What is Silent Gear?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Silent Gear is all about tools, weapons and armor, which the mod calls "gear". Instead of grabbing a fixed iron pickaxe, you build each piece from parts and materials, so you decide what it is made of and how it performs. This pack includes Silent Gear 4.2.3, and the mod needs Silent Lib to run.[1][2]

It is a great fit if you like tinkering with your equipment and chasing better stats. Materials can come from vanilla (wood, stone, iron, diamond, netherite and more), from Silent Gear's own metals like crimson steel, azure electrum and tyrian steel, and from common modded metals such as tin, silver and lead. Silent Gear does not add the items needed to use those modded metals.[1]

What you can build

  • Tools: pickaxes, shovels, axes, paxels, hoes, mattocks, sickles, prospector hammers that search for ores, hammers (area-of-effect pickaxes), excavators (area-of-effect shovels) and a saw that cuts down whole trees.[1]
  • Weapons: swords, tridents, machetes, katana, daggers, knives, bows, crossbows and slingshots.[1]
  • Armor, elytra and curios such as rings and bracelets.[1]

How it works at a glance

Every gear item needs a main part, and tools and weapons also need a rod. Blueprints and templates are essential for crafting gear. A blueprint is reusable forever, while a template is used up after one craft. Almost all recipes are shapeless and work in a normal crafting grid, and the mod recommends checking JEI if you are unsure about a recipe.[1]

You can also improve your materials. The material grader rolls a grade from E up to MAX and consumes one catalyst per attempt. Better catalysts give better average grades. Later on, the metal alloyer, recrystallizer and refabricator can combine up to four materials into one compound. The mod describes these blocks as mid to late game.[1]

Tip: Repair works differently from vanilla: you cannot repair gear by crafting two similar items together. Use repair kits or an anvil instead.[1]

Unverified The sources I have do not show where Silent Gear fits in this pack's progression, and they show no quests or ATM Star path involvement for it. The pack's own recipe and config changes for this mod are also unconfirmed, so check JEI in your world for the real recipes. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Silent Gear?

5 parts

Silent Gear replaces the usual tool and armor crafting with a part-based system, so your first few items are about getting set up for it. Here's the order I'd go in, and why.[1]

Step one: make a Crude Knife

Start with the Crude Knife. Silent Gear's own advancement text says it's the knife you use on your stone anvil, and you need some kind of knife or dagger for the next step.[3][4]

Step two: cut template boards

Template boards are crafted from a log and a knife or dagger. You'll use them a lot, because the templates, the blueprint book and the crude repair kit in this pack all call for them.[3][4]

Step three: blueprint paper, then blueprints or templates

Blueprints and templates are essential for crafting any gear item. A blueprint can be reused forever, while a template is consumed after one use. They're otherwise identical.[1]

Blueprints are made with Blueprint Paper, so craft that first if you want the reusable kind.[3]

Then turn it into a tool

Combine the blueprint or template with materials to make the main part, such as the tool head. The materials must all be the same type, though they can have different grades. Then craft the main part with a rod. A plain stick works if you have nothing better. Most tools also have a quick recipe that skips the separate steps.[1]

Last, keep a repair kit handy

The Crude Repair Kit is used to repair gear items. Craft it with materials to fill it, then craft it with a gear item to repair that item. Craft it with a stick to empty it again.[3][4]

Tip: If you're unsure about any Silent Gear recipe, check JEI. With the default controls you can press U over a blueprint to see its recipes.[1][4]

How does Silent Gear work?

5 parts

Silent Gear is a gear mod, so its "machines" are a handful of crafting-style blocks that build, improve, repair and break down tools, weapons and armor. This section covers how those systems work in this pack. Silent Gear has no power or fluid system that I can confirm from the sources, so I've kept to what they actually show.[1][4]

Blueprints, templates and parts

Every gear item starts with a blueprint or a template. A blueprint can be reused infinitely, while a template is consumed with each use. They are otherwise identical. You use them to craft the main part (tool head, blade, armor plates and so on) from some number of materials.[1][4]

In a plain crafting grid, the materials for a main part must all be the same type, although they can have different grades. In the crafting station you can mix materials. After that, tools and melee weapons get a rod, and a plain stick works if you have nothing better. Bows, crossbows and fishing rods also need a cord, added at the same time as the rod.[1][4]

Armor only needs plates, with an optional lining, and has no quick recipe. Elytra need wings plus a binding. Curios such as rings and bracelets need jeweler's tools: you make the main part from metal materials, craft an adornment, then combine the parts.[1]

Most vanilla tools and armor can be converted into the Silent Gear version by putting them alone in a crafting grid. This pack leaves conversion recipes on with gear.allowConversionRecipes. It also allows both blueprints and templates via item.blueprint.typesAllowed, and does not hand out starter blueprints on a new world (item.blueprint.spawnWithStarterBlueprints is false).[1][5]

Blueprints are made from Blueprint Paper, and templates from template boards:[3]

Material grader

The material grader gives a material a random grade. Grades run E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, SSS and MAX, from lowest to highest, and each applies an extra multiplier to some stats. Every grading attempt consumes one catalyst.[1]

Catalyst tier decides how good your average result is. Five tiers exist, but only three have items by default: glowing dust (tier 1), Blazing Dust (tier 2) and glittery dust (tier 3).[1][3]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any blaze gold dust
  • any glowstone dust
  • any glowstone dust

Recipe id: silentgear:blazing_dust

In this pack, materialGrader.median_grade is C. A tier 1 catalyst most often gives a C, and each tier above that raises the median by one grade (tier 2 centers on B). Grades follow a bell curve with a standard deviation of 1.5 (materialGrader.standardDeviation), so results a little above or below the median are common.[5]

Tip: You can put an already graded material back into the grader. A higher roll replaces the old grade, but a same or lower roll changes nothing, and the catalyst is still used up.[1]

Compounds, charging and salvaging

Compound materials (the community calls them alloys) come from the metal alloyer, recrystallizer and refabricator. They are mid to late game blocks. You place two or more unique, simple (not compound) materials in the input slots, check the result preview, and toggle the Work button. A compound can combine up to four materials.[1]

At this version, the Starlight Charger's charge meter gains charge when exposed to starlight. Its result is the star charged enchantment, which enhances material stats substantially and is applied to material items by the charger.[4]

At this version, the salvager breaks some items down into their components. You don't get everything back: the part loss rate depends on remaining durability. In this pack it ranges from 0 (salvager.partLossRate.min) up to 0.5 (salvager.partLossRate.max), where 0 means no loss and 1 means total loss.[4][5]

Repairing and breaking

You can't repair gear by crafting two similar items together. Repair kits are the quick method. You fill a kit by crafting it with materials, or empty it with a stick, and you repair a gear item by crafting it with a filled kit. The material's tier must be the same or higher than the gear's primary part.[1][4]

The pack sets item.repairKits.efficiency.missing to 0, so loose materials without a kit do not repair anything. Anvil repairs are on at an effectiveness of 0.5 (gear.repairs.anvilEffectiveness). One example kit is the Azure Repair Kit:[3][5]

Gear does not break permanently here (gear.breaksPermanently is false). A worn-out item becomes a "broken" item you can still repair, and the pack shows a chat message about it. The red card upgrade lets an item break permanently like vanilla gear. Gear also recalculates its stats as it takes damage, and the pack sets 10 recalculation levels (gear.damageFactorLevels).[4][5]

Area tools and special behavior

  • At this version, hammers mine stone and ores in a 3x3 area, and excavators mine soil in a 3x3 area. By default, ores only break when you aim at an ore. The pack uses STRICT matching for ores and MODERATE for other blocks.[4][5]
  • At this version, the wide plate upgrade adds 1 to the radius of hammers and excavators, and it doesn't stack.[4]
  • At this version, the saw fells a whole tree by breaking one block, as long as the logs and leaves are correctly tagged. The pack caps its search depth at 200 (gear.saw.recursionDepth).[4][5]
  • At this version, the prospector hammer searches a small area when you right-click a block, and the pack sets its range to 16 blocks (gear.prospector_hammer.range).[4][5]
  • At this version, sickles break plants in a small area. Right-clicking harvests crops and replants them, but destroys the seeds.[4]

How do you progress through Silent Gear?

5 parts

Silent Gear in this pack has a clear material ladder, and the in-pack recipes show it. There are three repair kit levels, Crude, Crimson and Azure, and each one needs a metal from further along the chain. Here is the order I'd follow.[3]

Step 1: Crude gear

You start with Crude Tool Parts, which lead into the Crude Hammer and Crude Knife. The Crude Repair Kit is the entry-level way to keep gear going.[3]

Step 2: Blueprints and templates

Silent Gear has separate blueprint and template recipes for each gear type and part: axe, bow, crossbow, dagger, excavator, fishing rod, arrow, fletching, binding, cord, coating, bracelet, boots, chestplate and elytra. The Blueprint Paper recipe is the starting point for the blueprint side, and the Blueprint Book has its own recipe too.[3]

Tip: Ingots, nuggets and blocks of Crimson Iron, Crimson Steel, Blaze Gold, Azure Silver and Azure Electrum all convert back and forth, so you can compress them into blocks for storage.[3]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Silent Gear, so there is no quest-guided path. The recipe data also doesn't show how raw Crimson Iron or Azure Silver are obtained, or the numeric tier levels and stats of each material. Check those in-game before relying on them.

How does Silent Gear work with other mods?

3 parts

The connections between Silent Gear and other mods in this pack all come from recipes, and all of them involve Netherwood, the Silent Gear wood. Netherwood logs plug into the sawing and cutting machines from three other mods, so you can process them the same way you'd process normal logs.[3]

Mekanism sawing

The pack adds a Mekanism sawing recipe for Netherwood. Feed it any log from the Silent Gear Netherwood log tag and you get Netherwood Planks plus Sawdust as a byproduct.[3]

Productive Trees sawmill

The pack also adds a Productive Trees sawmill recipe that turns Netherwood logs into Netherwood Planks. This one involves Sawdust, so check the recipe below for the exact inputs.[3]

Farmer's Delight cutting

This one is a Farmer's Delight integration recipe rather than something the pack added. Cutting a Netherwood on a cutting board gives you a Stripped Netherwood Log and some Tree Bark.[3]

Cutting (farmersdelight)

Tip: Two different machines can turn Netherwood logs into planks here, one from Mekanism and one from Productive Trees. Use whichever one you already have set up.[3]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Silent Gear, and no other cross-mod recipes were found in the sources, so any further integrations are unconfirmed.

Which Silent Gear config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 1.25 guide

Silent Gear's settings live in gear.breaksPermanently's file, config/silentgear-server.toml. Everything below is what this pack sets. The pack file only shows the current values, so it doesn't tell us which ones differ from the mod's own defaults.[6]

Breaking and durability

  • gear.breaksPermanently is false, so gear does not break permanently the way vanilla tools and armor do. gear.sendBrokenMessage is true, so you get a chat message when an item breaks, with a hint that it can be repaired.[6]
  • nerfedItems.enabled is false. That means the whole vanilla-tool nerf group is ignored, including its durability multiplier of 0.05, its harvest speed multiplier of 0.5 and the list of wooden to diamond axes, hoes, pickaxes, shovels and swords.[6]
  • gear.damageFactorLevels is 10. It controls how often gear recalculates its stats as it takes damage.[6]

Repairs

Anvil repairs run at an effectiveness of 0.5 via gear.repairs.anvilEffectiveness. gear.repairs.quickEffectiveness is set to 0.35, but the config marks it as deprecated in favor of the repair kit settings.[6]

item.repairKits.efficiency.missing is 0. Repairing with loose materials and no repair kit is therefore not allowed here; the config notes that any value above zero would make kits optional.[6]

Repair kit capacity grows with the kit tier:[6]

Efficiency follows the same order. The azure kit is the best at 0.5 (item.repairKits.efficiency.azure), and the lower tiers step down from there through item.repairKits.efficiency.crimson, item.repairKits.efficiency.sturdy and item.repairKits.efficiency.crude to item.repairKits.efficiency.very_crude.[6]

Unverified Which of these values the pack changed from Silent Gear's own defaults is unverified, because the sources only show the pack's current values.

What changed in Silent Gear between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 0.66 ships Silent Gear 4.0.3. The mod was first included in 0.64 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs for 4.0.2 and 4.0.3.[7][8][9]

4.0.3 (the version in this pack)

  • New sounds replace the "gear item damage factor change" (kachink) sound, and the config option for it was removed. A resource pack can change or remove the new sounds.[7]
  • Crimson iron and azure silver ores now generate correctly.[7]
  • Fixed blocks sometimes failing to be broken.[7]
  • Fixed a crash when feeding a material grader from the side with a hopper.[7]
  • Fixed a crash when looking at sheet metal with no material.[7]
  • Fixed being able to combine two gear items into an invalid item in the crafting grid.[7]

4.0.2

Since the pack ships 4.0.3, it includes everything from 4.0.2 too. This release added the Crude Knife and Crude Hammer, which are very cheap to craft and work with stone anvil recipes. It also added advancements for the stone anvil and crude knife.[8][9]

The Super Mixer was added as well. It can make alloys from anything, but the 4.0.2 changelog describes it as a work in progress with no recipe yet. The changelog says it effectively replaces the "legacy mixing" option if you were to add an extremely cheap recipe for it.[8]

The default loot table for the blueprint package changed. It now gives blueprints for the rod, pickaxe, shovel, axe, hoe and sword.[8]

Fixes in 4.0.2 covered wielder effect traits like Flame Ward not working correctly, and saws crashing the game when used. They also covered boots and leggings conversion recipes producing invalid items, and gear items with invalid parts crashing the game.[8]

Unverified Whether the Super Mixer has a recipe in this pack is not confirmed by the sources I have. The 4.0.2 changelog only says it had no recipe at that time.
