What is Applied Mekanistics?
2 parts
Applied Mekanistics is the official Mekanism support addon for AE2, and this pack includes version 1.6.3. It is the bridge between your ME network and Mekanism's chemicals, so it is worth knowing if you run both systems.[1][2]
What it does
- Chemical support for existing AE2 devices: for example an import bus or export bus on a chemical tank, a storage bus on a radioactive waste barrel, pressurized tubes attached to interfaces, and chemicals used in crafting recipes.[1]
- Chemical storage cells in 1k, 4k, 16k and 64k sizes, so you can keep gasses in your ME Drives. The project page notes they don't support radioactive gasses.[1]
- Chemical P2P tunnels for high-throughput chemical transfer. You right click any Mekanism chemical tank on a P2P tunnel to convert it.[1]
- QIO support for the Storage Bus: place the storage bus on the side of a QIO Dashboard and it can interact with the contents of a QIO frequency.[1][3]
Unverified The mod's project page was written for an older Minecraft version (1.18.2), so the cell sizes and the radioactive gas limitation have not been confirmed against this pack's version.
Where the quest book puts it
The quest book mentions the mod in the "Storage" chapter, which is in the group "Forgotten Knowledge" and is chapter 17 of 22 in the book. The chapter has 108 quests and opens with "General Storage Options" quest, which says it covers most of the basic ways to store your items.[3]
The quest that talks about the addon is a quest in "Storage". It asks for a QIO Drive Array and a QIO Dashboard, and explains that Applied Mekanistics lets an ME system access QIO storage when you place a Dashboard onto an AE2 Storage Bus and set the frequency you want. The quest text shown for it doesn't list an earlier quest that it follows. Nearby in the same chapter you will find "Mekanism Storage Options" quest and "Digital Storage" quest, which covers getting started with AE2 or Refined Storage 2 digital storage. Most of the chapter's other quests are told in the quest book itself.[3]
Applied Mekanistics is not part of the ATM Star quest path.[3]
How do you get started with Applied Mekanistics?
3 parts
Applied Mekanistics is the bridge between AE2 and Mekanism. It adds chemical support to existing AE2 devices, so you can do things like put an import bus or export bus on a chemical tank. It also adds its own chemical storage cells. Getting started means building those cells, and everything begins with one item.[1]
Step 1: Make the ME Chemical Cell Housing
The ME Chemical Cell Housing is used in every recipe this mod adds in the pack, so make it first. The mod's own notes say the housing uses osmium ingots where AE2's normal cell housing would use iron or copper, and the pack's recipe below does call for an osmium ingot. That means you need Mekanism's osmium before you can start.[1][4]

The pack's housing recipe uses any osmium ingot, any redstone dust and Quartz Glass.
Step 2: Turn it into a chemical storage cell
Combine the housing with an AE2 ME Storage Component of the size you want. The result is a chemical storage cell of the same size. Because the recipe is shapeless, the ingredients can go anywhere in the crafting grid. You can put these cells in an ME Drive and store gases in your network.[1][4]
Start small with the 1k ME Chemical Storage Cell while you set things up. The next size up is the 4k ME Chemical Storage Cell.[4]
The pack's recipes cover 1k, 4k, 16k, 64k and 256k cells. They all follow the same pattern, each pairing the housing with the matching storage component. Upgrade when your chemical storage fills up. The 16k ME Chemical Storage Cell, 64k ME Chemical Storage Cell and 256k ME Chemical Storage Cell all have their own recipes.[4][5]
Step 3: Optional portable chemical cells
If you want a cell you can carry, there is a portable version for each size. It is crafted from the housing, an AE2 storage component of the same size and a couple of other AE2 parts. Here is the 1k version. Larger sizes follow the same pattern, such as the 4k Portable Chemical Cell.[4][5]
The other portable cells use the same pattern with a bigger storage component.
How does Applied Mekanistics work?
4 parts
Applied Mekanistics is the bridge between AE2 and Mekanism. Instead of adding a pile of new machines, it teaches AE2's existing devices to handle Mekanism chemicals, and it adds chemical storage cells so your ME system can hold them.[1]
Chemical support on AE2 devices
The project page describes chemical handling as an extension of AE2's own parts. These are the examples it gives:[1]
- An import bus can sit on a chemical tank.[1]
- An export bus can sit on a chemical tank.[1]
- A storage bus can sit on a radioactive waste barrel.[1]
- Pressurized tubes can attach to interfaces.[1]
- Chemicals can be used in crafting recipes.[1]
Chemical storage cells
Chemical cells let you keep gases in your ME Drives. The project page lists 1k, 4k, 16k and 64k tiers, and this pack also has a 256k tier. The cells are 1k ME Chemical Storage Cell, 4k ME Chemical Storage Cell, 16k ME Chemical Storage Cell, 64k ME Chemical Storage Cell and 256k ME Chemical Storage Cell.[1][5]
Every chemical cell starts from the ME Chemical Cell Housing. The housing uses osmium ingots instead of the iron or copper ingots you might expect. You then combine the housing with an ME storage component of the matching tier.[1][4]

The pack's housing recipe is a shaped crafting recipe that takes any osmium ingot.
This is a shapeless recipe, and the other tiers use the same pattern with the matching storage component.
Portable chemical cells
The pack also has portable versions of the chemical cell: 1k Portable Chemical Cell, 4k Portable Chemical Cell, 16k Portable Chemical Cell, 64k Portable Chemical Cell and 256k Portable Chemical Cell. Each tier has its own recipe.[4][5]
Higher tiers use the matching storage component in the same shapeless recipe.
Other features from the project page
The project page also mentions two extras. Chemical P2P tunnels move chemicals at high throughput, and you convert one by right-clicking a Mekanism chemical tank on a P2P tunnel. A storage bus can also interact with the contents of a QIO frequency when you place it on the side of a QIO Dashboard.[1]
How do you progress through Applied Mekanistics?
3 parts
In this pack, Applied Mekanistics progression is all about storage tiers. The recipes give you chemical storage cells in sizes of 1k, 4k, 16k, 64k and 256k. Every one of them is built around the same base part, the cell housing.[4]
Unverified The sources here show no quest order for this mod, so the path below follows the in-pack recipes only. If the pack's quest book covers it, that would be told in the quest chapters, which are not shown here.
Start with the cell housing
Everything begins with ME Chemical Cell Housing. It is a shaped crafting recipe, and every chemical cell in the pack uses it, both the ME cells and the portable ones.[4]

ME chemical storage cells
Each ME chemical storage cell is a shapeless recipe that pairs the housing with the ME storage component of the same size. You move up a tier by using the next component size.[4]
- 1k ME Chemical Storage Cell is the entry tier.[4]
- 4k ME Chemical Storage Cell is the next step up.[4]
- 16k ME Chemical Storage Cell comes after that.[4]
- 64k ME Chemical Storage Cell is the tier before the top.[4]
- 256k ME Chemical Storage Cell is the top tier in these recipes.[4]
The other tiers follow the same pattern with a bigger storage component.

How does Applied Mekanistics work with other mods?
4 parts
Applied Mekanistics is the bridge between AE2 and Mekanism. In this pack, the recipes mix items from both mods, so you need parts from each side before you can store chemicals in your ME system.[1][4]
The housing: where Mekanism comes in
Every chemical cell starts with the ME Chemical Cell Housing. It is built from AE2's Quartz Glass, redstone dust and an osmium ingot. Osmium is the Mekanism part of the recipe, and the mod's project page says it takes the place of the iron or copper you would expect for an AE2-style housing.[1][4]

Chemical storage cells
Every size is a shapeless recipe, so the layout doesn't matter. The pack has one for each size from 1k to 256k, and the 1k cell 1k ME Chemical Storage Cell below is the example. The matching AE2 storage component for each size runs from 1k ME Storage Component up to 256k ME Storage Component. The project page only lists 1k to 64k, but the pack's recipes also include 256k ME Chemical Storage Cell.[1][4]
- 4k ME Chemical Storage Cell uses a 4k ME Storage Component.[4]
- 16k ME Chemical Storage Cell uses a 16k ME Storage Component.[4]
- 64k ME Chemical Storage Cell uses a 64k ME Storage Component.[4]
- 256k ME Chemical Storage Cell uses a 256k ME Storage Component.[4]

Portable chemical cells
The portable versions are the most AE2-heavy recipes here: they are where the ME Chest and the Energy Cell come in, as the 1k recipe below shows. The 4k, 16k, 64k and 256k portable cells follow the same pattern with the matching storage component, for example 256k Portable Chemical Cell.[4]
Cell upgrade recipes
The pack also has a cell upgrade recipe for each chemical storage cell and portable chemical cell size. They use AE2's storage cell disassembly recipe type and take the same inputs as the matching crafting recipe, such as ME Chemical Cell Housing plus a storage component. The recipe dump doesn't show their outputs, so check them in the recipe viewer before relying on them.[4]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Applied Mekanistics?
3 parts
In the pack's quest book, Applied Mekanistics is named in the Storage chapter. That chapter sits in the "Forgotten Knowledge" group, as chapter 17 of 22, and has 108 quests. They cover everything from backpacks and drawers to Refined Storage 2 and AE2.[3]
The quest that mentions the mod
The quest is a quest in "Storage". It asks you to hand in a QIO Drive Array and a QIO Dashboard. The quest explains that Mekanism's QIO system works on frequencies, so any Dashboard set to the frequency of a Drive Array can reach those items.[3]
Here is where the mod comes in: Applied Mekanistics lets an ME system access a QIO storage. You place a Dashboard onto an AE2 Storage Bus and set the frequency you want.[3]
The book shows no prerequisite for this quest, so it starts a small QIO line. Three quests list it as their prerequisite.[3]
What comes after it
- "QIO Drives" quest asks for the four QIO drive tiers: QIO Drive, Hyper-Dense QIO Drive, Time-Dilating QIO Drive and Supermassive QIO Drive. Up to ten drives fit in each Drive Array.[3]
- "Portable QIO Dashboard" quest asks for the Portable QIO Dashboard, so you can reach your storage without placing a Dashboard down.[3]
- "QIO Importing & Exporting" quest asks for the QIO Importer, QIO Exporter and QIO Redstone Adapter. Importers and Exporters insert into and pull from a QIO system set to their frequency.[3]
The AE2 side
The Storage Bus you put the Dashboard on is covered by a quest in "Storage". It asks for the ME Storage Bus plus three ExtendedAE storage bus variants, and it comes after "AE2 Processors" quest in the same chapter.[3]
