What is Immersive Engineering?

1 part

Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired technology with a retro-futuristic look. Instead of glowing pipes and magic boxes, you get hanging powerlines, rotating wheels and big machines that feel like real industrial equipment.[1]

Many of its machines are multiblocks. The Crusher, for example, is a 5x3x3 structure that visibly breaks ore with rotating wheels. The Excavator is a massive 3x7x8 multiblock that digs ores out of the ground with a giant bucketwheel.[1]

Power is the other big hook. The mod uses Forge Energy, so it works alongside the other tech mods in the pack. Instead of running lines of cable blocks, you string wires between connectors. You can generate power in several ways, including waterwheels, windmills and biodiesel.[1]

This mod is for you if you enjoy building your base into a working factory and like tech that looks the part. If you get stuck, check the in-game Engineer's Manual. It's the mod's own documentation and covers everything.[1]

In All the Mods 10

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194. The mod has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

The pack gives the mod its own quest chapter. It starts with your basic tools and materials: the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters, the Engineer's Screwdriver and Treated Wood Planks. Each of these opens its own branch of quests.[3]

Unverified The provided pack files don't confirm whether Immersive Engineering items are needed for the ATM Star, so this guide doesn't cover that.

How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?

5 parts

Immersive Engineering is a realism-inspired tech mod. Many of its machines are multiblocks, and it moves power through cables strung between connectors instead of lines of blocks. It also has its own in-game documentation, the Engineer's Manual, and it's worth keeping a copy nearby while you work through this chapter.[1]

In All the Mods 10, the Immersive Engineering quest chapter opens with quests that have no prerequisites. They ask for the Engineer's Hammer in a quest in "?", the Engineer's Wire Cutters in a quest in "?", the Engineer's Screwdriver in a quest in "?" and Treated Wood Planks in a quest in "?". Each one opens up its own branch of the chapter, so these are your first crafts.[3]

A good order to follow

  1. Make the Engineer's Hammer first. Its quest unlocks the brick quests and the Light Engineering Block and Redstone Engineering Block quests.[3]
  2. Craft Coke Brick for a quest in "?". That quest leads straight into Coal Coke and a Bucket of Creosote Oil.[3]
  3. Once you have Creosote Oil, the chapter asks for Treated Wood Planks again in a quest in "?". After that comes the Engineer's Crafting Table in a quest in "?".[3]
  4. Use the Engineer's Wire Cutters branch to start on power. It leads to wire coils, connectors, accumulators, the Thermoelectric Generator and the Kinetic Dynamo.[3]

The brick quests

Once you have the hammer, you can start on the brick quests. You need a Coke Brick, a Blast Brick for a quest in "?", and 8 Kiln Brick for a quest in "?". Here are the in-pack recipes.[3]

Treated wood

Treated wood shows up in many Immersive Engineering recipes, and the quests ask for it twice early on. The pack includes filling recipes that turn any planks into Treated Wood Planks, and one of them uses Creosote Oil. That's why the creosote quest comes before the second treated wood quest.[3][4]

First power

Immersive Engineering generates power with things like water wheels and windmills and sends it through cables between connectors. In the quests, the Kinetic Dynamo in a quest in "?" leads to the Water Wheel and the Windmill. The wire coil quest a quest in "?" unlocks connectors, relays, accumulators and transformers.[1][3]

Engineering blocks

Don't skip the Light Engineering Block quest (a quest in "?") or the Redstone Engineering Block quest (a quest in "?"). Many of the larger quests later in the chapter depend on both, and those quests ask for these blocks in bulk together with Steel Scaffolding and other parts.[3]

Unverified The provided sources don't show the in-pack recipes for the Engineer's Hammer, Screwdriver or Wire Cutters, or which multiblock each type of brick builds. Check these in the Engineer's Manual or your recipe viewer. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Immersive Engineering work?

8 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Immersive Engineering is all about realism-inspired tech. There are no glowing pipes and no magic boxes that spit out dust. You get hanging powerlines, big moving machines, and a retro-futuristic look. Many of its machines are multiblocks, and the in-game Engineer's Manual is its main documentation, so keep one handy while you build.[1]

Tip: In this pack, the Engineer's Manual has its bad-eyesight mode switched on by default, so its text is bold and darker for readability. Its GUI scale is set to 4. You can change both in badEyesight and manualGuiScale.[5]

Power: Flux, wires and connectors

IE doesn't move power through lines of cable blocks. Instead, you span wires between connectors, like real powerlines. It uses the Forge Energy API, so it works with other tech mods, but you can also play it fully standalone. Energy is measured in Flux, and the mod can report the average energy transferred over time and the average loss between points on a connection.[1][6]

Capacitors are your energy buffers. They come in three tiers, and the pack sets their limits as follows.[7]

Tip: The text overlay is enabled in this pack, so looking at blocks like capacitors or pumps shows you their current configuration right on screen (showTextOverlay).[5]

Generating power

Your power options include waterwheels, windmills and biodiesel, among others. Waterwheels and windmills feed a Kinetic Dynamo, which turns rotation into energy. In this pack the dynamo's output modifier is 3, and the rotation modifier of the attached waterwheel or windmill scales that further (machines.dynamo_output).[1][6][7]

For more power, build the Diesel Generator multiblock. In this pack it outputs 4,096 Flux per tick while running, and the burn time of the fuel decides how much energy you get in total (machines.dieselGen_output).[6][7]

Multiblocks

Many of IE's machines are large multiblock structures. The Crusher is a 5x3x3 structure with rotating wheels that throws particles as it breaks ore. The Excavator is a massive 3x7x8 structure that digs ores out of the ground with a rotating bucketwheel.[1]

Other multiblocks you'll form along the way include the Crude Blast Furnace, the Improved Blast Furnace, the Metal Press, the Arc Furnace and the Diesel Generator. The mod also has an Engineer's Hammer, which you'll want to craft early.[6]

Unverified Multiblocks are usually formed by building the structure and then hitting it with the Engineer's Hammer. The sources here don't confirm the exact forming steps, so check the Engineer's Manual in-game.

Machine costs and tuning in this pack

The Crusher, Arc Furnace, Bottling Machine and Automatic Workbench each have an energy modifier and a time modifier. In this pack all of them are set to 1, so recipes use their normal energy and speed (machines.crusher.energyModifier, machines.arc_furnace.timeModifier).[7]

Prospecting for mineral veins

The Core Sample Drill finds out which mineral vein sits in a chunk. In this pack it uses 40 Flux per tick and takes 200 ticks per sample (machines.coredrill.consumption, machines.coredrill.time). The result tells you which vein it found, or that there are no minerals. It can also report how much integrity a vein has left.[6][7]

Surveying also gives directional hints. First you learn there are traces of a mineral, then which direction the vein lies, and finally roughly how many steps away it is. You can buy a Mineral Deposit Map from the Structural Engineer villager, and core samples can be matched to a map as long as they're from the same dimension and inside the map's borders.[6]

Item handling

For moving items, IE gives you Conveyor Belts. Variants include the Extracting Conveyor Belt, which pulls a set number of items per second, and the Dropping Conveyor Belt. You can also use Sheetmetal Chutes (in every dye color), the Item Router and the Item Batcher. For storage there's the Reinforced Storage Crate, and crates can be sealed so you can pick them up with their contents.[6]

Fluids

The Pump can replace the fluid blocks it drains with cobblestone. You can turn this off, but the mod warns that doing so can cause lag with large amounts of fluid, so leave it on for big lakes. The Bottling Machine can be set to hold containers until they're full or to allow partial filling. Some containers can't store gases, and the mod tells you when you try.[6]

Redstone control

Many IE blocks support redstone control. You can invert the control and choose whether a strong redstone signal is required, which helps when you're automating machines or switching parts of your power grid on and off.[6]

How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?

5 parts

The pack has a dedicated Immersive Engineering quest chapter, and it starts from four entry points with no prerequisites: the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters, the Engineer's Screwdriver and Treated Wood Planks. Each one opens its own branch. The hammer branch covers bricks and structural blocks, the wire cutters branch covers power, the screwdriver branch covers logistics, and treated wood leads into utility machines.[3]

Tier 1: Bricks, coke and treated wood

Once you have the hammer, a quest in "?" unlocks the brick quests. You need 8 Kiln Brick, plus a Coke Brick and a Blast Brick. It also unlocks the Light Engineering Block and Redstone Engineering Block quests, which become important later.[3]

The coke brick quest branches into Coal Coke and a Bucket of Creosote Oil. The creosote quest then asks for treated wood planks again. That chain continues to the Engineer's Crafting Table and then the Engineer's Workbench, which is the gateway to the tool tier.[3]

Tip: If you're running Create, this pack also has Create-based routes for some early materials. Treated wood planks can be made with a filling recipe, and kiln bricks and reinforced blast bricks can be made with item application.[4]

The wire cutters branch starts with any wire coil in a quest in "?". It accepts the LV Wire Coil, the MV Wire Coil or the HV Wire Coil. a quest in "?" then asks for all three, which works as a checklist for the three wire tiers. The same coil quest also unlocks quests for connectors, relays, transformers and accumulators.[3]

Logistics

The screwdriver branch covers moving stuff around. The Fluid Pipe quest unlocks the Fluid Pump, Fluid Outlet, Pipe Valve and Fluid Router. The Conveyor Belt quest unlocks the other conveyor types, the Item Batcher, sheetmetal chutes and the Item Router. Storage quests follow the crates and barrels: a quest in "?" asks for 50 Iron Sheetmetal and 4 treated fences, and a quest in "?" asks for 34 iron sheetmetal and 4 treated fences.[3]

Tier 2: Engineering blocks and steel

After you finish the light engineering and redstone engineering quests, a group of quests opens up that each ask for a batch of structural blocks at once. Some also need the Heavy Engineering Block quest. The steel-heavy end of the chapter is the top tier. For example, a quest in "?" asks for 27 Reinforced Blast Brick, 8 Steel Sheetmetal, 6 steel blocks, 6 heavy engineering blocks and 10 light engineering blocks, among other items. a quest in "?" asks for 9 Radiator Block, 4 Generator Block and 13 heavy engineering blocks, among other items.[3]

Reinforced blast bricks get their own quest, together with a hopper. It leads to two separate quests for the Blast Furnace Preheater.[3]

Unverified The sources don't say which multiblock structure each batch quest represents, or how much power each wire tier can carry, so check the in-game manual for those.

Tier 3: Tools and weapons

The Engineer's Workbench quest, a quest in "?", branches into the endgame gear. You'll find several Engineer's Blueprint quests, plus quests for the Revolver, Mining Drill, Chemical Thrower, Railgun, Engineer's Skyhook, Buzzsaw, Accumulator Backpack, Heavy Plated Shield and Engineer's Toolbox. Almost every tool then has its own upgrade quests. The revolver alone leads to cartridges, the Revolver Speedloader and three upgrades.[3]

Immersive Engineering items also show up outside the mod's own chapter. Another chapter asks for the hammer and then a Tesla Coil. The tips chapter accepts the Engineer's Crafting Table, Engineer's Workbench, Engineer's Circuit Workbench or Turntable as one of its options.[8][9]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?

7 parts

Immersive Engineering plays well with the rest of this pack. It uses the Forge Energy API that most other tech mods use, so its power setup can work alongside other tech mods, even though it can also be played fully standalone.[1]

Metals come out as All The Ores items

The pack changed many Immersive Engineering recipes so that the metal they produce is the shared All The Ores version, not a separate Immersive Engineering one. Plates you make with the Engineer's Hammer come out as plates like Steel Plate or Copper Plate. Turning metal slabs such as Steel Slab back into blocks gives you blocks like Steel Block.[4]

Steel PlateChanged by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

Recycling gear works the same way. Smelting or blasting steel tools and armor, such as the Steel Pickaxe or Steel Chestplate, gives you Steel Nugget. Faraday armor pieces like the Faraday Helmet give you Aluminum Nugget.[4]

Arc Furnace sheetmetal recycling

The pack added Arc Furnace recipes that melt decorative sheetmetal back into All The Ores metal. Full sheetmetal blocks such as Steel Sheetmetal turn into ingots like Steel Ingot. Sheetmetal slabs such as Steel Sheetmetal Slab turn into nuggets like Steel Nugget. This works for aluminum, constantan, electrum, lead, nickel, silver, steel and uranium.[4]

HOP Graphite from farms and bees

You don't have to smelt all your graphite the hard way. If you grow Hop Graphite Essence, the pack has a crafting route to HOP Graphite Ingot for it. Which All the Mods 10 quests use Immersive Engineering?

    5 parts

Immersive Engineering has its own quest chapter in this pack, and a few of its items also show up in other chapters. The dedicated chapter has four starting quests with no prerequisites, so you can begin with whichever one you get to first: the Engineer's Hammer in a quest in "?", the Engineer's Wire Cutters in a quest in "?", the Engineer's Screwdriver in a quest in "?", or Treated Wood Planks in a quest in "?".[3]

Hammer branch: bricks and the workbench

    1. After the hammer, the chapter opens quests for Blast Brick in a quest in "?", 8 Kiln Brick in a quest in "?", Redstone Engineering Block in a quest in "?", Light Engineering Block in a quest in "?" and Coke Brick in a quest in "?".[3]
    2. Coke Bricks lead to Coal Coke in a quest in "?" and a Bucket of Creosote Oil in a quest in "?".[3]
    3. Creosote leads to Treated Wood Planks in a quest in "?", then the Engineer's Crafting Table in a quest in "?", then the Engineer's Workbench in a quest in "?".[3]

    Power, wiring and utility branches

    Multiblock material quests

Once you finish the Redstone Engineering Block and Light Engineering Block quests, a set of quests opens up that asks for bundles of construction blocks: a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[3]

Some material quests also need the Heavy Engineering Block quest (a quest in "?"). These are a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". The last one asks for 27 Reinforced Blast Brick among other blocks.[3]

The Heavy Engineering Block, Generator Block, Radiator Block and Reinforced Blast Brick quests (a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?") all share one prerequisite. The defence quests share a different one; they cover the Gun Turret, Chemthrower Turret, Tesla Coil and Razor Wire (a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?"). The Reinforced Blast Brick quest leads to two Blast Furnace Preheater quests (a quest in "?", a quest in "?").[3]

Unverified The shared prerequisite quests for the Heavy Engineering group and the defence group could not be identified, so where these groups sit in the chapter is unconfirmed.

    Tools, blueprints and upgrades

The Engineer's Workbench unlocks seven Engineer's Blueprint quests. It also unlocks quests for the Heavy Plated Shield, Engineer's Toolbox, Buzzsaw, Accumulator Backpack, Railgun, Revolver, Mining Drill, Chemical Thrower and Engineer's Skyhook (a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?").[3]

From there, each tool opens quests for its upgrades, ammo or heads. For example, drill heads are in a quest in "?", and revolver cartridges are in a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[3]

    Other chapters

Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?

    4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Immersive Engineering splits its settings across three files: a client file for visuals, a server file for machines, wires, ores and tools, and a startup file. These are the settings that most affect your playthrough in All the Mods 10 8.1, with the values this pack actually uses.[5][7][11]

    Ore generation is switched off

This is the big one. In this pack, every IE ore has its vein size set to 0, and the config says 0 disables generation. That covers ores.bauxite.vein_size, ores.lead.vein_size, ores.silver.vein_size, ores.nickel.vein_size, ores.deep_nickel.vein_size and ores.uranium.vein_size. Don't go looking for IE's own ore blocks in your world.[7]

preferredOres decides which mod's items IE gives you from the Excavator and from crushing recipes that have no matching IE item. The list works in priority order. This pack puts minecraft first, then alltheores, then allthemodium, kubejs, mekanism and several other tech mods.[11]

    Wires and power

Watch out: Wire loss is exponential, and connector throughput is separate from the wire's own transfer rate. wires.enableWireDamage is on, so powered wires hurt entities that touch them. wires.blocksBreakWires is also on, so placing a block inside a wire breaks it and drops the coil.[7]

Capacitors store 100,000 Flux for LV, 1,000,000 for MV and 4,000,000 for HV. Their input and output rates are 256, 1024 and 4096 Flux per tick. A lightning rod outputs 16,000,000 Flux when it's struck, and machines.dieselGen_output is 4096 Flux per tick.[7]

    Machines worth knowing

Every per-machine energy and time modifier, for the crusher, metal press, mixer, sawmill and the rest, is set to 1 in this pack. The Engineer's Hammer has a durability of 100, and the Wirecutter has 250.[7]

    Client-side settings

In this pack, badEyesight is set to true, so the Engineer's Manual uses bold, darker text. manualGuiScale is 4. increasedTileRenderdistance is 1.5, so windmills stay visible from farther away.[5]

Tip: If your FPS is struggling, try turning on enableVBO, which is off in this pack. It's much faster but may clash with visual effects from other mods. You can also try disableFancyTESR, which affects turrets and garden cloches. On older GPUs, you may need to turn off stencilBufferEnabled.[5]

Unverified The pack's config files don't show the mod defaults for most of these options. Apart from the electrode lifetime and the pump's cobblestone setting, it isn't confirmed which of these values All the Mods 10 changed from Immersive Engineering's defaults.

What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?

    1 part

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier. That same version arrived in pack release 4.3, so it is the one you are playing with now.[2][12]

    Pack updates, newest first

    • 4.3: updated from 12.4.0-192 to 12.4.2-194.[12]
    • 4.2: updated from 12.3.3-191 to 12.4.0-192.[13]
    • 4.1: updated from 12.3.2-190 to 12.3.3-191.[14]
    • 4.0: updated from 12.3.1-189 to 12.3.2-190.[15]
    • 3.0: updated from 12.2.0-187 to 12.3.1-189.[16]
    • 2.47: updated from 12.1.1-186 to 12.2.0-187.[17]
    • 2.43: updated from 12.1.0-185 to 12.1.1-186.[18]
    • 2.37: updated from 12.0.0-182 to 12.1.0-185.[19]

The pack changelogs only record these version bumps. They don't say what changed inside each Immersive Engineering release.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]

Unverified No changelogs are stored for the shipped jars, so we can't confirm any specific recipe, balance or mechanic changes between these Immersive Engineering versions. If you need those details, check the mod's own release notes before relying on them.
