What is Utilitarian?
2 parts
Utilitarian is a utility mod, and the pack ships version 1.21.1-0.19.2 of it. In this pack you'll mostly meet it through a handful of small helper blocks: Snad, Red Snad, Soul Snad, Angel Block and Redstone Clock.[1][2][3]
Where it shows up in the quests
The pack's "useful_items_tips" quest chapter points you at this mod twice. One quest, "SNAD" quest, is completed by obtaining any one of Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad. Another, "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest, asks you to get an Angel Block.[2]
The Redstone Clock appears in the "integrated_dynamics" chapter. In "Early Menril Automation" quest it's one of two items you need to hand in, together with an armor stand. That quest unlocks after two earlier quests in the same chapter, so you'll reach it as part of the Integrated Dynamics line rather than at the very start.[3]
Who it's for
Since the pack lists these items under its useful-items tips and in an automation-flavored chapter, they're worth picking up as you build out your base. Treat them as handy extras you'll bump into along the quest line.[2][3]
Unverified The sources don't describe what each Utilitarian block does, how it is crafted in this pack, or whether the pack changed any of its values, so none of that is covered here. There is also no confirmed place for the mod on the ATM Star path.
How do you get started with Utilitarian?
4 parts
Utilitarian adds small utility blocks and items. The pack's quest book points you to a few of them early, so start with those and add the rest when a build calls for them.[2][3]
First: Snad
The useful_items_tips quest chapter has a quest that asks for Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad (quest "SNAD" quest). Any one of them completes it. The Snad recipe is shown below.[2][4]
Next: Angel Block
In the same chapter, the Angel Block has its own quest (quest "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest). The mod also has a second recipe entry for it in the pack, and the recipe block below shows the main one.[2][4]

Then: Redstone Clock
The Redstone Clock appears in a quest in the integrated_dynamics chapter, alongside an armor stand (quest "Early Menril Automation" quest). The pack adds its own recipe for the clock in addition to the mod's one, and the block below shows the pack's version.[3][4]

The sources I have don't tie these to a quest, so craft them when they suit what you're building. Shift right click with the Trowel to change its pull setting.[4][5]

The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius.[4][5]
If arriving traders keep ending up in your face, put down a trader carpet: traders end up on that block instead. The white one is shown here, and every colour has its own recipe. The trapped versions will kill the trader, so only use those on purpose.[4][5]

How does Utilitarian work?
7 parts
Utilitarian isn't a power-and-pipes mod. The sources for this pack show a collection of small utility blocks and tweaks, most of them switched on or off and tuned from three config files. They don't describe any multiblocks, power systems or item-pipe handling, so this section covers only what the sources confirm.[5][6][7][8]
Fluid Hopper
The Fluid Hopper runs on a tick rate that you can change in fluidHopperTickRate. This pack sets it to 10, the same as the mod default. A lower number makes the hopper tick faster, so it works more often.[4][8]
Crafting Shaped
| any iron ingot | any white dye | any iron ingot |
| any iron ingot | any iron ingot | |

Recipe id: utilitarian:fluid_hopper
Redstone tools
The redstone clock block changes its pulse frequency when you right click it with an empty hand. Sneak while doing it to increase the frequency faster. minimumRedstoneClockTick sets the minimum tick rate for the clock. It is 5 in this pack (the mod default too) and accepts values from 1 to 24. The config comment says to set it higher if you're worried about performance.[5][8]
The TPS meter outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS.[5]
Lamps
The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. It's still dark, you just can't see it.[4][5]
Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: utilitarian:lapis_lamp
Both inverted lamps are crafted from their normal version plus a lever. The Inverted Lapis Lamp starts from the Lapis Lamp, and the Inverted Redstone Lamp starts from a vanilla redstone lamp.[4]
Sound muffler and wind charge
The sound muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius. soundMufflerBlockRange is 8 in this pack, the same as the mod default.[5][8]
The wind charge replenishes your breath under water. This is enabled in the pack through windChargeAirSupplyEnabled. Each charge refills 100 air (windChargeAirAmount), and a player's full air supply is 300.[5][8]
Snad, drit and growth
Snad applies extra growth ticks to what grows on it. The pack uses 5 extra ticks (additionalGrowthTicks), and sugar cane and cactus get 3 additional blocks of height on it (additionalGrowthHeight). Both match the mod defaults.[8]
Drit hurts when you step on it, and grass can grow on it. The damage is set by dritDamage, which is 2 in this pack, the same as the mod default. Grrass also hurts, and you shouldn't let it be struck by lightning.[5][8]
Trader and raider blocks
The Trader Carpets make arriving traders end up on the carpet instead of in your face. The Trapped versions kill the trader. Each trapped carpet is crafted from the matching normal carpet and a tripwire hook. Check the next paragraph before building around them.[4][5]
The pack sets noSolicitingEnabled to false. The No Soliciting Banner and the Restraining Order have their recipes under the same no_soliciting group. Their chunk-range options (noSolicitingChunkRangeBanner, noSolicitingChunkRangeCarpet and noSolicitingChunkRangePlayer) are all 6 chunks.[4][8]
Crafting Shapeless
Black Carpet

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/black_soliciting_carpet
The other carpet colours follow the same pattern with their own coloured carpet.
The Raider Outpost Claim Block is meant to be placed in an outpost to stop raiders from returning. Its module, noRaiderEnabled, is enabled in this pack.[4][5][8]
Other server toggles
- betterSleepEnabled is on. It removes the "too far away" and "there are monsters nearby" errors when you try to sleep.[8]
- noTramplingEnabled and cursedEarthEnabled are both on.[8]
- despawnWhenHoldingItems is on, so mobs can despawn even while holding items.[8]
- hoePlantingEnabled and flowerDuplicationEnabled are both off in this pack.[8]
The trowel changes its pull setting when you shift right click with it.[5]
How do you progress through Utilitarian?
3 parts
The sources here don't show a tier ladder for Utilitarian. What the pack's quest book does give you is a few quests that point at specific Utilitarian items, and they tell you roughly where each item fits in your progress.[2][3]
Early: Snad
The first Utilitarian checkpoint is in the useful_items_tips chapter. Quest "SNAD" quest has a single item task that accepts any of Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad.[2]
Each Snad variant is a shapeless craft from the matching vanilla sand type. Here are the recipes:[4]
Plain Snad, a mod recipe in the pack.
Red Snad, a mod recipe in the pack.
Soul Snad, a mod recipe in the pack.
Next: Angel Block
The same chapter has quest "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest, which asks you to obtain an Angel Block. The recipe list also has a second entry, angel_block_rot, which uses the same ingredients and gives the same block.[2][4]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | any feather | Empty slot |
| any gold ingot | any obsidian | any gold ingot |
| Empty slot | any feather | Empty slot |
Recipe id: utilitarian:angel_block

Later: Redstone Clock
The Redstone Clock shows up in the integrated_dynamics chapter. Quest "Early Menril Automation" quest asks for an armor stand and a Redstone Clock, and it unlocks only after other quests in that chapter are done.[3]
The pack adds its own Redstone Clock recipe alongside the mod's. The recipe list shows both, and the pack-added one is the first below.[4]

How does Utilitarian work with other mods?
2 parts
Utilitarian's links to other mods in this pack are small, but they are worth knowing. They come from a pair of jar recipes and a few quests.[2][3][4]
Industrial Fertilizer and the Snad blocks
The pack adds recipes in the ftbstuff:jar recipe type that connect Utilitarian's Snad and Red Snad with Immersive Engineering's Industrial Fertilizer. They also use regular Sand and Red Sand. These are pack additions, not something Utilitarian does by default.[4]

Quest connections
- In the useful_items_tips chapter, quest "SNAD" quest accepts any of Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad as its task.[2]
- In the same chapter, quest "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest has the Angel Block as its item task.[2]
- In the integrated_dynamics chapter, quest "Early Menril Automation" quest has a vanilla armor stand and the Redstone Clock as its item tasks. It comes after other quests in that chapter.[3]
Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Utilitarian?
3 parts
Utilitarian appears in quests in the useful_items_tips chapter and the integrated_dynamics chapter. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so you'll recognise them by their tasks. Each one asks you to get hold of an item.[2][3]
Chapter: useful_items_tips
- "SNAD" quest asks you to obtain Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad. Any one of them completes the task.[2]
- "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest asks you to obtain an Angel Block.[2]
Chapter: integrated_dynamics
"Early Menril Automation" quest asks you to get an armor stand (minecraft:armor_stand) and a Redstone Clock. It comes after "Extracting Menril" quest and "Drying Basin" quest in that chapter, so finish those first.[3]
Order
The only ordering the quest files confirm is inside the integrated_dynamics chapter, where the Redstone Clock quest follows the two quests it lists as prerequisites. The files do not place the two chapters in any sequence relative to each other.[2][3]
Which Utilitarian config options matter?
5 parts
Utilitarian splits its settings across a client, a common and a server file. Every numeric value in the server and client files that lists a mod default matches that default in this pack. The one value the files show as changed from the default is the startup ding sound, so start there.[6][7][8]
The one confirmed change from default
The pack sets dingDongSound to entity.evoker.prepare_wololo. The mod's default is entity.experience_orb.pickup. The startup sound itself is switched on through enableDingDongStartupSound, which is true.[7]
Gameplay modules the pack turns on
- betterSleepEnabled is true. It removes the "too far away" and "there are monsters nearby" errors when you try to sleep.[8]
- noTramplingEnabled, noRaiderEnabled and cursedEarthEnabled are all true, so those modules are active.[8]
- despawnWhenHoldingItems is true, so mobs can despawn even while holding items.[8]
- windChargeAirSupplyEnabled is true, so using a wind charge refills some of your air. windChargeAirAmount is 100 (the mod default), and a full player air supply is 300.[8]
Modules the pack leaves off
- flowerDuplicationEnabled is false, so bonemealing small flowers does not duplicate them the way it does for tall flowers.[8]
- hoePlantingEnabled is false, so the hoe planting module is disabled.[8]
- noSolicitingEnabled is false, so the No Soliciting module is disabled.[8]
- The No Soliciting chunk ranges (noSolicitingChunkRangeBanner, noSolicitingChunkRangeCarpet and noSolicitingChunkRangePlayer) are each 6, which is the mod default.[8]
Numbers you might want to tune
- minimumRedstoneClockTick is 5 (the mod default, range 1 to 24). The config comment suggests setting it higher if you're worried about performance.[8]
- fluidHopperTickRate is 10 (the mod default). A lower number makes the fluid hopper tick faster.[8]
- soundMufflerBlockRange is 8 blocks (the mod default).[8]
- additionalGrowthTicks is 5 (the mod default). It sets how many extra growth ticks apply when a plant is on snad.[8]
- additionalGrowthHeight is 3 (the mod default). It sets the additional height for sugar cane and cactus growing on snad.[8]
- dritDamage is 2 (the mod default), the damage you take when you step on drit.[8]
Quality-of-life and log settings
- disableRecipeAdvancements is true, so recipe advancements are disabled.[7]
- noStartupMessagesEnabled is true, and noStartupMessagesMessages holds one entry: the Ender IO alpha warning about expecting bugs and taking backups.[7]
- logSuppressorEnabled is false, and the starts-with, contains, ends-with and regex lists (logSuppressorStartsWithMessages, logSuppressorContainsMessages, logSuppressorEndsWithMessages and logSuppressorRegexMessages) are all empty.[7]
- On the client side, potionEffectTransparency is 0.2 (the mod default, range 0.0 to 1.0). It sets the transparency of the potion effect lines in first person.[6]
