What is Ars Elemental?

1 part

Ars Elemental is in this pack at version 0.7.10.1, built for Minecraft 1.21.1. The pack's quest book has no chapter of its own for it. It shows up as an item in quests inside other chapters.[1]

Where it shows up in the quest book

So the Mark of Mastery is the mod's item that the quest book asks for in both the Bounty Board and Creative chapters, and the Flashing Archwood Sapling is a valid pick for the World Engine Tier 1 quest.[2][3][4]

Unverified The sources here do not show whether the ATM Star path uses this mod, so I can't tell you either way. They also include no in-jar guidebook for it, so check in-game for what the mod adds beyond these quest items.

How do you get started with Ars Elemental?

4 parts

Ars Elemental sits on top of Ars Nouveau: the recipes for its items use Ars Nouveau essences and gear. So the first steps are about two things: getting the Flashing Archwood tree, and crafting the Mark of Mastery. Here is the order I'd go in.[5]

Step one: get a Flashing Archwood Sapling

Flashing Archwood is this mod's own archwood. Its log is used in several rituals, such as Detection, Repulsion and Fast Squirrels, so you'll want a steady supply of Flashing Archwood Log. The sapling also counts for the quest "Magical Trees" quest in the World Engine Tier 1 chapter, where it is one of the accepted archwood saplings.[4][5]

The first way to get the Flashing Archwood Sapling is to craft it from the other archwood saplings and an Air Essence:[5]

A shapeless crafting recipe that combines the other archwood saplings.

You don't have to collect every other sapling first. There is also a Farming for Blockheads market recipe for the sapling, and the pack adds a crook recipe that turns Flashing Archwood Leaves into a sapling and a Flashpine.[5]

    Crook (ftbstuff)

This crook recipe is added by the pack.

Step two: craft the Mark of Mastery

This is the key item of the mod. The Mark of Mastery is an imbuement recipe, not a normal crafting table recipe. The mod's advancement describes it as combining the essences with the tribute.[5][6]

It's worth making early because it shows up in the pack's quests: "Marks of Mastery Trade" quest in the bounty_board chapter asks for it, and so does "Creative Spellbook" quest in the creative chapter.[2][3]

Step three: upgrade to a major focus

Once you have a Mark, a major focus is a good next goal. The Focus of Air is made at the enchanting apparatus by upgrading a Lesser Focus of Air with a Mark of Mastery.[5]

    A cheap early pickup

If you want a quick win, the Trinkets Pouch (Trinkets Pouch) is a simple shaped crafting recipe and has its own advancement.[5][6]

    A shaped crafting recipe.

Tip: The elemental armor sets are a good long-term goal. For example, the air set highly reduces fall damage. The armor upgrade recipes use the Mark of Mastery too, so making one early pays off later.[5][6]

    How does Ars Elemental work?

    7 parts

Ars Elemental is mostly about spells, gear and a few source-powered items, so the mechanics below come from the pack's config files and recipes. Where the pack changed a value from the mod default, I say so.[5][7]

    How glyph settings work

Each Ars Elemental glyph has its own file in config/ars_elemental, and the files share most of their keys. You get the glyph's mana cost, its tier, how many times it can appear in one spell, and a starter-glyph switch. There are also lists for augment limits, augment cost overrides and glyphs it cannot be combined with. Some glyphs add extra keys such as damage, amplify, extend time or maximum lifespan. When a glyph feels too cheap or too strong, its own file is the first place to look.[8][9][10]

Cavitate is a glyph the pack retuned. Its damage is set to 6 (mod default 8) and its amplify value to 1 (mod default 3). Its cost of 80, extend time of 8 seconds and potion time of 30 seconds are still the mod defaults.[8]

    Glyph values in this pack

    • Homing Projectile: cost 75, tier 3, and the projectile lives at most 30 seconds. Its config limits it to 1 Pierce and 1 Dampen.[11]
    • Glyph Arc Projectile: cost 10, tier 2, and a maximum lifespan of 60 seconds.[10][12]
    • Glyph Propagator Arc costs 150 and is tier 2. The homing propagator costs 400 and is tier 3.[12][13][14]
    • Conflagrate: cost 80, tier 3, damage 9, amplify 5. Its config limits it to 2 Amplify augments.[9]
    • Water Jet: cost 80, tier 3, damage 4, amplify 1, and the Split augment costs 40 when used on it. Geyser: cost 40, tier 2, extend time 1 second, potion time 5 seconds.[15][16]
    • Conjure Terrain: cost 20, tier 1, limited to 2 Amplify and 1 Randomize.[17]
    • Nullify Defense is the expensive one: cost 1000, tier 3.[18]
    • Other costs: Mist 40, Slip Feet 20, Rage 100, Summon Bee 100, Summon Slime 100, and Cauterize 80 with damage 3.[19][20][21][22][23][24]
    • The aerial, aquatic, fiery, insect, summon and undead filters all cost 0 and are tier 1.[25][26][27][28][29][30]
    • The "not" versions of those filters also cost 0 and are tier 1.[31][32][33][34][35][36]

Unverified The glyph configs for Oxidize, Life Link, Phantom Grasp, Envenom, Charm, Discharge, Spark, Watery Grave, Poison Spores, Bubble Shield and Spike exist in config/ars_elemental (for example glyph_charm.toml and glyph_life_link.toml), but the sources here do not show their values.

    Unlocking and crafting glyphs

This pack has a script for its glyph codex items. Right-click one and it uses up one codex and unlocks a random glyph you don't know yet, picked by weight. If you already know every glyph in that tier's pool, you get 55 experience points instead. Ars Elemental glyphs sit in all three codex tiers with a weight of 3 each, slightly rarer than most Ars Nouveau entries. Tier 1 holds the creature filters. Tier 2 has Glyph Arc Projectile, Glyph Charm and Glyph Propagator Arc, plus Bubble Shield, Discharge, Envenom, Phantom Grasp, Poison Spores, Spike and Watery Grave. Tier 3 has Homing Projectile, Conflagrate, Glyph Life Link, Nullify Defense and the homing propagator.[12]

You can also craft glyphs. Here is the arc propagator:[5]

    Glyph (ars_nouveau)

    Recipe id: ars_elemental:glyph_propagator_arc

    Foci, armor and mana

A lesser focus discounts the matching spell cost by 0.15 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_less_focus_discount]]), and a greater focus by 0.25 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_maj_focus_discount]]). Both are the mod defaults. Each elemental armor piece adds 100 max mana and 4 mana regen, also defaults. Glyph empowering and the focus regen bonus are both switched on.[7]

Armor sets work in tiers. Two or more set pieces give a set bonus, and four pieces of the same element give the school bonus. For example, air armor absorbs some air-related damage and highly reduces fall damage. Light and medium armor each add an effect after absorbing damage from their element, and it lasts only for a short time: light gives a higher spell crit chance, medium gives a mana discount. Heavy armor converts some of the absorbed damage into mana. Hold the key shown in the item tooltip for the set details.[6]

The pack changed the Lesser Focus of Air recipe. The full Focus of Air is crafted as an upgrade of the lesser one.[5]

    Source costs and shrines

Some items spend source when they work. The Slipstream Current Elevator elevator uses 10 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.airElevatorCost]]). The magmatic and bubble elevators cost 0, and the water urn uses 100. These are all mod defaults. The pack changed the air elevator recipe.[5][7]

Slipstream Current ElevatorChanged by the pack

    Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

    Recipe id: ars_elemental:air_upstream

Siren shrines use source too. A mermaid consumes 1000 source per generation ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidManaCost]]). It needs 30 channels before it produces loot, and a cycle yields at most 5 items. A high mood can add up to 2 extra item rolls. All of these are mod defaults.[7]

    Lenses and other limits

A chain lens can add up to 15 glyphs to a projectile, counting the ones already on it, and a piercing lens can apply up to 10 Pierce. Both are mod defaults. Here is the Acceleration Prism Lens:[5][7]

    Imbuement (ars_nouveau)

    Recipe id: ars_elemental:acceleration_prism_lens

A few smaller rules are worth knowing. The homing nerf is off, so homing is not limited to glowing mobs. A Flarecannon killed by its owner dies and drops its charm instead of deactivating. The Squirrel Ritual buff refreshes every 600 ticks. Wandering mages target players unless you wear the focus of their school.[7]

    Flashing archwood

Lightning still strikes often in flashing archwood biomes, because the always-thunder option is on. Flashing leaves and wood give off light level 6, and stripped flashing wood gives 8.[7][37]

In this pack, yellow archwood leaves broken with a crook can drop a yellow archwood sapling (0.35 chance) or a Flashpine (0.2 chance). The pack also adds an Immersive Engineering cloche recipe that grows Flashpine:[5][38]

    FlashpineAdded by the pack

    Cloche (immersiveengineering)

    Recipe id: ftb:cloche/flashpine_pod_from_goosoil_tier1

The pack sets the extra-biomes option to 0 (mod default 1), which turns off the archwood forests with specific trees. The Conjure Island: Archwood Forest ritual item still has a recipe:[5][7]

    Crafting Shapeless

    Recipe id: ars_elemental:ritual_archwood_forest

How do you progress through Ars Elemental?

    4 parts

Ars Elemental in this pack builds on top of Ars Nouveau. The path below follows what the quests and in-pack recipes show: Flashing Archwood first, then the utility gear, then the Mark of Mastery, which the elemental foci and armor upgrades use.[2][3][4][5]

    Archwood and the Flashing Sapling

The first Ars Elemental item on the quest path is the Flashing Archwood Sapling. The quest "Magical Trees" quest in the World Engine Tier 1 chapter accepts any one of the blue, red, purple or green Ars Nouveau archwood saplings or this one, plus archwood planks. So the Flashing Sapling is optional for that quest, but it is the one that comes from this mod.[4]

Crafted shapeless from the blue, green, purple and red Ars Nouveau archwood saplings plus Air Essence.

There are other routes in this pack. A market recipe produces the sapling directly, and the pack adds a crook recipe that turns Flashing Archwood Leaves into Flashpine and another sapling, so you can keep the supply going.[5]

    Crook (ftbstuff)

This crook recipe is added by the pack.

The Flashing Archwood Log is also the base for several rituals: Detection, Repulsion, Fast Squirrels and Zapping. Other rituals, such as Attraction and Pollination, use the Ars Nouveau Flourishing Archwood Log instead.[5]

    Utility gear

The Advanced Spell Prism and the Trinkets Pouch are crafted at the crafting table. The lenses Arc Prism Lens, Acceleration Prism Lens and Deceleration Prism Lens are made by imbuement, while Chaining Prism Lens is made at the enchanting apparatus.[5]

Some of the gear was changed by the pack, so don't rely on the mod's default recipes. The pack alters the recipes for the Enchanter's Bangle, the Spellcaster Bag and the Slipstream Current Elevator. The elemental bangles, such as Air Bangle and Earth Bangle, are built on top of the Enchanter's Bangle.[5]

    Mark of Mastery

The Mark of Mastery is the key item for the elemental upgrades. It is made by imbuement, and it appears as a quest task in two places: "Marks of Mastery Trade" quest in the Bounty Board chapter, and "Creative Spellbook" quest in the Creative chapter, where it sits alongside the Archmage Spell Book and an Amethyst Singularity.[2][3][5]

    Elemental foci and armor

Once you have Marks of Mastery, you can start upgrading. The Focus of Air is an upgrade of the Lesser Focus of Air, and the Air Infused Turret builds on it.[5]

Each Ars Nouveau armor line has an elemental counterpart, made by upgrading the matching piece with a Mark of Mastery, an element essence and a netherite ingot. For air, the Arcanist line becomes Aethermancer's gear (for example Aethermancer's Hat and Aethermancer's Boots), the Sorcerer line becomes Olympian's gear (Olympian's Hood), and the Battlemage line becomes Thunderguard's gear (Thunderguard's Helmet). Water follows the same pattern with the Aquamancer's, Nereid's and Winterguard's sets (Aquamancer's Hat, Nereid's Hood, Winterguard's Helmet). Earth works the same way, for example Geomancer's Boots and Wealdguard's Boots.[5]

    Armor Upgrade (sauce)

    Recipe id: ars_elemental:air_boots

The aqua and earth boots follow the same upgrade pattern: swap the base piece and the essence to match.

Tip: Stock up on Marks of Mastery before you start on armor, because every armor upgrade recipe shown for air, water and earth uses one.[5]

How does Ars Elemental work with other mods?

    5 parts

Ars Elemental is an add-on to Ars Nouveau, so almost every in-pack recipe for it pulls in Ars Nouveau items. A few vanilla items and one quest with an Avaritia item show up as well. Here is what the recipes and quests in this pack show.[3][5]

    Ars Nouveau is the backbone

The elemental armor sets are upgrades of Ars Nouveau armor, not new crafts from scratch. Aethermancer's Boots upgrade Arcanist's Treads, and the Thunderguard line upgrades the Battlemage pieces. The Olympian line upgrades the Sorcerer pieces. The same pattern repeats for the fire, water and earth sets. Each upgrade also needs Mark of Mastery, the matching Ars Nouveau essence and a netherite ingot. Here is one example.[5]

    Armor Upgrade (sauce)

    Recipe id: ars_elemental:air_boots

The other armor pieces follow the same pattern with a different base armor piece and essence.

The Ars Nouveau source relays get elemental variants as well. They are made at the enchanting apparatus with the matching essence and a diamond.[5]

The air, earth and fire turrets are imbued versions of the Enchanted Spell Turret, each using its matching focus and essence. The elemental bangles start from the Enchanter's Bangle. Advanced Spell Prism upgrades the Spell Prism, and the Acceleration, Arc and Deceleration prism lenses are imbued from Ars Nouveau and Ars Elemental glyphs together with Manipulation Essence. The Chaining Prism Lens uses a Source Gem Block. Even Trinkets Pouch starts from Magebloom Fiber.[5]

    Recipes the pack changed

Some Ars Elemental recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on the mod's default recipes for them. These are Slipstream Current Elevator, Enchanter's Bangle, Spellcaster Bag and Flashjack Charm. They build on Ars Nouveau items such as Wilden Wing, Ring of Potential and Manipulation Essence. Here is the Slipstream Current Elevator as the pack has it.[5]

    Archwood and flight

The Flashing Archwood Sapling is crafted from Ars Nouveau archwood saplings together with Air Essence, as the recipe below shows. There is also an alternative recipe for Ars Nouveau's Flight that uses the Flashing Archwood Log.[5]

Vanilla items and a new glyph

Vanilla items turn up in several Ars Elemental recipes, including Piston, Cobweb, Fire Charge, Magma Block, Netherite Scrap and Prismarine Shard. The Aerial Filter glyph also brings together Ars Nouveau's Item Scroll: Allow and Phantom Membrane. The recipes below show the exact in-pack versions.[5]

    Quests

Mark of Mastery appears as a quest task in two places. One is in the bounty board chapter: "Marks of Mastery Trade" quest. The other is in the creative chapter: "Creative Spellbook" quest. The creative quest asks for it together with Archmage Spell Book and Amethyst Singularity, which is the one place in the quest sources here where Ars Elemental meets Avaritia. These quests have no titles or descriptions in the sources.[2][3]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Ars Elemental?

    4 parts

Ars Elemental appears in the Bounty Board, Creative and World Engine Tier 1 quest chapters. In each one it supplies only part of what you hand in. The quests have no titles of their own, so you find them by their ids.[2][3][4]

    Bounty Board

Quest "Marks of Mastery Trade" quest in the Bounty Board chapter has a single task: hand in a Mark of Mastery. It unlocks only after you finish the earlier quests it depends on in that chapter.[2]

    Creative

Quest "Creative Spellbook" quest in the Creative chapter also asks for a Mark of Mastery. Its other tasks are an Archmage Spell Book from Ars Nouveau and an Amethyst Singularity from Avaritia. It follows earlier quests in that chapter.[3]

    World Engine Tier 1

Quest "Magical Trees" quest in the World Engine Tier 1 chapter first accepts any one of several archwood saplings: the blue, red, purple or green ones from Ars Nouveau, or Ars Elemental's Flashing Archwood Sapling. So the Ars Elemental sapling is only one option here. A second task asks for Archwood Planks. The quest unlocks after earlier quests in its chapter.[4]

    Order

Inside each chapter, a quest only unlocks once the quests listed before it are complete. The quest sources here do not show how these chapters relate to each other, so they do not tell you which of these quests you reach first.[2][3][4]

Which Ars Elemental config options matter?

    3 parts

Most of Ars Elemental's config in this pack sits at the mod's defaults. The sources show only a few values the pack changed, and those are the ones worth knowing about.[7][8]

    Values the pack changed

    • Misc.extra_biomes is 0 in this pack, while the mod default is 1. The option's description says to set it over 0 to enable archwood forests with specific trees.[7]
    • general.damage is 6 in this pack, down from the mod default of 8.[8]
    • general.amplify is 1 in this pack, down from the mod default of 3.[8]

    Augment limits

A few glyphs have augment limits filled in, while most others leave that list empty. Here is how they are set in this pack.[9][11][17]

    Defaults that matter in play

These are all at the mod default in this pack, so you can plan around them without surprises.[7]

    • Elevators: [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.airElevatorCost]] is 10 source for the slipstream elevator. [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.lavaElevatorCost]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.waterElevatorCost]] are both 0, so the magmatic and bubble elevators cost no source. The water urn ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.waterUrnCost]]) uses 100.[7]
    • Spell foci: the lesser focus discounts matching spell cost by 0.15 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_less_focus_discount]]) and the greater focus by 0.25 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_maj_focus_discount]]).[7]
    • Armor: each elemental armor piece gives a mana regen bonus of 4 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Armors.armorManaRegen]]) and a max mana bonus of 100 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Armors.armorMaxMana]]).[7]
    • Lenses: a chain lens can add up to 15 glyphs to a projectile (Misc.chainLensLimit), and a piercing lens can apply up to 10 pierce (Misc.pierceLensLimit).[7]
    • Siren shrines: each generation consumes 1,000 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidManaCost]]). A shrine needs 30 channels before it produces loot ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidMaxProgress]]) and can produce at most 5 items per cycle ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidQuantityCap]]).[7]
    • Wandering mages: Mobs-Disabled.magesAggro is true, so they target you unless you wear the focus of their school.[7]
    • Homing: Misc.homing_nerf is false, so the restriction to glowing mobs is off.[7]
    • The Homing projectile glyph costs 75 (general.cost) and its projectile lasts at most 30 seconds (general.max_lifespan).[11]
    • Thunder: Misc.always_thunder is true, so lightning keeps crashing often in flashing archwood biomes. Set it to false to disable that.[7]
Tip: The two client options, [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable BlackBookTexture]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable SpellFocusRender]], are both on. They control the black upgraded spell book texture and the rendering of the equipped spell focus, so turn them off if you'd rather not see those.[39]
