What is Ender Drives?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Ender Drives gives you a different way to store items. Drives link together by frequency, so every drive with the same frequency and privacy shares the same contents, no matter who crafted it. It works whether the drive sits in your AE2 system, in another dimension, or in another player's system.[1][2]

The pack includes Ender Drives 1.5.23 for NeoForge 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.42 or earlier.[3]

What every drive is set with

  • Frequency: drives on the same frequency share one virtual inventory.[2]
  • Scope: Global (the default, open to any player on that frequency), Private (tied to your UUID, though other users of your ME system can still access the storage) or Team (shared with your FTB Team).[2]
  • Mode: Bidirectional (the default), Input-Only or Output-Only.[2]

Types, not bytes

Unlike traditional AE2 drives, an Ender Drive is limited only by item types. Each type can hold up to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 items (2^63 - 1). The power cost grows with the number of items stored at that frequency, so a huge stockpile isn't free to run.[2]

How many types your server can handle depends on the server. The mod's guide describes an autobenchmark command that you can use to test it.[2]

Tape Disks for NBT-heavy gear

The mod also adds Tape Disks, AE2-compatible storage cells for items with NBT data, such as enchanted armor, tools and other non-stackable gear. They keep these items out of the type space on your big drives. Tape Drives do not tell AE2 that they are preferred for matching items, so use ME Drive priority to control where items go.[1][4]

Who it's for

If you run an AE2 setup and want storage shared across dimensions, bases or teammates, this mod is for you. Tape Disks are useful when your drives fill up with unique gear.[1][2][4]

Unverified Where Ender Drives fits in this pack's progression is unconfirmed. The sources show no quests for the mod and no ATM Star path involvement.

How do you get started with Ender Drives?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Ender Drives give you storage that is shared by frequency. Every drive with the same frequency and privacy shares the same contents, no matter who crafted it, which dimension it is in, or whose ME system it sits in. So the plan is simple: make one cell, set it up, and build from there.[1][2]

Step 1: Make a 1k Ender Storage Component

Everything starts with the 1k Ender Storage Component. It is the smallest tier of the component line, and it is the part that gives a cell its capacity. The pack changed this recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[5]

Step 2: Make an Ender Item Housing

Next you need the Ender Item Housing, the shell that a component goes into. The pack changed this recipe too.[5]

Then combine them into a 1k Ender Item Storage Cell

Put the housing and the component together to get your first 1k Ender Item Storage Cell. This recipe is the mod's own, unchanged by the pack. It is shapeless, so the arrangement in the grid doesn't matter.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: enderdrives:ender_disk_1k_storage

Before you use it

Every Ender Drive is set up with a frequency, a scope and a mode. Drives with the same frequency and scope all access the same virtual inventory. The mode defaults to Bidirectional (insert and extract freely), and the scope defaults to Global.[2]

Watch out: Global is public. Any player using the same frequency can access that shared inventory. If you don't want that, switch to Private, which ties the frequency to your UUID, or Team, which shares it with your FTB Team.[2]
Tip: Don't put two Ender Disks with the same frequency and scope in one ME network. The second one shows as inactive, because another disk with that frequency and scope is already active on the network.[6]

Step 4: Scale up

Once the 1k cell works for you, the pack has recipes for the 4k Ender Storage Component, 16k Ender Storage Component, 64k Ender Storage Component and 256k Ender Storage Component, and each of those recipes is marked as changed by the pack. Each component pairs with a housing to make the matching cell, such as the 4k Ender Item Storage Cell or the 256k Ender Item Storage Cell. Here is the 4k component as an example of the step up.[5]

The 4k component is built from the 1k component, and the pack changed this recipe.

Ender Drives are limited by the number of item types, not by item count, so you can store a huge amount of each type. Just remember that the power cost rises with the amount stored on the drive at that frequency.[2]

Optional: fluids and NBT-heavy gear

For fluids, the same flow applies with the Ender Fluid Housing, which has its own pack-changed recipe. Combine it with a component to get a cell like the 1k Ender Fluid Storage Cell.[5]

How does Ender Drives work?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Ender Drives work differently from normal AE2 drives. Instead of keeping items inside the cell you carry, every drive points at a shared virtual inventory. All drives with the same frequency and privacy share the same contents, whoever crafted them. That holds in your own AE2 system, in another dimension, or on another player's system.[1][2]

Frequency, scope and mode

Each Ender Drive is configured with three settings. The frequency decides which shared inventory you are using. The scope decides who can access it. The mode decides how items flow. Drives with the same frequency and scope all access the same virtual inventory, no matter where they are.[2]

Transfer modes

  • Bidirectional (the default): standard ME drive behavior, so you can insert and extract freely.[2]
  • Input Only: items can go in but not come out. This is handy for buffers or syncing inputs.[2]
  • Output Only: items can be extracted but not inserted. This suits output buffers or read-only access.[2]

The current mode shows in the cell's tooltip, next to a count of used and available types.[6]

Scope and privacy

  • Global (the default): public. Any player using the same frequency can access the shared inventory.[2]
  • Private: tied to your UUID, so only you can create drives that access that frequency. Other users of your ME system can still access the storage.[2]
  • Team: shared with your FTB Team. All members can create drives with access to the same frequency.[2]
Watch out: Only one Ender Disk with a given frequency and scope is active on an ME network. A second copy on the same network shows an "Inactive" tooltip, so don't expect to stack capacity by adding duplicates to one system.[6]

Limits are about types, not item counts

Unlike traditional AE2 drives, the only hard limit on an Ender Drive is the number of item types. Each type can hold up to 2^63 - 1 items, which is 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. The catch is that the power cost rises with the number of items stored on the drive at that frequency.[2]

How many types your server can handle depends on the server. You can test it with the autobenchmark command. Open a terminal with a drive on Private at the frequency you want to test. The benchmark keeps running until TPS drops below 18, which can take a few minutes. The mod author's personal average is about 275,000 types, but they have seen higher and lower suggestions. That type limit is shared between everyone using the drives on the same world.[2]

The exact command syntax isn't covered in the sources I have, so check in-game for it.[2]

Item and fluid cells

The item cells run from 1k Ender Item Storage Cell up through 4k Ender Item Storage Cell, 16k Ender Item Storage Cell, 64k Ender Item Storage Cell and 256k Ender Item Storage Cell. Fluid versions also exist, such as 1k Ender Fluid Storage Cell, 16k Ender Fluid Storage Cell and 256k Ender Fluid Storage Cell. Fluid cells report their usage as fluid types in the tooltip, and cells can show how many items or fluids they are partitioned to.[5][6]

Each cell can be made from a housing plus a matching storage component. Item cells use Ender Item Housing and fluid cells use Ender Fluid Housing. This is the mod's own recipe, shown here for the 1k item cell:[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: enderdrives:ender_disk_1k_storage

The pack also changed the "advanced" recipes, which are an alternative route to the same cells. Here is the pack's version for the 1k item cell:[5]

The fluid cells have their own advanced recipe in the pack, shown here for the 1k fluid cell:[5]

Tape Disks for NBT-heavy items

Tape Disks are AE2-compatible cells built for items with lots of NBT, such as tools, armor and enchanted gear, which normally eat type space on regular drives. A Tape Disk only accepts items with non-standard NBT, armor, tools or other non-stackable items. Plain stackable items with no NBT are rejected.[4]

Tape Disks enforce two limits. The type limit is the maximum number of unique item types stored. The byte limit is based on the NBT size of each item, so items with many tags, like Apotheosis gear, use more space. The tooltip shows how many bytes are used out of the total.[4][6]

  • Tape Drives do not tell AE2 that they are preferred for matching items, so use ME Drive priority to route items to them.[4]
  • A Tape Disk throttles itself automatically during IO Port transfers. This stops NBT-heavy items from being dumped all at once and freezing your game.[4]
  • Like Ender Disks, a second copy of the same Tape Disk on one ME network goes inactive.[6]

Admin commands and server settings

The mod includes an /enderdrives clear command. After a cell export (dumpcell), the EnderDrive data is not cleared automatically, so you are told to use the clear command once you have verified the export. A tape info command reports a tape's serialized bytes and whether it is loaded in memory. Servers can also disable these items, in which case the tooltip says so.[6]

Unverified This pack ships no config files for Ender Drives that I could check, so any server-side limits or power costs beyond what is described above are unverified.

How do you progress through Ender Drives?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Ender Drives progression in this pack is a ladder of capacity tiers: 1k, 4k, 16k, 64k and 256k. The same ladder exists for item cells and for fluid cells. A separate Tape Disk sits beside the ladder for gear-type items. The pack changed most of the recipes along the way, so follow the recipe blocks below rather than the mod's defaults.[5]

Step 1: Storage components

Everything starts with the storage component. The entry point is the 1k Ender Storage Component, and the pack changed its recipe. From there the components climb through the 4k Ender Storage Component, 16k Ender Storage Component and 64k Ender Storage Component to the 256k Ender Storage Component. You craft them in that order, and the pack changed every one of these recipes.[5]

The entry-level component, with a recipe changed by the pack.

Each step up the ladder uses the previous component, and the pack changed these recipes too.

Step 2: Housings

To turn a component into a usable cell you can use a housing. The Ender Item Housing is for item cells and the Ender Fluid Housing is for fluid cells. In this pack both housings use changed recipes.[5]

Building the cells

Each cell tier can be made two ways. The first is the shapeless route: combine a housing with the matching component. That recipe is the mod's own and the pack did not change it. The second is the pack-changed shaped route, which builds the cell straight from the matching component with no separate housing needed.[5]

The item cells run from the 1k Ender Item Storage Cell up through the 4k Ender Item Storage Cell, 16k Ender Item Storage Cell and 64k Ender Item Storage Cell to the 256k Ender Item Storage Cell. The fluid cells follow the same sizes, from the 1k Ender Fluid Storage Cell up to the 256k Ender Fluid Storage Cell. The fluid versions of the one-craft route differ from the item versions, as the recipe below shows.[5]

What a tier actually gives you

Ender Drives don't limit you by item count like normal AE2 drives. The only hard limit is the number of item types, and each type can hold up to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 items. The catch is that power cost rises with the amount stored at that frequency. The in-game guide also notes that servers start to stress at different type counts, with a personal average of about 275,000 types.[2]

Tip: Frequency, scope and mode are set per drive. Drives with the same frequency and scope share one virtual inventory, even across dimensions or players, so decide on your frequency plan before you fill a big cell.[1][2]

How does Ender Drives work with other mods?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Ender Drives is built to sit inside an Applied Energistics 2 (AE2) network. In this pack, every Ender Drives recipe that links to other mods is marked as changed by the pack, and they all pull in items from AE2 and Advanced AE.[1][5]

AE2 is the home for your drives

The mod's own guide describes its drives as working in your AE2 system. Drives that share a frequency and privacy share the same contents, whether they are in your AE2 system, another dimension, or another player's system.[1][2]

The Tape Disk is described as an AE2-compatible storage cell. It stores NBT-heavy items, and the guide uses Apotheosis gear as an example of items that take up a lot of NBT space. It will not tell AE2 that it is preferred for matching items, so you need to use ME Drive priority to control where items go.[4]

Advanced AE and AE2 materials in the crafting chain

In this pack, the housings, storage components and finished cells are all crafted with Advanced AE materials combined with AE2 materials. Higher component tiers are made by upgrading the previous tier's component, so you climb the chain one step at a time.[5]

The two housings are the first thing you will build. The Ender Item Housing needs an ender chest, and the Ender Fluid Housing needs an AE2 sky stone tank.[5]

The base 1k Ender Storage Component is where Advanced AE's quantum parts come in, along with a shattered singularity and an ender pearl. From there, each tier is crafted from the one before it, for example the 4k component from the 1k.[5]

The finished cells combine a matching storage component with the same family of AE2 and Advanced AE parts. Item cells such as 1k Ender Item Storage Cell also use an ender chest, while fluid cells such as 1k Ender Fluid Storage Cell use an AE2 sky stone tank instead. The same pattern repeats at every tier, up to 256k Ender Item Storage Cell and 256k Ender Fluid Storage Cell.[5]

The Tape Disk

The Tape Disk Item Storage Cell recipe stays on the AE2 side. It is built from AE2 materials plus a netherite ingot, with no Advanced AE parts in it.[5]

FTB Teams

Which Ender Drives config options matter?

7 parts

All of the Ender Drives options live in the server config file. Good news: wherever the file lists a mod default, this pack uses exactly that value, so nothing here has been changed from the mod's defaults. Here are the options you're most likely to care about.[7]

Item disk type limits

Each Ender Disk tier caps how many different item types it can hold. The pack keeps the mod's defaults for all of them.[7]

Fluid disk type limits

Fluid disks work the same way, but with much smaller numbers, and again these are the mod defaults.[7]

Scope and frequency

New Ender Drives default to the global scope (ender_scope.default_scope). The global, private and team scopes are all enabled, so you can pick whichever suits your world or team. The allowed frequency range runs from 0 to 4095 (ender_scope.frequency_min and ender_scope.frequency_max), which matches the mod defaults.[7]

Which disks are enabled

Every disk toggle in the general section is set to true. That covers all item disk tiers, all fluid disk tiers (including the creative versions) and the tape disk, for example general.enable_tape_disk.[7]

Tape disk limits

A tape disk holds up to 292,144 item bytes (tape_disk.tape_disk_max_bytes) and up to 255 item types (tape_disk.tape_disk_type_limit). A tape disk is evicted from RAM 300,000 ms after its last access (tape_disk.ram_eviction_timeout). Scheduled flushes to disk happen every 5000 ms (tape_disk.flush_interval), or after 500 changes (tape_disk.flush_threshold). All of these are the mod defaults.[7]

Database commit timing

Ender Drives saves its data through a database with its own commit timing. WAL commits happen no sooner than 2500 ms apart and no later than 5000 ms apart (ender_db.min_commit_interval_ms and ender_db.max_commit_interval_ms). DB flush commits run between 5000 ms and 60000 ms apart (ender_db.min_db_commit_interval_ms and ender_db.max_db_commit_interval_ms). Pending WAL entries are merged once they reach 100 (ender_db.merge_buffer_threshold). All of these match the mod defaults.[7]

Autobenchmark command

The autobenchmark command starts at 10,000 entries (ender_commands.autobenchmark_initial_size) and adds 5,000 per step (ender_commands.autobenchmark_step), resting 10,000 ms between steps (ender_commands.autobenchmark_ms_sleep). It tries up to 2,000,000 entries (ender_commands.autobenchmark_max_types) and aims to keep the server at 18 TPS or better (ender_commands.autobenchmark_min_tps). These are also the mod defaults.[7]

Tip: Both debug log options, ender_db.debug_log and tape_disk.debug_log, are off in this pack. The config describes them as extremely verbose, so only switch them on if you're tracking down a problem.[7]
