What is GeOre?

2 parts

GeOre adds crystal-style resource farming. Instead of mining a material, you grow it: budding blocks like Budding Iron GeOre sprout small crystal buds, and once those grow into full clusters you harvest shards such as the Iron GeOre Shard for processing. The pack ships GeOre 6.2.3, and the mod has been in the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier.[1][2]

How you get GeOres in this pack

The quest book names several ways to get them. Regular materials like Coal, Iron or Copper spawn as islands in the world, while Diamond, Emerald, Netherite and Platinum only spawn in the Nether. Most of your GeOres come from using specific items on a Void Crystal Catalyst. Some metals can also be cast in the Productive Metalworks Foundry. Tungsten, Monazite and Black Quartz have special crafting recipes, so check JEI for those.[2]

For your first one, use White Dye on the Void Crystal Catalyst to turn it into Iron. When the clusters are fully grown you can break them or right-click them. Right-clicking with your hand gives 2 shards, and right-clicking with a pickaxe gives more depending on the tool's fortune level.[2]

Where the quest book puts it

GeOre shows up in the "Getting Started" chapter, which is chapter 4 of 31 in the book and sits in the "Main Questline" group. That chapter has 57 quests, and I only have the text for some of them.[2]

Tip: Start with the Clusters of Creation quest and then read the untitled quest right after it. Together they cover the Iron setup and every way to get more GeOres.[2]

How do you get started with GeOre?

4 parts

In this pack, GeOre is one of the ways you get your first resources. A budding GeOre block grows small crystal buds, and once they are fully grown clusters you break them or right-click them to get shards. The quest book covers it in the "Getting Started" chapter of the Main Questline.[2]

Your first steps, in order

  1. Start with the Path of Crystalmancy quest "Path of Crystalmancy" quest. It has you combine Grains of Infinity with some Cobblestone to make a Void Crystal Catalyst. Dyed in-world, that block becomes a Budding Crystal, and the dye decides which basic resource you generate.[2]
  2. Do Clusters of Creation "Clusters of Creation" quest next. The quest calls iron the first resource you want to create: use White Dye on the catalyst to get Budding Iron GeOre. Small crystal buds of iron then grow from the block.[2]
  3. Wait for the buds to grow into proper clusters, then harvest them. Right-clicking with your hand gives 2 Iron GeOre Shard, and right-clicking with a pickaxe gives more shards depending on the tool's fortune level. Breaking the cluster also works.[2]
  4. Read the untitled quest that follows Clusters of Creation. It lists the 3 ways to get GeOres: exploration, the Void Crystal Catalyst (where you will get most of them), and Productive Metalworks Foundry casting. It also says Tungsten, Monazite and Black Quartz GeOres have special crafting recipes you should look up in JEI.[2]
  5. Keep going to Proper Materials "Proper Materials" quest. It asks for an iron ingot, and many later quests in the chapter come after it.[2]
Watch out: Crystal Boosting "Crystal Boosting" quest is a one-time starter bonus. Checking its checkmark puts your team on the Path of Crystalmancy and locks out the other 2 path rewards. You can use all 3 resource methods, but you only get 1 bonus Boost for your preferred one.[2]

Shards and blocks

The pack adds crafting recipes that turn a GeOre block into 4 shards. Here is the one for iron:[3]

A note on world generation

In this pack, General.generateIronGeore is set to false, and so are the matching options for coal, copper, diamond, emerald, gold and several other GeOres. The mod's default for those General options is true, so the pack has changed it.[4]

Looking ahead: diamonds

Your First Diamonds "Your First Diamonds" quest lists Budding Diamond GeOre among its items. The pack also has a foundry casting recipe for it:[2][3]

How does GeOre work?

7 parts

GeOre is a block-based mod. In this pack you work with its growth blocks and the materials they give, and the pack's other mods do the machine work. The sources don't describe any GeOre machine, multiblock or power use, so this section covers how the blocks behave and how the pack lets you obtain them.[3][5]

The block family

Each GeOre material has the same set of blocks: a Budding block, Small, Medium and Large Bud blocks, a Cluster, a Shard, a storage Block and Tinted Glass. Examples are Budding Aluminum GeOre, Aluminum GeOre Cluster, Aluminum GeOre Shard and Block Of Aluminum GeOre.[3][5]

No natural generation

The pack turns every GeOre generation option off. That includes the vanilla-style ones that default to on, such as General.generateDiamondGeore, General.generateIronGeore and General.generateBuddingAncientDebris. It also includes the modded ones, such as ModdedGeneration.generateAluminumGeore and ModdedGeneration.generateOsmiumGeore, which default to off anyway. So the pack uses recipes to give you budding blocks instead.[4]

Watch out: General.disablePistonPushForBuddingGeOre is false in this pack, which is also the default. That means the vanilla behavior stays: a piston pushing a budding GeOre block breaks it.[4]

Getting budding blocks

The pack makes budding blocks through recipes, each in a different mod's machine. Aluminum, diamond and ancient debris are cast with Productive Metalworks. The ancient debris recipe uses a Budding Diamond GeOre block as its input, so it is the next step up from the diamond one.[3]

    Clusters from Loot Llamas

If the Llamapalooza mod is loaded, the pack has a script that lets you change what a Loot Llama drops by using an item on it. Iron, gold, copper, diamond, emerald, lapis, redstone, coal and quartz each set the llama's loot table to the matching GeOre cluster loot table. Each try has a chance value. Most are 0.05, diamond and emerald are 0.01, and coal is 0.1. A failed try shows smoke particles.[6]

    Metals removed by the pack

The pack removes the recipes for Allthemodium, Unobtainium and Vibranium GeOre, including their budding blocks, buds, clusters, shards, blocks, spyglasses and tinted glass, and hides these items from recipe viewers. It does the same for the matching GeOre Nouveau dowsing rods and golem charms. Their generation options are also off in the config.[4][7]

How do you progress through GeOre?

    5 parts

GeOre progression in this pack follows the quest book. After the early-game quests, the Generating Resources chapter splits GeOres into three groups: basic, foundry and niche. All three hang off the GeOres quest, so you can chase them in whatever order suits your base.[8]

    Your first budding block

The path starts in the Getting Started chapter. Path of Crystalmancy "Path of Crystalmancy" quest has you turn Grains of Infinity and Cobblestone into a Void Crystal Catalyst, which you then dye in-world to make a Budding Crystal. The dye decides what the block grows.[2]

Clusters of Creation "Clusters of Creation" quest makes iron your first resource. Use White Dye on the catalyst to get Budding Iron GeOre, and small buds will grow on it. Once they are full clusters, break them or right-click them for Iron GeOre Shard. Right-clicking with your hand gives 2 shards, and right-clicking with a pickaxe gives more depending on its Fortune level.[2]

Watch out: Crystal Boosting "Crystal Boosting" quest is the one-time starter bonus for Crystalmancy. Checking its checkmark puts your team on the Path of Crystalmancy and locks out the other 2 path rewards. You can still use all three resource methods, but you only get one bonus.[2]

Proper Materials "Proper Materials" quest comes after Clusters of Creation, Essential Waters and The Old Ways. It is the point where iron should be easy enough to push on into vanilla and modded progression.[2]

An untitled quest right after Clusters of Creation a quest in "Getting Started" sums up how you get GeOres. Regular materials like coal, iron and copper spawn as islands. Diamond, emerald, netherite and platinum only spawn in the Nether. Most of the rest come from using items on a Void Crystal Catalyst. Some metals are cast in the Productive Metalworks Foundry, and tungsten, monazite and black quartz have special recipes you can look up in JEI.[2]

    Tier 1: Basic GeOres

Basic GeOres "Basic GeOres" quest unlocks after the GeOres quest "GeOres" quest. Most of these resources, such as copper and redstone, come from using a dye on a Void Crystal Catalyst to turn it into the matching budding block. The quest asks for any one of these shards:[8]

    Tier 2: Foundry GeOres

Foundry GeOres "Foundry GeOres" quest comes after both the GeOres quest and the Productive Metalworks Foundry quest. These budding blocks are made by pouring molten material over a Void Crystal Catalyst in a casting basin. You need to find some of the resource first, and then you can make more of it. The quest covers these shards:[8]

The quest suggests finding the first bit through exploration and looting, general ore producers like the Lens of the Miner, or sacrificing creatures to a Foundry. Some of these may be easier with a small dip into other resource paths. Here is how the pack casts a Budding Diamond GeOre:[8]

Budding Diamond GeOreAdded by the pack

    Block Casting (productivemetalworks)

    Recipe id: ftb:productive_metalworks/block_casting/budding_diamond

Osmium is the exception. The quest gives it an alternate recipe that binds certain ingredients in a puddle of Molten Ender, and the pack implements it as an AE2 transform recipe.[3][8]

Budding Osmium GeOreAdded by the pack

    Transform (ae2)

    Recipe id: ftb:ae2/transform/budding_osmium

    Tier 3: Niche GeOres

Niche GeOres "Niche GeOres" quest covers three exceptional budding blocks: Budding Black Quartz GeOre, Budding Tungsten GeOre and Budding Monazite GeOre. Black Quartz and Tungsten are made by exploding a Void Crystal Catalyst together with the appropriate resource. Monazite comes from a unique chemical process, and the quest says you should only need it for progression in Modern Industrialization. In this pack it is made in a mixer:[3][8]

Budding Monazite GeOreAdded by the pack

    Mixer (modern_industrialization)

    Recipe id: ftb:modern_industrialization/mixer/budding_monazite_from_dusts

    What the pack changes

    • The pack removes the Allthemodium, Unobtainium and Vibranium GeOre blocks, clusters, shards, tinted glass, spyglasses, buds and budding blocks, and hides them from recipe viewers. You will not find a tier for those here.[7]
    • The pack adds recipes that compact shards into blocks and split blocks back into 4 shards. This is the iron version:[3]
    • The pack also adds Oritech laser recipes that turn clusters into shards, and Xycraft Extractor recipes that produce shards.[3]
    • A pack script checks for the Llamapalooza loot llama. Feeding it the matching item gives it a chance to switch to a cluster loot table. The chance is 0.05 for iron, 0.1 for coal and 0.01 for diamond and emerald. The clusters involved include Iron GeOre Cluster, Coal GeOre Cluster, Diamond GeOre Cluster and Emerald GeOre Cluster.[3][6]

How does GeOre work with other mods?

    7 parts

GeOre shards, clusters and blocks plug into a lot of the other mods in this pack. Almost all of that comes from recipes the pack adds itself, so you can take your crystal harvest into whatever tech or magic setup you like.[3]

Shards into dust, in any machine you like

The pack adds a shard-to-dust recipe for each of the main processing mods. A Coal GeOre Shard becomes Coal Dust in the EnderIO SAG mill, the Mekanism crusher, the Modern Industrialization macerator, Create crushing and the Oritech pulverizer. Diamond and emerald shards follow the same pattern and give Diamond Dust and Emerald Dust. Lapis shards give Lapis Lazuli Dust in the EnderIO, Mekanism, Modern Industrialization and Create versions.[3]

Two special cases: Mekanism enriching turns 3 Tungsten GeOre Shard into 4 Tungsten Dust. For Quartz GeOre Shard, the Oritech grinder and pulverizer recipes that produce Quartz Dust are changed by the pack.[3]

    Melting and smelting

Productive Metalworks melting and the fusing machine both turn shards into molten fluids. A Diamond GeOre Shard gives 100 Molten Diamond, and emerald, lapis and quartz shards give 100 of their own molten fluid. A Uranium GeOre Shard gives 90 Liquid Uranium. The recipe dump counts 54 Productive Metalworks melting recipes and 16 fusing machine recipes that use GeOre.[3]

In a plain furnace or blast furnace, a GeOre block gives 4 ingots, for example Block Of Aluminum GeOre into Aluminum Ingot. Lead, nickel and osmium work the same way. Gem GeOre blocks give 4 gems: Block Of Black Quartz GeOre gives Black Quartz and Block Of Topaz GeOre gives Topaz. A black quartz or topaz shard can also be smelted into a gem.[3]

Making budding blocks with other mods

Several budding blocks are made with other mods rather than found. Productive Metalworks block casting makes Budding Aluminum GeOre, Budding Diamond GeOre, Budding Emerald GeOre and Budding Osmium GeOre. The dump counts 9 casting recipes that produce GeOre blocks.[3]

The quest book covers this too. "Clusters of Creation" quest starts you on iron by using White Dye on the Void Crystal Catalyst, and the untitled quest right after it a quest in "Getting Started" lists the ways to get GeOres: exploration, the Void Crystal Catalyst and Productive Metalworks foundry casting. It also says tungsten, monazite and black quartz GeOres have special recipes you should check in JEI.[2]

    Platinum and Modern Industrialization

Platinum GeOre Shard can be turned into Platinum Sulfuric Solution in a Modern Industrialization chemical reactor, using Sulfuric Acid. The pack adds an Oritech centrifuge recipe for the same result.[3]

Ars Nouveau and Ars Caelum islands

The pack adds Ars Caelum island rituals, such as Conjure Island: Coal, Conjure Island: Copper, Conjure Island: Aluminum and Conjure Island: Black Quartz. Each one has two recipe versions: one built around a GeOre cluster, the other around GeOre blocks. The dump counts 25 recipes of each kind, and both use the Vexing Archwood Log.[3]

    Loot llamas

If the Llamapalooza mod is loaded, the pack's script lets you feed a loot llama to change what it drops. Feeding it an iron ingot, a gold ingot or a copper ingot gives a chance of 0.05 to switch it to the matching GeOre cluster loot table. Coal has a chance of 0.1, while diamond and emerald have only 0.01. A failed attempt just shows smoke particles, so you can try again.[6]

    What the pack removes

Watch out: The pack removes and hides the GeOre variants for Allthemodium, Unobtainium and Vibranium, along with their budding blocks, buds, clusters, shards, dowsing rods and golem charms, plus some echoing budding blocks and furnace upgrades from other mods. You won't find recipes for them in the recipe viewer.[7]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use GeOre?

    2 parts

GeOre quests show up in two chapters of the quest book. "Getting Started" (Main Questline group) walks you through making your first GeOre, and "Generating Resources" (Resources & Logistics group) explains the mod and its different kinds of budding blocks.[2][8]

    Getting Started

After "Cobble and Stone!" quest, an untitled quest explains that this pack lets you pick how you generate resources. You can do all 3 methods, but you only get 1 bonus Boost, for your preferred one. The GeOre route runs through the Path of Crystalmancy.[2]

    1. "Path of Crystalmancy" quest: the Crystalmancy path. It asks for Grains of Infinity Essence, a Void Crystal Catalyst and bone meal. The quest explains that combining Grains of Infinity with some cobblestone makes the catalyst, which you can then dye in-world to form a Budding Crystal for basic resources.[2]
    2. "Clusters of Creation" quest: comes after Path of Crystalmancy and asks for Budding Iron GeOre and Iron GeOre Shard. Use White Dye on the Void Crystal Catalyst and let the buds grow into full clusters. Then break them or right-click to get shards. Right-clicking with your hand gives 2 shards, and a pickaxe gives more based on its fortune level.[2]
    3. An untitled quest also follows Clusters of Creation. It lists 3 ways to get GeOres: exploration, the Void Crystal Catalyst, and Foundry casting. Regular materials like coal, iron and copper spawn as islands, while diamond, emerald, netherite and platinum only spawn in the Nether. Tungsten, Monazite and Black Quartz GeOres have special crafting recipes, so check JEI.[2]
    4. "Crystal Boosting" quest: the Crystalmancy path bonus. It comes after Clusters of Creation and Path Rewards Link.[2]
    5. "Proper Materials" quest: asks for an iron ingot and comes after Clusters of Creation, Essential Waters and The Old Ways.[2]
    6. "Your First Diamonds" quest: comes after Proper Materials. Its tasks include a diamond, a blazing mesh, Budding Diamond GeOre and diamond essence.[2]
Watch out: Checking the checkmark on Crystal Boosting sets your team on the Path of Crystalmancy and locks out the other 2 path rewards. Only do it if this is the path you want.[2]

    Generating Resources

The GeOre quests in this chapter branch out from "GeOres" quest. It explains that GeOres add geodes and their budding blocks. You can farm them by hand for 2 shards, or right-click with a pickaxe for more shards, scaling with Fortune. Budding blocks can't be moved by mining, but you can automate them with Golems, Annihilation Planes or other auto-miners. If you really need to move one, Mekanism's Cardboard Box works.[8]

The quest text for 30 of the 99 quests in this chapter is not covered here, so check the quest book for the rest.[8]

    Which GeOre config options matter?

    3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

GeOre has two config files in this pack, and the most important thing to know is that the pack switched off a lot of the mod's default ore generation. If you're wondering why you aren't stumbling across GeOres, start here.[9][10]

Values the pack changed from the mod default

In config/geore-common.toml, every option in the General section that controls generation is set to false, even though the mod default for each one is true. Here are the ones the pack turned off:[10]

Watch out: Because the pack disables generation for all of these, don't edit the file expecting a quick fix unless you know what you're doing. Flipping these back to true would change the pack's intended behavior compared with how it ships.[10]

    Modded ore GeOres

The ModdedGeneration section covers GeOres for ores added by other mods, and every option there is false by default. The pack keeps them all at false, so this is not a pack change. It covers ModdedGeneration.generateAllthemodiumGeore, ModdedGeneration.generateVibraniumGeore, ModdedGeneration.generateUnobtainiumGeore, and also options for tin, lead, silver, nickel, zinc, aluminum, osmium, uranium and more, such as ModdedGeneration.generateTinGeore and ModdedGeneration.generateOsmiumGeore.[10]

    Left at the mod default

    • General.disablePistonPushForBuddingGeOre is false, the same as the mod default. When enabled, it overrides the vanilla behavior of breaking the block when it's pushed by a piston, so in this pack that override is not active.[10]
    • Client.spyglassIntensity is 0.5, which is the mod default. It sets the intensity of the spyglass color overlay (0.5 means 50%), and the allowed range is 0.01 to 1.0. It's a client setting, so you can tweak it to taste.[9]
