Thermal: Extra is a mod in Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2, where it is version 3.3.1-1.20.1. Add tiers of augments and new machines to Thermal Expansion! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Thermal: Extra?

1 part

Thermal: Extra is an addon for Thermal Expansion that adds tiers of augments and new machines. This pack includes version 3.3.1-1.20.1.[1][2]

It adds four metals: soul infused, shellite, twinite and dragonsteel, with the Soul Infused Ingot, Shellite Ingot, Twinite Ingot and Dragonsteel Ingot. Each metal has its own molten fluid, nugget, block and dust forms, and its own hardened glass block.[1][3]

On top of that, the mod adds new augment tiers and five new machines plus one dynamo. Dragonsteel and dragonsteel infused augments only support a few augment types.[1]

Where it sits in the quest book

In the pack's quest book, the AllTheModium chapter (Production group, chapter 36 of 44) has a quest that asks you to obtain the Soul Infused Ingot (a quest in "AllTheModium"). It comes after a quest asking for 3 Soul Sand Dust and Thermal apatite dust (a quest in "AllTheModium"), which itself follows the Thermal pulverizer quest.[4]

The quest book lists the Soul Infused Ingot quest among those that come before the Allthemodium Ingot quest (a quest in "AllTheModium"). The a quest in "AllTheModium" quest in the same chapter asks for the Dragonsteel Ingot and shows no earlier quest. It is listed among the quests that come before the Unobtainium Ingot quest (a quest in "AllTheModium").[4]

The Extended Crafting chapter comes right after, also in the Production group (chapter 37 of 44). Among its ingot quests are the ones asking for a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting" and a quest in "Extended Crafting". The chapter has 248 quests in total, and the rest of them are in the quest book itself.[3]

How do you get started with Thermal: Extra?

6 parts

Thermal: Extra adds four metals to Thermal: soul infused, shellite, twinite and dragonsteel. Each one has its own molten fluid, ingot, nugget, block, dust and hardened glass. In this pack the quest book asks you for soul infused and dragonsteel on the way to Allthemodium and Unobtainium, so start there.[1][4]

Step one: Soul Sand Dust

In the AllTheModium chapter (Production group), a quest in "AllTheModium" asks for a Machine Pulverizer right after the intro quest. The next quest, a quest in "AllTheModium", asks for 3 Soul Sand Dust plus some Apatite Dust. The Pulverizer makes the dust, so build that machine first.[4][5]

Recipe id: thermal_extra:machine/pulverizer/soul_sand_dust

The Pulverizer turns soul fire base blocks into Soul Sand Dust.

The pack also added a Mekanism crusher recipe for the same dust, so you have a second way to make it.[5]

Step two: Soul Infused Ingot

a quest in "AllTheModium" comes right after the dust quest. It is one of the five quests that a quest in "AllTheModium" comes after, so this ingot is on the main path. The pack added an alloying recipe for Soul Infused Ingot.[4][5]

Step three: Dragonsteel Ingot

a quest in "AllTheModium" has no prerequisite in the book, so you can start on it early. It is also one of the quests that a quest in "AllTheModium" comes after. The pack changed the normal crafting recipe for Dragonsteel Ingot and added an alloying recipe as a second route.[4][5]

Tip: The pack also changed the dragonsteel casting recipes. A chiller makes a Dragonsteel Ingot from 90 Molten Dragonsteel and a Dragonsteel Gear from 360. The crucible recipe that melts a gear down gives back 360.[5]

Step four: the augment smithing upgrade

Many of this mod's augment recipes are smithing recipes that use Augment Smithing Upgrade. Make one early, so you are ready when you start upgrading augments.[5]

Step five: Abyssal Ingot

The Extended Crafting chapter (Production group, chapter 37 of 44) has a quest for Abyssal Ingot, a quest in "Extended Crafting". It sits among many other ingot quests. The pack added an alloying recipe for it. Part of that chapter's quests could not be shown for this guide, so check the quest book for the rest.[3][5]

How does Thermal: Extra work?

4 parts

Thermal: Extra is an addon for Thermal Expansion. It adds new machines, a dynamo, four new metals and extra tiers of augments. There's no in-game guidebook for it, so everything below comes from the mod's own descriptions and the pack's recipe data. I'll only tell you what those actually back up.[1][6]

The machines

Here's what each device does, going by its in-game description.[6]

  • Adv. Refinery: a complex distillery that refines fluids into more distinct products. It supports more item and fluid outputs than the Fractionating Still, so it's the upgrade for getting more out of your oils.[6]
  • Endothermic Dehydrator: dries out items or fluids to give various products, and it may also concentrate fluids into a more potent one. Think of it as an automatic drying rack.[6]
  • Fluid Mixer: mixes two fluids together to make new fluids, and it may give you a secondary fluid as a byproduct.[6]
  • Nitratic Igniter: uses explosions to break items down into little pieces. It can break ores down into pieces that are then melted.[6]
  • Crop Harvester: breaks crops and other plants when they are ready. It only breaks them, so you need your own way to collect the drops.[6]
  • Magmatic Accumulator: gives a slow but steady supply of lava. It needs adjacent lava sources to work, and it works better in the Nether.[6]
  • Gelid Dynamo: generates Redstone Flux from extreme cold.[6]

The Adv. Refinery is crafted like this:[5]

The Nitratic Igniter has its own recipe type. In this pack, a raw aluminum recipe turns raw material into several ore chunks, with an iron chunk as a bonus:[5]

Nitratic Igniter (thermal_extra)

  • 2× any aluminum raw material

Recipe id: thermal_extra:machine/nitratic_igniter/raw_aluminum

The Endothermic Dehydrator uses its own recipe type too. Here's the Beef Jerky one:[5]

Recipe id: thermal_extra:machine/endothermic_dehydrator/beef_jerky

Tip: Some machine recipes in the mod need a catalyst. When one does, the machine tells you with the line "Catalyst is required."[6]

Molten metals and casting

Each of the mod's four metals (soul infused, shellite, twinite and dragonsteel) has its own molten fluid, plus ingot, nugget, block, dust and a hardened glass block.[1]

In this pack the Crucible melts these metals back down with fixed numbers. An ingot gives 90 of the molten fluid for 5,000 energy. A gear gives 360 for 20,000 energy. That's the same for dragonsteel, shellite, soul infused and twinite.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

Dragonsteel shows the full loop. The pack changed both of these recipes. The Crucible turns a gear into Molten Dragonsteel, and the Chiller turns 360 of it back into a gear using a gear cast.[5][7]

The pack also changed the recipe for Dragonsteel Ingot, so don't rely on the mod's default:[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: thermal_extra:crafting/dragonsteel_ingot

Dragonsteel and twinite ingots matter beyond this mod. Every tier 3 seed recipe the pack adds to the Botania Runic Altar includes both of them.[15]

Augment tiers and upgrading

The mod's project page lists the augment tiers in this order: soul infused, enderium, shellite, twinite, dragonsteel, then dragonsteel infused. It also says the dragonsteel tiers only support a few augment types. This pack adds an abyssal tier as well, with items like the Abyssal Radial Enhancement and the Abyssal Integral Component.[1][5][6]

You move up a tier with smithing. The pack has 44 smithing recipes that turn this mod's augments into other augments of this mod. They use a smithing upgrade item (Augment Smithing Upgrade) plus the gear of the tier you're aiming for. Here's the abyssal radial one:[5]

Smithing Transform

The Advanced Item Filter Augment is made the same way, starting from Thermal's own item filter augment and a Shellite Gear:[5]

The top abyssal component is crafted normally, from the dragonsteel one:[5]

Recipe id: thermal_extra:crafting/abyssal_integral_component

The abyssal material chain

Abyssal is the pack's most processed metal, and it can move between forms in several machines:[5][16]

  • The pack adds an Evolved Mekanism alloying recipe that makes Abyssal Block. A block crafts back into 9 Abyssal Ingot.[5][16]
  • Abyssal Dust smelts or blasts into an ingot. The pack also adds an EnderIO alloy smelting recipe for it.[5]
  • The pack's Mekanism crusher recipe turns an ingot back into dust.[5]
  • A Thermal Smelter recipe turns abyssal armor into 3 ingots.[5]
  • The Thermal Press, with a Rod Die, turns an ingot into 2 Abyssal Rod.[5]
2× Abyssal RodMod recipe

Press (thermal)

Recipe id: thermal_extra:machine/press/abyssal_rod

Unverified The pack ships empty override files for its Crucible recipes for raw metals and ore chunks (aluminum, arcane gold, copper, gold, iron, lead, nickel, osmium, silver, tin, uranium and zinc) and for the abyssal dust Pulverizer recipe. What that means for melting chunks isn't confirmed here.

Unverified Side configuration, item and fluid automation, and any multiblock structures for these machines aren't described in the available sources.

How do you progress through Thermal: Extra?

6 parts

There is no single tier ladder for this mod in the sources I have, so this section follows what the pack actually gives you: where the quest book asks for the metals, and how each one is made in the pack's recipes. The metals to know are Soul Infused Ingot, Dragonsteel Ingot, Shellite Ingot, Abyssal Ingot and Twinite Ingot.[3][4][5]

Where the quest book puts them

Two of the mod's metals sit on the way to the big ATM metals, in the AllTheModium chapter (group Production, chapter 36 of 44). That chapter has quests for Soul Infused Ingot and Dragonsteel Ingot.[4]

  1. Start at "Allthemodium Intro" quest, then do a quest in "AllTheModium", which asks for the Thermal Pulverizer.[4]
  2. Next comes a quest in "AllTheModium". It asks for three Soul Sand Dust and Apatite Dust.[4]
  3. After that, a quest in "AllTheModium" asks for the ingot itself.[4]
  4. The Soul Infused Ingot quest is one of five that lead into a quest in "AllTheModium".[4]

Dragonsteel is different: a quest in "AllTheModium" has no quest before it. It is one of 11 quests listed before a quest in "AllTheModium".[4]

The Extended Crafting chapter (group Production, chapter 37 of 44) also has an ingot quest for each of Shellite Ingot, Twinite Ingot, Soul Infused Ingot, Abyssal Ingot and Dragonsteel Ingot. None of them has a quest before it, and all of them are listed before "The one and only" quest, the Ultimate Ingot quest.[3]

Soul Infused

The pack adds a Mekanism crushing recipe that turns soul fire base blocks into Soul Sand Dust, next to the mod's own Pulverizer recipe. The ingot is then made in an alloying recipe the pack adds.[5]

Dragonsteel

Watch out: Dragonsteel is changed in this pack. The shapeless crafting recipe for the ingot, the Chiller recipes that turn molten dragonsteel into ingots and gears, and the Crucible recipe that melts a gear are all marked as changed by the pack. The alloying recipe is added by the pack.[5]

Shellite, Soul Infused and Twinite use the same amounts in the pack's Crucible data.[5][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

Upgrading augments

The metals also feed the mod's augments. The mod has 44 smithing recipes that take its own items and make its own items. One of them upgrades a Dragonsteel Radial Enhancement into the Abyssal Radial Enhancement, using an Abyssal Gear and the Augment Smithing Upgrade template. Another makes the Advanced Item Filter Augment from a Shellite Gear.[5]

How does Thermal: Extra work with other mods?

5 parts

Thermal: Extra adds four metals: soul infused, shellite, twinite and dragonsteel. This pack uses those metals in a lot of recipes from other mods, mostly as gates for bigger progression steps. Here is where they show up.[1]

Botania and Mystical Agriculture

The pack adds Runic Altar recipes that turn out Mystical Agriculture seeds. Each one needs Dragonsteel Ingot and Twinite Ingot, plus Terrasteel Ingot and Tertium Essence. Seeds made this way include Silver Seeds, Steeleaf Seeds, Certus Quartz Seeds, Brass Seeds, Graphite Seeds and Glowstone Seeds.[5]

Most of these also want a Tier 3 Crafting Seed. The Skeleton Seeds recipe is different: it asks for Soul Jars and a Soulium Seed Base instead. Here is the silver seeds one as an example:[5]

Evolved Mekanism alloying

The pack adds alloying recipes of the Evolved Mekanism type for some of this mod's items. They make Dragonsteel Ingot and Abyssal Ingot, and a separate recipe makes the Abyssal Block. These pull in items from other mods, such as Thermal's nickel and diamond dust.[5]

The Allthemodium chain

This is the biggest hook. The pack changed the Allthemodium Ingot recipe (an Extended Crafting table recipe) so it needs a Soul Infused Ingot. It also changed the Unobtainium Ingot recipe (Draconic Evolution fusion crafting) so it needs a Dragonsteel Ingot, next to a long list of items from other mods.[5]

The quest book follows the same path. In the AllTheModium chapter (Production group, chapter 36 of 44), the a quest in "AllTheModium" quest comes after a quest in "AllTheModium", which asks for Soul Sand Dust from this mod. a quest in "AllTheModium" then comes after the Soul Infused Ingot quest. a quest in "AllTheModium" is only unlocked after a quest in "AllTheModium", among other quests.[4]

The Extended Crafting chapter (Production group, chapter 37 of 44) also has quests for a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting" and a quest in "Extended Crafting". The rest of that chapter is in the quest book.[3]

Infinity gear

The pack changed the Extended Crafting recipes for Nature's Ruin, Eternal Fertility and Infinity Boots. Each is a huge list of tools or boots from many mods, and this mod's gear is part of it. The axe takes Abyssal Axe, Dragonsteel Axe, Shellite Axe and Twinite Axe, among others. The hoe also takes Lumium Hoe, and the boots take Signalum Boots.[5]

Thermal, Mekanism and Common Ore Library

The pack changed the chiller recipes that turn Molten Dragonsteel into a Dragonsteel Ingot (90 of the fluid) or a Dragonsteel Gear (360). The pack's crucible recipes run the other way: an ingot gives 90 and a gear gives 360.[5][7][11]

The pack also changed the press recipe where the Rod Die turns a bronze ingot into 2 Bronze Rod. On the Mekanism side, the dehydrator breaks 90 of Molten Raw Uranium into 3 Uranium Dust and a Lead Dust.[5]

Finally, the Advanced Item Filter Augment is made with a smithing recipe that uses Thermal's Item Filter Augment and a Shellite Gear.[5]

Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Thermal: Extra?

2 parts

Thermal: Extra shows up in two quest chapters, both in the Production group of the quest book: AllTheModium (chapter 36 of 44) and Extended Crafting (chapter 37 of 44). In both, the mod's items are tasks inside longer chains.[3][4]

AllTheModium chapter

Here the mod appears in two places. The first is a short chain that leads up to the Allthemodium ingot. The second is a single quest that feeds the Unobtainium ingot.[4]

  1. Start with "Allthemodium Intro" quest, the chapter's intro quest (its task is a kill).[4]
  2. Next comes a quest in "AllTheModium", which asks for a Thermal pulverizer machine.[4]
  3. Then a quest in "AllTheModium", the first one that involves this mod. It asks for 3 Soul Sand Dust plus Thermal's apatite dust.[4]
  4. After that, a quest in "AllTheModium" asks you to hand in a Soul Infused Ingot.[4]
  5. The Soul Infused Ingot quest is one of five prerequisites for a quest in "AllTheModium". The others are the Energetic Alloy Ingot, Refined Glowstone Ingot, Flux-Infused Ingot and Nitro Crystal quests.[4]

The other quest is a quest in "AllTheModium", which asks for a Dragonsteel Ingot. The book lists no prerequisite for it. It is one of the quests that must be done before a quest in "AllTheModium", alongside several others such as the Vibranium Ingot quest.[4]

Extended Crafting chapter

This chapter is a big ingot checklist. Five of its quests ask for ingots from this mod: a quest in "Extended Crafting" (Shellite Ingot), a quest in "Extended Crafting" (Twinite Ingot), a quest in "Extended Crafting" (Dragonsteel Ingot), a quest in "Extended Crafting" (Soul Infused Ingot) and a quest in "Extended Crafting" (Abyssal Ingot).[3]

None of the five has a prerequisite listed in the book. All of them are prerequisites for "The one and only" quest, the Ultimate Ingot quest, which asks for the Ultimate Ingot from Extended Crafting. That quest has a very long list of ingot quests in front of it, and these five are part of that list.[3]

Tip: Dragonsteel Ingot and Soul Infused Ingot each have a quest in both chapters, so one ingot can cover two quests.[3][4]

What changed in Thermal: Extra between versions?

2 parts

Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships Thermal: Extra 3.3.1-1.20.1. The mod was already in the pack by 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it's been around for a while. Here are the two most recent mod releases, which are the ones the changelogs cover.[2]

Thermal: Extra 3.3.0

  • Fixed some recipes that had the wrong number of items.[17]
  • Changed the dragonsteel and abyssal recipes, because the author felt they were too easy to craft.[17]

Thermal: Extra 3.3.1

  • Added missing recycling recipes for tools.[18]

Since the pack runs 3.3.1, you get the changes from both of these releases. If you're crafting dragonsteel or abyssal gear and it feels like more work than the mod's older versions, that's the 3.3.0 recipe change at work.[2][17][18]

Unverified The pack's own changelogs have no entries for this mod, so which Thermal: Extra version earlier pack releases shipped is unverified.
