What is Silent Gear?

1 part

Silent Gear is all about gear: tools, weapons and armor that you build from parts and customize with different materials. This pack ships Silent Gear 4.0.25, so it's a good mod to learn early if you want gear that fits how you play.[1][2]

The mod covers a lot of ground. Tools include pickaxes, paxels, hammers (area pickaxes), excavators (area shovels) and a saw that fells whole trees. Weapons include swords, daggers, bows, crossbows and more, and there is armor and an elytra too. You can build with vanilla materials like wood, iron, diamond and netherite, plus Silent Gear's own crimson steel, azure electrum and tyrian steel.[1]

Crafting works from blueprints, which you can reuse forever, or templates, which are used up once. Every gear item needs a main part, and tools and weapons also need a rod. You craft the main part first, then combine it with a rod. Almost every recipe is shapeless and works in a normal crafting grid.[1]

Tip: If you're unsure about a Silent Gear recipe, check JEI. The mod's own description tells you to do the same.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Silent Gear quest chapter. It starts with repair kits and blueprints, then moves into processing machines and the mod's special metals. The quest titles are blank, so the list below goes by what each quest asks you to obtain.[3]

The material grader gives your materials a grade from E up to MAX. Each grading attempt uses a catalyst, and higher-tier catalysts tend to give better grades. By default, glowing dust is tier 1, blazing dust is tier 2 and glittery dust is tier 3. That's why the quest chapter asks for all three.[1][3]

Silent Gear's flax also shows up in the farming quests. The food and farming chapter has quests for Flax Seeds (a quest in "?") and Flax String (a quest in "?").[4]

Unverified The mod's public description mentions Forge, but this pack uses a NeoForge 1.21.1 build of Silent Gear. Treat details like exact stats, repair kit values and any pack-specific changes as unconfirmed until you check them in-game or in JEI. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Silent Gear?

4 parts

Silent Gear builds every tool, weapon and armor piece out of parts, so your first job is getting the right blueprints. A blueprint can be reused forever, while a template is used up after one craft. Every gear item needs a main part, and tools and weapons also need a rod. Some need a cord as well. A plain stick works fine as a rod when you start out.[1]

Step 1: Make a blueprint or template

Start with something simple like the axe. The Axe Blueprint is the permanent version and the Axe Template is the one-use version. The recipe dump lists both as the mod's own recipes. If you go the template route, you'll need template boards, which the mod's advancements say you craft from a log using a knife or dagger. A crude knife is also what you use on your stone anvil.[1][5][6]

Step 2: Get a repair kit

Gear breaks, so make a repair kit early. The Very Crude Repair Kit, Crude Repair Kit and Sturdy Repair Kit all have their own recipes below. You fill a kit by crafting it with materials, and you empty it by crafting it with a stick. Craft a filled kit with a gear item to repair it. The pack's quest chapter accepts any kit, from the very crude one up to the azure one, for a quest in "?".[3][5][6]

Step 3: Build the Material Grader

In the Silent Gear quest chapter, the Salvager quest (a quest in "?") leads on to the Material Grader quest (a quest in "?"). The Salvager can break some items down into their components. The Material Grader improves your materials. Craft the Advanced Upgrade Base first, since the grader's recipe uses it.[3][5][6]

Crafting the grader also earns you a tier 1 catalyst, which is Glowing Dust. Better catalysts follow: Blazing Dust is tier 2 and Glittery Dust is tier 3. The quest chapter has a quest for each of the three dusts after the grader.[3][6]

Step 4: Alloy Forge and Starlight Charger

Once the grader is done, the chapter moves on to the Alloy Forge (a quest in "?") and then the Starlight Charger (a quest in "?"). The charger applies the Star Charged enchantment to material items, which enhances their stats substantially. Several of the later metal and dust quests unlock after it.[3][6]

How does Silent Gear work?

9 parts

Silent Gear focuses on tools, weapons and armor, which the mod calls gear. So the core mechanics are about crafting, grading, repairing and upgrading gear. Here is how those systems work in this pack, as far as the sources explain them.[1]

Crafting gear: blueprints, templates and parts

Every gear item needs a main part. Tools and weapons also need a rod, and some need a cord. Blueprints and templates are what you use to make those parts. A blueprint can be reused forever, while a template is used up after one craft. Otherwise they are identical.[1][6]

  1. Combine the blueprint or template for the tool with the right number of materials to make the main part, such as a tool head or blade. In a normal crafting grid the materials must all be the same, though grades and other modifiers can differ.[1][6]
  2. Craft the main part with a rod. You can make a rod with a rod blueprint, or just use a plain stick.[1]
  3. For bows, crossbows and fishing rods, add the cord and the rod at the same time.[1]

Most tools also have a quick recipe that skips the separate steps. When you use a blueprint or template in the crafting station, you can mix materials. Check the blueprint tooltip for the details of the final item.[1][6]

Armor works differently and has no quick recipe. You craft plates first, then craft the plates into armor, optionally adding a lining. Elytra need wings plus a binding. The wings only accept materials in the cloth and sheet categories. Curios such as rings and bracelets need jeweler's tools on top of the blueprint step, and their main part only accepts metal materials.[1]

In this pack the allowed blueprint type is set to both blueprints and templates, and new players do not get a starter blueprint package.[7]

Placing most vanilla items into a crafting grid by themselves converts them to the Silent Gear equivalent. The pack leaves gear.allow_conversion_recipes on. Parts swapped out of a gear item are returned to you, since gear.upgrades.destroy_swapped_parts is off.[1][7]

The material grader and catalysts

Grades are modifiers that multiply some, but not all, material stats. From lowest to highest they are E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, SSS and MAX. You grade materials in the material grader, which uses up one catalyst per attempt and assigns the grade randomly from a normal distribution.[1]

  • Tier 1 catalyst: glowing dust. Crafting the grader also gives you one.[1][6]
  • Tier 2 catalyst: blazing dust.[1][6]
  • Tier 3 catalyst: glittery dust.[1][6]

In this pack a tier 1 catalyst gives a median grade of C, and each tier above 1 raises the median by one grade, so tier 2 centers on B. The standard deviation is 1.5, which matches the mod default. A larger value makes both high and low grades more common.[7]

Tip: You can put an already graded material back into the grader. It only takes the new grade if the roll is higher. If the roll is the same or lower, nothing changes but the catalyst is still consumed, so save re-grading for materials you really care about.[1]

Alloys and compound materials

Compound materials, often called alloys, come from the metal alloyer, recrystallizer and refabricator. These are mid to late game blocks. They combine up to four materials into one compound. Put two or more different simple (non-compound) materials into the input slots, then toggle the Work button once the result preview looks right. The mod also has a super mixer block that makes alloys of any material.[1][6]

Starlight Charger

The Starlight Charger gains charge when exposed to starlight, and its structure level can take up to 30 seconds to update. It applies the Star Charged enchantment to material items, which enhances their stats substantially. In this pack its charge rate is 100 and it stores up to 1,000,000 energy. Both match the mod defaults.[6][7]

Salvaging old gear

The salvager can break some items down into their components. How many parts you lose depends on the item's remaining durability. In this pack the loss rate runs from 0 (no loss) up to 0.5, both the mod defaults.[6][7]

Breaking and repairing

You cannot repair gear by crafting two similar gear items together. Repair kits let you repair in any crafting grid. You can fill a kit with materials ahead of time, or put the gear, the kit and the materials into the grid together. The material's tier must be the same or higher than the gear's primary part. To empty a kit, craft it with a stick.[1][6]

In this pack the Azure Repair Kit holds 64 and the crimson kit holds 48, the same as the mod defaults. Loose-material repair efficiency without a kit is 0, which means kits are needed. Anvil repairs work at an effectiveness of 0.5.[7]

Gear does not break permanently here, because gear.breaks_permanently is off. A tool that runs out of durability becomes a broken item that you can repair, and the game shows a chat message to tell you so. Only gear with the red card upgrade breaks for good, like vanilla gear.[6][7]

Area tools, saws and the prospector

  • Hammers mine stone and ores in a 3x3 area, and by default only break ores when you aim at an ore. Excavators mine soil in a 3x3 area. The pack uses STRICT matching for ores and MODERATE for most other blocks.[6][7]
  • The wide plate upgrade adds 1 to the effect radius of hammers and excavators, and it does not stack. The road maker upgrade lets excavators make grass paths in 3x3 patches.[6]
  • The saw fells a whole tree from a single block, but the logs and leaves must be correctly tagged to count as a tree. Its search depth is capped at 200 in this pack.[6][7]
  • The prospector hammer searches a small area in the direction you right-click, mostly for ores. Its range here is 16 blocks.[6][7]

Upgrades and enchanting

Tip upgrades can be crafted onto an existing tool or weapon. Most add or subtract a fixed amount from certain stats, and some use multipliers instead. In this pack upgrade parts can be applied outside an anvil, since gear.upgrades.apply_in_anvil_only is off. Normal enchanting of gear is allowed, and enchantments are not forcibly stripped.[6][7]

The vanilla tool nerf option is switched off, so the reduced durability and speed settings for vanilla tools are not in effect.[7]

Pack-specific recipes

The pack adds a few Silent Gear related recipes on top of the mod's own. A hammer from the ore hammers tag plus an ingot gives you the dust of blaze gold, azure electrum, azure silver, crimson iron, crimson steel or tyrian steel. The pack also lets you craft Azure Silver and Crimson Iron ingots from the matching Mystical Agriculture essence.[5]

How do you progress through Silent Gear?

5 parts

Silent Gear's progression in this pack runs mostly through one quest chapter. It starts with repair kits and blueprints, moves through a few machines, and finishes with the mod's alloy metals. The quests have no titles, so I point to them by their items and IDs.[3]

Step 1: repair kits and blueprints

The chapter's repair kit quest a quest in "?" accepts any one of five kits: Very Crude Repair Kit, Crude Repair Kit, Sturdy Repair Kit, Crimson Repair Kit or Azure Repair Kit. Handing in any one of them completes it.[3]

The metal blocks can also be cast from the matching molten metal using Productive Metalworks block casting. That recipe covers azure electrum, crimson steel and tyrian steel, and it is a mod recipe, not a pack change.[5]

What the pack changes

The pack adds many extra routes to azure silver dust. Raw azure silver can be crushed in an Actually Additions crusher. Mekanism crushing and enriching handle ingots, ores, raw ore, raw blocks and dirty dust. EnderIO SAG milling handles ingots and raw material, and an ore hammer works on ingots. Blaze gold ingots can also be turned into dust with Mekanism crushing, a SAG mill or an ore hammer.[5]

The pack also adds crafting recipes that turn Mystical Agriculture azure silver essence into Azure Silver Ingot and crimson iron essence into Crimson Iron Ingot. Ore hammer recipes added by the pack turn azure electrum, crimson iron, crimson steel and tyrian steel ingots into their dusts.[5]

Flax and string

The food and farming chapter has two Silent Gear quests: Flax Seeds a quest in "?", followed by Flax String a quest in "?". The pack also adds a Farming for Blockheads market entry for flax seeds. You make flax string from Flax Fiber.[4][5]

How does Silent Gear work with other mods?

3 parts

Silent Gear mostly stands on its own in this pack, but its Netherwood wood is wired into a few other mods through recipes. The recipe list shows two sawing recipes and a large set of BiblioCraft furniture recipes. The tasks in the Silent Gear quest chapter are all Silent Gear items, so no quest there asks for items from two mods at once.[3][5]

Sawing Netherwood

The pack adds its own sawing recipes so Netherwood logs work with two other wood-processing mods. Both turn any log in the Silent Gear Netherwood log tag into Netherwood Planks. The Mekanism version also gives you Sawdust as a second output.[5]

BiblioCraft's BiblioWoods recipes include a Silent Gear Netherwood variant of its furniture, and Netherwood Slab is the wood part of these recipes. These are the mod's own recipes, not changes made by the pack. Each dye colour gets its own set of pieces.[5]

Black, for example, has a display case, a seat, and small, flat, raised, tall and fancy seat backs. Try Black Netherwood Display Case and Black Netherwood Seat. The other colours in the recipe list, such as blue, brown, cyan, gray, green, light blue, light gray and lime, use the same naming.[5]

Flax in the farming chapter

Two Silent Gear items sit in the food and farming quest chapter rather than the Silent Gear one: Flax Seeds with a quest in "?", and Flax String with a quest in "?". The string quest comes after the seeds quest.[4]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Silent Gear?

4 parts

Silent Gear shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: its own "silent_gear" chapter and a couple of quests in "food_and_farming". All of these quests are untitled in the pack files, so they're referenced by ID below. They ask you to obtain an item, and the listed order comes from each quest's prerequisite.[3][4]

The silent_gear chapter

The chapter has one quest with no prerequisite listed, a quest in "?". It accepts any one repair kit: Very Crude Repair Kit, Crude Repair Kit, Sturdy Repair Kit, Crimson Repair Kit or Azure Repair Kit.[3]

Most of the rest of the chapter hangs off a single earlier quest that isn't part of the list I was given. These quests all unlock after it, and you can do them in any order:[3]

After the Salvager

Two quests unlock once you finish the Salvager quest. a quest in "?" asks for the Recrystallizer, and a quest in "?" asks for the Material Grader.[3]

The Material Grader quest opens four more. a quest in "?" wants Blazing Dust, a quest in "?" wants Glowing Dust, a quest in "?" wants Glittery Dust, and a quest in "?" wants the Alloy Forge.[3]

The Alloy Forge branch

The Alloy Forge quest unlocks a quest in "?", which asks for the Starlight Charger. That quest is the gateway to the last group in the chapter. All of these unlock after it:[3]

Flax in food_and_farming

Silent Gear also appears in the "food_and_farming" chapter. a quest in "?" asks for Flax Seeds, and it unlocks after a quest outside the list I was given. Finishing it unlocks a quest in "?", which asks for Flax String.[4]

Unverified The quest files I was given don't include quest descriptions or rewards, so what each quest hands out on completion is unconfirmed here.

Which Silent Gear config options matter?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Silent Gear has a common config and a server config in this pack, and they cover mostly the same options. Here are the ones you're most likely to care about, and what the pack sets them to.[8][9]

Did the pack change anything?

Everywhere the common file lists a mod default, the pack's value matches it. That includes gear.prospector_hammer.range at 16, gear.saw.recursion_depth at 200 and gear.repairs.anvil_effectiveness at 0.5. The server file shows a different starlight charger charge rate, covered below.[8][9]

Starlight charger

In the common file, starlight_charger.charge_rate is 100 (the mod default), starlight_charger.max_charge is 1,000,000 and starlight_charger.work_time is NIGHTTIME. starlight_charger.requires_view_of_sky is true, so the charger needs a clear view of the sky above it. starlight_charger.can_charge_parts is false.[8]

The server file lists its own charge rate, starlightCharger.chargeRate, as 50, and its starlightCharger.maxCharge as 1,000,000.[9]

Breaking and repairing gear

Enchanting and conversion

gear.enchanting.allow_enchanting is true, so you can enchant gear by normal means, and gear.enchanting.force_remove_enchantments is false, so enchantments aren't stripped. gear.allow_conversion_recipes is also true, so you can, for example, put a vanilla stone pickaxe in a crafting grid to get a Silent Gear stone pickaxe.[8]

Starting out

item.blueprint.spawn_with_starter_blueprints and item.material_book.spawn_with_material_book are both false, so you don't get a blueprint package or a material book when you join a new world. item.blueprint.types_allowed is BOTH, so blueprints and templates are both allowed.[8]

Material grader and salvager

The material grader's material_grader.median_grade is C with a tier 1 catalyst, and each catalyst tier past 1 raises it by one grade. material_grader.standard_deviation is 1.5, and material_grader.can_grade_parts is false.[8]

The salvager's part loss runs from 0 (salvager.part_loss_rate.min) to 0.5 (salvager.part_loss_rate.max), depending on remaining durability. salvager.break_down_parts_with_gear is false, so parts come back as parts and you can salvage them individually.[8]

Nerfed vanilla tools

Tip: nerfed_items.enabled is false, so vanilla tools aren't nerfed in this pack and the other settings in that group are ignored. If it were turned on, nerfed_items.durability_multiplier would multiply durability by 0.05 and nerfed_items.harvest_speed_multiplier would multiply harvest speed by 0.5.[8]

What changed in Silent Gear between versions?
