- Ported the Official Simplified Chinese translation.[8]
