What is AE2 Things?

AE2 Things is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2 (AE2), the storage and logistics mod. This pack ships AE2 Things version 1.4.2-beta.[1]
In this pack the add-on shows up as a family of five disk drives: 1k ME DISK Drive, 4k ME DISK Drive, 16k ME DISK Drive, 64k ME DISK Drive and 256k ME DISK Drive. They follow the same capacity tiers as the AE2 item storage cells.[2]
Where it fits in the progression
The mod appears in the logistics storage questline. Quest "The Start of Digital Storage!" quest is a single checklist with four tasks: get an AE2 drive, get an item storage cell (any tier from 1k to 256k), get one of the AE2 Things disk drives (any of the five tiers), and get an AE2 cell workbench. So you work with these disk drives right alongside the core AE2 storage basics.[2]
That quest only unlocks after you finish an earlier quest in the same chapter, so expect to have the basic AE2 setup going before you reach the disk drives.[2]

Quest "The Start of Digital Storage!" quest has four tasks: an ME Drive, a storage cell, a DISK Drive and a Cell Workbench. For the storage cell and for the DISK Drive, any tier from 1k to 256k is accepted.[2]
That quest unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter, so work through the chapter in order.[2]
What to make, in order
- Get the AE2 pieces the quest asks for: the ME Drive, a storage cell and the Cell Workbench. They come from base AE2, so their recipes are not covered here.[2]
- Craft an ME DISK Housing. The recipe is just below.[3]
- Craft your first DISK Drive. The 1k ME DISK Drive is the lowest tier and it satisfies the DISK Drive task in the quest.[2][3]
- Move up to 4k ME DISK Drive, 16k ME DISK Drive, 64k ME DISK Drive and 256k ME DISK Drive when you want a bigger tier.[3]

The DISK Drive tiers
The mod's drives in this pack come in these capacity tiers: 1k ME DISK Drive, 4k ME DISK Drive, 16k ME DISK Drive, 64k ME DISK Drive and 256k ME DISK Drive. Each tier is built around the ME Storage Component of the same size, so you step up by moving to the next component.[4]
Crafting a DISK Drive
Every tier has a shaped recipe and a shapeless recipe. The shaped recipe makes the drive straight from the matching storage component and raw materials. The shapeless recipe combines the storage component with a premade ME DISK Housing.[4]

How do you progress through AE2 Things?

In this pack, AE2 Things progression is a simple five-step ladder of ME DISK Drives. The sizes are 1k, 4k, 16k, 64k and 256k, and each one has its own item and its own recipe.[3]

The quest path
In the pack's quest book, this mod shows up in "The Start of Digital Storage!" quest, in the logistics storage chapter. It has no title in the pack files. It has four tasks: an AE2 ME Drive, an AE2 storage cell, a DISK Drive from this mod, and an AE2 Cell Workbench.[2]

Some slots in the direct drive recipes and the housing recipe don't ask for one fixed item. They accept any item from a shared common tag. So an item from any mod in the pack that carries the right tag will work there.[4]
