Applied Energistics 2 is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 19.2.18. AE2: A popular automation and storage mod (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

Stuck? Why it might not be working

  • AE2 autocrafting: the job sits on Scheduled and never crafts
Scheduled means patterns the CPU has queued but not yet pushed to a machine; Crafting means outputs already pushed and still awaited. A job frozen on Scheduled is a push that keeps failing, or an output that never came back, and AE2 shows no message for either. It retries forever, so waiting will not fix it unless the cause was a power or channel dip that has since come back.

What is Applied Energistics 2?

1 part

Applied Energistics 2 is one of the big automation and storage mods. It replaces your room full of chests with a compact ME (Matter Energy) network, where items are stored digitally inside storage cells and you can reach all of them from terminals.[1][2][3]

Storage is only the start. Autocrafting is one of the mod's main features. You can request a complex crafting chain with a single click, keep certain items in stock, or move items around your base. It also works with modded machines through processing patterns, so it ties the rest of your tech together.[3][4]

If you love automating processes and running large, efficient systems, this mod is for you. Expect some planning, because the channel system limits how many devices a single cable can connect.[1]

This pack runs Applied Energistics 2 version 19.2.17.[5]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack's logistics and storage quest chapter walks you through the mod step by step. It starts with "Digital Storage" quest, which asks for a Flawless Budding Certus Quartz, and builds up from there.[6]

  1. Materials: Certus Quartz Dust and Certus Quartz Crystal, then Fluix Crystal and the Mysterious Cube.[6]
  2. Power and growth: the Energy Acceptor and Crystal Resonance Generator, followed by the Growth Accelerator.[6]
  3. Your first network: processors, fluix cables, the ME Controller, an ME Drive with storage cells, the Cell Workbench and the ME Crafting Terminal.[6]
  4. Autocrafting: the Crafting Unit, crafting storage, the Crafting Co-Processing Unit, the ME Pattern Encoding Terminal, then the ME Pattern Provider and Molecular Assembler.[6]
  5. Going wireless: the ME Wireless Access Point and Wireless Crafting Terminal, then the Quantum Entangled Singularity, ME Quantum Link Chamber and ME Quantum Ring.[6]

AE2 stays relevant later on. Quests in the tier 3 World Engine chapter ask for the ME Quantum Ring, ME Quantum Link Chamber and ME Pattern Provider. The creative chapter's "Creative Energy Cell" quest also needs a Certus Quartz Crystal alongside items from other mods.[7][8]

Watch out: Never break a flawless budding certus block. Even with silk touch it degrades to flawed, and you can't repair it back to flawless.[2]

How do you get started with Applied Energistics 2?

5 parts

Applied Energistics 2 is the backbone of your storage in this pack, and the storage quest chapter walks you through it step by step. Each step unlocks the next, so here is that order, why each piece matters, and the in-pack recipes you'll actually use.[1][6]

Step 1: Get certus quartz growing

The chapter opens with "Digital Storage" quest, which asks for a Flawless Budding Certus Quartz. Next comes "Certus Quartz" quest, which wants Certus Quartz Dust and Certus Quartz Crystal. Certus buds sprout from budding certus blocks, a lot like amethyst. If you break a bud before it's finished growing, you get one dust. A fully grown cluster drops four crystals, and Fortune increases that.[6][9]

Watch out: Never break a flawless budding certus block. It never decays while growing buds, but breaking it downgrades it to flawed even with Silk Touch, and you can't repair it back to flawless.[9][10]

Unverified The sources don't show how this pack gives you your first flawless budding certus or the Mysterious Cube. The official guide says to get them from meteorites, but it's not confirmed that meteorites generate in this pack. Check the quest book for how the pack hands them out.

Budding certus comes in 4 tiers: Flawless, Flawed, Chipped and Damaged. The lower tiers can degrade each time a bud grows. You can repair them by throwing them in water with Charged Certus Quartz Crystal, which you make in a Charger. This pack also has a reaction recipe that turns certus dust into crystals, so those bud drops don't go to waste.[9][11]

Step 2: Make Fluix

"Fluix Crystals" quest asks for a Fluix Crystal. You'll need Fluix for almost everything that follows, including growth accelerators and cables. Besides the mod's throw-it-in-water method, this pack includes reaction recipes for Fluix.[6][9][11]

Step 3: Power and growth accelerators

"Powering Your Network" quest wants an Energy Acceptor and a Crystal Resonance Generator. After that, a quest in "Storage" unlocks the Growth Accelerator. On their own, certus buds grow very slowly. A powered accelerator placed next to a budding block massively speeds that up, so build a few of these as your first priority.[6][9][10]

Step 4: Processors

"Processors O' Plenty" quest includes the Mysterious Cube. Mining it gives you all 4 inscriber presses. You use those presses in an Inscriber to make the three processors: Logic Processor, Calculation Processor and Engineering Processor. "AE2 Processors" quest only needs one of them, but make a few of each, because your first network uses all three.[6][9]

Step 5: Your first ME network

Next, "Cables and Channels" quest asks for cable: glass, covered or smart all count. Start with Fluix ME Glass Cable, since the other two are crafted from it.[6][11]

Cables open up a group of quests: "Adding More Channels" quest for the ME Controller, "The Start of Digital Storage!" quest for an ME Drive, a storage cell and a Cell Workbench, and "ME Crafting Terminal" quest for the ME Crafting Terminal. The drive holds your cells, and the terminal is how you actually get at your items.[6][9]

The guide recommends 4k cells for your first system because they give a good mix of capacity and types. A 4k cell holds 4,096 bytes across up to 63 types. Rushing the biggest cells isn't worth it, because every tier still holds only 63 types.[2][12]

Tip: Standard cables carry up to 8 channels. Use smart cables so you can see how channels are routed and spot devices that aren't getting one.[13]

Once your storage works, "Autocrafting" quest asks for a Crafting Unit. That starts the autocrafting branch, which leads to a ME Pattern Encoding Terminal, Blank Pattern, an ME Pattern Provider and a Molecular Assembler.[6]

How does Applied Energistics 2 work?

8 parts

Applied Energistics 2 turns your storage into a digital network. Items, fluids and more live inside storage cells, devices share one energy pool, and the system can autocraft whole recipe trees for you. Once you understand a few core ideas (networks, channels, energy, bytes and types, and patterns), the rest of the mod clicks into place.[1][14][15]

Networks and channels

A network is a group of devices linked by blocks that can pass channels. That means cables, but also full-block machines and devices like the Charger, ME Interface and ME Drive. Where a device sits doesn't matter. All that counts is which network it's connected to. To check what's actually connected, right-click with a Network Tool and it lists every component on the network.[16]

Channels work like USB ports. Every device that uses networked storage takes one. In the mod's standard behaviour, most machines, full-block devices and normal cables carry up to 8 channels, while dense cables, ME P2P Tunnels and the Quantum Network Bridge carry up to 32. Level Emitters are the notable device that doesn't need a channel. Cable colour has nothing to do with channels. It only stops differently coloured cables from connecting to each other.[17][18]

Watch out: This pack changes channel capacity. The channel mode option is set to X4 instead of the standard behaviour, and that option changes how many channels cables provide. The 8 and 32 figures above come from the mod's guide and may not match what you see in this pack. Operators can check the current mode in game with the /ae2 channelmode command.[17][19]

Unverified The exact per-cable channel counts and the ad-hoc device limit under the pack's X4 mode aren't stated in the sources. Use smart cables in game to see real usage.

On a network with a controller, channels route in 3 steps. First they take the shortest path through adjacent machines to the nearest normal cable. Then they follow that cable to the nearest dense cable. Finally they follow the dense cable back to the controller. Because channels always take the shortest path, one cable can overload while another sits empty. Build tree-like networks with dense cables branching from the controller, regular cables branching from those, and small clusters of devices on the regular cables. Use colours, Cable Anchor and tunnels to steer the paths. Smart cables show you exactly where channels flow.[17]

A network without a controller is ad-hoc. Each device uses 1 channel network-wide, and in the standard mode the network supports up to 8 channel-using devices before they all shut down. Channels also cost 1⁄128 AE/t per node they pass through.[17]

You can mount many devices as subparts on a cable in the same block for compact builds. Shift-right-click with a Certus Quartz Wrench or Network Tool to pop off a single subpart without breaking the whole block.[20]

Energy

Every network has one shared energy pool. Devices pull from it, and Energy Acceptors, Vibration Chambers and controllers add to it. There are no transfer rate limits, so it's best to treat the whole network as one big multiblock machine when you plan your power. AE2 converts Forge Energy into its own unit, AE, at 2 FE = 1 AE. This conversion only goes one way, and the pack keeps the mod's default ratio.[14][19]

A network can't use or take in more energy in a single tick than it can store. That's why dumping a full inventory of cobblestone into a tiny network can drain it and make it reboot. The fix is simple: add energy storage.[14]

  • Every cable, machine or part adds 25 AE of built-in buffer. The pack keeps this at the mod default.[14][19]
  • A controller holds 8,000 AE internally.[14]
  • An Energy Cell stores 200k AE, and one is enough for most networks.[14]
  • A Dense Energy Cell stores 1.6M AE, for running off stored power or feeding big spatial IO setups.[14]

For built-in generation, the Vibration Chamber makes 5 AE per fuel burn tick. It speeds up to 40 AE/t when the energy is being used and slows down to 4 AE/t when it's being wasted. The Crystal Resonance Generator makes 20 AE per tick. All of these are the mod defaults in this pack. AE2 is designed to be paired with other tech mods for serious power.[14][19]

Storage: bytes, types and priority

Storage cells are limited by both bytes and types. Each item costs one bit, so 8 items take 1 byte, and fluid cells store 8 buckets per byte. Every distinct item is one type, and each type also costs some bytes up front. Every cell tier holds 63 types, so a drive full of cells gives you 630 types. Keep randomly damaged gear from mob farms out of your system, because each unique piece counts as its own type.[21]

  • 1k cell: 1,024 bytes, holding 8,128 items with 1 type in use or 4,160 with all 63.[21]
  • 4k cell: 4,096 bytes, holding 32,512 items with 1 type or 16,640 with 63.[21]
  • 16k cell: 16,384 bytes, holding 130,048 items with 1 type or 66,560 with 63.[21]
  • 64k cell: 65,536 bytes, holding 520,192 items with 1 type or 266,240 with 63.[21]
  • 256k cell: 262,144 bytes, holding 2,080,768 items with 1 type or 1,064,960 with 63.[21]

Because bigger cells don't add types, smaller cells stay useful all game. Network storage is whatever your cells hold, plus any inventory a Storage Bus points at. Import Buses push items into it, Export Buses pull items out, and Interfaces and terminals do both.[21][22]

You set priority with the wrench icon in the top-right of a GUI. Incoming items go to the highest-priority storage first. When priorities tie, storage that already holds the item wins, and whitelisted cells count as already holding it. Extraction starts from the lowest priority.[10][22]

Autocrafting

  1. Something makes a crafting request. That can be you in a terminal, or an Export Bus or Interface with a Crafting Card. Use your pick-block key (usually middle mouse) to request items you already have in stock.[15]
  2. The system works out every ingredient and sub-step and stores the job in a crafting CPU.[15]
  3. An ME Pattern Provider pushes the pattern's ingredients into the adjacent inventory. That's a Molecular Assembler for crafting patterns, or any machine for processing patterns.[15]
  4. The result has to come back through a real item-entering-the-system event, like an Import Bus, an Interface or the provider itself. Piping it into a chest with a Storage Bus on it won't work.[15]
Crafting CardMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ae2:materials/cardcrafting

Lets Export Buses and Interfaces request crafts.

Crafting, smithing and stonecutting patterns all run on a provider next to a Molecular Assembler, and they can share one setup. Processing patterns are the flexible option. They only promise that pushing these ingredients out will eventually bring the result back, so they drive furnaces, modded machines or entire factories. Several providers with identical patterns run in parallel, and a pattern like 8 in, 8 out pushes a whole batch at once.[4][15]

Pattern providers have a blocking mode that holds back new ingredients while the target inventory still contains pattern inputs. Processing patterns can also have secondary results. These can't be requested directly, but they get used before stored items in multi-step crafts.[10]

Watch out: The crafting algorithm can't handle recursive recipes, such as duplication recipes. For those, or for input-free farms, use a Level Emitter with a crafting card set to emit redstone when it needs to craft.[4][10]

Subnetworks and P2P

A subnet is just a separate network. Use one to limit what devices can reach, like an Import Bus plus Storage Bus acting as a pipe, or to save main-network channels by sending one pattern provider into an Interface that feeds several machines. Watch out for full-block devices that quietly join your subnet to the main network. Quartz Fiber shares energy without connecting networks, while a Quantum Bridge acts like a wireless dense cable, so both ends count as one network.[16][23]

P2P tunnels are taxed. Energy through an energy tunnel costs 0.025 of the amount moved, and items or fluids cost 0.025 AE per equivalent I/O bus operation. Both are the mod defaults in this pack.[19]

Certus growth

Certus buds grow on budding certus blocks, which come in Flawless, Flawed, Chipped and Damaged tiers. Imperfect blocks can degrade each time a bud grows. Flawless ones never degrade, but you can't mine them, even with Silk Touch. Throw a budding block or certus block into water with Charged Certus Quartz Crystal to repair or create budding blocks. Broken unfinished buds drop dust, and fully grown clusters drop four Certus Quartz Crystal, with more from Fortune.[10][24]

A powered Growth Accelerator next to the budding block speeds growth massively. In this pack it ticks every 10 ticks, the mod default. Covering too many sides of a budding block eventually cancels out the benefit of adding more accelerators.[19][24]

Tip: Silk Touch prevents decay when you break an imperfect budding block, and spatial IO never causes any decay, so use it to move even Flawless budding blocks.[10][24]

Spatial IO

Spatial IO swaps a volume of your world with a matching volume in the spatial storage dimension. You need one Spatial IO Port per network, so a subnet is recommended. Insert a spatial cell and pulse the port with redstone to trigger it. Anything inside the volume, including you, goes along for the ride.[25]

  • The volume is the pylons' outer bounding box shrunk by 1 block on every side. The minimum is 3x3x3, which defines a 1x1x1 volume.[25]
  • All pylons must sit in that outer shell, be on the same network and be at least 2 blocks long. Filling more of the shell improves efficiency.[25]
  • The energy is used instantly and can be huge, so stock up on Dense Energy Cells.[14][25]
Watch out: Once you use a spatial cell, its XYZ dimensions are locked forever and can't be rotated. A 16^3 cell can take any size up to 16x16x16, but the port won't run if the cell doesn't match the volume.[25]

Pack settings worth knowing

In this pack, an Annihilation Plane facing up at maximum world height passively generates sky stone. Matter Cannon and Tiny TNT block damage are both turned off.[19]

How do you progress through Applied Energistics 2?

7 parts

Applied Energistics 2 progression in this pack runs through a storage and logistics quest chapter. You start with certus quartz, branch into fluix, power and processors, build your first ME network, and finish with autocrafting, wireless access and quantum links. Here's the path the quests take, stage by stage.[6]

Getting started with certus quartz

The first quest, "Digital Storage" quest, asks for a Flawless Budding Certus Quartz. The next one, "Certus Quartz" quest, wants Certus Quartz Dust and Certus Quartz Crystal, and it unlocks the rest of the chapter.[6]

If you only have a Flawed Budding Certus Quartz, there's a Crystal Fixer recipe that upgrades it into the flawless version.[11]

You can make dust in more than one way. This pack changed the Create milling recipe for certus quartz dust, and it adds its own Ars Nouveau crush recipe for the same dust. Once you have dust, AE2's transform recipe grows it back into fresh crystals.[11]

Transform (ae2)

Fluix, power and matter

Right after certus, "Fluix Crystals" quest asks for a Fluix Crystal. Several machines can make it, including AE2's own transform recipe, a Create mixing recipe that this pack changed, an ExtendedAE Crystal Assembler recipe and an Advanced AE reaction recipe.[6][11]

After that, "AE2 Processors" quest accepts any one of Logic Processor, Calculation Processor or Engineering Processor, and "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest wants Sky Stone Dust and Sky Stone.[6]

Unverified The pack files don't say what the custom machine in this quest does, so check its quest text in-game.

Watch out: The pack changed the Crystal Assembler recipes for the Logic, Calculation and Engineering Processors. Check the in-pack recipe instead of trusting an older video or wiki.[11]

Plain certus quartz also shows up late: the creative chapter quest "Creative Energy Cell" quest includes a Certus Quartz Crystal among its tasks.[8]

How does Applied Energistics 2 work with other mods?

5 parts

Applied Energistics 2 is the backbone for a whole family of addons in this pack. Many of their recipes are built on AE2 parts like processors, storage components and Sky Stone, and the pack has changed several of them. If you've already got an ME network running, most of these extras are just a few crafts away.[11]

Better pattern providers and quantum crafting

Once your autocrafting outgrows the basic ME Pattern Provider, you can move up to the Advanced Pattern Provider. The larger Advanced Extended Pattern Provider builds on the ME Extended Pattern Provider, and the pack changed its recipe. The pack also changed the recipes for the Advanced Pattern Provider Upgrade and for the Advanced Pattern Provider Capacity Upgrade, which is made in a Crystal Assembler.[11]

More storage options

Your AE2 storage components do more than go into regular cells. They also make ME DISK Drives, either through a full recipe or by combining a component with an ME DISK Housing. The same components go into experience storage cells, such as the 1k ME Experience Storage Cell.[11]

The storage quest "The Start of Digital Storage!" quest asks for an ME Drive, an item storage cell, a DISK drive and a Cell Workbench, so the two storage styles are introduced together. Quest a quest in "Storage" pairs the ME Storage Bus with several addon storage bus variants.[6]

Wireless terminals and cards

AE2's Wireless Receiver and Dense Energy Cell turn the pattern terminals into the Wireless Pattern Access Terminal and the Wireless Pattern Encoding Terminal. You can combine these with a Wireless Crafting Terminal. The Quantum Bridge Card uses AE2's quantum bridge parts, and the Magnet Card has a pack-changed recipe.[11]

Computers, diagnostics and other chapters

The ME Bridge links your network to computer peripherals, and its recipe is changed by the pack. For troubleshooting, the ME Network Analyzer is crafted from AE2 parts.[11]

AE2 items also appear in quests outside the storage chapter. "The Start of Automation" quest and "Auto-Build The Quantum Tunnel Upgrade" quest in the world engine chapter ask for the ME Quantum Ring and ME Quantum Link Chamber, and a creative-chapter quest, "Creative Energy Cell" quest, includes a Certus Quartz Crystal alongside items from other mods.[7][8]

Tip: Processing patterns let AE2 autocraft with almost any modded machine. Your pattern provider pushes the ingredients into the machine, and the network just waits for the result to come back.[15]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Applied Energistics 2?

4 parts

Applied Energistics 2 shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. Most of it sits in the logistics and storage chapter, which walks you from your first quartz all the way to autocrafting and quantum bridges. It also appears in the World Engine tier 3 chapter and in the creative chapter.[6][7][8]

Logistics and storage: getting started

The chain opens with "Digital Storage" quest, which asks for a Flawless Budding Certus Quartz. Next comes "Certus Quartz" quest, where you hand in Certus Quartz Dust and a Certus Quartz Crystal. From there the chapter splits into two branches.[6]

Building your ME network

After the processor quest you can do a quest in "Storage". It asks for an ME Storage Bus plus the tag, mod and precise storage bus variants from ExtendedAE. You can also do "Cables and Channels" quest, where any fluix cable works: Fluix ME Glass Cable, Fluix ME Covered Cable or Fluix ME Smart Cable. The cable quest is the big hub of the chapter and unlocks five quests at once.[6]

Autocrafting and wireless

The crafting unit quest branches into autocrafting. "The Autocrafting Multiblock" quest wants any crafting storage, from 1k Crafting Storage up to 256k Crafting Storage, plus a Crafting Co-Processing Unit. "Creating Patterns" quest asks for an ME Pattern Encoding Terminal and a Blank Pattern. That one leads to "Storing Patterns" quest, where you make an ME Pattern Provider and a Molecular Assembler.[6]

The crafting terminal quest leads to "Wireless Network Access" quest, which asks for an ME Wireless Access Point and a Wireless Crafting Terminal. The last quest in this line is "Quantum Network Bridges" quest. For that one you need a Quantum Entangled Singularity, an ME Quantum Link Chamber and an ME Quantum Ring.[6]

Your quantum bridge parts come back in the World Engine tier 3 chapter. "The Start of Automation" quest asks for an ME Quantum Ring, an ME Quantum Link Chamber and an ME Pattern Provider. "Auto-Build The Quantum Tunnel Upgrade" quest asks for the ring and link again. Both quests come after other quests in that chapter.[7]

In the creative chapter, "Creative Energy Cell" quest asks for a Certus Quartz Crystal along with items from several other mods, including MEGA Cells, Applied Flux, Mekanism and Avaritia.[8]

Which Applied Energistics 2 config options matter?

5 parts

Good news first: this pack leaves nearly all of AE2's numbers at the mod defaults, so most tutorials and wiki numbers will match your game. The settings below are the ones you're most likely to care about, plus a few client-side choices the pack ships that change how your terminals look.[19][26]

Channels

The channel setting is the one to know. general.channels controls the channel capacity your cables provide, and this pack sets it to X4. The allowed options are INFINITE, DEFAULT, X2, X3 and X4, so this pack uses the biggest multiplier option instead of turning channels off completely.[19]

Because channels aren't infinite, the channel system still limits how many devices a single cable can carry. You'll still want to plan your cable layout, just with a lot more room to work with.[1][19]

Unverified The exact number of channels each cable type carries under the X4 setting isn't documented in the sources for this section, so check a cable in-game before planning a big build around it.

Power

The pack sets client.powerUnit to FE, so AE2's screens show power in FE instead of AE. The underlying generation and cost values are all at mod defaults.[19][26]

Wireless and portable gear

  • Wireless access points have a base range of 16 with wireless.wirelessBaseRange and a base cost of 8. The booster range multiplier is 1 and the booster exponent is 1.5, all mod defaults.[19]
  • The wireless terminal's battery holds 1,600,000 with battery.wirelessTerminal. The drain multiplier is left at 1.[19]
  • Portable cells and the color applicator each hold 20,000. The matter cannon and entropy manipulator hold 200,000, and the charged staff holds 8,000.[19]
  • The charger runs at its normal speed. battery.chargerChargeRate is 1, where 2 would mean twice as fast.[19]

Handy toggles

Client defaults

The pack ships terminals in the TALL style with terminals.terminalStyle. It also shows a toast when long crafting jobs finish, pins items you auto-craft to the top of the terminal, and remembers your last search. Storage cell tooltips preview up to 5 content entries and show installed upgrades. AE2 uses its own search box by default, because search.useExternalSearch is off.[26]
