Mekanism Lasers is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 1.1.10.3-a. This mod adds laser additions, such as laser stopper, laser tires, and so mutch more (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Mekanism Lasers?

2 parts

Mekanism Lasers is an add-on that builds on Mekanism and can't run without it. It adds laser-based extras: laser doors, security systems, and lasers you can upgrade from basic to ultimate tiers. It also lets you build an infinite ore generator, so it isn't only a security mod.[1]

This pack ships version 1.1.10.3-a. The mod's own page says it is still under development and that a lot of features are yet to be added, so expect it to grow.[1][2]

Who it's for

If you already run Mekanism and want more from lasers, whether that's protecting your base or generating ore without mining, this is for you. The mod page recommends installing Jade and JEI alongside it for the best experience.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The main step is in the resource generation quest chapter. Quest "Generating Ores With Mek Lasers" quest asks for an Ore Generator plus one laser, and any of these tiers works: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser or Ultimate Laser.[3]

The mod also shows up late in the creative chapter. Quest "Creative Toggleable Laser" quest lists the Ultimate Toggleable Laser among its tasks. Quest "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest then asks for the Creative Toggleable Laser alongside creative items from other mods.[4]

That same creative-laser quest, a quest in "Backstage", also appears in the backrooms chapter, with the same list of creative items.[5]

How do you get started with Mekanism Lasers?

5 parts

Mekanism Lasers needs Mekanism to run, and it adds stronger laser tiers, laser-handling blocks and an ore generator. Here is the order I'd go in, so each thing you make feeds into the next.[1][6]

First, make a Basic Laser

Everything starts with the Basic Laser. It is the first laser tier (Basic, Advanced, Elite and Ultimate), and each later laser is crafted from the one below it.[7]

Next, add an Energy Transformer

The Energy Transformer converts laser light into energy. The pack's ore generator recipe needs one, so it is worth making early.[6][7]

Then, upgrade up to an Elite Laser

Upgrade your laser step by step: the Advanced Laser comes first, then the Elite Laser. You need to reach the Elite tier because the pack's ore generator recipe builds on it.[7]

Finally, build the Ore Generator

The Ore Generator uses light to convert energy into ores. In this pack its recipe is added by the pack itself, which is why the Energy Transformer and the Elite Laser come first. Quest "Generating Ores With Mek Lasers" quest in the resource generation chapter asks you for the generator plus a laser.[3][6][7]

This recipe is added by the pack, it is not the mod default.

Tip: That quest accepts a Basic, Advanced, Elite or Ultimate laser for its laser task, so whichever laser you have by then will do.[3]

Watch out: The pack changed the second recipe for the Advanced, Elite and Ultimate toggleable lasers, so do not assume the mod's default recipes for those.[7]

How does Mekanism Lasers work?

4 parts

Mekanism Lasers builds on Mekanism's own laser, so it needs Mekanism to run. It adds tiered lasers you can upgrade from basic to ultimate, plus blocks that interact with a beam: a stopper, a splitter, an energy transformer and an ore generator.[1][7]

Laser tiers and energy

There are four laser tiers: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser and Ultimate Laser. Each tier has an energy capacity and an energy use setting in the common config. The pack leaves all of these at the mod defaults.[6][8]

  • Basic: capacity 8,000,000 ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.basicLaserEnergyCap]]), use 30,000 ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.basicLaserEnergyUse]]).[8]
  • Advanced: capacity 32,000,000 ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.advancedLaserEnergyCap]]), use 120,000 ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.advancedLaserEnergyUse]]).[8]
  • Elite: capacity 128,000,000 ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.eliteLaserEnergyCap]]), use 480,000 ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.eliteLaserEnergyUse]]).[8]
  • Ultimate: capacity 512,000,000 ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ultimateLaserEnergyCap]]), use 1,920,000 ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ultimateLaserEnergyUse]]).[8]

Every step up the ladder multiplies both numbers by 4 (for example 30,000 for the basic laser against 120,000 for the advanced one), so a higher tier is a big jump in power, not a small one.[8]

Toggleable lasers and remote control

Each tier also has a toggleable version that can be switched on and off, such as the Basic Toggleable Laser and the Ultimate Toggleable Laser. The Interface Block is how you work with them: its description says you interface with toggleable lasers by placing a Remote Control.[6][7]

The pack changed the second recipe for the advanced, elite and ultimate toggleable lasers. These are the in-pack versions:[7]

Added by the pack.

The pack made the generator much faster and cheaper than the mod default. Its cooldown ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorCooldown]]) is 0.5 seconds, where the mod default is 4. The energy cost of fabricating an ore ([[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorFabricationCost]]) is 50,000, where the mod default is 16,000,000.[8]

Each cycle gives you 1 ore, set by [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorNumberOfOres]], which is the mod default.[8]

Not every ore can come out. The [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.blacklistedOres]] list blocks some raw ores from the justdirethings namespace, including its raw coal ores. It also blocks many stone and deepslate ores from ftbmaterials, such as the apatite, bauxite, iridium and titanium ones. If an ore never shows up, check that list first.[8]

How do you progress through Mekanism Lasers?

5 parts

Lasers in this pack climb a ladder: Basic, Advanced, Elite and Ultimate. Each step is crafted from the laser one tier below it, so you can't skip ahead. You start with the Basic Laser and work up to the Ultimate Laser.[7]

The four laser tiers

The Basic Laser is the entry point. It is built from Mekanism's own Laser plus basic-tier materials.[7]

Quests

The resource generation chapter has a quest, "Generating Ores With Mek Lasers" quest, that asks for an Ore Generator and a laser. The laser can be any of the Basic, Advanced, Elite or Ultimate Laser.[3]

In the creative chapter, "Creative Toggleable Laser" quest asks you to hand in an Ultimate Toggleable Laser, along with several items from other mods. That quest comes before "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest, which asks for the Creative Toggleable Laser along with creative items from other mods. The thebackrooms chapter has a matching quest, a quest in "Backstage", with the same task list.[4][5]

How does Mekanism Lasers work with other mods?

3 parts

Mekanism Lasers is an add-on: it cannot run without Mekanism, so that's the mod it connects with most. Beyond that, the pack ties it into a few other mods through crafting recipes and quests.[1]

Mekanism

The basic building blocks of this mod are made from Mekanism parts. The Basic Laser is crafted from Mekanism's Laser, and that is a regular mod recipe, not a pack change.[7]

Industrial Foregoing

The Fluid Laser Base is the one place where this mod feeds into another mod's machine. Its recipe is changed by the pack and needs the Energy Transformer from this mod. It also uses the Energy Processor and the Fortron-Infused Ingot, so you pull in parts from several mods at once.[7]

Quests

In the creative chapter, quest "Creative Toggleable Laser" quest asks for the Ultimate Toggleable Laser alongside items from other mods, including a Mekanism energy cube, an Immersive Engineering component, a Cataclysm ingot and an FTB Materials ingot.[4]

The Creative Toggleable Laser shows up in quests "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest and a quest in "Backstage". Both are creative-item collections, with items from Ars Nouveau, Create, MFFS, Replication and other mods. The first is in the creative chapter and the second is in the backrooms chapter.[4][5]

The resource generation chapter has quest "Generating Ores With Mek Lasers" quest. It asks for the Ore Generator together with a laser of any tier, from Basic to Ultimate.[3]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Mekanism Lasers?

3 parts

Mekanism Lasers appears in the quest chapters resource_generation, creative and thebackrooms. None of these quests have a title in the pack files, so they are identified only by their IDs below.[3][4][5]

Resource generation

This is the chapter where the mod is the whole point of the quest. Quest "Generating Ores With Mek Lasers" quest asks for the Ore Generator and a laser. The laser task accepts any of Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser or Ultimate Laser, so you don't need the top tier to complete it. The quest data lists no prerequisite quest for it.[3]

Creative chapter

In the creative chapter the toggleable lasers are part of a longer chain, and the order is clear from the quest dependencies.[4]

  1. Quest "Creative Toggleable Laser" quest comes first. It asks for the Ultimate Toggleable Laser, Ultimate Energy Cube, Ignitium Ingot, Steel Mechanical Component and Refined Obsidian Ingot. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the chapter.[4]
  2. Quest "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest comes later. Its tasks include the Creative Toggleable Laser alongside creative items from other mods, such as Creative Motor and Creative Source Jar. It has a long list of prerequisite quests, and "Creative Toggleable Laser" quest is one of them.[4]

The Backrooms

Quest a quest in "Backstage" in the thebackrooms chapter has the same task list as "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest, including the Creative Toggleable Laser. It unlocks after a single earlier quest.[4][5]

Which Mekanism Lasers config options matter?

3 parts

Mekanism Lasers keeps all its settings in one file, and in this pack only two of them differ from the mod's defaults. Both belong to the ore generator, so if you're building an infinite ore setup, these are the ones to know.[1][8]

Values the pack changed

  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorCooldown]] is the cooldown of the ore generator in seconds. The pack sets it to 0.5, where the mod default is 4, so the generator cycles much faster.[8]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorFabricationCost]] is the energy cost of fabricating ore. The pack sets it to 50,000, where the mod default is 16,000,000. That makes ore fabrication far cheaper than it would be in a plain install.[8]

[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorNumberOfOres]] controls how many ores you get from one cycle. The pack leaves it at 1, the same as the mod default.[8]

Ore blacklist

[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.blacklistedOres]] is the list of ores the generator is not allowed to produce. In this pack it includes the raw ores from Just Dire Things (ferricore, blazegold, celestigem, eclipsealloy and the four coal tiers). It also includes the stone and deepslate ores from FTB Materials, such as antimony, apatite, bauxite, cinnabar, iridium, monazite, titanium and tungsten, plus deepslate quartz.[8]

Unverified The sources do not say whether the blacklist differs from the mod's default list, so it is unconfirmed whether the pack added these entries.

Laser tiers: energy capacity and use

The laser tiers all keep their mod default values in this pack. Here is the energy capacity for each tier.[8]

  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.basicLaserEnergyCap]]: 8,000,000[8]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.advancedLaserEnergyCap]]: 32,000,000[8]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.eliteLaserEnergyCap]]: 128,000,000[8]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ultimateLaserEnergyCap]]: 512,000,000[8]

The energy use values are also unchanged from the defaults, and each tier uses about four times as much as the one before it.[8]

  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.basicLaserEnergyUse]]: 30,000[8]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.advancedLaserEnergyUse]]: 120,000[8]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.eliteLaserEnergyUse]]: 480,000[8]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.ultimateLaserEnergyUse]]: 1,920,000[8]

Unverified The sources do not state the unit or timing of the energy use values, such as per tick or per activation.

What changed in Mekanism Lasers between versions?

2 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Mekanism Lasers 1.1.10.3-a, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]

1.1.10.2

  • Added the Energy Transformator, which converts lasers into usable energy.[9]

1.1.10.3-a (the version in this pack)

  • Fixed an issue where lasers would toggle when you added them to or removed them from your remote.[10]
  • Added a multiblock structure that will be changing the ore generator. The changelog says more tiers of it are planned.[10]
  • All lasers are described as 4x better than the previous ones.[10]

The author notes that this update came after a while without uploads, so it bundles several changes at once.[10]
