Refined Storage is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 2.0.9. An elegant solution to your hoarding problem. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Refined Storage?

1 part

This pack ships Refined Storage 2.0.9 (the NeoForge build). It is the pack's main storage-network mod, and it has its own quest chapter, so the quest book can walk you through building a network step by step.[1][2]

Where it fits in the progression

The chapter starts with one quest that asks for Quartz Enriched Iron, a Machine Casing, a Processor Binding and one processor. Any of the Basic Processor, Improved Processor or Advanced Processor counts. That is "Refined Storage 2" quest, and nearly everything else in the chapter unlocks from it.[2]

Several of these quests also accept items from add-on mods, such as higher-tier importers, exporters and disk interfaces, or larger storage parts. So the pack expects Refined Storage to be extended as well as used on its own.[2]

Refined Storage items also show up in the pack's creative chapter. There, the Controller, the three processors and Quartz Enriched Iron appear in tasks alongside items from other mods.[3]

Unverified The sources don't show whether the pack changes any Refined Storage recipes or config values, or whether the mod is on the ATM Star quest path. Check the recipe and config sections of this guide before assuming mod defaults.

How do you get started with Refined Storage?

6 parts

Refined Storage in this pack starts with a small set of base materials, and most of the network grows out of them. The pack's quest book has an opening storage quest that asks for four things, and the Controller quest and several upgrade quests come right after it. Here is what to make first, and why.[2]

Step 1: Quartz Enriched Iron

Quartz Enriched Iron is the base material you will use again and again. The Machine Casing, the Disk Drive and the storage parts all need it. This pack adds three ways to get it: an AE2 transform recipe, a Create mixing recipe, and a Chicken Roost output. Use whichever fits your progress.[4]

The opening quest "Refined Storage 2" quest wants Quartz Enriched Iron, a Machine Casing, a Processor Binding and one processor. Any of Basic Processor, Improved Processor or Advanced Processor counts.[2]

Step 3: Controller and Cable

The Controller provides your network with energy. If a Controller is inactive, the network can't use it as an energy source. Its quest is "Controllers" quest, which comes after the opening quest. The Cable quest, "Connecting Your Network" quest, follows the Controller quest.[2][5]

Cable connects devices to each other, though you can also place devices directly against each other.[5]

Step 4: Disk Drive and storage

Your network needs somewhere to keep items. The Disk Drive holds your storage disks. Its quest, "Virtual Storage Drives" quest, also asks for a Storage Housing. The Disk Drive recipe uses a Machine Casing, which is one more reason to finish Step 2 early.[2][4][5]

The Disk Drive needs the Machine Casing from Step 2.

For capacity, start with the 1k Storage Part. The 4k Storage Part is built from a 1k part, and the 16k Storage Part from a 4k part, so you climb one tier at a time. The quest for these parts is "Storing Items" quest.[2][4]

Step 5: A Grid to use it all

A Grid lets you interact with what you have stored. You can then upgrade it to a Crafting Grid for crafting abilities. Both are in quest "Accessing Your Network" quest, which comes after the Disk Drive quest.[2][5]

Where to go next

After the Cable you can branch out. The Importer gets resources into the network and the Exporter gets them out. The Interface does both at once. The External Storage lets the network use a block like a chest as storage. Autocrafting comes after the Grid in the quest book, starting with the Pattern Grid and Pattern.[2][5]

How does Refined Storage work?

6 parts

Refined Storage is built around a storage network: a set of devices that share a single pool of items and fluids. Everything below comes from the mod's in-game descriptions and the pack's recipe dump. The pack has no config files for this mod, so I can't give you energy costs or speed numbers.[4][5]

The network: power and connections

Every network starts with a Controller. You can use a single Controller or several, and they provide the energy for the whole network. A Controller has a redstone mode. When it is inactive, the network can't use it as an energy source.[5]

You link devices with Cable, or you can place devices directly against each other. A Relay lets you switch whole sections of the network on or off, and it also lets you create new branches.[5]

If you don't want to run cable, a Network Transmitter, a Network Receiver and a Network Card can add components to the network without cables.[5]

Storing items and fluids

Storage disks sit in a Disk Drive. Fluids use their own Fluid Storage Disks, which also go in the Disk Drive. An External Storage can also bring in a block like a chest and make its contents part of the network.[5]

Each storage has an access mode. Insert/extract lets the network do both. Insert only means the network can only put things in, but the contents still show up in a Grid. Extract only means the network can only take things out.[5]

Storage parts are tiered, and many of them are built on the tier below. Item parts include the 1k Storage Part, the 4k Storage Part and the 16k Storage Part. Fluid parts include the 64B Fluid Storage Part, 256B Fluid Storage Part and 1024B Fluid Storage Part, and the 4096B Fluid Storage Part sits above those. Disks and blocks come in the same tiers. The higher parts also need a processor: the Improved Processor for the 16k item part and the 1024B fluid part, and the Basic Processor for the 256B fluid part.[4]

Higher item tiers build on the previous part.

Once you have a part, you can turn it into a disk with the shaped disk recipe, or you can combine the part with a Storage Housing.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: refinedstorage:16k_storage_disk_from_storage_housing

Moving resources in and out

  • Importer: gets resources from a target inventory into the network. Its filter says which resources may be imported, and it can work as an allowlist or a blocklist.[5]
  • Exporter: pulls resources out of the network. Its filter says which resources to export.[5]
  • Interface: imports and exports at the same time.[5]
  • Disk Interface: transfers resources between the network and storage disks. Its transfer mode decides whether resources move from the network into the disks or from the disks into the network. It also has an allowlist or blocklist filter.[5]
  • Constructor: places blocks from the network into the world, based on its filter.[5]
  • Destructor: breaks blocks in the world and sends them into the network. Its filter works as an allowlist or a blocklist for which blocks it may destroy.[5]
  • Detector: uses redstone to check for a chosen resource stored in the network.[5]

Filters can be fuzzy. With fuzzy mode off, a filter matches exactly. With it on, the filter matches while ignoring components.[5]

Autocrafting

You create patterns in a Pattern Grid and put them in an Autocrafter. For processing patterns, the input slots are what gets pulled from the network and sent into the target inventory. The output slots are what the network expects back for the task to count as successful.[5]

If an Autocrafter faces another Autocrafter, they form a chain. That lets you have more patterns going into a single machine. The GUI shows whether a given Autocrafter is the head of a chain or just part of one.[5]

An Autocrafter Manager lets you manage your patterns in one place. An Autocrafter only appears there if its visibility option is enabled. The manager can show all Autocrafters, only the visible ones, or only the ones that aren't full yet. You can search pattern inputs, pattern outputs, Autocrafter names, or all of those at once.[5]

An Autocrafting Upgrade in an Interface, Exporter or Constructor makes that device autocraft resources on demand. An Autocrafting Monitor shows the status of your tasks, and a Wireless Autocrafting Monitor does the same remotely. In the crafting preview, the max option fills in the largest amount you can craft right now without starting the task. There is also an option to notify you when the task finishes.[5]

Grids, search and security

A Grid is how you interact with your storage, and you can upgrade it to a Crafting Grid. A Wireless Grid gives wireless access, and a Portable Grid lets you use the contents of disks without a storage network. A Storage Monitor lets you view, insert or extract resources in the network.[5]

Tip: In a Grid's search box, start with @ to filter by mod, # to filter by tag, or $ to filter by tooltip.[5]

A Security Manager protects the network. While it is active, it blocks all operations by default. You then add Security Cards to permit or deny specific operations for each player.[5]

Pack-specific recipe changes

The pack changes how you get Silicon. A shapeless recipe converts AE2's silicon into Refined Storage silicon. The 1k part recipe also accepts any item in the common silicon tag, so you aren't locked to a single source.[4]

How do you progress through Refined Storage?

7 parts

Refined Storage progression in this pack is laid out in the Logistics storage quest chapter. Most of it grows out of one starter quest, so you can see what to build next just by following the arrows.[2]

Step 1: The starter materials

The first quest, "Refined Storage 2" quest, asks for four things: Quartz Enriched Iron, a Machine Casing, a Processor Binding, and one processor, which can be a Basic Processor, Improved Processor or Advanced Processor. Nearly every other quest in the chapter follows on from this one.[2]

The pack adds its own recipes for these materials. Quartz Enriched Iron has three pack-added routes: a transform recipe, a Create mixing recipe, and a Chicken Roost output. The Machine Casing and Processor Binding recipes are pack-added too.[4]

Beyond the main chapter

A separate creative chapter also has quests that include Refined Storage items, such as the Controller, all three processor tiers and Quartz Enriched Iron, alongside items from other mods. One of them is "Creative Controller" quest.[3]

How does Refined Storage work with other mods?

5 parts

Refined Storage doesn't sit alone in this pack. Other mods build on its parts, and the pack's own recipe changes tie it into a few more. Here's what the recipes and quests show.[2][4]

Extra Storage: bigger disks, parts and blocks

Extra Storage extends the storage tiers past the 64k Storage Part and the 4096B Fluid Storage Part. Its parts, disks and blocks are crafted from Refined Storage components. These are the mod's own recipes, and the pack hasn't changed them.[4]

The first step up is the 256k Storage Part, which is built from a 64k Storage Part.[4]

Turning a part into a disk is shapeless. You combine a Storage Housing with the matching part.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: extrastorage:disk/shapeless/disk_256k

Fluid storage follows the same pattern. The 16384b Fluid Storage Part is made from a 4096B Fluid Storage Part.[4]

Extra Storage also has upgrade recipes for storage blocks and disks. They take the matching new part plus Refined Storage blocks or disks of the lower tiers. The 1024k block upgrade, for example, uses the 256k Storage Block together with the 1k, 4k, 16k and 64k Refined Storage storage blocks.[4]

The mod also adds the Advanced Importer and Advanced Exporter. Each one upgrades the regular Refined Storage version using an Improved Processor and a Redstone Torch.[4]

The storage quests count these parts too. "Storing Items" quest accepts the Refined Storage item parts or the Extra Storage 256k, 1024k, 4096k and 16384k parts. "Storing Fluids" quest does the same for fluid parts, including the 16384b to 1048576b ones.[2]

Cable Tiers: upgraded cable devices

Cable Tiers adds Elite and Ultra versions of the importer, exporter, constructor, destructor, interface and disk interface. The pack changed all of these recipes.[4]

An Elite device needs the base Refined Storage block, an Advanced Processor and an iron storage block. The Ultra version takes the Elite one, another Advanced Processor and a diamond storage block.[4]

The quests accept these upgraded devices in place of the plain ones. "I/O Connections" quest takes any importer and exporter tier, "World Interaction Devices" quest does the same for the constructor and destructor, and "Interacting With Stored Items" quest covers the disk interface.[2]

Advanced Peripherals: RS Bridge

The RS Bridge links a Refined Storage network to the Advanced Peripherals mod. The pack changed its recipe, which uses the Peripheral Casing alongside Refined Storage parts, as shown below.[4]

Creative chapter crossovers

A few quests in the creative chapter pair Refined Storage items with items from other mods. "Creative Wireless Universal Grid" quest asks for the Universal Grid's wireless universal grid, an Avaritia redstone singularity and Quartz Enriched Iron. "Creative Disk Interface" quest asks for the Ultra Disk Interface, quartz enriched iron and an Extra Storage neural processor. "Creative Controller" quest asks for the Controller, all three processor tiers, an Avaritia json singularity and a Refined Types infinite energy storage part.[3]

There's one more crossover in the storage chapter. a quest in "Storage" accepts a wireless crafting grid from Refined Storage Quartz Arsenal as an alternative to the wireless grid.[2]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Refined Storage?

5 parts

Refined Storage shows up in two quest chapters in this pack. The main one is the logistics storage chapter, which walks you through the whole mod. The second is the creative chapter, where it only supplies a few ingredients. None of the quests have titles, so I'll point to each one by its ID.[2][3]

Logistics storage chapter

Everything starts at "Refined Storage 2" quest. It asks you to hand in Quartz Enriched Iron, a Machine Casing, a Processor Binding, and one processor. Any of the Basic Processor, Improved Processor or Advanced Processor counts. The quest unlocks after two earlier quests from outside this chapter.[2]

Once it's done, seven quests open up at the same time, so you can take them in any order. Most are simple 'have this item' tasks.[2]

After the Controller

The Controller quest leads to two branches. "Virtual Storage Drives" quest asks for the Disk Drive and the Storage Housing. "Connecting Your Network" quest asks for a Cable.[2]

The Cable quest opens four more quests:[2]

After the Disk Drive

The Disk Drive quest opens four quests of its own:[2]

Grid, autocrafting and networking

The Grid quest leads to the last three branches. "Patterns" quest asks for the Pattern Grid and a Pattern. a quest in "Storage" asks for the Network Card, Network Transmitter and Network Receiver. a quest in "Storage" is the wireless quest. It accepts a Wireless Grid, a Wireless Autocrafting Monitor or a wireless crafting grid from an addon, and it also wants a Range Upgrade.[2]

The Pattern Grid quest finishes the autocrafting line with three quests: the Autocrafting Monitor in "Autocraft Monitor" quest, the Autocrafter in "Autocrafting" quest, and the Autocrafter Manager in a quest in "Storage".[2]

The Network Card quest leads to the last quest in the chapter, a quest in "Storage". It asks for the Security Manager, the Security Card and the Fallback Security Card.[2]

Creative chapter

In the creative chapter, Refined Storage items are only part of the requirements. Each of these quests mixes in items from other mods.[3]

All three of these quests unlock after quests that aren't part of the sources for this section, so I can't say where they sit in the wider questline.[3]
