What is Silent Gear?
2 parts
Silent Gear is all about building your own tools, weapons and armor. Instead of crafting a fixed iron pickaxe, you pick the materials for each part, so the finished gear gets its stats from what you put in. The pack ships Silent Gear 4.2.1.1, and it needs Silent Lib to run.[1][2]
The mod covers a lot of gear: pickaxes, paxels, hammers, excavators, saws, swords, bows, crossbows, armor and even Elytra. Besides vanilla materials, it adds its own crimson steel, azure electrum and tyrian steel.[1]
Who it's for
If you like tuning your equipment and chasing better stats, this is your mod. Almost every recipe is shapeless and works in a normal crafting grid, and blueprints are what unlock each gear type. A blueprint can be reused forever, while a template is used up after one craft.[1]
What you'll meet in the pack
The pack has a dedicated Silent Gear quest chapter. It starts you on repair kits, which let you fix gear in a crafting grid without an anvil, then moves on to blueprints such as the Coating Blueprint, Binding Blueprint and Grip Blueprint.[3]
- The Salvager breaks gear back down into the items it was made from (see "Salvager" quest).[3]
- The Material Grader gives materials a grade, and better grades mean better stats. It uses catalysts: Glowing Dust (tier 1), Blazing Dust (tier 2) and Glittery Dust (tier 3).[1][3]
- The Alloy Forge makes custom alloys, and the quest book says it is the only way to get Tyrian Steel.[3]
- The Starlight Charger adds the Star Charged enchantment to materials. It needs a 7x7 structure under the night sky, with a pillar and cap in each corner, plus a charger catalyst per material.[3]
Silent Gear also feeds your early game. Flax Seeds can be found growing in grass, and Flax String can replace normal string.[4]
Unverified No source places Silent Gear on the ATM Star path, and no in-jar guidebook was found for it.
How do you get started with Silent Gear?
5 parts
Silent Gear is all about building your own tools, weapons and armor, and every gear item starts with a blueprint or a template. A blueprint can be reused forever, while a template is used up after one craft. Apart from that they work the same. Every item needs a main part, and tools and weapons also need a rod. A plain stick works fine as a rod while you're starting out.[1]
Step 1: Templates and blueprints
Your first crafts are the templates and blueprints for the gear you want. The mod's advancements point you to template boards, which you craft from a log using a knife or dagger, and the template recipes build on those boards. Here is the axe template as an example.[5][6]
Crafting Shaped

Blueprints work the same way but use blueprint paper, and you keep the blueprint after crafting. In the quest book, the blueprints (coating, lining, binding, fletching, mace, elytra and grip) sit after the Casts group in the Silent Gear chapter.[1][3][6]

Step 2: Flax for early string
Several blueprints, such as the alternate binding blueprint and the lining blueprint, take string. Flax Seeds can be found growing in fields of grass, and the quest calls flax great if you need a lot of string in the early game. Flax String can be used in place of normal string.[4][6]
Step 3: A repair kit
Silent Gear gear can be repaired without an anvil, so make a repair kit early. The quest accepts any of five kits, starting with the Very Crude Repair Kit.[3][6]

- Put the repair kit in a crafting grid together with the materials needed to repair your tool. This fills the kit.[3]
- Combine the filled kit with the tool you want to repair in a crafting grid.[3]
Step 4: Grade your materials
The Material Grader is your first machine. Put an ingot in it along with a grader catalyst and the material gets a grade. The better the grade, the better the stats, and the best grade is MAX. It needs an Advanced Upgrade Base to craft.[3][6]

The advancement for crafting a grader also gets you a tier 1 catalyst, Glowing Dust. Higher tiers use Blazing Dust for tier 2 and Glittery Dust for tier 3.[3][5]

Step 5: Salvager and Alloy Forge
In the quest book, the Salvager also sits after the Casts group, and the Material Grader quest comes after it. The Salvager breaks gear down into the items it was made from. For example, Diamond Boots give you 4 Diamonds back.[3]
The Alloy Forge quest comes after the grader. It is used to create custom alloys and is the only way to get Tyrian Steel.[3]

How does Silent Gear work?
5 parts
Silent Gear is mostly about crafting-grid gear, but it has a few machine-style blocks that shape how your materials turn out. This section covers what the sources explain about them: the material grader, compound making, the salvager, the starlight charger and repairs.[1][5]
Material grader and catalysts
Grades are material modifiers that apply an extra multiplier to some, but not all, stats. From lowest to highest they are E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, SSS and MAX. You grade materials in the material grader block, which needs a catalyst and consumes one catalyst per grading attempt. Grades are rolled randomly on a normal distribution.[1]
The catalyst tier sets the average grade, so higher tiers give better results. There are five possible catalyst tiers, defined by item tags, but only three have items by default: glowing dust (tier 1), Blazing Dust (tier 2) and glittery dust (tier 3). Crafting the grader itself also gives you a tier 1 catalyst through an advancement.[1][5]
Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: silentgear:blazing_dust
Blazing dust is the tier 2 catalyst for the material grader.
You can put an already graded material back into the grader. If the new roll is higher, the material takes the new grade. If it is the same or lower, nothing changes, but the catalyst is still used up, so don't re-grade casually.[1]
This pack sets the median grade for a tier 1 catalyst to C, and each tier past 1 raises that median by one grade. The standard deviation is 1.5, the same as the mod default. Larger values make both high and low grades more common. The grader can't grade the individual materials inside a gear part, because that option is off in this pack.[7]
- material_grader.median_grade: C in this pack, for a tier 1 catalyst.[7]
- material_grader.standard_deviation: 1.5, which matches the mod default.[7]
- material_grader.can_grade_parts: false in this pack, so parts can't be graded.[7]
Making compounds (alloys)
Certain blocks craft compound material items, which the community often calls alloys. These are the metal alloyer, the recrystallizer and the refabricator. They are mid to late game blocks, so don't expect to build them right away. They combine up to four materials into one compound.[1]
- Place two or more unique, simple (not compound) materials into the input slots.[1]
- Check the result preview.[1]
- Toggle the Work button when you're happy with it.[1]
The game's own descriptions also mention a super mixer, which makes alloys of any material. A separate crude mixer makes crude alloys. This pack leaves the crude mixer's property multiplier at 0.8, the same as the mod default. That multiplier is applied to some numerical properties of the compounds it makes, so values below 1 reduce them.[5][7]
The pack also has an Alloy Forge with its own crafting recipe.[6]

Salvager
The salvager can break down some items into their components. In this pack, breaking down parts along with the gear is turned off. When you salvage a gear item you get its parts back, and you can optionally salvage those parts individually afterwards.[5][7]
Starlight Charger
The material charger gains charge when exposed to starlight. The Star Charged enchantment it applies to material items enhances their stats substantially. The charger's screen also shows a structure level and warns that it can take up to 30 seconds to update.[5]
Repairs and breaking
Repair kits repair gear in any crafting grid. You can fill a kit with materials ahead of time, or put the gear, the kit and the materials into the grid together. The material's tier must be the same as or higher than the gear's primary part. You can't repair gear by crafting two similar gear items together.[1][5]
This pack sets the repair efficiency with loose materials and no kit to 0, so a repair kit is required. Anvil repairs are 0.5 effective, which is the mod default. Gear does not break permanently, and you get a chat message when an item breaks.[7]
- item.repair_kits.efficiency.missing: 0. Any value above zero would make repair kits optional.[7]
- gear.repairs.anvil_effectiveness: 0.5. Setting it to 0 would disable anvil repairs.[7]
- gear.breaks_permanently: false in this pack.[7]
How do you progress through Silent Gear?
5 parts
Silent Gear progression in this pack follows the Silent Gear quest chapter. You start with blueprints and repairs, move on to grading and alloying materials, and finish by star-charging them. The later items split into three tiers, and every tier has a grader catalyst, a Starlight Charger catalyst and a pillar cap.[3]
The path through the quests
- Grab your blueprints. These quests sit after the Casts quest: Coating Blueprint, Binding Blueprint, Grip Blueprint, Lining Blueprint, Fletching Blueprint, Mace Blueprint and Elytra Blueprint.[3]
- Build the Salvager ("Salvager" quest). It breaks gear back down into its parts, so Diamond Boots give you 4 Diamonds back.[3]
- After the Salvager you unlock the Recrystallizer, which combines different crystals into new ones, and the Material Grader.[3]
- After the Material Grader comes the Alloy Forge, which makes custom alloys. It is the only way to get Tyrian Steel.[3]
- After the Alloy Forge comes the Starlight Charger, which gives materials the Star Charged enchantment.[3]

Repair Kits
The quest a quest in "Silent Gear" introduces repairs without an anvil. There are five kits: Very Crude Repair Kit, Crude Repair Kit, Sturdy Repair Kit, Crimson Repair Kit and Azure Repair Kit. Put a kit in a crafting grid with the repair materials to fill it. Then combine the filled kit with the tool in a crafting grid.[3]
Grading materials
Put an ingot in the Material Grader with a Grader Catalyst and it gets a grade. The better the grade, the better the material's stats, and the best grade is MAX. The catalysts are tiered in the quests.[3]
- Tier 1 uses Glowing Dust ("Tier 1 Grader Catalyst" quest).[3]
- Tier 2 uses Blazing Dust ("Tier 2 Grader Catalyst" quest).[3]
- Tier 3 uses Glittery Dust ("Tier 3 Grader Catalyst" quest).[3]

Star-charging with the Starlight Charger
The Starlight Charger needs a structure in view of the night sky. It sits in the middle of a 7x7 structure with a pillar in each corner, and each pillar needs a Starlight Charger Cap. It only gains Starlight Power at night, and it needs a charger catalyst per material.[3]

Pack changes that help you
The pack changes the casting recipes for the Azure Electrum, Crimson Steel and Tyrian Steel blocks, so each of those pillar cap blocks can be cast from its molten metal.[6]
The pack also adds several ways to make Azure Silver Dust, the Tier 2 catalyst. You can crush ingots or raw ore, or run ore, raw ore and raw blocks through enriching. Blaze Gold Dust, the Tier 1 catalyst, can be made by crushing Blaze Gold Ingots.[6]

How does Silent Gear work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, the recipes that link Silent Gear to other mods all revolve around Netherwood. The sources show no quest or recipe where another mod's item or machine feeds into Silent Gear's gear crafting itself. What the pack does is give Netherwood extra uses in other mods.[3][6]
Sawing Netherwood logs
The pack adds two sawing recipes that turn any log from the Silent Gear Netherwood log tag into Netherwood Planks. Both are pack additions, not mod defaults.[6]
The Mekanism version uses its sawing process and gives you Sawdust alongside the planks.[6]

BiblioCraft Netherwood furniture
BiblioCraft's wood-variant recipes include Silent Gear Netherwood versions, and the pack changes them. They cover display cases, seats and several seat-back styles in many wool colors, including black, blue, brown, cyan, gray, green, light blue, light gray and lime. Each one uses Silent Gear's Netherwood Slab, so Netherwood is your way into this furniture.[6]
Here is the black Netherwood seat as an example. The other colors follow the same pattern with their own wool.[6]

Quests
The Silent Gear quest chapter (repair kits, Salvager, Material Grader, Alloy Forge and Starlight Charger) only asks you to obtain Silent Gear items. The Flax String quest in Food and Farming is the same, so the quest book does not tie the mod to any other mod.[3][4]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Silent Gear?
5 parts
Silent Gear has its own quest chapter, and two more of its items show up in the Food and Farming chapter. Here is how they fit together and what each quest asks you to hand in.[3][4]
The Silent Gear chapter
The chapter starts with a repair quest. a quest in "Silent Gear" accepts any one of the Very Crude Repair Kit, Crude Repair Kit, Sturdy Repair Kit, Crimson Repair Kit or Azure Repair Kit. Its text explains that you put the kit in a crafting grid with the repair materials to fill it. Then you combine the filled kit with the tool in a crafting grid. The sources list no prerequisite for this quest.[3]
Most of the rest hangs off a quest called Casts. The sources don't describe that quest, so I can't say what it asks for. These quests unlock after it:[3]
- a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Coating Blueprint. The quest says it coats items and tools, and that Netherite makes a great coating material.[3]
- a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Lining Blueprint.[3]
- a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Binding Blueprint.[3]
- a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Fletching Blueprint.[3]
- a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Mace Blueprint.[3]
- a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Elytra Blueprint.[3]
- a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Grip Blueprint.[3]
- "Salvager" quest asks for the Salvager. It breaks gear down into the items it was made from, and the quest gives Diamond Boots returning 4 Diamonds as an example.[3]
After the Salvager
Two quests unlock once you finish the Salvager quest. a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Recrystallizer, which combines different crystals into new ones for weapons, tools and armor. a quest in "Silent Gear" asks for the Material Grader. You put an ingot in it along with a Grader Catalyst to give the material a grade. The better the grade, the better the stats, and the best grade is MAX.[3]
Grader catalysts and the Alloy Forge
The Material Grader quest opens four more quests. Three of them cover the grader catalyst tiers:[3]
- "Tier 1 Grader Catalyst" quest asks for Glowing Dust.[3]
- "Tier 2 Grader Catalyst" quest asks for Blazing Dust.[3]
- "Tier 3 Grader Catalyst" quest asks for Glittery Dust.[3]
The fourth, a quest in "Silent Gear", asks for the Alloy Forge. The quest says it makes custom alloys and is the only way to get Tyrian Steel.[3]
Starlight Charger
The Alloy Forge quest leads to "Starlight Charger" quest, which asks for the Starlight Charger. It can "enchant" materials with the "Star Charged" enchantment. You build it in the middle of a 7x7 structure that has a pillar in each corner and can see the night sky. Each pillar needs a Starlight Charger Cap, and each material needs a charger catalyst. The charger only gains Starlight Power at night.[3]
Six quests follow it, split into pillar caps and catalysts:[3]
- "Tier 1 Starlight Charger Pillar Cap" quest is the Tier 1 cap and asks for a Block of Crimson Steel.[3]
- "Tier 2 Starlight Charger Pillar Cap" quest is the Tier 2 cap and asks for a Block of Azure Electrum.[3]
- "Tier 3 Starlight Charger Pillar Cap" quest is the Tier 3 cap and asks for a Block of Tyrian Steel.[3]
- "Tier 1 Starlight Charger Catalyst" quest is the Tier 1 catalyst and asks for Blaze Gold Dust.[3]
- "Tier 2 Starlight Charger Catalyst" quest is the Tier 2 catalyst and asks for Azure Silver Dust.[3]
- "Tier 3 Starlight Charger Catalyst" quest is the Tier 3 catalyst and asks for Starmetal Dust.[3]
Flax in Food and Farming
Two Silent Gear items are in the Food and Farming chapter. a quest in "Food and Farming" asks for Flax Seeds and unlocks after the Punch the Grass quest. The quest says you can find the seeds growing in fields of grass, and that flax helps if you need a lot of String early on. "Flax String" quest follows it and asks for Flax String, which the quest says can replace normal String.[4]
Which Silent Gear config options matter?
7 parts
Silent Gear has a common config and a server config in this pack, and they cover mostly the same options. Here are the ones you're most likely to care about, and what the pack sets them to.[7][8]
Did the pack change anything?
Everywhere the common file lists a mod default, the pack's value matches it. That includes gear.prospector_hammer.range at 16, gear.saw.recursion_depth at 200 and gear.repairs.anvil_effectiveness at 0.5. The server file shows a different starlight charger charge rate, covered below.[7][8]
Starlight charger
In the common file, starlight_charger.charge_rate is 100 (the mod default), starlight_charger.max_charge is 1,000,000 and starlight_charger.work_time is NIGHTTIME. starlight_charger.requires_view_of_sky is true, so the charger needs a clear view of the sky above it. starlight_charger.can_charge_parts is false.[7]
The server file lists its own charge rate, starlightCharger.chargeRate, as 50, and its starlightCharger.maxCharge as 1,000,000.[8]
Breaking and repairing gear
- gear.breaks_permanently is false, so gear doesn't break permanently the way vanilla tools and armor do. gear.send_broken_message is true, so you get a chat message when something breaks, with a hint that it can be repaired.[7]
- gear.repairs.anvil_effectiveness is 0.5. Setting it to 0 would disable anvil repairs.[7]
- item.repair_kits.efficiency.missing is 0, so repair kits are not optional. Any value above zero would make them optional by allowing repairs with loose materials.[7]
- item.repair_kits.capacity.very_crude is 8.[7]
- item.repair_kits.capacity.crude is 16.[7]
- item.repair_kits.capacity.sturdy is 32.[7]
- item.repair_kits.capacity.crimson is 48.[7]
- item.repair_kits.capacity.azure is 64, and item.repair_kits.efficiency.azure is 0.5.[7]
Enchanting and conversion
gear.enchanting.allow_enchanting is true, so you can enchant gear by normal means, and gear.enchanting.force_remove_enchantments is false, so enchantments aren't stripped. gear.allow_conversion_recipes is also true, so you can, for example, put a vanilla stone pickaxe in a crafting grid to get a Silent Gear stone pickaxe.[7]
Starting out
item.blueprint.spawn_with_starter_blueprints and item.material_book.spawn_with_material_book are both false, so you don't get a blueprint package or a material book when you join a new world. item.blueprint.types_allowed is BOTH, so blueprints and templates are both allowed.[7]
Material grader and salvager
The material grader's material_grader.median_grade is C with a tier 1 catalyst, and each catalyst tier past 1 raises it by one grade. material_grader.standard_deviation is 1.5, and material_grader.can_grade_parts is false.[7]
The salvager's part loss runs from 0 (salvager.part_loss_rate.min) to 0.5 (salvager.part_loss_rate.max), depending on remaining durability. salvager.break_down_parts_with_gear is false, so parts come back as parts and you can salvage them individually.[7]
