Mekanism
25 quests, with the items each asks for and where they come from in FTB StoneBlock 4.
- Supercritical Phase Shifter
The Supercritical Phase Shifter (SPS) is a large structure that uses as much power as you can give it to generate small amounts of Antimatter from large amounts of Polonium. This completely eliminates all possible Nuclear Waste if that is a concern, though the energy used to process an amount of Polonium is greater than the energy made to create it, so additional power is required. Simply feed chemical Polonium into one SPS Port, power into another attached to a Supercharged Coil on the inside, and one more SPS Port for extracting Antimatter. Each 1000mB of Antimatter can be turned into a single Antimatter Pellet.

- Welcome To Mekanism!
Mekanism is the ultimate technology mod! The Metallurgic Infuser is the core machine used in Mekanism. With this machine, you'll infuse metals with specific materials to create Alloys and Circuits used for more advanced machinery. For a complete description of the interface, check the next page! Inside of the Infuser's interface, we have multiple slots that we can interact with to create new items. The slot on the far left is the Extra Slot, which is where you place infusion items like Redstone or Coal. The middle-left slot is for the item you wish to infuse, like Iron or Osmium! On the right, we have the output slot as well as an energy slot. This slot can use items that store energy like batteries. If you see an energy slot in a Mekanism machine, chances are you can put these items in it!
Asks for:Metallurgic Infuser
- Radiation and You
When a Reactor's waste buffer overflows or a tube/machine holding radioactive chemicals is broken, a radiation source is spilled out into the world causing a nuclear accident. Strong sources of radiation can linger in the world for several real-life hours. If irradiated, the only option available is to stop receiving radiation through distance, protection, or both, and then let the radiation slowly fade. Radioactive Waste Barrels provide a safe place for regular and spent nuclear waste to slowly decay; multiple barrels are able to be used in parallel. This material cannot be destroyed through any other method. Polonium and plutonium do not decay in barrels, but can be stored. Comparators can read how full a Waste Barrel is. A full Hazmat Suit or equivalent upgrades are needed to protect you from radiation. These, however, do not cure radiation effects, and cannot be equipped to creatures, so be mindful where radioactive material is managed. Tips to avoid nuclear accidents: It is safer to treat nuclear accidents as a 'when' over an 'if'. Have precautions available and ready before producing radioactive products. Use whole amounts when processing nuclear waste, and let any excess decay in waste barrels. Use logistics that transfer but don't hold the chemicals, such as Applied Energistics or Pipez. The #1 cause of nuclear accidents among players is mistakenly broken piping that holds hazardous material, a Dire situation.

- Advanced Control Circuit
With the Infuser and some Redstone, we can start by making the basic Alloys and Circuits! You can even combine them together to make Advanced Control Circuits for more advanced machines. These will be used to create most of the items in Mekanism.
Needs: Welcome To Mekanism!Asks for:Advanced Control Circuit,

- Making Steel
The Infuser can also be used to convert iron into Steel using Carbon for the infusion! You can place Coal or Charcoal in the infusion slot to convert it into Carbon, with Charcoal giving double the amount. Once you have some in the machine, you can run Iron through once to get Enriched Iron. Infusing this again with carbon will give you Steel Dust which you can smelt into Steel Ingots! Steel is a great material to make tools out of due to its high durability, and is also needed to make the basic pipes from the mod.

- Steel Casing
To make most machines in the mod, we'll need Steel Casings! Note: Most machines have an internal push/pull limit, which can be bypassed by pipes. If you wish to speed up your production, make sure to utilize pipes.

- Fissile Fuel
The Fissile Fuel needed to run Fission Reactors is made by processing Sulfur, Fluoride, and Uranium with some water products. It seems complicated but, unlike in real life, it is easier than it seems. First, use Sulfuric Acid to break down Fluorite into Hydrofluoric Acid in a Chemical Dissolution Chamber. Second, enrich Uranium ingots into Yellow Cake Uranium, before oxidizing it into Uranium Oxide. Finally, combine the Hydrofluoric Acid and Uranium Oxide in a Chemical Infuser before piping it into an Isotopic Centrifuge to produce Fissile Fuel. Tip: Fluorite blocks take about as much Sulfuric Acid to break down as a single Fluorite Crystal, but produce as much Hydrofluoric Acid as nine Crystals, saving on Sulfur!

Chemical Infuser,
Isotopic Centrifuge,
Rotary Condensentrator
- Mekanism Fission Reactor
Mekanism Fission Reactors take fissile fuel and coolant, and convert them into nuclear waste and hot coolant. Fission Reactors do not generate power by themselves. They can produce steam that can be pumped into a Turbine. The Reactor accepts two forms of coolants which can be piped directly into the multiblock via a port. Water Cooling is simpler but less effective, while Sodium Cooling is stronger but requires an additional multiblock. Failing to provide coolant will not stop a running reactor, but will cause it to overheat, take internal damage, and eventually explode, releasing radioactive material. Failing to empty the waste will cause it to also leak out into the environment and accumulate as radiation. The smaller the build, the slower and fewer things can go wrong. Take your time and test it out. Building and operation are on the following pages. The smallest functioning Fission Reactor is a 3x4x3 multiblock, which can scale up to 18x18x18. The edges of all Reactors must be Reactor Casings, but the faces can also include reactor glass, logic adapters, and/or ports. The Reactor multiblock will form once the cuboid is fully built and at least one Fission Fuel Assembly is inside with a Control Rod Assembly on top. At least 4 Fission Reactor Ports are needed to supply a Fission Reactor: one for inputting Water, one for Fuel, one set to output Steam, and one set to output Waste. Reactor Ports can be toggled by Sneak + Right-Clicking them with a Configurator. Reactors can also accept Fission Reactor Logic Adaptors for reading different information about its multiblock or for turning it on/off automatically. Reactors can burn fuel at a max rate of 1mB * (number of Fuel Assemblies) per tick, down to 0.01mB/tick. This rate also adjusts coolant demand, and the production of Steam and nuclear waste. Check the recipes and make sure your pipes can handle all these rates, as well as your coolant production.

- Mekanism Turbine
Industrial Turbines are vertical multiblock structures that turn Steam into energy, and optionally back into Water using Saturating Condensers. Be careful if a turbine is full of energy, as it will stop or dump steam. The minimum size for this multiblock is a 5x5x5 structure, but adding just one layer to the height (5x6x5) quadruples its power production capacity. So, this quest will treat these dimensions (5x6x5) as the minimum. The largest size of turbine is a 17x18x17, as turbine widths need to be odd for the spinning blades. While Industrial Turbines are more complex than Fission Reactors, they can handle plenty of Steam flow. The multiblock needs a frame of Turbine Casings, with the bottom face filled with Structural Glass or more Casings. Turbine Rotors are stacked on the center block at the bottom, with two Turbine Blades applied to each. Only Structural Glass, Turbine Valves, and Casings can fill in the faces up to the top of the rotors. The Rotational Complex goes above the rotors, and surrounded by Pressure Dispersers to close off the multiblock's bottom section. Electromagnetic Coils go above the complex, at least one must touch it, and all must be connected if using more than one. Saturating Condensers can then fill in the remaining space depending on how much water needs to be recycled. The remaining empty spaces can now be filled with Glass, Casings, or Turbine Vents. The multiblock only needs 1 Vent to form, but they help with Steam flow so the more the better. Once formed, the multiblock can be interacted with to check its current rates and status. The Stats Menu can list what parts of the build are limiting the Steam flow and production rates. Fission Reactor Steam Ports can export into Turbine Valves, and Turbine Vents can export Water into the Reactor input ports, allowing for a cycle with zero pipes!

- You say Polonium, I say Plutonium
Nuclear Waste can be safely dumped into Radioactive Waste Barrels to slowly decay, but a Reactor produces a lot of waste from which we can still extract some new useful products. Centrifuging radioactive waste will create Plutonium, while further radiating it with a Neutron Activator will produce Polonium, both processes heavily reducing the amount of radioactive chemicals. These chemicals can be further converted into Pellets, removing any final few chemical impurities that will still ultimately need to decay. These Pellets are used in crafting high tier gear, as well as the ultimate power generator from the mod: the Fusion Reactor.

Polonium Pellet
- Fusion Reactor
The Fusion Reactor is Mekanism's final energy generator. Fueled by Deuterium and Tritium, or a mixture of both, it is capable of producing vast amounts of power and/or heat for relatively little upkeep. Both fuel components are produced using just water and energy! The Fusion Reactor itself requires a (un)healthy amount of Post-Fission materials to create, both to justify this level of power and contain it. To build the Fusion Reactor, place three 5x5 squares of building material that connect with each other at their mid points, replace the corners of the squares with Fusion Reactor Casing, and add four Casings around the midpoints. Then, replace the top mid-point with the Fusion Reactor Controller, and all other remaining building blocks can be replaced with reactor glass, ports, or the laser focus matrix. To start the Reactor, a small amount of D-T Fuel in a Hohlraum will be needed inside the Controller, with fuel supplied to the Reactor. A disabled Laser Amplifier will then need to collect energy from other lasers before firing a single beam containing 400 million FE or more into the Laser Focus Matrix on the Reactor. From here energy, steam, or heat can be extracted from a Fusion Reactor Port set to output mode.

- The Electrolytic Separator
This machine is used to break down specific liquids, like Water, into 2 separate gases. The first use you'll have is separating Water into Oxygen and Hydrogen. Oxygen is needed for several machines, including the Purification Chamber.
Needs: Steel CasingAsks for:Electrolytic Separator
- Fission Reactor Logic Adapter
Babysitting a Fission Reactor setup is important when it first comes online, but there are other things to do once it starts running fine on its own. This doesn't need to come at a cost to safety! This is where the Fission Reactor Logic Adapter comes in. When a Reactor is built with one or more adapter(s), they can be configured to emit a redstone signal under hazardous conditions, or to automatically activate the Reactor. For example, using a comparator reading a Radioactive Waste Barrel to tell your Reactor to turn off when the barrel is too full, or to toggle an emergency coolant supply if the reactor starts to overheat.
Needs: Mekanism Fission ReactorAsks for:Fission Reactor Logic Adapter
- Reprocessed Fissile Fragments
Plutonium can be reclaimed into Fissile Fuel with a bit of brine or salt processing. If you're using your Reactor for power and hurting for Uranium, Sulfur, or even Fluorite, this process can be looped to make your initial fuel last up to five times as long over time with up to less than a tenth of the waste. That's the magic of recycling at work!
Needs: You say Polonium, I say PlutoniumAsks for:Reprocessed Fissile Fragment
- The Crusher
The Crusher has 3 main uses in Mekanism. 1. It is used to break down ingots directly into Dusts, which can be useful for creating dusts needed for certain machines or upgrades. 2. In the Tier 2 Ore Processing Chain, the Crusher takes ore clumps made from the Purification Chamber and breaks them down into Dirty Dusts. 3. It can create Biofuel from organic materials, which is used to create new machines and byproducts that we'll need later down the road!
Needs: Steel CasingAsks for:Crusher
- Thermal Evaporation Towers
The Thermal Evaporation Tower is a multiblock that heats up the liquid inside of it to create a new liquid. For this, we'll be making Brine from Water. To make this, you'll need a minimum of 53 Thermal Evaporation Blocks, 3 Valves, and 1 Controller. Once you have those, let's learn how to build it! The Thermal Evaporation Tower multiblock is built 4 blocks wide and 4 blocks long, with a minimum height of 3 blocks and a maximum height of 18 blocks. Aside from the first layer, the center is hollow, no matter the height. Think of it like a giant bucket! The frame must also be Thermal Evaporation Blocks, with the Controller and Valves placed on the faces. Here is an example of how it might look: To interact with the block, you'll need to place the Controller on one of the faces. Each Valve is used to pump liquids in and out of the Tower. To make Brine, you'll need to give it water which can be done by pumping water into the Valve using Mechanical Pipes from a water source. You'll need another Valve to output the Brine you create, and the 3rd Valve is used to heat up the multiblock. You can make either a Fuelwood Heater or a Resistive Heater to achieve this. Fuelwood burns items like coal, while Resistive Heaters use power instead. 2k is the perfect number for a max size Tower! Once built, you'll see red sparkles indicating that it formed! Pro Tip: You can place the Heater directly on the Valve, so no pipes needed!
Needs: Steel CasingAsks for:Fuelwood Heater,
Resistive Heater,
Thermal Evaporation Block,
Thermal Evaporation Controller,
Thermal Evaporation Valve
- Lithium Dust
If you run Brine through another Thermal Evaporation Tower, it'll convert it into Liquid Lithium. We can't do much with Liquid Lithium, so we'll need to convert it into a gas using a Rotary Condensentrator. To make the best power storage in Mekanism, we'll need to convert Lithium into Lithium Dust using a Chemical Crystallizer. The Crystallizer requires Ultimate Control Circuits to craft!
Needs: Thermal Evaporation TowersAsks for:Lithium Dust
- Bio Fuel
Bio Fuel is created by crushing down organic materials in a Crusher. This is used to craft and power a Bio-Generator, which can be a useful power upgrade in the early game! It's also used to create Ethene, which is an energy-dense gas used for both power and crafting HDPE Pellets.
Needs: The CrusherAsks for:Bio Fuel
- The Enrichment Chamber
The Enrichment Chamber has several important uses! This machine can break down 3 raw ores into 4 Dusts, essentially multiplying your ingot returns. It's also used to create Enriched versions of items, like Enriched Redstone, Enriched Carbon, and more! These enriched items can be used in the Metallurgic Infuser for 8x the original value.
Needs: Steel CasingAsks for:Enrichment Chamber
- Pressurized Reaction Chamber
The Pressurized Reaction Chamber is an advanced machine that combines 1 liquid, 1 gas, and 1 item to produce a new item, and sometimes a gas byproduct. This is used to make Ethene, HDPE Pellets, and more!
Needs: The Enrichment ChamberAsks for:Pressurized Reaction Chamber
- Hdpe Pellet
Using the Pressurized Reaction Chamber, we can use Substrates to make HDPE Pellets. These advanced pellets are used to create many high tier items and machines! To make these, you'll need to combine Liquid Ethene, Oxygen, and Substrates. From here, you can run them through an Enrichment Chamber to create HDPE Sheets! Note that it takes LIQUID Ethene, meaning you'll need to create a Rotary Condensentrator to convert it from a gas to a liquid first. Did you pump in the gas already? Use a Gauge Dropper to remove it!
Needs: Bio Fuel, Pressurized Reaction ChamberAsks for:HDPE Pellet,
HDPE Sheet,
Substrate
