What is Silent Gear?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.47 guide

Silent Gear is all about gear: tools, weapons and armor that you build yourself from parts, with the materials you pick deciding how your gear turns out. You can use pretty much anything vanilla uses for tools and armor, like wood, stone, flint, iron, diamond and netherite. It also supports metals that other mods add, plus Silent Gear's own crimson steel, azure electrum and tyrian steel.[1]

This pack runs Silent Gear 4.0.20.[2]

The gear list is huge. Tools include pickaxes, shovels, axes, paxels, mattocks, sickles, hammers that mine an area and excavators that dig an area. Weapons include swords, tridents, machetes, katanas, daggers, knives, bows, crossbows and slingshots. On top of that you get armor, elytra and curios like rings and bracelets.[1]

It's a great fit if you like tinkering. Every item needs a main part, such as a tool head or armor plates. Tools and weapons also need a rod, and some need a cord. Later you can grade your materials for better stats, add upgrades like tips and coatings, and combine materials into compounds.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Silent Gear quest chapter that walks you from your first crafted pickaxe all the way to the mod's advanced metals.[3]

  1. Start in a quest in "?" by getting a Template Board, a Pickaxe Template and a Pickaxe Head. Then turn them into your first Pickaxe in a quest in "?".[3]
  2. Make Blueprint Paper in a quest in "?". This opens up quests for blueprints of every gear type, the Blueprint Book and the Salvager.[3]
  3. After the Salvager, the quests move on to the Material Grader and the Recrystallizer. The Recrystallizer is one of the mod's compound-making blocks.[1][3]
  4. The Material Grader leads to quests for Glowing Dust, Blazing Dust and Glittery Dust. These are the tier 1, 2 and 3 grading catalysts. It also leads to the Alloy Forge.[1][3]
  5. The Alloy Forge leads to the Starlight Charger in a quest in "?". From there the quests continue to Starmetal Dust, Azure Silver Dust, a Block of Azure Electrum and a Block of Tyrian Steel.[3]
Tip: The quest line starts you off with a template, but a template is used up after a single craft. Blueprints work exactly the same way and can be reused forever, so switch to them once you have Blueprint Paper.[1][3]

How do you get started with Silent Gear?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.47 guide

Silent Gear is all about building your own tools, weapons and armor out of parts, and this pack's quest chapter walks you through it in a clear order. Follow along and you'll go from a basic pickaxe to reusable blueprints in no time.[1][3]

Step one: your first pickaxe

The chapter kicks off with a quest in "?", which asks for a Template Board, a Pickaxe Template and a Pickaxe Head. Templates are your cheap entry point. They work exactly like blueprints, except a template is used up after one craft, while a blueprint can be reused forever.[1][3]

To make the head, combine the template with the right number of materials. The materials all have to be the same type, although their grades can differ. That head is the tool's main part.[1]

Next, craft the head together with a rod to finish your Pickaxe, which completes a quest in "?". You don't need anything fancy for the rod: a plain stick works fine if you have nothing better. Most tools also have a quick recipe if you'd rather skip the separate part step.[1][3][4]

      Step two: blueprint paper

Once you have the pickaxe, a quest in "?" asks for Blueprint Paper. This is the big unlock. Nearly every other quest in the chapter branches off from it, one quest per blueprint, and every blueprint recipe uses this paper.[3][4]

Because blueprints are reusable, it's worth making blueprints for the gear you use every day. Some good first picks:[1][3]

      • Pickaxe blueprint for a quest in "?", so you never have to craft another pickaxe template.[1][3]
      • Axe blueprint for a quest in "?" and shovel blueprint for a quest in "?" to round out your basic toolset.[3]
      • Sword blueprint for a quest in "?", which opens up more weapon quests, including the knife, dagger, katana, machete, spear, mace and trident blueprints.[3]

Once your blueprints start piling up, grab a Blueprint Book for a quest in "?". It stores your blueprints and acts like them, so it saves a lot of inventory space. That quest then leads to the rod blueprint in a quest in "?", which unlocks the tip, binding, grip and coating blueprints.[3][5]

Blueprint paper also unlocks the Salvager in a quest in "?". The salvager breaks some items down into their components, which is handy for old gear you've outgrown. After that, the chapter moves on to the Material Grader in a quest in "?". The grader improves your materials, starting with Glowing Dust as the tier 1 catalyst. From there the path continues to the Alloy Forge in a quest in "?".[3][5]

Tip: The pack's food and farming chapter has Silent Gear quests too: a quest in "?" for Flax Seeds and a quest in "?" for Flax String. In this pack you can also get flax seeds from a market recipe the pack added.[4][6]

        How does Silent Gear work?

        6 parts

Silent Gear works differently from most tech mods: the sources I have describe crafting-grid recipes, a few special blocks, and a lot of config values, but nothing about power, fluids, or pipes. This section covers what is confirmed.[1][7]

        How gear gets built

Every gear item needs a main part. Tools and weapons also need a rod, and some need a cord. You make the main part from a blueprint or template plus the right number of materials, then craft it with a rod. A plain stick works if you have nothing better.[1]

A blueprint can be reused forever, while a template is consumed on use. Otherwise they are identical. In the crafting station you can mix materials, but anywhere else the materials must all be the same.[1][8]

Bows, crossbows, and fishing rods need a cord as well as a rod, and you add both at the same time. Armor only needs a main part called plates, with an optional lining. Elytra need wings plus a binding.[1]

In this pack, gear.allowConversionRecipes is on, so you can drop a vanilla tool into a crafting grid to get the Silent Gear version. Blueprints and templates are both allowed, because item.blueprint.typesAllowed is set to BOTH.[7]

        Material Grader and catalysts

The material grader raises or lowers a material's grade. Grades run from E up to MAX, and each attempt uses up one catalyst. Grades are rolled randomly on a bell curve, so higher-tier catalysts make better grades more likely.[1]

By default the catalysts are glowing dust (tier 1), blazing dust (tier 2), and glittery dust (tier 3).[1]

This pack leaves the median grade for a tier 1 catalyst at C (materialGrader.median_grade), and each higher tier adds one grade. The spread is 1.5 (materialGrader.standardDeviation). Bigger values make both very high and very low grades more common.[7]

You can put an already-graded material back in to re-grade it. A higher roll replaces the grade, but a roll that is the same or lower changes nothing, and the catalyst is still used up.[1]

        Alloys and compound materials

The pack has a recipe for the Alloy Forge, shown below.[9]

        Alloy ForgeMod recipe

any crimson steel ingotEmpty slotany crimson steel ingot
        Blackstoneany iron storage blockBlackstone

        Recipe id: silentgear:alloy_forge

The project page describes a metal alloyer, a recrystallizer, and a refabricator that can combine up to four materials. You place two or more unique, simple materials in the input slots, then toggle the Work button once the preview looks right.[1]

        Starlight charging and salvaging

This pack sets starlightCharger.chargeRate to 50, which is the rate at which the starlight charger gathers energy during the night.[7]

When you salvage items, the share of parts you lose depends on how much durability is left on the item. This pack allows between 0 and 0.5, where 0 means no loss and 1 means complete loss (salvager.partLossRate.min and salvager.partLossRate.max).[7]

        Repairs and breaking

You can't repair gear by crafting two similar items together. Repair kits are the quick way. Craft them with materials to fill them, or with a stick to empty them, and craft them with a gear item to repair it. The material tier must be the same or higher than the gear's primary part.[1][8]

The pack also lets you repair in an anvil at 0.5 effectiveness (gear.repairs.anvilEffectiveness). Loose materials without a kit have an efficiency of 0 (item.repairKits.efficiency.missing), so kits are required here. The azure repair kit is one of the kits in the pack.[7][9]

        Recipe id: silentgear:azure_repair_kit

Gear that runs out of durability becomes a broken item you can still repair. That's because gear.breaksPermanently is false in this pack. The red card upgrade lets an item break permanently like vanilla gear.[7][8]

        Area tools

How do you progress through Silent Gear?

        4 parts

Silent Gear progression in this pack is driven by the quest chapter, and it works as a chain: you start with a basic pickaxe, unlock blueprints, and then move into machines and the metal alloys at the end. The sources only describe the quest order and the recipes. They don't describe numbered material tiers, so I only cover what is confirmed.[10]

        Step 1: Your first gear

The chapter opens with two quests. One asks for the Coating Smithing Template (a quest in "?"). The other asks for the Template Board, the Pickaxe Template and a Pickaxe Head (a quest in "?"). The next quest asks you to finish a Pickaxe (a quest in "?").[10]

If you already own a vanilla pickaxe, the pack has conversion recipes for the wooden, stone, iron, golden, diamond and netherite versions. Each one gives you a Silent Gear pickaxe, a pickaxe head and a tool rod. Converting the netherite pickaxe also gives you a Coating.[9]

        Recipe id: silentgear:coating_smithing_template

        Step 2: Blueprints

After the pickaxe, the quest line asks for Blueprint Paper (a quest in "?"). This quest unlocks almost everything else in the chapter. From here the chapter splits into many quests, one for each blueprint: Sickle Blueprint, Pickaxe Blueprint, Axe Blueprint, Shovel Blueprint, Bow Blueprint, Crossbow Blueprint, the armor blueprints and the jewelry blueprints, among others.[10]

The pack adds extra ways to make Azure Silver Dust and Blaze Gold Dust on top of the mod's own hammer recipes. These include Mekanism enriching and crushing, EnderIO SAG milling and ore hammers. Raw azure silver can also be crushed in an Actually Additions crusher.[9]

Tip: Flax has its own quests in the food and farming chapter: Flax Seeds (a quest in "?"), then Flax String (a quest in "?"). The pack adds a Farming for Blockheads market recipe for the seeds, and flax fiber can be turned into flax string.[9][11]

Unverified The sources don't confirm how Azure Electrum, Tyrian Steel and Crimson Steel are made, because those recipes are not in the data provided. They also don't list material tiers or grades.

How does Silent Gear work with other mods?

            Quests

The Silent Gear quest chapter tracks only Silent Gear items, such as blueprints, the Alloy Forge and the Starlight Charger. Flax items also appear in the food and farming chapter. None of these quests asks for an item from another mod, so the cross-mod connections above come from recipes.[10][11]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Silent Gear?

            4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.47 guide

Silent Gear shows up in two quest chapters in this pack. Most of it is in its own dedicated chapter, silent_gear, which walks you from your first part-built pickaxe through blueprints, the processing machines and finally the alloy metals. A small pair of quests in the food_and_farming chapter also covers the mod's flax.[3][6]

            The silent_gear chapter

The chapter opens with two quests side by side. a quest in "?" asks for a Coating Smithing Template. a quest in "?" asks for a Template Board, a Pickaxe Template and a Pickaxe Head. That second quest is the one that starts the main line.[3]

            1. Finish your first tool: a quest in "?" asks for a finished Pickaxe and unlocks after a quest in "?".[3]
            2. Make Blueprint Paper for a quest in "?". This is the big hub quest of the chapter, and almost everything else branches off it.[3]

            Blueprints

Once you have the paper, you can take on a large set of one-item blueprint quests in any order. They cover tools like the Pickaxe Blueprint (a quest in "?"), Axe Blueprint (a quest in "?"), Shovel Blueprint (a quest in "?"), Paxel Blueprint (a quest in "?"), Hammer Blueprint (a quest in "?") and Excavator Blueprint (a quest in "?"). They also cover armor, from the Helmet Blueprint (a quest in "?") down to the Boots Blueprint (a quest in "?"), plus ranged gear, curios and the Elytra Blueprint (a quest in "?").[3]

Two of these quests open further branches. a quest in "?" asks for the Sword Blueprint and unlocks the other bladed weapons: knife, dagger, katana, machete, spear, trident and mace, starting with a quest in "?" for the katana. a quest in "?" asks for a Blueprint Book and leads to the Rod Blueprint in a quest in "?". That quest then opens the part blueprints for coating, tip, binding and grip, for example a quest in "?" for the Grip Blueprint.[3]

            Machines and alloys

            1. Build a Salvager for a quest in "?", which also branches off the blueprint paper quest.[3]
            2. The salvager unlocks both the Recrystallizer in a quest in "?" and the Material Grader in a quest in "?".[3]
            3. The material grader leads to three dust quests: Blazing Dust, Glowing Dust and Glittery Dust. It also leads to the Alloy Forge in a quest in "?".[3]
            4. The alloy forge unlocks the Starlight Charger in a quest in "?".[3]
            5. The starlight charger opens the final set of alloy quests: Starmetal Dust, Azure Silver Dust, Blaze Gold Dust, a Block of Azure Electrum and a Block of Tyrian Steel. a quest in "?" asks for 4 of the Block of Crimson Steel.[3]

            Flax in food_and_farming

Over in the food_and_farming chapter, a quest in "?" asks you to pick up Flax Seeds. It is followed by a quest in "?", which wants Flax String.[6]

Which Silent Gear config options matter?

            5 parts

Silent Gear's settings live in gear.breaksPermanently's file, config/silentgear-server.toml. Everything below is what this pack sets. The pack file only shows the current values, so it doesn't tell us which ones differ from the mod's own defaults.[7]

            Breaking and durability

            • gear.breaksPermanently is false, so gear does not break permanently the way vanilla tools and armor do. gear.sendBrokenMessage is true, so you get a chat message when an item breaks, with a hint that it can be repaired.[7]
            • nerfedItems.enabled is false. That means the whole vanilla-tool nerf group is ignored, including its durability multiplier of 0.05, its harvest speed multiplier of 0.5 and the list of wooden to diamond axes, hoes, pickaxes, shovels and swords.[7]
            • gear.damageFactorLevels is 10. It controls how often gear recalculates its stats as it takes damage.[7]

            Repairs

Anvil repairs run at an effectiveness of 0.5 via gear.repairs.anvilEffectiveness. gear.repairs.quickEffectiveness is set to 0.35, but the config marks it as deprecated in favor of the repair kit settings.[7]

item.repairKits.efficiency.missing is 0. Repairing with loose materials and no repair kit is therefore not allowed here; the config notes that any value above zero would make kits optional.[7]

Repair kit capacity grows with the kit tier:[7]

Efficiency follows the same order. The azure kit is the best at 0.5 (item.repairKits.efficiency.azure), and the lower tiers step down from there through item.repairKits.efficiency.crimson, item.repairKits.efficiency.sturdy and item.repairKits.efficiency.crude to item.repairKits.efficiency.very_crude.[7]

            4 parts

All the Mods 10 1.25 ships Silent Gear 4.0.9, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.64 or earlier. Here's what changed in the mod's updates leading up to that version, so you know where the current behaviour comes from.[12]

4.0.9 (2024-11-24, the version in this pack)

            • Fixed the Renew trait not functioning correctly.[13]
            • Fixed armor items having the wrong armor toughness value, and shears having zero attack speed.[13]
            • Fixed smithing recipes that left the output slot empty while still modifying the input gear item.[13]
            • Added a few missing tags.[13]

            4.0.8 and 4.0.6

            • 4.0.8 made the new level_hint field of HarvestTier optional.[14]
            • 4.0.6 added the silentgear:attach_data_components trait effect type, which applies a components patch to an item, with the Yummy trait as an example.[15]
            • 4.0.6 also added JEI support for the super mixer, fixed JEI plugin errors, and fixed some alloy recipes not outputting the correct number of items.[15]
            • Also in 4.0.6, one of the new gear damaged sounds was replaced with two based on the item breaking sound, like older versions of the mod.[15]

            4.0.5 and 4.0.4

            • 4.0.5 added new stone anvil sound effects, with the sound determined by the recipe.[16]
            • Bows, crossbows and slingshots had been dealing vanilla damage and ignoring the ranged damage property. 4.0.5 fixed that, and made bows and crossbows enchantable.[16]
            • 4.0.4 added Better Combat support and a creative tab with sample gear items, mostly meant for testing.[17]
            • Furnace fuel burn times moved to the NeoForge data map in 4.0.4, and the netherwood charcoal burn time config option was removed.[17]
            • 4.0.4 fixed alloy makers missing their last input slot, sickle behavior errors, and netherwood sticks not working as fuel.[17]

            4.0.3 and 4.0.2

            • 4.0.3 replaced the gear item damage factor change sound with new sounds and removed its config option. A resource pack can change or remove them.[18]
            • 4.0.3 fixed crimson iron and azure silver ores not generating correctly, plus crashes with hoppers feeding a material grader and with sheet metal that has no material.[18]
            • 4.0.2 added the Crude Knife and Crude Hammer, which are very cheap to craft and work with stone anvil recipes, plus advancements for the stone anvil and crude knife.[19]
            • 4.0.2 introduced the Super Mixer, which can make alloys from anything. It was a work in progress with no recipe at that point.[19]
            • The default blueprint package loot table changed in 4.0.2 to give blueprints for rod, pickaxe, shovel, axe, hoe and sword.[19]
            • 4.0.2 fixed wielder effect traits like Flame Ward, and crashes from saws and from gear items with invalid parts.[19]
