What is Applied Flux?

1 part

Applied Flux lets your ME network store energy (FE) in special cells, so your AE system doubles as a big battery bank. This pack ships version 1.21-2.1.5 for NeoForge.[1][2]

Cells run from 1k ME FE Storage Cell up to 256M ME FE Storage Cell. Capacity is based on bytes, like AE2's item and fluid cells. By default every byte holds 1,048,576 FE, and that can be changed in the Appflux config. At the default, the biggest cell holds 281,474,976,710,656 FE.[3]

To get energy in and out, you use the Flux Accessor. It has no I/O limits by default, which you can also change in the Appflux config. It has a fast mode, which outputs every tick and may cause lag if heavily used, and a normal mode, which outputs based on the target's stored energy and won't cause lag.[4]

Your terminals show the stored energy as green "fluid". It isn't real fluid, so buckets won't work, but you can charge or drain batteries and electric tools through the terminal.[1][5]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Applied Flux" quest lives in the "General Storage" chapter, in the "Resources & Logistics" group. That chapter is number 7 of 31 in the book and has 146 quests. The quest comes right after "The Reaction Chamber". It asks for any FE storage cell, a Flux Accessor and an Induction Card.[6]

The quest explains that the mod stores power and transfers it automatically to connected machines. Put an Induction Card in a Pattern Provider and the machines connected to it are powered with FE from your system.[6]

The sources I have show no quest that comes after it, and nothing in the quest text shown ties it to the ATM Star path. Another quest in the same chapter, placed after "I/O Bus", mentions that Applied Flux exports energy using Energy Tablets. Most of the other quests in the chapter are not covered here, so check the quest book itself for them.[6]

How do you get started with Applied Flux?

4 parts

Applied Flux lets your ME network store energy (FE) inside storage cells. Here is the order I'd go in, starting with the materials and ending with the blocks that move the power around.[1][7]

In the quest book, "Applied Flux" quest is in the General Storage chapter (group Resources & Logistics, chapter 7 of 31) and comes after the quest The Reaction Chamber. It asks for any FE storage cell, a Flux Accessor and an Induction Card, so those are the three things to aim for.[6]

First, Redstone Crystal

Redstone Crystal is made by combining a redstone block with fluix crystal and glowstone. The crystals store a large amount of energy while taking up very little space. The pack changes this recipe, and one craft gives you 2 crystals.[8][9]

2× Redstone CrystalChanged by the pack

Transform (ae2)

Recipe id: appflux:transform/redstone_crystal

Next, charge them. The Charged Redstone Crystal comes from the AE2 charger, the same block that "Getting Started With Applied Energistics!" quest asks you to make. You need it for the energy circuits in the Energy Processor section below.[6][9]

Cell capacity is counted in bytes, like AE2 item cells. Each byte holds 1,048,576 FE, and the pack keeps that value in flux_cell.amount.[3][11]

Energy Processor

All energy devices need the Energy Processor to route energy. You will want it as you move up the cell sizes, since the 16k ME Energy Storage Component recipe uses it. The chain is: make the Inscriber Energy Press in the charger, print a Printed Energy Circuit with it in the inscriber, then finish the processor.[9][12]

Flux Accessor and Induction Card

The Flux Accessor is your input/output block for the FE stored in your cells. It has a fast mode and a normal mode. Fast mode outputs energy every tick and may cause lag if used heavily.[4][6]

The pack sets flux_accessor.enable to false. That option is described as allowing the Flux Accessor to charge the ME network with stored FE. The I/O limit in flux_accessor.io_limit is 0, which means no limit.[11]

The Induction Card lets AE devices accept or send energy. According to the quest, putting one in a Pattern Provider powers the connected machines automatically from the FE in your system.[6][13]

Tip: Terminals show stored energy as green fluid. It is not real fluid, so buckets won't work on it. Use an energy container, such as a battery or an electric tool, to fill or drain it.[5]
Watch out: The pack sets misc.enable to false. That option allows the ME Import Bus to import energy like items and fluids.[11]

How does Applied Flux work?

5 parts

Applied Flux lets your ME network store and move raw FE, so you can manage your power system with AE. The pieces are FE storage cells, the Flux Accessor, the Induction Card and a small chain of crafting materials. Here is how they fit together in this pack.[1][7]

FE storage cells

ME FE Storage Cells are the main way to store power with this mod. Like item and fluid cells, their capacity is based on bytes. Each byte holds 1,048,576 FE, and the pack keeps that default in flux_cell.amount.[3][11]

At that value the capacity table in the guide runs from 1,073,741,824 FE for the smallest cell up to 281,474,976,710,656 FE for the largest. If you change the config value, the capacities change with it.[3][11]

A finished cell is an energy storage component plus an ME FE Cell Housing. The housing needs Insulating Resin, which stops stored energy from leaking out.[9][10]

Recipe id: appflux:16k_fe_cell_assemble

Combining a component with a housing gives the finished cell.

The pack also changes the direct crafting recipe for the 16k ME FE Storage Cell, so check it here rather than relying on the mod's defaults.[9]

Portable FE cells come in the same range of sizes as the normal ones, but each is only a quarter of the size of the matching normal cell. The guide also says that once the right item is installed in a portable FE cell, it will automatically charge the items in your inventory.[14]

Reading and filling energy in the terminal

Terminals show the stored energy as a green fluid. It is not a real fluid, so buckets will not work on it. To fill or drain it, use an energy container such as a battery or an electric tool.[5]

This FE is separate from the energy inside AE's own Energy Cells. The guide stresses that the energy handled here is the FE stored in your FE Storage Cells.[4]

Flux Accessor

The Flux Accessor inputs and outputs the energy stored in your ME network. Its tooltip says it pulls energy from the network, and that you need an external cable to push energy.[4][13]

It has a fast mode and a normal mode. Fast mode outputs energy every tick and may cause lag if you use it heavily. Normal mode outputs based on the target's stored energy and will not cause lag issues.[4][13]

The I/O limit is set by flux_accessor.io_limit. The pack leaves it at 0, which means no limitation. The allowed range is 0 to 2,147,483,647.[4][11]

Watch out: The pack sets flux_accessor.enable to false. That option's description is that it allows the Flux Accessor to charge the ME network with stored FE, so don't count on charging the network that way here.[11]

Induction Card

The Induction Card allows AE devices to accept or send energy. It is crafted from a Basic Card and a Flux Accessor.[9][13][15]

Induction CardMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: appflux:induction_card

If you want a device to output energy, you have to mark FE in its config slot. Right-click the slot with an energy container to do that.[16]

Watch out: misc.enable is false in the pack. That option lets an ME Import Bus import energy like items and fluids, so the pack has it switched off. The pack does enable third_party_support.enable_mi, which turns on MI-EU support.[11]

Energy Processor and materials

The Energy Processor manages energy flows in the ME system, and all energy devices need one to route energy. It is made in the inscriber from a Printed Energy Circuit.[9][12]

How do you progress through Applied Flux?

7 parts

Applied Flux is an AE2 addon that lets your ME network store FE in special cells and hand it out to machines. In the quest book, "Applied Flux" quest sits in the General Storage chapter (group Resources & Logistics, chapter 7 of 31). It comes after "The Reaction Chamber" quest, which follows "The Matter Condenser" quest, which follows "Fluix Crystals" quest. The quest asks for any FE cell, a Flux Accessor and an Induction Card.[6]

Step 1: Redstone Crystals

Everything starts with Redstone Crystal. Loose redstone is too bulky to put in a cell, so a redstone block gets crystallized with fluix and glowstone into crystals that hold a lot of energy in very little space. The pack changed this transform recipe.[8][9]

Step 2: Charged crystals and the Energy Processor

The Energy Processor routes energy through your ME system, and every energy device needs one. Here is the chain to get it:[12]

  1. Charge your crystals in the Charger to get Charged Redstone Crystal.[9]
  2. Make the Inscriber Energy Press, which also comes out of the Charger.[9]
  3. Press a charged crystal in the Inscriber to get a Printed Energy Circuit.[9]
  4. Finish it in the Inscriber to get the Energy Processor.[9]

The tier ladder

FE cells run from 1k up to 256M, and each size has its own storage component. Capacity is counted in bytes, and by default every byte holds 1,048,576 FE. That works out to 1,073,741,824 FE on the smallest cell and 281,474,976,710,656 FE on the biggest. The Appflux config can change the per-byte value.[3]

Getting power out

The Flux Accessor inputs and outputs the energy stored in your network. By default it has no I/O limits, which the Appflux config can change. It has a fast mode, which outputs every tick and may cause lag if used heavily, and a normal mode, which outputs based on the target's stored energy and won't cause lag. The Induction Card is made from a Flux Accessor, and per the quest you insert it into Pattern Providers to power the machines they feed.[4][6][9]

Lightning shortcut

If you go down the Lightning Technology route from "Lightning Technology" quest, the pack changed several overload processing recipes for this mod. How does Applied Flux work with other mods?

5 parts

Applied Flux is an addon for Applied Energistics 2, so almost everything in it is built from AE2 parts. In this pack it also picks up recipes from a few other mods, and the pack has changed several of them. Here is where the connections are.[7][9]

Where the quest book puts it

The quest "Applied Flux" quest sits in the General Storage chapter (group Resources & Logistics, chapter 7 of 31), right after The Reaction Chamber. It asks for an FE storage cell, the Flux Accessor and the Induction Card. It explains that machines connected to a Pattern Provider can be powered by putting an Induction Card in the provider.[6]

Another quest, a quest in "General Storage", comes after I/O Bus. It says Applied Flux exports Energy using Energy Tablets when you right-click specific items in an import/export bus. The rest of that chapter's quests are in the quest book.[6]

Applied Energistics 2 parts

The ME FE Cell Housing is made from Quartz Glass, redstone and insulating resin. The pack changed that recipe, and it also changed every FE storage cell recipe. The Induction Card is a shapeless craft of an Basic Card and a Flux Accessor.[9]

The pack also changed the Flux Accessor recipe, which uses an Energy Acceptor and an Energy Processor. Portable cells use an ME Chest, an Energy Cell for the smaller tiers or a Dense Energy Cell for the M tiers, plus a storage component and the housing.[9]

The storage components lean on AE2 processors too. The 1k component uses a Logic Processor. From the 1M component upwards, the recipes use an Engineering Processor and Vibrant Quartz Glass.[9]

The pack changed the 4M, 16M, 64M and 256M component recipes. The 4M and 16M ones now take Diamond Dust, and the 64M and 256M ones take Emerald Dust.[9]

Three ways to make Energy Processors

The Energy Processor is needed to route energy between devices, and the pack gives you several ways to get it. The first is the AE2 inscriber, which uses Printed Silicon and a Printed Energy Circuit.[9][12]

The second is the ExtendedAE crystal assembler, with a pack-changed recipe that makes 4 processors per craft.[9]

Redstone Crystal and resin

The Redstone Crystal can be made in two places. Advanced AE has a reaction recipe for it, and the pack adds a matching Modern Industrialization recipe, which uses the ftb_constructor machine type. Both take the same inputs: 16 fluix crystals, 16 glowstone dust, 16 redstone blocks and 500 water.[9]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Applied Flux?

3 parts

Applied Flux shows up in one chapter of the quest book: "General Storage", which sits in the "Resources & Logistics" group as chapter 7 of 31. It's a big chapter with 146 quests, and it also covers Sophisticated Backpacks, Functional Storage drawers, Refined Storage 2 and plenty of Applied Energistics. Applied Flux has its own quest there, plus a small mention in another one.[6]

The Applied Flux quest

The quest "Applied Flux" quest asks for three things. The first is any one of the FE storage cells, from 1k ME FE Storage Cell all the way up to 256M ME FE Storage Cell. The second is a Flux Accessor. The third is an Induction Card.[6]

The quest text explains what each piece does. The addon lets your AE network store and automatically move power (FE) to connected machines. The Flux Accessor is the input/output block for managing FE in your system, and the FE is held in the storage cells. For machines fed by a Pattern Provider, you put an Induction Card into that Pattern Provider and it powers them automatically with the FE in your system.[6]

What comes before it

The quest unlocks after "The Reaction Chamber" quest, so you reach it by following this line through the chapter:[6]

  1. "Getting Started With Applied Energistics!" quest asks for an Charger.[6]
  2. "A Certain Quartz" quest covers getting Certus Quartz and the presses.[6]
  3. "Certus Quartz Budding" quest is about growing Certus Quartz crystals.[6]
  4. "Fluix Crystals" quest asks for a Fluix Crystal.[6]
  5. "The Matter Condenser" quest asks for the Matter Condenser and a Singularity.[6]
  6. "The Reaction Chamber" quest asks for the Reaction Chamber.[6]
  7. "Applied Flux" quest is Applied Flux itself.[6]

A second mention

Applied Flux also appears in an untitled checkmark quest, a quest in "General Storage", which comes after "I/O Bus" quest. It lists special right-click interactions for import and export buses, and the Applied Flux line says it exports energy using Energy Tablets.[6]

The quest book doesn't show the text of 13 of the 146 quests in "General Storage" here, so check the chapter in your own quest book for those.[6]

Which Applied Flux config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Applied Flux keeps its settings in a single common config file, and there are only a handful of options. Here is exactly how this pack sets them.[17]

Switches the pack has turned off

  • flux_accessor.enable is set to false. This option controls whether the Flux Accessor is allowed to charge your ME network with stored FE, so in this pack that behavior is switched off.[17]
  • misc.enable is set to false. It controls whether the ME Import Bus can import energy the way it imports items and fluids, so this pack has that switched off too.[17]

Switch that is on

Values that match the mod default

Two numeric options are listed in the pack file along with their mod defaults, and in both cases the pack keeps the default.[17]

  • flux_cell.amount is 1,048,576, the same as the mod default. It sets how much FE is stored per byte in the flux cells.[17]
  • flux_accessor.io_limit is 0, also the mod default. A value of 0 means no limitation on the Flux Accessor's I/O. If you ever change it, the accepted range is 0 to 2,147,483,647.[17]
Tip: Since the flux cell amount is at its default, the capacity numbers you see on the mod's own description apply here unchanged. For example, the project page says the largest cell can store over 200 trillion FE.[1][17]

Unverified The pack file does not show mod defaults for the three on/off options, so I can't tell you whether the pack changed them from the mod's defaults.
