MEGA Cells is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 4.11.0. ME Greater Accumulation: For when kilobytes just won't do. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is MEGA Cells?

3 parts

MEGA Cells is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2 that adds higher storage tiers, from 1M up to 256M capacity. It also adds some specialised cells and extra tools. This pack includes version 4.11.0, so it's for you once your ME network is outgrowing standard AE2 cells.[1][2]

What you get

  • Bulk Item Cell: it holds only one item type, but with no practical upper limit. It needs its own Netherite housing, and you have to partition it before it works.[3]
  • MEGA crafting CPU parts: larger storage tiers for crafting CPUs, plus a MEGA coprocessor that gives four coprocessing threads per block.[4]
  • MEGA Pattern Provider: it holds 18 patterns, double the usual capacity, but only processing patterns.[4]
  • MEGA Interface: a double-capacity version of the standard interface, with twice the slots, I/O and throughput.[5]
  • Smaller extras: the Portable Cell Workbench and the ME Cell Dock, a flat cable part that holds one storage cell.[5]

Energy storage

The Superdense Energy Cell holds up to 12.8 million AE per cell, which is 8 times a Dense Energy Cell and 64 times a standard one. It's aimed at big Spatial IO setups, and it's also used to craft the Greater Energy Card for wireless gear.[6]

The cell also appears as a task in quest "Creative Energy Cell" quest in the "creative" chapter. That quest also asks for several other items from different mods.[7]

Where it fits in progression

Everything starts with Sky Steel alloy ingots, which are made from Iron and other materials, and a much hotter fluid than water is needed to melt and transform them. With Sky Steel you can assemble the Accumulation Processor, which is the backbone of almost every MEGA device. After that, the rest of the add-on opens up.[2]

Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack changes any MEGA Cells recipes or values, so check each recipe in the later sections before you rely on it.

How do you get started with MEGA Cells?

5 parts

MEGA Cells is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2 that adds storage tiers from 1M up to 256M, plus some specialised cells and extra tools. Everything in it grows out of one new material and one new processor, so that's where you start.[2]

First, get Sky Steel

Sky Steel is an alloy ingot made together with Iron, and water won't cut it for the metalwork. You need a much hotter fluid to melt things down and transform them. The guide text for the pack doesn't show the exact Sky Steel recipe here, so check it in-game before you plan your setup.[2]

Then make the Accumulation Processor

Once you have Sky Steel, assemble the Accumulation Processor. It's the backbone of almost every MEGA device, including the larger cells and the specialised tools. Make a few, because you'll use them constantly.[2][8]

Your first MEGA storage

The processor is the first step toward any MEGA infrastructure. It takes storage from 1M (equivalent to 1024k) up to 256M, which is over one thousand times the capacity of 256k. Start with the lowest tier, the 1M MEGA Storage Component.[8][9]

Bigger components need a sturdier shell, so you'll also craft a MEGA Item Cell Housing. This is where more Sky Steel goes.[8][9]

After that, the tiers climb through 4M MEGA Storage Component, 16M MEGA Storage Component, 64M MEGA Storage Component and 256M MEGA Storage Component. Their recipes are shown below, so you can work up as your resources allow.[8][9]

Step 4: Housings for fluids and beyond

Fluids and other resource types get their own housings. The MEGA Fluid Cell Housing is made from Sky Bronze, which is Sky Stone alloyed with copper.[8][9]

Step 5: Portable cells and power

MEGA also has portable versions of its cells, such as the 1M Portable Item Cell. They hold a lot more but use a lot more energy, so the regular Energy Card isn't strong enough for them. They only support the Greater Energy Card for extra battery capacity.[6][8][9]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: megacells:cells/portable/portable_item_cell_1m

The portable chemical, experience and source cell recipes are changed by the pack. The fluid and item ones are the mod's own recipes.[8]

The Greater Energy Card is crafted from the Superdense Energy Cell (Superdense Energy Cell). That cell holds up to 12.8 million AE, which is 8 times a Dense Energy Cell and 64 times a standard one.[6]

Tip: The Superdense Energy Cell also shows up as one of the tasks in a quest in the creative chapter, alongside several other items: "Creative Energy Cell" quest.[7]

How does MEGA Cells work?

8 parts

MEGA Cells is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2. It adds higher storage tiers, from 1M up to 256M, plus some specialised cells and extra tools. This section covers how those systems work together in your network.[2]

The Accumulation Processor and storage tiers

Nearly every MEGA device is built around the Accumulation Processor. It is made from Sky Steel alloy, so you need that before you can build any MEGA infrastructure.[2][8]

With the processor you can push item storage cells from 1M (equivalent to 1024k) up to 256M. That is over one thousand times the capacity of a 256k cell. The component line runs 1M MEGA Storage Component, 4M MEGA Storage Component, 16M MEGA Storage Component, 64M MEGA Storage Component and 256M MEGA Storage Component. The in-pack recipes for each are shown below.[8][9]

Cell housings

Each cell type needs its own housing. The item housing uses Sky Steel, and fluid housings use Sky Bronze, an alloy of Sky Stone and copper. MEGA also has dedicated housings for other storage types.[9]

Portable cells and power

MEGA has portable versions of its cells, just like AE2. They draw a lot more energy, so they are crafted with a Dense Energy Cell instead of a regular energy cell. They still support the full range of upgrades that regular ME portable cells do.[8][9]

The regular Energy Card is not strong enough for MEGA portable cells. Only the Greater Energy Card raises their battery capacity. AE2's own wireless devices accept the Greater Energy Card too.[6][9]

In this pack the portable chemical cells and portable experience cells use changed recipes. Here are the 1M versions as examples.[8]

The Superdense Energy Cell holds 8 times as much energy as a Dense Energy Cell and 64 times as much as a standard one, up to 12.8 million AE per cell. It is also what you use to craft the Greater Energy Card, and it suits big Spatial IO setups that need a large buffer.[6]

Bulk Item Cell

A standard cell holds up to 63 different item types, but the MEGA Bulk Item Cell stores just one type. In exchange, it can hold a practically infinite amount of that item. The cell can go past what an ME network can handle, since a network only handles and displays up to 9.2 quintillion of any one item.[3]

The Bulk Cell has its own Netherite housing and is crafted from scratch with its dedicated component. It can't use any AE2 or MEGA housing, and it can't be taken apart again.[3]

A new Bulk Cell does nothing until you partition it to choose the item. After that it takes in that item and prioritises itself as the place to send it. If the filter is later cleared or replaced, the cell errors out and stops accepting items. You can still extract what's inside, and it works again once the original filter is restored or the cell is emptied and given a new filter.[3]

Bulk Compression

The Compression Card is an upgrade exclusive to the Bulk Cell. With it, the cell accepts the whole chain of variants of a resource, such as nuggets, ingots and blocks. It compresses them automatically following the crafting recipes between them. If a recipe turns 1 ingot into 9 nuggets and another turns 9 nuggets back into the ingot, the cell takes both and turns every 9 nuggets into an ingot.[3]

Internally the cell counts its contents in the smallest unit the resource can be crafted down to, such as a nugget, gem shard or dust. You can extract any variant through automation or by Shift-clicking in a terminal.[3]

Radioactive Chemical Cell

The MEGA Radioactive Chemical Storage Cell only matters if you use Mekanism and the Applied Mekanistics add-on. Regular chemical cells refuse radioactive chemicals such as Nuclear Waste, Polonium and Plutonium, and this cell stores nothing else. Like the Bulk Cell, it holds a single chemical type and must be partitioned first.[10][11]

Its capacity is finite, at a maximum of 256 bytes, which equals 2048 buckets. It also draws 250 AE/tick while inside a connected ME Chest or Drive. By default it refuses Spent Nuclear Waste, though that behaviour is configurable.[10]

Unverified The sources don't say how to change the Spent Nuclear Waste restriction, and no MEGA Cells config files are available for this pack. They also don't confirm that Applied Mekanistics is installed here, so check in game whether the Radioactive Chemical Cell exists.

Auto-crafting

MEGA adds larger crafting storage tiers for crafting CPUs, in black. They need their own dedicated version of the crafting unit.[4]

The MEGA co-processor gives 4 co-processing threads per block. The MEGA crafting monitor works exactly like the regular one and only matches the dark look of the rest of the CPU.[4][11]

The MEGA Pattern Provider doubles the pattern capacity and holds 18 patterns. The trade-off is that it supports processing patterns only.[4][11]

Extras

  • The MEGA Interface is a double-capacity interface: twice the slots, twice the I/O and throughput, and twice the stock-keeping.[5]
  • The Portable Cell Workbench is a hand-sized version of the Cell Workbench and can still configure any storage cell.[5]
  • The ME Cell Dock holds one storage cell at a time and has no built-in terminal like the ME Chest. It is a flat cable part, so one cable can carry several Docks in the same block space, which suits a compact subnetwork.[5]

How do you progress through MEGA Cells?

5 parts

MEGA Cells is an add-on that stacks higher storage tiers on top of the AE2 cells you already know, from 1M up to 256M. It also adds some specialised cells and extra tooling. In this pack a few of the recipes were changed, so here is the path in order, tier by tier.[2]

The storage components

Everything starts with the storage components. There are five tiers: 1M MEGA Storage Component, 4M MEGA Storage Component, 16M MEGA Storage Component, 64M MEGA Storage Component and 256M MEGA Storage Component. Each one is built on the component of the tier below, and every tier also needs an Accumulation Processor. The first MEGA step, 1M, starts from the AE2 256k ME Storage Component. All five recipes are the mod's own, not changed by the pack.[5][8]

Pick your housings

A component alone is not a usable cell. You pair it with a housing that decides what the cell stores. The item and fluid housings use the mod's recipes. The chemical and experience housings were changed by the pack.[8]

Standard and specialised cells

For chemical cells, every tier from 1M to 256M has two pack-changed recipes. You can craft the cell from scratch, or combine a component with a MEGA Chemical Cell Housing. The experience cell is also pack-changed, and the recipe dump shows the 16M one, 16M MEGA Experience Storage Cell.[8]

Crafting Shapeless

The MEGA Bulk Item Storage Cell is the odd one out. It stores a single item type, but an effectively unlimited amount of it. It is not made with any of the regular cell housings: it uses its own dedicated Netherite housing and its own component, MEGA Bulk Storage Component, always crafted from scratch. That also means it cannot be taken apart again. The pack changed this recipe. A new Bulk Cell does nothing until you partition it with the item you want it to hold.[3][8]

Portable cells

Portable cells exist for item, fluid, chemical, experience and source storage, each at all five tiers from 1M to 256M. They are shapeless recipes. The item and fluid ones are the mod's own, while the chemical, experience and source ones were changed by the pack. MEGA portable cells only accept the Greater Energy Card to boost their battery capacity.[5][6][8]

Energy and the quest

The Superdense Energy Cell holds up to 12.8 million AE per cell, which is handy for big Spatial IO setups. Its recipe is the mod's own, and it also needs an Accumulation Processor.[6][8]

In the quest book, the Superdense Energy Cell shows up in "Creative Energy Cell" quest, which sits in the "creative" chapter and unlocks after another quest in that chapter. All of its tasks are items, and the Superdense Energy Cell is one of them.[7]

How does MEGA Cells work with other mods?

5 parts

MEGA Cells leans heavily on other AE2 add-ons in this pack, and a few unrelated mods show up too. Here is where the in-pack recipes and quests connect them.[7][8]

Sky metals from other AE add-ons

MEGA's three sky alloys, Sky Steel Ingot, Sky Bronze Ingot and Sky Osmium Ingot, each have an advanced_ae reaction recipe and an extendedae crystal assembler recipe in this pack. All of those recipes are marked as changed by the pack.[8]

These alloys decide which cell housings you can build. The item housing asks for a sky steel ingot, the fluid housing for a sky bronze ingot and the chemical housing for a sky osmium ingot. The experience housing asks for Experience Bottle instead. The chemical and experience housing recipes are changed by the pack, while the item and fluid ones are the mod's own.[8]

On the quest side, quest "Creative Energy Cell" quest in the creative chapter mixes several mods in its tasks: Superdense Energy Cell, Energy Processor, Certus Quartz Crystal, Ultimate Control Circuit and Json Singularity. It has no title in the pack files and comes after quest 09D15AF118F0C8D8.[7]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use MEGA Cells?

2 parts

MEGA Cells appears in the "creative" chapter of the quest book, through the quest "Creative Energy Cell" quest. It has no title in the quest book, so you find it by its position in the chapter.[7]

What the quest asks for

The quest is all item tasks. The MEGA Cells part is the Superdense Energy Cell (Superdense Energy Cell). The rest of the list comes from other mods:[7]

Where it sits in the order

"Creative Energy Cell" quest comes after the quest "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest in the same chapter, so that one comes first in the chain.[7]
