What is Immersive Engineering?
2 parts
Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired, retro-futuristic industry. You won't find glowing tubes and magic boxes here. You get real hanging power lines and huge moving multiblocks, like a 5x3x3 Crusher with rotating wheels that grind your ore and a massive 3x7x8 Excavator that digs ores out of the ground with a giant bucketwheel.[1]
Power uses the Forge Energy API, so it works with just about every other tech mod, but IE can also be played completely standalone. Instead of lines of cable blocks, you string wires between connectors. You can generate power with waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. For in-game help, the mod comes with its own documentation book, the Engineer's Manual.[1]
If you love building big machines and like a brown-and-grey industrial look, this is the mod for you. Everything starts with the Engineer's Hammer, which makes plates and dust and forms your multiblocks. You'll be building a lot of those![2]
All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194. The mod has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[3]
Where it fits in the pack
The pack has its own Immersive Engineering quest chapter. It opens with "Immersive Engineering" quest, which just asks for the Engineer's Hammer, and then branches into a few paths.[2]
- Early multiblocks: the "Coke Oven" quest makes Coal Coke and Creosote Oil, the "Alloy Kiln" quest makes alloys, and the "Crude Blast Furnace" quest gives you your first Steel.[2]
- Power: "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest starts with the Engineer's Wire Cutters, which you use to turn plates into wires for your coils.[2]
- Logistics: "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest starts with the Engineer's Screwdriver, then moves on to conveyors, pipes, barrels and crates.[2]
The ATM Star path
IE is also part of the ATM Star path in Chapter 3: The ATM Star. There, "Immersive Engineering" quest asks for the Engineer's Hammer and leads to "Tesla Coil" quest, which needs a Tesla Coil. Building the Tesla Coil uses a big chunk of the mod: the Metal Press, the Engineer's Workbench with Blueprints, refining and fermenting multiblocks, and an HV Accumulator. Plan to get well into IE before you can check it off.[4]
How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?
4 parts
Immersive Engineering is all about retro, brown-and-grey industry, and you'll be building a lot of multiblocks. Everything starts with the Engineer's Hammer. You use it to make plates and dust, and to form your multiblocks. Grab it first to complete "Immersive Engineering" quest and open up the rest of the chapter.[2]
The hammer also shows up in the main progression: the "Immersive Engineering" quest quest in the Chapter 3: The ATM Star questline asks for one too, so it's worth making early either way.[4]
Step 1: Coke Oven
Your first multiblock should be the Coke Oven ("Coke Oven" quest). It smelts logs into charcoal and turns coal and coal blocks into Coal Coke, and both recipes also give you Creosote Oil. It's a 3x3x3 cube of Coke Brick. Once it's built, right-click the middle block of the front side with your hammer to form it.[2]

Step 2: Crude Blast Furnace
The Crude Blast Furnace ("Crude Blast Furnace" quest) is your first way to make Steel. You feed it an Iron Ingot plus Charcoal or Coke. Each Steel Ingot takes 60 seconds to bake. Charcoal only covers 15 seconds of that, while Coke covers the whole 60 seconds, which is why the Coke Oven comes first. The block forms of both fuels multiply that time. You'll also get Slag as a by-product.[2]
Build it as a 3x3x3 of Blast Brick, then right-click the front middle block with your hammer.[2]

Step 3: Alloy Kiln
The Alloy Kiln ("Alloy Kiln" quest) combines 2 different metals into an alloy. Put the 2 metals in the top slots and a furnace fuel such as Charcoal in the bottom slot. It's a 2x2x2 of Kiln Brick, so the quest asks for 8 of them. Form it by right-clicking the top right block with your hammer.[2]

What comes next
- Power: craft Engineer's Wire Cutters for "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest. They snip plates into wires, which go into coils, and they also remove wires from connectors.[2]
- First generator: the Kinetic Dynamo makes energy from a Waterwheel or Windmill attached to its open side. It has no internal storage, so connect it to Connectors or Accumulators.[2]
- Logistics: the Engineer's Screwdriver starts "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest and lets you configure the inputs and outputs of your machines.[2]
How does Immersive Engineering work?
8 parts
Immersive Engineering is all about realism-inspired tech. There are no glowing pipes and no magic boxes that spit out dust. You get hanging powerlines, big moving machines, and a retro-futuristic look. Many of its machines are multiblocks, and the in-game Engineer's Manual is its main documentation, so keep one handy while you build.[1]
Power: Flux, wires and connectors
IE doesn't move power through lines of cable blocks. Instead, you span wires between connectors, like real powerlines. It uses the Forge Energy API, so it works with other tech mods, but you can also play it fully standalone. Energy is measured in Flux, and the mod can report the average energy transferred over time and the average loss between points on a connection.[1][7]
Capacitors are your energy buffers. They come in three tiers, and the pack sets their limits as follows.[8]
- LV capacitor: stores 100,000 Flux, with 256 Flux/t input and 256 Flux/t output (machines.capacitors.lv.storage).[8]
- MV capacitor: stores 1,000,000 Flux, with 1,024 Flux/t input and 1,024 Flux/t output (machines.capacitors.mv.storage).[8]
- HV capacitor: stores 4,000,000 Flux, with 4,096 Flux/t input and 4,096 Flux/t output (machines.capacitors.hv.storage).[8]
Generating power
Your power options include waterwheels, windmills and biodiesel, among others. Waterwheels and windmills feed a Kinetic Dynamo, which turns rotation into energy. In this pack the dynamo's output modifier is 3, and the rotation modifier of the attached waterwheel or windmill scales that further (machines.dynamo_output).[1][7][8]
For more power, build the Diesel Generator multiblock. In this pack it outputs 4,096 Flux per tick while running, and the burn time of the fuel decides how much energy you get in total (machines.dieselGen_output).[7][8]
Multiblocks
Many of IE's machines are large multiblock structures. The Crusher is a 5x3x3 structure with rotating wheels that throws particles as it breaks ore. The Excavator is a massive 3x7x8 structure that digs ores out of the ground with a rotating bucketwheel.[1]
Other multiblocks you'll form along the way include the Crude Blast Furnace, the Improved Blast Furnace, the Metal Press, the Arc Furnace and the Diesel Generator. The mod also has an Engineer's Hammer, which you'll want to craft early.[7]
Unverified Multiblocks are usually formed by building the structure and then hitting it with the Engineer's Hammer. The sources here don't confirm the exact forming steps, so check the Engineer's Manual in-game.
Machine costs and tuning in this pack
The Crusher, Arc Furnace, Bottling Machine and Automatic Workbench each have an energy modifier and a time modifier. In this pack all of them are set to 1, so recipes use their normal energy and speed (machines.crusher.energyModifier, machines.arc_furnace.timeModifier).[8]
- Arc Furnace electrodes: Graphite Electrodes take 1 damage per tick while the furnace works. With the pack's limit of 96,000, they last about 8 consecutive in-game days of running (machines.arc_furnace.electrodeDamage).[8]
- Arc Furnace recycling: this isn't a config option anymore. A datapack recipe file controls it, like every other IE recipe (machines.arc_furnace.recycle).[8]
- Assembler: uses 80 Flux to craft each item from a recipe (machines.assembler_consumption).[8]
- Charging Station: inserts up to 256 Flux per tick into an item (machines.charger_consumption).[8]
Prospecting for mineral veins
The Core Sample Drill finds out which mineral vein sits in a chunk. In this pack it uses 40 Flux per tick and takes 200 ticks per sample (machines.coredrill.consumption, machines.coredrill.time). The result tells you which vein it found, or that there are no minerals. It can also report how much integrity a vein has left.[7][8]
Surveying also gives directional hints. First you learn there are traces of a mineral, then which direction the vein lies, and finally roughly how many steps away it is. You can buy a Mineral Deposit Map from the Structural Engineer villager, and core samples can be matched to a map as long as they're from the same dimension and inside the map's borders.[7]
Item handling
For moving items, IE gives you Conveyor Belts. Variants include the Extracting Conveyor Belt, which pulls a set number of items per second, and the Dropping Conveyor Belt. You can also use Sheetmetal Chutes (in every dye color), the Item Router and the Item Batcher. For storage there's the Reinforced Storage Crate, and crates can be sealed so you can pick them up with their contents.[7]
Fluids
The Pump can replace the fluid blocks it drains with cobblestone. You can turn this off, but the mod warns that doing so can cause lag with large amounts of fluid, so leave it on for big lakes. The Bottling Machine can be set to hold containers until they're full or to allow partial filling. Some containers can't store gases, and the mod tells you when you try.[7]
Redstone control
Many IE blocks support redstone control. You can invert the control and choose whether a strong redstone signal is required, which helps when you're automating machines or switching parts of your power grid on and off.[7]
How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?
5 parts
Everything in Immersive Engineering starts with one tool: the Engineer's Hammer. It's the first task of the "Immersive Engineering" quest quest in the mod's own chapter, and the same item also unlocks the Immersive Engineering quest in the ATM Star chapter. You'll use the hammer to make plates and dust, and to form nearly every multiblock in the mod. Get used to multiblocks, because you'll build a lot of them![2][4]
Your three starter tools
The chapter branches into three tool quests. Each one opens its own line of progression.[2]
- Engineer's Hammer from "Immersive Engineering" quest: forms your multiblocks and leads into the brick machines.[2]
- Engineer's Wire Cutters from "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest: snips plates into wires for coils, removes wires from connectors and opens up the whole power branch.[2]
- Engineer's Screwdriver from "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest: configures machine inputs and outputs and leads into item and fluid logistics.[2]
Tier 1: brick multiblocks
Your first real machines are three brick multiblocks. All three quests unlock right after the hammer. The "Coke Oven" quest is a 3x3x3 of Coke Brick. Right click the middle block on the front with your hammer to form it. It turns logs into charcoal and coal into coke, and both recipes also give you Creosote Oil.[2]

Creosote and Treated Wood
The Creosote Oil from your Coke Oven gets its own "Creosote Oil" quest quest. Its main job is making Treated Wood Planks, an essential building block for the mod. Treated Wood is also the task for the "Small Machines" quest quest, which opens up single-block machines like the Garden Cloche, External Heater and Charging Station. In this pack you can also make Treated Wood with a Create spout filling recipe.[2][5]

Next come the "Light Engineering Block" quest and "Redstone Engineering Block" quest quests, which both unlock after the starting quest. For the Light Engineering Block you'll need Iron Sheetmetal and Iron Mechanical Component. The quest points out that Iron Mechanical Components are cheaper to make in the Engineer's Workbench than in a normal crafting table.[2]
Power tiers: LV, MV and HV
Wires and power come in three tiers: Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV). Higher voltage moves more energy, and some machines need a higher tier to run. The "Tiered Voltage" quest quest asks for one coil of each: LV Wire Coil, MV Wire Coil and HV Wire Coil.[2]
For early power, try the Kinetic Dynamo with a Water Wheel or Windmill, or the Thermoelectric Generator. The Thermoelectric Generator makes power from the temperature difference between its sides.[2]
Accumulators are IE's batteries, and each tier holds more. LV holds 100kFE, MV holds 1MFE and HV holds 4MFE.[2]

A big HV goal is the "Lightning Coil" quest. The quest asks for 4 High-Voltage Coil Block, 4 HV Accumulator, 4 Light Engineering Block, 8 Copper Coil Block, 4 Steel Scaffolding and 4 Treated Wood Fence. Put Steel Fences on top of the finished coil so lightning can strike it and fill its energy storage.[2]
Unverified The quest book also has quests for the Heavy Engineering Block, Metal Press, Crusher, Arc Furnace, Excavator, Refinery and Diesel Generator. The sources available here don't include their details or their exact place in the progression.
How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?
6 parts
Immersive Engineering doesn't sit on its own in All the Mods 10. The pack has added and changed a lot of recipes so your IE tools, molds and machines work with metals and items from the rest of the pack. Here's what connects to what.[5]
Your Tesla Coil feeds the endgame
The pack added a recipe for the Nexium Emitter that needs an IE Tesla Coil. It also needs parts from a whole bunch of other mods: the Quantum Computer Multi-Threader, Infinity Range Booster, Mechanical Arm, Module Gravitational Modulating Unit, Large Advanced Motor and Player Transmitter (Nitro). So hang on to your IE knowledge, because it matters late in the pack too.[5]

The Engineer's Hammer makes the pack's plates
Your very first IE tool, the Engineer's Hammer, is how you make Plates early on. In this pack the hammering recipes were changed so they give you shared metal plates like Iron Plate, Copper Plate and Steel Plate.[2][5]
The hammer also works on space metals. It can turn ingots into Desh Plate, Ostrum Plate and Calorite Plate.[5]

Metal Press Molds in the Stamper
Your IE Metal Press Molds also work in a Stamper machine. The Metal Press Mold: Plate makes plates like Lead Plate and Uranium Plate. The Metal Press Mold: Rod makes rods like Steel Rod and Netherite Rod.[5]
The pack added even more Stamper recipes on top of those. The Metal Press Mold: Gear makes the Bronze Gear, Tin Gear, Platinum Gear and Netherite Gear. The Rod mold also makes the Nickel Rod, Zinc Rod, Invar Rod and Tin Rod.[5]

Recycling back into shared metals
- The pack added Arc Furnace recipes that melt IE Sheetmetal back into ingots. For example, Steel Sheetmetal becomes a Steel Ingot.[5]
- Sheetmetal slabs go into the Arc Furnace too and come out as nuggets. For example, Silver Sheetmetal Slab becomes a Silver Nugget.[5]
- Storage slabs like the Steel Slab craft back into full blocks such as the Steel Block.[5]
- You can smelt or blast old IE steel tools and armor into Steel Nugget. Faraday armor pieces give you Aluminum Nugget.[5]

Quests outside the IE chapter
IE also shows up in the "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" quest chapter. The quest "Immersive Engineering" quest there asks you for an Engineer's Hammer, the same tool that starts the main IE chapter.[2][4]
Unverified The sources don't show which mod adds the Stamper machine, or exactly what the seed Squeezer recipes produce.
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Immersive Engineering?
5 parts
Immersive Engineering has its own quest chapter, simply called "Immersive Engineering", and it's a great way to learn the mod step by step. It kicks off with "Immersive Engineering" quest, which just asks you to grab an Engineer's Hammer. That hammer is your key tool for plates, dust and forming nearly every multiblock in the chapter.[2]
Three more quests are the roots of their own branches: "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest for power, "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest for moving and storing stuff, and "Small Machines" quest for single-block machines.[2]
First multiblocks and crafting blocks
- After "Immersive Engineering" quest, you unlock "Crude Blast Furnace" quest (asks for Blast Brick), "Coke Oven" quest (asks for Coke Brick) and "Alloy Kiln" quest (asks for 8 Kiln Brick).[2]
- The same starting quest also unlocks "Light Engineering Block" quest and "Redstone Engineering Block" quest, which ask for an Light Engineering Block and an Redstone Engineering Block.[2]
- Once the Coke Oven is done, "Creosote Oil" quest asks for a Bucket of Creosote Oil. You need that oil for Treated Wood.[2]
Power branch
- "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest asks for Engineer's Wire Cutters.[2]
- Next comes "Wire Coils" quest, where any one of the LV Wire Coil, MV Wire Coil or HV Wire Coil counts.[2]
- Wire Coils then unlocks "Connectors" quest, "Accumulators" quest, "Relays" quest and "Transformers" quest, each of which accepts any tier. It also unlocks "Tiered Voltage" quest, which wants all three wire coils.[2]
The power branch also has quests for generators. "Energy from moving things!" quest asks for a Kinetic Dynamo and leads to quests for the Windmill (a quest in "Immersive Engineering") and the Water Wheel (a quest in "Immersive Engineering"). "Energy from Temperature" quest asks for a Thermoelectric Generator. "Lightning Coil" quest is the big one: it wants all the parts for the Lightning Coil multiblock, including 4 High-Voltage Coil Block, 8 Copper Coil Block and 4 HV Accumulator.[2]
Logistics branch
- "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest asks for an Engineer's Screwdriver. It unlocks four quests: "Moving Items" quest (a Conveyor Belt), "Moving Fluids" quest (a Fluid Pipe), "Storing Fluids" quest (either barrel) and "Storing Items" quest (either crate).[2]
- Each of those leads further. Moving Fluids unlocks "Pipe Valve" quest. Storing Fluids unlocks "Tank" quest, which asks for 34 Iron Sheetmetal and 4 Treated Wood Fence. Storing Items unlocks "Silo" quest, which asks for 50 Iron Sheetmetal and 4 Treated Wood Fences.[2]
Small machines and big machines
"Small Machines" quest asks for Treated Wood Planks. It opens quests for the External Heater, Garden Cloche, Turntable, Charging Station and Electromagnet.[2]
When you've finished both the Light and Redstone Engineering Block quests, the machine multiblocks open up: "Crusher" quest, "Mixer" quest and "Bottling Machine" quest. Each one asks for the full set of blocks needed to build that machine.[2]
There is also a set of defence quests that unlock after a quest called Offense and Defense. They cover the Tesla Coil, Chemthrower Turret, Gun Turret and Razor Wire.[2]
Unverified The rest of the chapter was cut off in the available data. Quests for other machines and tools, such as the Metal Press, Arc Furnace, Excavator or Mining Drill, could not be confirmed.
Main progression
Immersive Engineering also shows up in the main questline: "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" includes a quest called "Immersive Engineering" quest.[4]
Unverified What the ATM Star quest actually asks for could not be confirmed from the available data.
Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?
4 parts
Immersive Engineering splits its settings across three files: a client file for visuals, a server file for machines, wires, ores and tools, and a startup file. These are the settings that most affect your playthrough in All the Mods 10 8.1, with the values this pack actually uses.[6][8][9]
Ore generation is switched off
This is the big one. In this pack, every IE ore has its vein size set to 0, and the config says 0 disables generation. That covers ores.bauxite.vein_size, ores.lead.vein_size, ores.silver.vein_size, ores.nickel.vein_size, ores.deep_nickel.vein_size and ores.uranium.vein_size. Don't go looking for IE's own ore blocks in your world.[8]
preferredOres decides which mod's items IE gives you from the Excavator and from crushing recipes that have no matching IE item. The list works in priority order. This pack puts minecraft first, then alltheores, then allthemodium, kubejs, mekanism and several other tech mods.[9]
Wires and power
- Copper wire: wires.copper.transferRate is 2048 IF/t and connectors handle 256. The max length is 16 blocks, and wires.copper.distanceLoss is 0.0125 per 16 blocks.[8]
- Electrum wire: wires.electrum.transferRate is 8192 IF/t and connectors handle 1024. The max length is 16 blocks, and the loss is 0.003 per 16 blocks.[8]
- HV wire: wires.hv.transferRate is 32,768 IF/t and connectors handle 4096. The max length is 32 blocks, and the loss is 0.0008 per 16 blocks.[8]
Capacitors store 100,000 Flux for LV, 1,000,000 for MV and 4,000,000 for HV. Their input and output rates are 256, 1024 and 4096 Flux per tick. A lightning rod outputs 16,000,000 Flux when it's struck, and machines.dieselGen_output is 4096 Flux per tick.[8]
Machines worth knowing
- Excavator: it uses 4096 Flux per tick, and machines.excavator.yield caps each chunk at 38,400. Veins can start already depleted by up to 0.2, and machines.excavator.particles is left on.[8]
- Arc Furnace: machines.arc_furnace.electrodeDamage is 96,000, the mod default. That's about 8 in-game days of nonstop running per electrode. Recycling is no longer a config option; a datapack controls it now.[8]
- Garden Cloche: it draws 8 Flux per tick. One fertilizer dose lasts 6000 ticks and uses 250 fluid.[8]
- Floodlights and powered lanterns still prevent mob spawns, through machines.floodlight.spawnPrevent and machines.lantern.spawnPrevent.[8]
- The Fluid Pump replaces the fluid it picks up with cobblestone to reduce lag. This is machines.pump.placeCobble, left at its default.[8]
Every per-machine energy and time modifier, for the crusher, metal press, mixer, sawmill and the rest, is set to 1 in this pack. The Engineer's Hammer has a durability of 100, and the Wirecutter has 250.[8]
Client-side settings
In this pack, badEyesight is set to true, so the Engineer's Manual uses bold, darker text. manualGuiScale is 4. increasedTileRenderdistance is 1.5, so windmills stay visible from farther away.[6]
Unverified The pack's config files don't show the mod defaults for most of these options. Apart from the electrode lifetime and the pump's cobblestone setting, it isn't confirmed which of these values All the Mods 10 changed from Immersive Engineering's defaults.
What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?

badEyesight Set this to true if you suffer from bad eyesight. The Engineer's manual will be switched to a bold and darker text to improve readability. config/immersiveengineering-client.toml | true |
disableFancyTESR Disables most lighting code for certain models that are rendered dynamically (TESR). May improve FPS. Affects turrets and garden cloches config/immersiveengineering-client.toml | false |
earDefenders_SoundBlacklist A list of sounds that should not be muffled by the Ear Defenders. Adding to this list requires knowledge of the correct sound resource names. config/immersiveengineering-client.toml | [] |
