What is Extended AE?

1 part

Extended AE is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2 that streamlines storage and crafting workflows. This pack ships version 1.21-2.2.36 for NeoForge, so everything in this guide is written for that build.[1][2]

The mod's own highlights include a multiblock Assembler Matrix for extreme crafting speed, an Extended Molecular Assembler with x8 parallel crafting, and a Crystal Assembler and Restorer for crystal growth and repair. It also adds tag, mod and precise storage and export buses, plus the ME Canner for filling and emptying containers.[1]

Most of its gear starts with Entro Crystal, the main crafting ingredient for most Extended AE items and machines. Those items are too complex for a crafting table, so you will mostly make them in the Crystal Assembler.[3][4]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book covers Extended AE in the "General Storage" chapter. It is in the "Resources & Logistics" group and is chapter 7 of 31 in the book. The chapter has 146 quests, and most of them are about general storage options. Extended AE shows up as one run of quests in the middle of it.[5]

  1. "Growing Entro Crystals" quest comes after the Fluix Crystals quest. It has you make an Entro Seed and collect an Entro Crystal, and the quest suggests starting early if you plan to use Extended AE.[5]
  2. "Crystal Assembler" quest comes after Completing Processors and Growing Entro Crystals.[5]
  3. "Inscriber Concurrent Press" quest and "Crystal Fixer" quest both come after the Crystal Assembler quest.[5]
  4. "The Assembler Matrix Structure" quest comes after the Inscriber Concurrent Press quest.[5]
  5. Five Assembler Matrix quests branch off the structure quest: "Assembler Matrix Craft Core" quest, "Assembler Matrix Frame" quest, "Assembler Matrix Pattern Core" quest, "Assembler Matrix Speed Core" quest and "Max Size Assembler Matrix" quest.[5]

A few Extended AE items also appear in quests elsewhere in the chapter. "Storage Bus" quest comes after the ME Interface quest and includes the ME Tag Storage Bus, ME Mod Storage Bus and ME Precise Storage Bus. "Advanced Pattern Provider Upgrade" quest comes after the Storing Patterns quest and includes the Pattern Provider Upgrade. The text of the other quests in this chapter is in the quest book.[5]

Tip: The Assembler Matrix needs at least one Pattern Core and one Craft Core. Each Pattern Core gives 36 pattern slots, and each Craft Core can run 8 crafting jobs at once. 5 Speed Cores give full speed, and more than that add nothing.[5][6]

How do you get started with Extended AE?

5 parts

Almost everything in Extended AE starts with one material: the Entro Crystal. It is the main crafting ingredient for most of the mod's items and machines, so the first job in this pack is to get a supply of it growing.[3]

The pack's quest book covers this in the "General Storage" chapter, in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 7 of 31). The order below follows that chain: "Growing Entro Crystals" quest, then "Crystal Assembler" quest, then "Crystal Fixer" quest and "Inscriber Concurrent Press" quest, then "The Assembler Matrix Structure" quest. Most of the later quests in that chapter are not shown in the sources here, so check the quest book for them.[5]

Step one: Entro Seeds and a crystal farm

Craft Entro Seed first. Right-click a Fluix Block in the world with one and it becomes Budding Entroized Fluix, which grows Entro Crystals the same way Certus Quartz grows. The quest book says to get this going early, especially if you plan to get into Extended AE. The pack changes this recipe from the mod's version, so follow the one below.[5][7][8]

Recipe id: extendedae:entro_seed

This is the pack's changed version of the Entro Seed recipe.

Tip: Let the buds finish growing before you harvest. Breaking an Entro Bud that is not fully grown only gives you an Entro Shard.[9]

Step two: build the Crystal Assembler

The Crystal Assembler is the machine that crafts most of the complex Extended AE devices, since they are too complex for a crafting table. The quest book adds that it can craft 4 processors at once. In this pack the config option device.enable_crystal_assembler_inscribe_processors is set to true, so it can also do processor inscriber recipes.[4][5][10]

Step three: keep your crystals healthy

Budding Entroized Fluix always degrades eventually, so you will want the Crystal Fixer. It repairs and upgrades budding blocks in the world, and it needs power to work. For example, it turns Budding Half Entroized Fluix into Budding Mostly Entroized Fluix using ender pearl dust.[5][8][11][12]

This is one of the Crystal Fixer's upgrade steps.

Step four: Concurrent Press and Concurrent Processors

Next in the quest book is the Inscriber Concurrent Press, which you use to make Printed Concurrent Circuit. Concurrent Processors go into multithreaded machines so they can handle several tasks at once.[5][8][13]

This is the pack's changed version of the Concurrent Processor recipe.

Step five: aim for the Assembler Matrix

The Assembler Matrix is a multiblock that can run many crafting jobs at once, and the quest book places it right after the Concurrent Press. It needs at least one Assembler Matrix Pattern Core and one Assembler Matrix Craft Core, and it can't be hollow. Each Pattern Core gives 36 pattern slots, and each Craft Core runs 8 crafting jobs at the same time. Five Assembler Matrix Speed Core blocks give full speed, and more add nothing.[5][6]

The frame is crafted from an Extended Machine Frame, and the pack changes this recipe from the mod's version.[8]

How does Extended AE work?

10 parts

Extended AE is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2. It gives you bigger and faster versions of familiar AE2 devices, plus a few new machines for crafting, filtering and moving things around your ME network. This section covers how the main systems behave in this pack.[1][14]

Machine frames and the Crystal Assembler

The Extended Machine Frame is the foundation of the mod, and most block-form machines in it need one.[15]

Most of the extended devices are too complex for a crafting table, so you craft them in the Crystal Assembler. The face with the screen cannot connect to the network. It also does certain in-world transformation recipes, such as fluix transformation. In this pack device.enable_crystal_assembler_inscribe_processors is true, so it can also run processor inscriber recipes.[4][10]

Assembler Matrix

The Assembler Matrix is a multiblock crafter. It can run many crafting jobs at the same time and saves you channels. Its edges are Assembler Matrix Frame blocks, its faces are Assembler Matrix Wall or Assembler Matrix Glass, and its interior holds the cores. It must be completely filled, not hollow, and it needs at least one Pattern Core and one Craft Core. When it is formed and powered, the lines on the frame turn blue.[6]

  • Pattern Core: the matrix only takes patterns from its Pattern Cores, and each one provides 36 pattern slots.[6]
  • Assembler Matrix Craft Core: the matrix hands crafting jobs to its Craft Cores, and each one runs 8 jobs at the same time.[6]
  • Speed Core: 5 speed cores give full speed, and more than 5 add nothing.[6]
Watch out: The in-game guide says edge lengths run from 3 to 7, but this pack's config sets the maximum matrix size to 6 (the mod default, with an allowed range of 3 to 16). Plan for 6 at most. The option is device.assembler_matrix_max_size.[6][10]

Right-click a formed, online matrix to open its GUI. There you can add or search for patterns and see how many jobs it is running.[6]

Crystal Assembler (extendedae)

Recipe id: extendedae:assembler/assembler_matrix_crafter

Made in the Crystal Assembler, and it uses an Extended Molecular Assembler.

Parallel crafting

The Extended Molecular Assembler runs eight crafting jobs at once and works twice as fast as the normal one. You cannot put a pattern in it directly. The Concurrent Processor is commonly used in multithreaded machines, letting them handle several tasks at once.[13][16]

The Extended Inscriber is the same idea for inscribing: it runs 4 jobs at once, and it has a button to change its inventory's maximum stack size, as with the normal Inscriber. The Circuit Slicer cuts material blocks straight into processor prints and is up to nine times faster than an Inscriber.[17][18]

Storage, interfaces and item handling

The ME Wireless Connector links two networks. It has limited range, cannot cross dimensions and only supports one-to-one connections. You link two connectors by clicking each with the ME Wireless Setup Kit, and sneak + click clears the tool's setting. Connectors can be colored like cables and only connect to cables or connectors of the same color.[26]

Power use grows with distance on a curve that is not linear, so very distant links get expensive. Power-saving cards each reduce the energy cost by 10%. This pack sets the maximum range to 1,000 (device.wireless_connector_max_range) and leaves the power multiplier at 1 (device.wireless_connector_power_multiplier), both mod defaults.[10][26]

Smart buses and automation devices

  • Precise Export Bus: exports in exact quantities and only when the target can accept the whole amount. With 3 cobblestone set, it stops once the network holds fewer than 3, or when the chest has room for only 2 more.[27]
  • Threshold Export Bus: runs when the stored amount is above or below a threshold. With copper set to 128 it exports above 128, or below 128 in BELOW mode.[28]
  • Threshold Level Emitter: works like a latch. With a lower threshold of 100 and an upper of 150, it turns on once the amount passes 150, stays on while it falls, and turns off below 100.[29]
  • Mod Export Bus and Mod Storage Bus: filter by mod name or mod ID, with commas between several mods.[30][31]
  • Tag Export Bus and Tag Storage Bus: filter by item or fluid tags. The storage bus supports & (AND), | (OR), ^ (XOR), brackets for priority and * as a wildcard.[32][33][34]
  • Precise Storage Bus: set a numerical limit and it only inserts up to that limit.[35]
  • ME Active Formation Plane places blocks or drops items, and the Smart Annihilation Plane breaks blocks or absorbs items per its configuration. Neither needs a subnet.[36][37]
  • ME Vacuum Interface: collects dropped items into the network. Its default area is 5 x 5 x 5 blocks, each dimension can be up to 10, and the offset can be up to 16.[38]

The Extended Pattern Access Terminal adds three things over the normal one: searching patterns by input or output ingredient names, highlighting the matched pattern in the GUI, and highlighting a Pattern Provider in the world so you can find the one that is stuck.[39]

ME Canner

The ME Canner cans fluids into containers. The first slot holds the filling material and the second holds the item to fill. Each operation costs 80 AE. By default it only fills fluids. Applied Flux, Applied Mekanistics and Applied Botanics Addon let it handle energy, gas and mana.[40]

Only its top and bottom sides accept energy and connect to the network. For autocrafting, a pattern must contain only the filling material and the container. In Empty mode it drains a container instead, and you switch the inputs and outputs in the pattern.[40]

Bulk editing and moving devices

  • Config Modifier: click a device or part to change its configuration inventory in bulk. The modes are Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide, Maximize, Minimize, Set and Clear.[41]
  • Pattern Modifier: multiplies or divides processing pattern amounts (division only works when the amounts divide evenly), replaces ingredients, changes substitution modes and clones patterns. Multiplication caps at 999,999 per ingredient, and this pack sets the multipliers to 2, 3, 5 and 7 (item.pattern_modifier_multipliers).[10][42]
  • ME Packing Tape: sneak + right-click a device to pack it into an item that keeps its settings and inventory, which is handy when moving a setup. Right-click with the package to unpack it. This pack's whitelist (item.me_packing_tape_whitelist) covers the extended and normal interfaces, pattern providers and drives.[10][43]

The device upgrade items, such as Import/Export Bus Upgrade, let you sneak + right-click a normal device to turn it into the extended version without breaking it. All settings and inventories are kept.[44]

Recipe id: extendedae:ex_bus_upgrade

Infinity cells

The water and cobblestone infinity cells hold 2.1 billion items or fluids and let you extract or insert unlimited cobblestone or water. They draw idle power: item.infinity_cell_energy_cost is 8 AE/t in this pack, the mod default.[10][45]

The pack changed the recipe for the Infinity Cobblestone Cell. Its startup script also registers extra infinity cells of the same type for dirt, sand, andesite, soul sand, blackstone, basalt, cobbled deepslate, end stone, netherrack, sky stone and kivi, plus lava.[8][46]

Entro budding upgrades

Entro crystals grow from Budding Entroized Fluix, which always degrades over time. The ME Crystal Fixer repairs and upgrades budding blocks. Here it turns Budding Half Entroized Fluix into Budding Mostly Entroized Fluix using ender pearl dust. The pack also has a PneumaticCraft assembly laser route for the same step.[8][11][12]

How do you progress through Extended AE?

5 parts

Extended AE is told in the General Storage chapter of the quest book (group Resources & Logistics, chapter 7 of 31). The path runs off the AE2 line: "Fluix Crystals" quest leads to "Growing Entro Crystals" quest, and "Completing Processors" quest comes after Silicon. Both feed into "Crystal Assembler" quest, which is the real gateway. The chapter has 146 quests and 43 of them are not covered here, so open the quest book for the rest.[5]

Tier 1: Entro Crystals

Everything starts with growing Entro Crystals. Make an Entro Seed and right-click it on a Fluix Block in the world to turn it into a budding block, then harvest it like Certus. The quest book recommends getting this going early if you plan to go deep into Extended AE.[5]

The pack hides the small, medium and large Entro cluster items from JEI, so don't be surprised if you can't look them up there.[47]

You turn crystals into Entro Dust by crushing them. The Inscriber can do it, and the pack added crushing recipes for the crystal in Create, Mekanism, Actually Additions, EnderIO, Modern Industrialization and Oritech, so use whatever machine you already have.[8]

The Entro Infused Ingot is the key material for the next tier, since the machine frame and the Assembler Matrix walls both use it. The pack changed its transform recipe.[8]

"The Assembler Matrix Structure" quest comes after the Concurrent Press quest, and the quests for the individual pieces unlock from there. The Matrix combines Molecular Assemblers and Pattern Providers and runs many crafting jobs at once. It is a rectangular prism with edges between 3 and 7. The edges are Frames, the faces are Wall or Glass, and the inside is filled with cores. It needs at least one Pattern Core and one Craft Core, and it can't be hollow.[5][6]

The quest book's "Max Size Assembler Matrix" quest quest covers a typical high-end setup, which is a 7x7x7 structure. The pack changed the Frame and Pattern Core recipes.[5][8]

How does Extended AE work with other mods?

5 parts

Extended AE is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2, so most of its recipes are built on AE2 parts. The pack also wires it into several other mods, and a few of those links are changed from the mod defaults.[1][8]

Built on Applied Energistics 2

You craft most Extended AE devices in the Crystal Assembler. The Crystal Assembler itself is made from AE2 parts such as the ME Crafting Terminal, a Logic Processor and a Sky Stone Tank, plus an Extended Machine Frame. In the quest book it comes after the Completing Processors and Growing Entro Crystals quests. "Crystal Assembler" quest[4][5][8]

Entro Crystals start from Fluix. The quest "Growing Entro Crystals" quest comes after the Fluix Crystals quest. It tells you to make an Entro Seed and right-click it on a Fluix Block in the world to make a budding block. The pack also adds a Modern Industrialization recipe for Entro Crystal that takes 32 Fluix Crystals, 32 Entro Dust and 500 water. An overload processing recipe makes 64 Entro Crystals from 32 Fluix Crystals, 500 water and 32 entro dusts.[5][8]

The Concurrent Processor is the key part that Extended AE shares with other mods. The pack changed its inscriber, Crystal Assembler and overload processing recipes. This is the Crystal Assembler version, which makes 4 at once:[8]

Advanced AE

Several Advanced AE items are built from Extended AE parts. The Advanced Extended Pattern Provider starts from an ME Extended Pattern Provider. The Quantum Computer Accelerator, Quantum Crafting Unit and Quantum Computer Multi-Threader all need Concurrent Processors.[8]

The quest "Advanced Pattern Provider Upgrade" quest covers upgrading your providers to the Advanced AE version. It comes after the Storing Patterns quest.[5]

Gating other mods' machines and items

The pack changed four recipes for the Atomic Empowering Matrix, Assembly Matrix, Injector Fusion Matrix and Infused Awakening Matrix so that each needs an Extended Molecular Assembler. They are crafted in other mods' stations: the Atomic Empowering Matrix with Actually Additions empowering, the Assembly Matrix with Create sequenced assembly, the Injector Fusion Matrix with Draconic Evolution fusion crafting, and the Infused Awakening Matrix with Mystical Agriculture awakening. The pack also changed Matrix Circuitry, which needs a Concurrent Processor and a Modern Industrialization Digital Circuit.[8]

The Extended A.P.S is crafted in the Crystal Assembler from an Amadron Processing Station and a Concurrent Processor.[8]

Silicon and Quartz Blend

The pack changed how Quartz Blend is used. Smelting or blasting it gives 4 Silicon, and Mekanism enriching gives 6. Quartz Blend itself can be crafted from Quartz Dust.[8]

Infinity cells and the ME Canner

The pack uses Extended AE's custom infinity cell type to register extra infinity cells. They cover dirt, sand, andesite, soul sand, blackstone, basalt, cobbled deepslate, end stone, netherrack, sky stone and kivi from XyCraft, plus a lava cell.[46]

By default the ME Canner only fills fluids. The mod's own guide lists Applied Flux, Applied Mekanistics and Applied Botanics Addon as the addons that let it fill energy, Mekanism gas and Botania mana.[40]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Extended AE?

3 parts

Everything for this mod in the quest book lives in one chapter: General Storage, in the Resources & Logistics group (chapter 7 of 31). It has 146 quests. The text of 13 of them isn't shown in the sources here, so check the quest book for those.[5]

Entro crystals and the Crystal Assembler

  1. "Growing Entro Crystals" quest comes after "Fluix Crystals" quest. It asks for an Entro Seed and an Entro Crystal. You make the seed, then right-click it on a Fluix Block in the world to convert it into the budding block that grows Entro Crystals. The quest says it's a good idea to get these growing early.[5]
  2. "Crystal Assembler" quest needs both "Completing Processors" quest and the Entro quest done first. It asks for the Crystal Assembler, which crafts many of the complex Extended AE items and can also craft 4 Processors at once.[5]
  3. "Crystal Fixer" quest follows the Crystal Assembler and asks for the Crystal Fixer. It repairs and upgrades Budding Crystals in-world, which helps if your Flawless Budding Crystals have degraded.[5]
  4. "Inscriber Concurrent Press" quest also follows the Crystal Assembler. It asks for the Inscriber Concurrent Press and the Concurrent Processor. The quest says you'll need Entro Crystals, lots of power and Singularities to craft with these.[5]

The Assembler Matrix

Once you have the Concurrent Press, "The Assembler Matrix Structure" quest opens up. It asks for an Assembler Matrix Wall. The Assembler Matrix is a multiblock that combines the functions of Molecular Assemblers and Pattern Providers, and it can run many crafting jobs simultaneously. It can be between 3x3x4 and 7x7x7, must contain at least 1 Matrix Pattern Core and 1 Matrix Craft Core, and can't have hollow spaces. The edges are Frames, the faces can be Wall or Glass, and the interior is Cores.[5]

Several quests branch off that one. Four of them each ask for a single part:[5]

"Max Size Assembler Matrix" quest also follows the structure quest. It asks for the wall or Assembler Matrix Glass, plus the frame, pattern, craft and speed parts, which together make a typical high-end 7x7x7 setup.[5]

"Quantum Autocrafting" quest asks for an Advanced AE item rather than an Extended AE one, but it sits behind both the Autocrafting quest and the Inscriber Concurrent Press quest.[5]

Storage buses and pattern providers

"Storage Bus" quest follows "ME Interface" quest. It asks for the standard Storage Bus along with the ME Tag Storage Bus, ME Mod Storage Bus and ME Precise Storage Bus. The quest says storage buses can be filtered, and that you can build an essentially infinite storage network that only takes up one channel.[5]

"Advanced Pattern Provider Upgrade" quest follows "Storing Patterns" quest. It asks for the Pattern Provider Upgrade alongside the Advanced AE version of the upgrade. The quest text itself only describes the Advanced AE upgrade and its extra pattern slots.[5]

Which Extended AE config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Everything for Extended AE lives in one file, config/extendedae-common.toml. Every option in it that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default in this pack. The values below are what you get here.[48]

Crafting and interface sizes

Wireless connector and Infinity Cells

Pattern Modifier and ME Packing Tape

item.pattern_modifier_multipliers is set to 2, 3, 5 and 7 in this pack.[48]

item.me_packing_tape_whitelist decides which AE devices and parts the ME Packing Tape can pack. In this pack it covers the Extended AE interface, pattern provider and drive, plus their part versions for the interface and pattern provider. It also covers the ae2 interface, pattern provider and drive, and the ae2 cable versions of the interface and pattern provider.[48]

Client and debug options

client.disable_inscriber_item_render is false, so the Extended Inscriber's item render stays on. It only works client side. misc.debug_mode is false, so debug logging is off.[48]
