FTB Stuff & Things is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 21.1.19. A collection of useful little machines and blocks (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is FTB Stuff & Things?

1 part

FTB Stuff & Things adds early-game tools and simple machines to the pack: hammers, a crook, a wooden basin, cobblestone generators, auto-hammers and the SlowMelter 9000. This pack ships version 21.1.19. You will meet its items in the quest book very early, starting in the Getting Started chapter.[1][2][3]

Where the quest book places it

The mod has no chapter of its own. Its items are spread across three chapters: Getting Started, Resource Generation and Technology.[2][3][4]

In short, the quest book has you start with hand tools, move on to automated cobblestone and hammering, and reach the SlowMelter 9000 in the Technology chapter.[2][3][4]

Unverified Whether the ATM Star quest path uses this mod is not shown by the sources here, so this overview does not place it on that path.

How do you get started with FTB Stuff & Things?

5 parts

The early game in this pack runs through FTB Stuff & Things. The quest book's getting_started chapter walks you through the first tools, so here is the order those quests point you in, and why each step matters.[2]

Stone Hammer

Your first target is the Stone Hammer. Its quest, "From Punching To Smashing" quest, also asks you to have gravel and dirt. Hammers crush materials down to their core components, and the pack has its own recipe for this one.[2][5]

Stone Crook and Wooden Basin

Two more early quests ask for the Stone Crook ("A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest) and the Wooden Basin ("Don't Forget To Stomp" quest).[2]

The basin's JEI info says to place a block on top of the basin and fall or jump on it.[5]

Turn sand into Dust

Next, "More Smashing" quest asks for sand and Dust. Hammering sand gives you Dust. The pack also adds sand to Dust recipes for crushing machines from other mods, so you won't be hammering by hand forever.[2][6]

Iron Hammer

The Iron Hammer is the next upgrade, and "Proving Yourself" quest asks for it. That quest only unlocks after two earlier quests are done.[2]

Cobble Generator and Auto-Hammer

The last quest in the chapter, "Cobble Generators" quest, asks for a lava bucket, a cobblestone generator of any tier and an auto-hammer of any tier. The pack added the recipe for the Stone Cobble Generator.[2][6]

How does FTB Stuff & Things work?

3 parts

The sources for this mod only cover a few of its systems. I can tell you what the machines are described as doing and how the compressed block chain works. Power use, fluid handling and automation details are not in what I have, so I leave them out.[5][6]

Machines

  • The Fusing Machine is described as being used to fuse items together to produce new results.[5]
  • The Super Cooler is described as being used to "super"-cool items to produce new results.[5]
  • The recipe viewer info for the Wooden Basin says to place a block on top of the basin and then fall or jump on it.[5]
  • Hammers have a tooltip saying they crush materials down to their core components.[5]

There is also an advancement about over-winding a Pump and suffering the consequences. That tells you the mod has a Pump you can push too far, but the sources don't explain how winding works or what the consequences are.[5]

Compressed blocks

The pack has a family of compressed blocks. Each material comes in a compressed, a double compressed and a triple compressed form. The materials are basalt, clay, cobblestone, dirt, dust and end stone. For example, you start with Compressed Cobblestone, step up to Double Compressed Cobblestone, and finish at Triple Compressed Cobblestone.[6]

The first step turns the plain material into the first compressed form with a shaped crafting recipe. The vanilla basalt, clay, cobblestone, dirt and end stone blocks work this way, and the dust version starts from Dust. Another shaped recipe takes the compressed form to the double form, and one more takes the double form to the triple form.[6]

Stepping back down

Each form also has a shapeless recipe that goes the other way. Triple compressed turns into double compressed, and double compressed turns into the first compressed form. The dump shows these for every material. Here is the cobblestone example.[6]

The same pattern covers Compressed Basalt, Compressed Clay, Compressed Dirt, Compressed Dust and Compressed End Stone with their double and triple forms.[6]

Tip: The recipe list I have is cut off, with 97 more recipes not shown. Open the recipe viewer in-game to see everything else this mod adds.[6]

How do you progress through FTB Stuff & Things?

6 parts

Progression with this mod in the pack is a ladder of tools and machines. You start with a hammer, work up through metal tiers, and end with automation. The quests give you the milestones, and the pack's recipes tell you how to reach each one.[2][6]

Tier 1: Stone tools and your first Dust

The first quests in the getting started chapter ask for a Stone Hammer along with some gravel and dirt ("From Punching To Smashing" quest), and a Stone Crook ("A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest). Both recipes use a Stone Rod. The pack's hammer recipe is below, followed by the crook.[2][6]

Tier 2: The Iron Hammer

The Iron Hammer has its own quest ("Proving Yourself" quest). The pack's recipe uses a Stone Rod, a stick and an iron ingot.[2][6]

Once you have Dust, you can get more of it from machines. The pack adds sand-to-Dust recipes for Create (crushing and milling), Ender IO, Immersive Engineering, Mekanism and Oritech. It also adds a roost recipe that produces Dust.[6]

Cobble generators

The big goal of the getting started chapter is "Cobble Generators" quest. It asks for a lava bucket, a cobblestone generator of any tier from stone up to diamond, and an auto-hammer of any tier from iron up to netherite. The stone generator uses a pack-added recipe, and it takes a Compressed Stone as one of its ingredients.[2][6]

The pack has you upgrade the generators with molten metal. Molten iron turns the Stone Cobble Generator into the Iron Cobble Generator. Molten gold takes that one to the Gold Cobble Generator, and molten diamond finishes the line with the Diamond Cobble Generator. Each step has a pack-added casting recipe, plus a supercooler recipe that does the same job.[6]

Auto-hammers

Each auto-hammer is built from the matching hand hammer. The Iron Auto-Hammer starts from the Iron Hammer. The Gold Auto-Hammer needs the Gold Hammer and the Iron Auto-Hammer. The Diamond Auto-Hammer needs the Diamond Hammer and the Gold Auto-Hammer. The Netherite Auto-Hammer needs the Netherite Hammer and the Diamond Auto-Hammer. All four also use redstone dust, glass, gold and iron.[6]

Compressed blocks

The mod has compressed versions of cobblestone, dirt, gravel, sand, red sand, clay, basalt, netherrack, end stone and dust. Each comes in three levels: Compressed, Double Compressed and Triple Compressed. You craft each level from the one below it in a crafting grid, and a shapeless recipe turns it back down. Hammers also break compressed sand and red sand down into Dust.[6]

Beyond the hammer line

The resource generation chapter has a quest asking for a decorated pot and one of dirt, sand, mud or Dust ("The Archaeologist" quest). The technology chapter asks for the SlowMelter 9000 and a foundry tap ("The SlowMelter 9000" quest).[3][4]

How does FTB Stuff & Things work with other mods?

5 parts

FTB Stuff & Things mostly stands on its own, but this pack ties it into other mods through its own recipes and quests. These are the connections the sources confirm.[3][6]

Cobble generator upgrades with molten metals

The pack adds a chain of supercooler-type recipes that upgrade your cobble generators one tier at a time. Each step combines the previous generator with a molten metal from Productive Metalworks. The chain runs from the Stone Cobble Generator up to the Netherite Cobble Generator. Here is each step.[6]

Fusing machine and Super Cooler

The SlowMelter 9000 and the "Super" Cooler each have a pack-added custom machine recipe that uses items from other mods. The sources list no output for either recipe, so I can't tell you what they produce. The recipe blocks below show them exactly.[6]

The fusing machine also appears in the technology quest chapter. Quest "The SlowMelter 9000" quest asks for it together with the Productive Metalworks Foundry Tap.[3]

Dust from a chicken

If you'd rather not work for Dust by hand, the pack has a Chicken Roost recipe where the Dust Chicken produces it. The input is any seed in the tier 2 or up tag.[6]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use FTB Stuff & Things?

4 parts

The mod's items show up in three quest chapters: getting_started, resource_generation and technology. The quests are untitled in the pack files, so they're listed below by their quest refs.[2][3][4]

Getting Started

This is where most of the mod's quests are. Two of them unlock after the same earlier quest. "From Punching To Smashing" quest asks for a Stone Hammer, gravel and dirt. "A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest asks for a Stone Crook.[2]

"Don't Forget To Stomp" quest asks for a Wooden Basin and comes after a different earlier quest.[2]

"More Smashing" quest and "Proving Yourself" quest both come after the same earlier quest. The first asks for sand and Dust. The second asks for an Iron Hammer and has one more prerequisite quest on top of the shared one.[2]

"Cobble Generators" quest has three tasks: a lava bucket, a cobblestone generator and an auto-hammer. For the generator, any one of these counts: Stone Cobble Generator, Iron Cobble Generator, Gold Cobble Generator or Diamond Cobble Generator. For the auto-hammer, any one of Iron Auto-Hammer, Gold Auto-Hammer, Diamond Auto-Hammer or Netherite Auto-Hammer works.[2]

Resource Generation

"The Archaeologist" quest asks for a decorated pot plus one of dirt, sand, mud or Dust. It unlocks after the same earlier quest as the cobble generator and auto-hammer quest above.[2][4]

Technology

"The SlowMelter 9000" quest asks for the SlowMelter 9000 and a foundry tap. The pack file lists no prerequisite quest for it.[3]

Order

The earlier quests these depend on don't use this mod's items, so the full order isn't visible from these files. What is visible is the sharing: "From Punching To Smashing" quest and "A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest share a prerequisite, "More Smashing" quest and "Proving Yourself" quest share another, and "Cobble Generators" quest and "The Archaeologist" quest share a third.[2][4]
